Open thread: Primary night in CO, CT, MN, and GA; Update: Bennet wins big

posted at 8:27 pm on August 10, 2010 by Allahpundit

Politico is updating with returns from all four states. Two plotlines for you tonight. One: There’s a Gingrich/Huckabee vs. Palin proxy war happening in the GOP gubernatorial primary in Georgia. Newt and Huck backed Nathan Deal, who’s narrowly ahead with 15 percent of the precincts reporting as I write this, and Sarahcuda chose Karen Handel, not only anointing her a “mama grizzly” but turning up in the state to campaign for her. If Deal wins, expect much media navel-gazing tomorrow about What It All Means vis-a-vis Palin’s brand.

The other big one, and even more fun for political junkies, is the Bennet/Romanoff showdown in the Democratic senate primary in Colorado. Remember, Romanoff was the guy whom The One tried to bribe into getting out of the race; as if that’s not sweet enough, Bill Clinton turned around and endorsed him in late June, making this a glorious Obama/Clinton proxy war. Bennet, as the incumbent, is the favorite, but Romanoff’s been creeping up and it’s now too close to call. Another fun fact: Bennet was enough of an ObamaCare shill that he once told CNN he’d happily risk his job in order to pass the bill. Here’s hoping he’s finished off tonight.

Update (Ed): Minnesota only has a couple of interesting races in this primary, one in each party.  The DFL (Minnesota’s Democratic Party) has to nominate a gubernatorial candidate, since as happens almost every time, the major candidates at the convention refused to abide by the state convention’s endorsement.  It looks as though DFL voters will take a pass on endorsed candidate Margaret Anderson Kelliher in favor of the man Time Magazine picked as the worst Senator in 2006, Mark Dayton.  This may be a close race, but as Mitch Berg has covered extensively in the Green Room and at his blog Shot in the Dark, Dayton has poured well over a million dollars of his family money into the primary and will probably spend millions more in the general election if he wins the nomination as expected.

On the Republican side, Tom Emmer will cruise to victory over a handful of fringe leftovers from the convention; Emmer’s major opponents abided by the endorsement and support Emmer now.  But the race for Attorney General is interesting, and potentially worrisome, for Minnesota Republicans.  Chris Barden is a serious candidate and easily won the endorsement, but challenger Sharon Anderson managed to win a statewide primary years ago in similar circumstances despite being totally unqualified for the job.  Barden needs a good turnout from the GOP in order to get the nomination.

Assuming everything plays out as expected tonight, expect big fireworks in the gubernatorial race here.  Word is that Republicans here are very unhappy with the deceptive and nasty personal attacks over Emmer’s two ancient history convictions for careless driving from 20 and 30 years ago, and Dayton makes for a big, big target, especially with his hasty retreat from Washington DC in 2004.

Update: Oof, not even close. With 60 percent reporting and a solid eight-point lead, the race is called for Bennet. A rare win for The One in a tough race. Stand by for Deal/Handel results…

Odd. Deal is a big supporter of the Fair Tax. He wants to copy Arizona’s immigration law in GA. He has opposing ObamaCare as a bolded bullet point on his campaign platform page.

I figured he’d be more popular here. Or is this truly a Huckabee/Palin proxy war?

Techie on August 10, 2010 at 10:51 PM

It’s a stupid proxy war that pits conservatives against conservatives. Either Handel or Deal would be fine with me. And 1000 times better than Roy Barnes, their Dem opponent who has never met a tax or a union he didn’t love.

This is why the GOP manages to screw things up. They can’t see the forest for the trees, ever.

Now instead of rallying behind the winner, they will spend the next few weeks sniping at each other.

From where I sit in Southeastern Connecticut, the only plus I can see about McMahon over Schiff or Simmons is that she’s got personal money, and probably no scruples about fighting dirty against Blumenthal, and let’s be honest, anyone who isn’t a Dem party hack is going to be better than Blumenthal.

The race that has me really pissed off is the 2nd district House race. Peckinpaugh won, and the woman is completely clueless. The only thing she has going for her is her name. She came in a pretty distant third in the state convention. Again, an unhousebroken puppy would be an improvement over Joe “those who rule them in Washington” Courtney, but I was so hoping I’d be casting my votes in November FOR people rather than against the Dems.

At the end of the day, when the November election comes, odds are good that folks with a “R” next to their name will likely do better than their opponents.

He is a very good candidate. Any good conservative candidate must be destroyed by MSM. I suspect Journolist is alive and well.

I’m in the Hartford suburbs, but I still thought Simmons was a better candidate–he got steamrolled by McMahon’s money, and her relentless ad blitz. Still, I’ll go to bat for her from now til November–she does seem to be a good fiscal conservative.

McMahon should also hit Blumenthal on his opposition to the LNG terminal in Long Island Sound–Connecticut needs the gas for both heating and running power plants, as nuclear plants have been shut down here recently. Independent voters, like the rest of us, do pay sky-high electric bills, and just might be sensitive to this issue…

It’s a shame that Fedele, who is Gov. Jodi Rell’s Lieutenant Governor, lost by only a few thousand votes in the primary for Governor. In a state where jobs are extremely hard to find, those ads against Foley’s laying off people at the Bibb Company could turn independent voters away from Foley.

Didn’t Romney support the same candidate Palin did? Why is there concern about Romney’s brand? /

I don’t know if this is out there yet but I have a great rallying cry for all voters tired of politics as usual.

“HEY NANCY, COME NOVEMBER WE WILL SHOW YOU HOW YOU REALLY DRAIN A SWAMP”

I agree that the proxy war is staying stuck on stupid.

I would hope that voters would investigate candidates’ platforms rather than jump blindly on proxy bandwagons.

2010 and 2012 matter. It’s now or never to RESEARCH BEYOND AN ENDORSEMENT.

I wanted to see at least a few ads from Fedele and Foley telling me why I should vote for them, rather then why I shouldn’t vote for the other one. And I didn’t.

I’ve talked to both Foley and Griebel in person (I was apparently a hot commodity at the state convention since I was voting for Griebel and both Fedele’s folks and Foley himself came to try to change my mind) and my impressions of them are:

Fedele: standard issue politician. Not necessarily bad, but still a standard issue politician.

Foley: nice enough, he has a plan, but just something about him I didn’t quite cotton too. He also kept not managing to come to our local RTC to talk to us, reinforcing the impression that most folks in politics at the state level don’t think New London County, especially the southeast portion, matters at all.

Griebel: solid, honest, dependible, intelligent, realistic. The one of the three I’d (metaphorically speaking) let drive my car.

Handel just conceded.

Classy move, IMO. She didn’t have to, could have respectably called for a recount, but apparently is ready to get to work helping Deal beat Barnes.

cs89 on August 11, 2010 at 11:39 AM

I’ll assure you, there is nothing ‘classy’ about Handel…she stooped to all time political lows to bash Deal. I can just see the ads now…All Barnes has to do is ‘remind’ the voters how ‘crooked’ Handel claimed Deal was and her ‘support’ may end up being enough to put that disaster Barnes back in office. Yeah, thanks Ms. Handel!!

itzWicks on August 11, 2010 at 8:23 AM

I pray you are correct, but at the same time, I’m not sure that will do us a whole lot of good. Relatively conservative Tennessee just nominated a GOP candidate who donated to Al Gore’s presidential campaign. That doesn’t inspire my confidence.

If Deal wins, expect much media navel-gazing tomorrow about What It All Means vis-a-vis Palin’s brand.

The narrative is already underway. I’m listening to the ABC news break in between Glenn’s and Rush’s shows and the lede was “The mama grizzly gives up!” followed by 30 seconds of “hand wringing” over the waning influence of Palin. No mention of Romney’s endorsement, of course, or the fact that she may have narrowly lost this one but she’s still racked up many more wins.

NoLeftTurn on August 11, 2010 at 12:04 PM

Yeah, but here’s the problem, Deal had issues that Handel simply did not have. Barnes is going to hammer Deal with that stuff. Deal spent lots of time in Washington, so expect el corrupto, Roy Barnes, to run as an “outsider” against Nathan Deal, Mr. Insider.

The Barnes campaign commercials write themselves. Barnes will beat Deal like a rented mule, I fear, even though Handel will be the good soldier and endorse Deal.

Kudos to Palin for getting Handel as close as she got. It’s not Sarah’s fault that Handel had absolutely no ground game.

Does anyone know if Romanoff lost due to the WH job offer??

Well, as the old saying goes, you can’t win ‘em all.

Although it woulda been sweet.
