Video: Name That Party in a campaign ad?
posted at 1:36 pm on August 10, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
We gripe when the news media fails to identify the party affiliation of Democratic officeholders when reporting on their peccadilloes, but this is the first time I’ve seen Name That Party apply to a campaign ad. Indiana’s Congressman from the 2nd CD, Joe Donnelly, launches a hard-hitting ad slamming illegal immigration and the unresponsiveness of the Obama administration and the Democratic Congress. It’s an ad we’d typically see from Republicans in this midterm election — but Donnelly isn’t a Republican:
Guess what word never gets uttered in this ad? “Democrat.” Donnelly is the Democratic incumbent in IN-02 who currently holds a 17-point lead over his relatively unknown Republican challenger, Jackie Walorski. Donnelly makes himself the second Hoosier who has created an ad campaign to distance himself from the deeply unpopular Democrats; Brad Ellsworth’s ads never mention that he’s spent the last four years in Washington. Donnelly insists in this ad that “he doesn’t work for them,” meaning … his own party’s leadership, even though Jim Geraghty points out that Donnelly backed their top legislative priority, ObamaCare.,
Maybe if a candidate is too ashamed of his party affiliation, voters in his district should be just as ashamed of voting to have a member of that party in Congress. After all, the surest way to keep their Representative from working for Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama would be to send the Republican to the House instead.

Hmmm – perhaps the Democratic leadership is beginning to reek.

Maybe if someone who will not use their last name, voters should not vote for them either! NV comes to mind.

This is what Democrats ad progressives do so well.
They insincerely ‘adapt’ the opposition policies to appeal to independent/moderate voters during the campaign while keeping their real agendas under wraps.
When elected, they bury their real agendas in complex legislation.
This is the sign of a party that plays political hardball.
The Republican morons and the Tea Party crowd need to play the same game if they ever want to advance their agendas.

The party that shall remain nameless….
A friend of mine describes a soldier that used to work for him that repeatedly, flagrantly and blatantly caused him so many damn problems that, after he finally got rid of the guy, he could no longer pronounce his name. Whenever the memory of the failed soldier came up, my friend referred to him as “The Nameless One” or “He who shall remain Nameless” because the mere utterance of his name was simply too unspeakable in his presence. Appears that the Democrats can’t even utter their own names this year.

JUNIOR
Well he’s the reform candidate, Daddy.
Pappy narrows his eyes at him, wondering what he’s getting at.
PAPPY
…Yeah?
JUNIOR
Well people like that reform. Maybe we should get us some.
Pappy whips off his hat and slaps at Junior with it.
PAPPY
I’ll reform you, you soft-headed sonofab!tch! How we gonna run reform when we’re the damn incumbent!

Why would anyone running for a seat in the US Congress (or Senate) want to ‘distance’ themselves from their party leader?

You should see the adds for Maryland’s Democrat Governor. No mention of party affiliation, and he uses green as his campaign color (apparently, that’s not new, but something he has always done to assert his Irish heritage).

Donnelly is a racist, a nativist rube.
He spits at black Congressmen.

That’s not the ad of someone who is confidently 17 points ahead. Methinks they have some internal polling that makes them very worried.

I’ll see your “Name That Party” and raise you “Name That Bill”. Seriously. Congress is currently trying to vote in a bill which is listed as the “_____ Act of _____” in the Congressional Record because they were in such a rush to push it through.

Nothing wrong with a Democrat bucking the party line, if he’s honestly ashamed of what his party has done. Problem is, Donnelly isn’t being honest — he voted for ObamaCare. I hope he gets voted out of office for it.

And this guy’s ahead??????
C’mon Indiana. You can do better than this. You deserve better than this. If this guy isn’t proud of his party, what message does that send out?
capejasmine on August 10, 2010 at 1:55 PM
Couple this with the fact that the Dem leadership has pretty much forbidden any Dem currently running from mentioning the stuff they have accomplished while in Congress. Mass panic is setting in.
Johnnyreb on August 10, 2010 at 1:55 PM
Anyone foolish enough to believe that any promise made by a Democrat will be kept, is also foolish enough to believe in “independent” Democrats.
Remember Bart Stupek. Perfect example of how a “conservative”, “independent” Democrat votes when the chips are down.
Exactly the way Pelosi are Reid want him to.
NoDonkey on August 10, 2010 at 1:56 PM
That just provides a perfect vacuum for the Republican message to fill nicely. Talk about it all day, every day until election day.

A lot of Republicans had to do this in 1974. It wasn’t pretty. I think this election is going to look a lot like that one. Democrats picked up 52 House seats that year.
rockmom on August 10, 2010 at 2:07 PM
Yeah, Patty Murray here in Washington isn’t putting “democrat” on her ads, either.

It is funny that the Dem are running away from their “accomplishments” and party affiliation. I wonder why that is? Could it be, if they told us who they really were, no one would vote for them?

What sucks is that this turd is in a liberal district. They pulled the “raise taxes or we’ll have to cut fire and police staff” crap that is right out of a typical Dem playbook. The sad thing is that Jackie Walorski is a GREAT conservative candidate. She is feisty and reminds me a little of Palin…ready to take on all comers on issues. Donnelly sent me an email that said that “health care is a right” and voted for it even though he “strongly opposes abortion”. Piece of crap.
search4truth on August 10, 2010 at 2:12 PM
So,don’t discuss what the Liberals have done,
and don’t mention what party you belong to!
canopfor on August 10, 2010 at 2:13 PM
That’s my rep. Democrats have a long history of pretending to be moderate here while not really being so. Tim Roemer used to be our representative (this was the 3rd district before 2000). I think Donnelly can be beat, this district is usually competitive.

Notice that when this point is made in the video, a picture of Obama, Pelosi, and Boehner is shown. So to further confuse the issue, is his party leader Obama/Pelosi, or is it Boehner? Since Boehner is the only one of the three aligned with Donnelly’s views on illegal immigration, could some people think that he is trying to pass himself off as a Republican? Or am I reading too much into this?

Point this out to all you know write editorials in the paper pointing out how they won’t run on their record but try to hide it.
Take two to three converts or former non voters to the polls with you and get absentee ballots for those who can’t or won’t go.

Why can’t the Tea Party start running libertarian candidates in liberal districts who blatantly misrepresent their policy goals?
Simply pander to liberal positions all the while concealing their libertarian views?
When elected cram your agenda in large Congressional bills?
Why is this wrong considering this would be playing by long established progressive rules?
rickyricardo on August 10, 2010 at 2:25 PM
That lousy loose stool sent me a letter touting his record of voting against abortion funding on DOD bases. Of course his vote for Obamacare and it’s ultimate taxpayer funding of abortion wasn’t mentioned. I responded by letter and delivered it to his local office in South Bend. I printed it on the back of his letter because, as I added at the end, he isn’t worth a clean sheet of paper. He is a progressive turd in a blue(dog) shirt.
Extrafishy on August 10, 2010 at 2:25 PM
Do you have to ask?
This called smart campaigning. When times are tough obfuscate and distract the voter to save your arse.
On the other hand, we get idiots like Sharon Angle in Nevada who thinks that being “frank” and “honest” means a damn.
She should be talking in generalities and appealing to moderate and liberal voters to obfuscate her true positions.
However, Republicans and Tea Party types don’t have a clue how to play this game for the long haul.
rickyricardo on August 10, 2010 at 2:30 PM
I’m game! How about…
“F’ing Act of Desperation”
“Embezzlement Act of Liars, Thieves and Miscreants”
“Payoff Protection Act of Democrat-supporting State Unions”
So many more come to mind…

Not really all that surprising. I was at our local town festival this last weekend, and during the parade, there was very little clue about what party the pols belonged to, including those running for state offices.
coyoterex on August 10, 2010 at 2:44 PM
I fully understand your call to play the game by the rules set by the aggressors. My concern is that, when you start lying, it can be difficult to eventually recognize the truth. Corruption is inevitable for all politicians. It is especially dangerous to accelerate the process.
Extrafishy on August 10, 2010 at 2:47 PM
The media won’t let R’s get away with it. And the conservative base wouldn’t stand for it either.
