Video: First Lady’s trip to Spain “tone deaf”?

posted at 10:12 am on August 9, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Hey, who wouldn’t want a quarter-million-dollar, taxpayer-paid Spanish vacation? Some people just feel compelled to rain on parades, however, and the First Lady’s extravagant Spanish holiday provides a pretty big target. It’s no surprise to see a Republican strategist blast the Obamas for playing Marie Antoinette by spending almost $250,000 on a vacation outside of the US, but it’s not just Republicans scratching their heads at the “tone deaf” nature of such a high-profile outing during economic stagnation. Geraldo Rivera takes a few jabs, and so does Kirsten Powers on Fox, via Mediaite:

“Most Americans are just not going to relate to going to Spain with however many friends she has with her… staying at this exclusive hotel, spending all this money, and it is extremely tone-deaf. Politically, it is absolutely tone-deaf. I can’t even believe that she has done it, frankly. It is not what people do in their first term.”

The best throwaway line comes from Rivera, who responded to Noelle Nikpour’s blast about the First Lady leaving her husband alone on his birthday by soothing her, “Oh, he was playing golf, don’t feel sorry for him.” Nikpour makes a better point about the choice of destinations for the Obamas. Instead of spending all of that money outside of the US, why not spend it here? Mrs. Obama had just publicly urged Americans to spend their vacation money in the Gulf region three weeks before leaving for Spain. That’s the difference between going to Spain and spending time in Crawford — as well as doing the former on the taxpayer dime while the deficit soars over $1.4 trillion and unemployment continues to drag out over 2010.

Powers extended her remarks in a New York Post column this morning:

Some argue that Michelle should be able to travel wherever she wants if she’s paying for it herself. This is naive. She is the first lady at a time when Americans are experiencing great economic pain. There are endless great locations here at home that she could put on the map with a visit — American hotels and restaurants that would be grateful for the business generated by such a high-profile visitor.

If it’s a huge sacrifice for her, so be it. Sacrifice is actually a noble trait, last I checked.

Plus, if she keeps this up, she will be able to vacation anywhere she wants in about two years.

The end of the world? Obviously not. Tone deaf? Absolutely. And it’s telling that this tone-deaf, Marie Antoinette moment comes from the administration that continues to play class warfare to expand government control over the most private aspects of American lives.

Ugh. I see on Drudge that the White House is now pushing the story that Lady Michelle went on the trip to console a “dear friend” whose father had recently died. Have these people no decency? Is there nothing they won’t say, use, manufacture to change “the optics”? What kind of human being would use a man’s death to save herself from some bad media? God, what awful, awful people these Obamas are — and there seems to be no depth to how stupid and gullible they think the American people are.

The economy is going down the toilet and we all have to see the FLOTUS wasting our tax dollars in this way!

Why can’t we listen to this guy? We need people in positions of power that have private sector experience. Wealth can only be created in the private sector. Government jobs only rob us of our wealth and this ridiculous administration has the least amount of people with private sector experience out of any administrations I can think of.

East wing response…..friend’s parent died and MO couldn’t make the funeral, so what do you do?…..take your friend to Spain

cmsinaz on August 9, 2010 at 10:26 AM

That’s right, baby. Michelle’s stay in an exclusive, 5-star Spanish resort was a selfless act of mercy. She was ministering to her dear grieving friend (plus 39 other friends, plus assorted staffers, and a 68-person security detail). We should be thanking her!

To help her recover from her travails, she’s scheduled a 10-day vacation at another posh location on Martha’s Vineyard later this month.

It’s good to be Queen.

AZCoyote on August 9, 2010 at 11:12 AM

Yes, Cokie Roberts actually said that.

Wow, in a whole week?

Doesn’t the State Department spend a lot of money on language classes, right here at home?

Then again, Foggy Bottom was responsible for the “reset” translation.

reaganaut on August 9, 2010 at 11:13 AM

Come on, get serious. The Obama’s are going to pay for the flights, the staff accommodations, the trip to see the King of Spain, all the overtime, and on and on. You don’t think there’ll be per diems doled out?

Dusty on August 9, 2010 at 10:47 AM

The security cost comes with the position of the First Lady. It’s dumb to suggest that MO derives personally benefits from a escort following her around.

compare and contrast for general discussion. Michelle goes on vacation brings 40 guests stays at the most expensive hotels, goes on a massive shopping spree, kicking and closing an entire beach.

Palin goes on vacation stays at a nice hotel with her family, uses a sharpie to recycle an old McCain/Palin visor to try stay out of sight and not cause any problems for guests. when the press outs her vacation Palin and family immediately leave so that the guests vacation are not disrupted and tells the hotel she is sorry for any inconvience to their guests.

hmmm which has the character for the POTUS and the trappings for the office again? Which would use the perks better? Which would you trust at the helm with your money more?

First Spain, Florida this weekend and then off to Martha’s Vineyard with the family before the kids go back to school.

If there were any reporters left in Washington a FOIA request would be going out today to get the budget for the First Lady and compare that budget to the budgets of all previous first ladies.

In fact forget the reporters if the RNC had anyone smart at the whell this would be job one today. Michelle was an asset to the WH before this trip. She had high favorables for whatever reason and the WH was using her to push bills and was planning to use her in the midterms. The RNC could blunt that weapon quickly here.

I think you are right. If the reports about the number of guests and the number of rooms are true, and you add food, room service, ground transportation, the cost of things like carting in palm trees to hide Michelle in her bathing suit, etc., plus the base costs of the security detail and AF2, we are talking $1 million, minimum.

And you will never in a thousand years get me to believe that Michelle Obama is spending that much of her own money just to treat her bereaved friend and her daughter. No way.

People keep throwing around the “… if she’s paying for it herself then who cares” line, but I haven’t seen anything to suggest that the Obamas are paying so much as the tip on room service bills. Is there anything to suggest that a portion of this trip is coming out of pocket? I did not see any in the linked stories.

Having this first couple representing the US is like attending a black tie banquet with your fly down and large snot prominently displayed on the breast of your jacket.

Instead of the hoped for transcendent election of a new type of leader, we have a couple of affirmative action grifters with no clue, and even less self awareness.

Astonishing arrogance.

“Sacrifice is a noble trait, last I checked”

So is humility. But Democrats don’t typically HAVE noble traits, they just expect nobility from others. Whether it’s the rich being asked to pay higher taxes, or inner city students being kept in miserable public schools so teachers unions can thrive, Democrats enjoy creating burdens and giving them to others.

Sorta like concrete shoes, but no Democrat would ever associate with a union boss thug.

Huh? You really believe that the O’s are stingy on themselves? Their free-spending ways were quite well-known, I thought. Private schools for their kids, expensive piano lessons, six-hundred ear-rings, designer clothes, etc, all all these they bought with money they didn’t have. Years later, the mortgage on their condo ended up being bigger than the initial purchasing price. Had it not been BO’s sudden political fortune, they certainly would be in complete financial ruin now.

Interesting – the Sun in the UK (a tabloid) initially reported on July 26 that all the Obamas were going on the trip, and that Barry was going to make official visits to the King and Queen and to Zapatero, the PM.

Obamas off to the Costas

SECTION: NEWS; Pg. 14

LENGTH: 135 words

BARACK Obama will follow the example of hundreds of thousands of British tourists next week – by jetting to Spain for a holiday.

The US president is spending four days in the upmarket Costa del Sol resort of Marbella with his wife Michelle and daughters Malia, 12, and Sasha, nine.

The family arrive on August 4 and are expected to stay in a luxury hotel in the town. He is expected to leave Michelle and his daughters for a morning to make a lightning trip to Majorca, where he will meet Spain’s King Juan Carlos.

A meeting with PM Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is also anticipated. Spanish diplomatic sources have described the visit as “private”.

The Costa del Sol is the number one holiday destination for British tourists.

More than 30 per cent of the 8.5million holidaymakers it receives every year are from the UK.

If true, I wonder what changed? Birthday plans? Unlikely that it was the friend’s father’s death, at any rate, that spurred the trip.

Looks to me like the Mr. and Mrs. may not be getting along so well right now, and the Mr. decided to stay home. Pretty hard to get away from the Mrs. when you are on vacation, especially with a gaggle of reporters following you everywhere. You have to act like you are in love and having a good time. Maybe he’s tired of acting.

Quite a few people in Illinois are interested in how Jesse Jackson Jr avoided getting charged in the Blago corruption trial. That is still going on so if Michelle and Jesse Jr really did meet in Spain (along with the Sheiks) it looks bad, but if Obama was there and met with him it would look really, really bad. That might be the reason he cancelled and only Michelle went.

I am wondering if a certain prosecutor in Illinois is friendly with Spanish authorities? That would be a nice perk out of this trip.

You know when we really need a strong independent media to watch the offices of our government and keep our leaders honest we have nothing.

It’s like it was planned by our enemies to ensure we had no weapons to fight back the complete takeover of our country.

Didn’t he also send his daughter to public school? Carter was a horrible President, but at least dude put his money where his mouth was.

Amy Carter went to public elementary and middle schools, and later went to a Georgia public high school after her Dad was sent packing.

I doubt a trip to Spain to visit the King and Queen was planned and organized in a month since the friend’s dad died in July. Don’t advance teams have to travel to destinations to set up everything well in advance?

Of course you have to plan such visits way ahead of time, and yes, that’s valid for FLOTUS too, especially when she meets with heads of states/royals. She took this whole trip to Spain to comfort a friend who lost her dad, wow, how noble of her…last I checked, people mourn in solitude, and that ‘friend’ for sure didn’t pick the most ‘quiet’ way of mourning her father if she chose to go to Spain with FLOTUS and be in the limelight by association at least. It’s all so pathetically bull…oh, and thanks to the poster who posted the el mundo link! Another thing that was in that article, oh, yeah and yet another ‘coincidence’ I suppose, was that Jessie Jackson Jr was in Marbella too, only in a different villa :-) and is/was expected to meet with Michelle while there…guess Washington does not provide with enough opportunities for them to meet :-) oh, well, ‘great minds’ think alike obviously, or choose similarly, Spanish exclusive resorts for holiday that is :-)…P.S. Her choice kinda surprised me a little though, been to Spain many times as I lived in Europe most of my life, and I visited most of it, including their famed islands, both Ibiza and the Majorcas, and I’d contend that there are far better and more exotic destinations to go to. The Canary islands are way superior, so are most of the Carribean islands, especially Antigua…Italy also is far more interesting than Spain, especially the Amalfi Coast, besides there’s more vegetation there, Spain is all so bare and looks like a big desert, especially in the Sotuh and S-W. Not to mention that there are better beaches in the US than in many of the Spanish resorts…

jimver on August 9, 2010 at 12:30 PM

errata: I meant S-E, not S-W :-)

So what was Mrs Private foookin citizen doing meeting with Arabs Sheiks and officials in Spain?? Hmmmmmmmm

No one will know because apparently no one will ask. Apparently the LSM doesnt read Spanish Papers whilst the First Lady is vacationing in Spain?

iam7545 on August 9, 2010 at 11:37 AM

Translation of last 2 paragraphs of the El Mundo article:

The first lady could also see another American politician, known for Obama, who is staying these days in a private house in Marbella: Jesse Louis Jackson Jr., Democrat member of House of Representatives of the United States, son of activist and former presidential candidate Jesse Jackson and also the national coordinator of the presidential campaign of Barack Obama.

Several Arab royal families also spend their summers in Marbella for many years. Thus, there will be a meeting between Michelle Obama and Prince Salman bin Abdul Aziz, governor of Riyadh and brother of the late King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, while another meeting is shuffled from the first lady with the owner of Málaga CF, billionaire businessman, son of Qatar’s Interior Minister and member of the Qatari royal family, Abdullah Al Thani

Why are we not hearing about this???

I read Kirsten Powers’ column in the New York Post and she is dead on regarding Michelle’s arrogant and elitist attitude by taking this wasteful trip to Spain.

I have seen Dana Perino a few times lately on Fox News and if I see her again, that will be my closing chapter on that increasingly liberal channel. I was sick and tired of seeing Bill O’Reilly constantly defending Obama and his administration of “business as usual” cronies, especially when Obama claimed he would change the way Washington conducts business. I quit watching his follies months ago. Rush Limbaugh was absolutely correct to refer to O’Reilly as “Ted Baxter”. I refuse to watch Rivera. Now, you have a Democratic strategist telling it like it is and you have a RINO like Perino suggesting people to back off on this story about the Spain vacation. Folks, elitists are elitists, regardless of what party they come from.

Kirsten, thank you for your honesty, even though you are a Democrat. Dana Perino…take a hike!

Some of us have no vacation at all. Many are happy to have one week this year.

But the Obama’s obviously do not care about the American people. There is substantial evidence to back that up.

dogsoldier on August 9, 2010 at 12:48 PM

Perhaps people suggesting FLOTUS is tone-deaf probably ought to reconsider their diagnosis. Neither Michelle Obama nor her husband are suffering from any hearing disability. Nor are they blind or dumb.

The First Couple is perfectly cognizant of exactly how arrogantly contemptuous of the her lowly subjects’ sensibilities her wildly lavish jaunt to a 5 star resort for wealthy jet-setters on the taxpayers’ dime would seem to a nation which is suffering the devastating consequences of her husbands disastrous economic policies.

In fact, the blatant display of contempt for the sensibilities of the economically distressed American population was probably the very point of this exorbitantly expensive & flamboyantly pretentious trip.

Provoking resentment & inciting anger – deliberately baiting & beleaguering people in order to gradually overwhelm & ultimately dominate them – is just more (yawn) of the same old same old schtick from the same-old same-old tattered Chi-town ‘community organizer’ playbook David Axelrod & his everpresent sidekick Barack cribbed from Alinsky.

Here’s a list from Lynn Sweet in Chicago. Maybe it’s only been eight this year!

First ladies often go on vacations, with and without the president. An issue for Mrs. Obama may be how many: [1]New York in March;
[2]Chicago, over Memorial Day;
[3]Los Angeles in June;
[4]Camp David — sort of an extension of the White House — in July;
[5]Maine in July, to highlight Acadia National Park, and
[6]now Spain. Mrs. Obama is glamorizing Spain’s coastal resorts before her
[7]Aug. 14 first family weekend visit to
Florida’s Gulf Coast, to encourage tourists scared away by the oil spill.
[8]Starting Aug. 19, the Obamas will spend 10 days in Martha’s Vineyard.

I think she’s missing one or two. Somewhere I read about nine.

And George Snuffaluffagus, in effect, said the story did not have “legs” and that it was time for the country to “move on”.

carbon_footprint on August 9, 2010 at 11:50 AM

George is just hoping the story has no ‘legs,’ because this is the type of story that people don’t forget. This type of story is the reason they hid her for the latter part of the campaign, and reminds everyone why they disliked her to begin with. It also is one of those type of stories that just crystallizes all the problems the American people have had with Obama lately, the feeling that he’s out of touch & just doesn’t get it.

It doesn’t take a long wonky explanation, it’s just obvious. Even us idiot proles get it.

lizzie beth on August 9, 2010 at 1:12 PM

This tells me that Mrs. Obama either
a) isn’t as smart a cookie as she thinks she is and is shocked…shocked that people would criticize her for this,
b) figured her adoring media would give her a pass (which in the States they did for the most part)
or
c) couldn’t give a rats a$$ what people think about her extravagance.

I personally think it’s c…couldn’t care less and is planning her next trip already.
