Too good to check: WV Dem governor aiming to replace Byrd under investigation by feds?
posted at 4:54 pm on August 6, 2010 by Allahpundit
You’ve got to be kidding. In a year where strong Democratic candidates are hard to come by and a red wave is breaking across this country, this guy’s rocking a 71 percent approval rating and leads his Republican opponent by 16 points. And now, suddenly, not only is he going to toss some fuel on the ethics fire that Rangel and Waters started, but he might take enough of a hit to make this otherwise safe seat competitive.
No wonder The One is suddenly making nice with Mitch McConnell.
Gov. Joe Manchin‘s office confirmed today that state government officials have been contacted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office this week regarding an ongoing investigation. The target may be Manchin himself, according to a source who asked to remain anonymous…
According to the government source, Manchin was subpoenaed as part of a federal grand jury investigation. The subpoenas asked for contracts and records for businesses that have done work at the governor’s mansion as well as provided services for parties there. The investigation is into whether Manchin has complied with bidding and state contract requirements.
The Charleston Daily Mail says there’s no evidence yet that Manchin is the focus of the probe, and the details they provide about work being done without competitive bidding — installing drapes, putting up wallpaper, etc — sound penny ante. Read Ed’s post from last month about that 16-point lead of Manchin’s, though. The reason his cushion’s so big is because, at the time, he was pulling 29 percent of Republicans; that’ll change now, and could change dramatically depending upon what happens with the probe. In fact, as popular as he is, Manchin already trails by double digits among indies and is saddled with The One’s dismal 32 percent approval rating. Which is to say, there are probably a lot of persuadables in his column right now. This’ll help do some persuadin’.

Blowback

I am starting to think that Senate will go GOP. And not by a single seat majority either.
Norwegian on August 6, 2010 at 4:56 PM
Trust me, it will not matter. This is the state that re-elected Byrd into perpetuity. If his embalmed corpse were on the ticket this year, it would win in a landslide. Oh God, I hope no one (no Democrat, I mean!!!) from WV reads this post and takes that as a genuine suggestion.

Not too good to check.
Verified.
Did something happen when Hoffa disappeared that caused organized crime and the DNC to trade names or something? Good grief…is there a single Dem who isn’t in the bag?
BobMbx on August 6, 2010 at 4:59 PM
Of course this slimeball is a criminal… he is a Democrat. He just hasn’t been investigated yet.
tetriskid on August 6, 2010 at 5:00 PM
It depends on how a few races break, but it’s doable since Boxer, Murray, Feingold, and so forth are all looking vulnerable right now.
If Republican turnout is very high and Dem turnout is depressed, that makes up for quite a few points between the polls and the actual results. And all the races I’ve listed right now are ones where the Dem is leading by about 5 points or so, just outside the margin of error.
teke184 on August 6, 2010 at 5:00 PM
Give him the Palin treatment.
El_Terrible on August 6, 2010 at 5:01 PM
If Connecticut and West Virginia are in play, then the Dems are in serious trouble. That increases the GOP’s margin for error in races like Washington, Wisconsin, and California.
Doughboy on August 6, 2010 at 5:01 PM
Nope. I am hoping Mark Begich is next. :D

Why would Obama’s DOJ go after a loyal democrat? Has this guy does something Obama doesn’t like? Is he opposing Obama’s war on dirty coal?

West Virginia is a heavily Democratic state. Anything could happen I guess.
therightwinger on August 6, 2010 at 5:06 PM
I’m a little concerned about that, too, since an all-GOP congress makes the case for throwing Obummer out a lot weaker.

If we are going to have crooks in charge why not the Don Corleone family?
sharrukin on August 6, 2010 at 5:09 PM
WV can be in play. The state did go for McCain in 2008. Manchin is very vulnerable on Obamacare. The only one that wants it is Manchin. The rest of the state–not so much. This is doable. Republicans have to work to get it. This won’t be easy, but it is possible.
BetseyRoss on August 6, 2010 at 5:09 PM
Seems like a resume enhancement to me.
At this point the challenge would be to find a Democrat who doesn’t need an investigation.

canopfor on August 6, 2010 at 5:10 PM
Not necessarily. It depends on how Bambi deals with being a President who does not have a friendly Congress working with him.
Bill Clinton was able to triangulate between the Dem minority and the Republican majority to come out with a seemingly moderate position on most things. I don’t think Barry has the patience or humility to do so and, instead, will throw tantrums in which he tries to use executive-level powers to circumvent the actions of Congress.
teke184 on August 6, 2010 at 5:11 PM
Really hard to cozy up to a president that openly hates your number one employer, coal.
Cindy Munford on August 6, 2010 at 5:16 PM
I don’t know about that. A full two years of stories about Obama vetoing everything coming out of congress (which he will almost certainly do since he isn’t exactly the most competent politician to hold the office of President) will just highlight his partisanship and inability to “reach across the aisle”. This President has sunk farther and faster than any president in history. I’d be shocked if the GOP does not retake the house and I am mildly optimistic that we can take the senate or get within a couple of seats.
What would really shock me would be Obama trying to track towards the middle….”I Won” after all. The arrogant b*stard can’t stand to admit he was wrong on anything.

Gotta love it when AP talks hillbilly.
I wonder if everyone is jumping to conclusions, wishful thinking and all. One anonymous source says it may be Manchin…sounds pretty weak, but here’s to hoping!
MississippiMom on August 6, 2010 at 5:21 PM
I wonder, if Obama vetoed everything a republican majority sent him, would the press jump to call him the “President of No”?
MississippiMom on August 6, 2010 at 5:24 PM
I put this in the headline thread, but I’ll repost it here:
If this is true, it could put this seat into play. Which this one & CT, if McMahon gets closer to Blumie, that’s 13 seats that really are in play, and doable, which is insane considering this is a fairly evenly divided class of senators.
I haven’t seen it on HA, but Charlie Cook moved Wisconsin to Tossup on Wednesday. That race has moved from Democrat Hold to Leans Democrat to Tossup in 3 weeks, which is lightening fast. Ron Johnson has a really good shot at this thing, and what I’ve seen of him I really do like him.
lizzie beth on August 6, 2010 at 5:26 PM
wow. the luck that is usually owned solely by the republicans is occurring to all the Democrats. Enjoy it while it lasts fellas, next year, I’m sure this sh!t will be ours.

The problem is, if WVers repeatedly elected a guy like Burd, I don’t see a little corruption as a deal-breaker for them.

I’m pretty sure he did, and Barry got pasted in WV, bitter clingers and all.
lizzie beth on August 6, 2010 at 6:04 PM
Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. But given the idiots of West Virginia, will it really matter.
GarandFan on August 6, 2010 at 6:06 PM
Smart enough to vote against Obama twice.
forest on August 6, 2010 at 6:25 PM
McConnell will probably still be Senate Republican leader after the 2010 elections, and even if it’s still a minority, Obama will need more than the Maine Plain Janes to break filibusters. If the GOP takes the House, McConnell will probably be negotiating with Senate Democrats to get SOMETHING that can pass the Senate, even if it’s a watered-down version of what the House passes. Obama could either just veto everything and be labeled as an obstructionist for 2012, or talk to McConnell about triangulating.
Steve Z on August 6, 2010 at 6:35 PM
Don’t know yet whether CT is in play, although McMahon is closing fast on BlumenArse. There are ads floating around here by Pete Schiff (way behind in the polls) that McMahon gave lots of money to Democrats, but that might not stick.
Rob Simmons would probably be a better candidate (veteran, 3-term Congressman) but McMahon has a ton of money and will probably bury him in the primary.
The 3 GOP candidates have been busy here labeling each other as RINOs, but once the primary is over, can the winner rally enough Indies to win?
Voter registration in 2006 was 33% Democrat, 22% Republican, and 45% Independent. McMahon has been focusing her ads on cutting spending and taxes, and favoring the business environment to “put CT back to work”. Blumenthal, as Attorney General, has been caught in a few lies lately, which might not sit well with those on whom he enforces the law, and his poll numbers, while still around 50%, have been fading.
In a normal year, Blumenthal would be a shoo-in, but with the state bleeding jobs and taxes and deficits through the roof, this is NOT a normal year. Once the primary is over (next Tuesday), Republicans need to unite around the winner, and work at winning over the Indies. If only a third of the voters are registered Democrats, it’s possible.
Steve Z on August 6, 2010 at 6:50 PM
In 2003, after John Rowland had been elected to a third term as Governor of blue-state Connecticut, it was discovered that he had used about $9,000 of state money to upgrade the Governor’s Mansion without authorization from the legislature. This was enough to force his resignation, after which his Lieutenant Governor Jodi Rell took over and won re-election easily in 2006.
Penny-ante? $9K isn’t much compared to a state budget, but corruption is corruption, and it might not be tolerated in WV, as it wasn’t in CT.
Steve Z on August 6, 2010 at 6:57 PM
O/T Obama backed CO Senate candidate in big trouble according to NYT. http://blogs.denverpost.com/thespot/2010/08/06/michael-bennet-denver-public-schools-debt/13028/
Where does this put Colorado in the leaning/tossup category?
Also, there should be 4 Senators who take office in November instead of January due to filling vacancies (Illinois, Delaware, New York and Colorado), correct?
txmomof6 on August 6, 2010 at 7:05 PM
Make that 5 counting WVA. My bad.

29Victor on August 6, 2010 at 7:53 PM
With the election 12 weeks away, anything is possible — but the trend is clear. Absent significant news, Obama’s ratings will continue to slide. Also, the Republicans could have a big turnout advantage in November. If the races in the east go heavily Republican, the news will depress Dem turnout in the west.
The result could be historic.
Pythagoras on August 6, 2010 at 9:36 PM
I think we are looking at 60 House seats flipping and the Senate seriously in play. At this point, the Rs could run the table in the Senate.
