AZ sheriffs to Obama: Plug the damn hole

posted at 11:36 am on August 4, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama saw the need to declare a blanket moratorium on offshore drilling after the Deepwater Horizon blowout, responding with full force — many would argue far too much force — in an obvious emergency.  Why then, wonder two Arizona sheriffs, won’t Obama respond with the same force and alacrity in what is undeniably a federal issue?  Instead of suing Arizona, write Larry Dever and Paul Babeu, Obama should send more resources to stop the flood of illegals across the border:

As the oil gushed out of the broken pipe in the bottom of the gulf, the public was outraged and all hands were on deck to “plug the hole.” Why is it, then, that a similar flood, with national security implications, is met with such inaction by the federal government?

The breached safeguard in this case is the country’s southern border, and law enforcement officers, like the Arizona sheriffs, work tirelessly to secure it from criminal activity, including illegally entering the country.

Half of all illegal immigrants come through our southern international border, and many of those through Arizona. The porous border has drained our resources and harmed our citizens. Every day Arizona sheriffs and deputies fight against the destruction and crime that result from illegal border crossings, but we have received harsh words of criticism and little help from the federal government in response. Instead of supporting our efforts to enforce the laws that they don’t, our own Justice Department sued us.

The White House claims to have gotten tougher than any previous administration on border security, which is something akin to the Washington Generals claiming to field their toughest team in years to play against the Harlem Globetrotters.  The two sheriffs scoff at the notion that the federal government has supplied anything more than lip service and lawyers:

The administration claims to have stepped up efforts to combat illegal immigration, but the problem has grown so immense that it cannot be tackled without the help of state and local law enforcement. And yet, the administration haughtily declines our help, and instead dispatches lawyers from Washington to launch a legal assault. Arizona sheriffs are spending time trying to do the little we can at the border, but now we’re forced into depositions and court hearings to fight our own government.

Congress understood in 1996 that the US needed its local and state law enforcement agencies to take the lead in enforcing immigration law.  They passed a law known as 287g that allows ICE to certify agencies as partners in enforcing federal law.  Instead of broadening this reach, the Obama administration acted to restrict it, especially in Arizona when it decertified Maricopa County in a political spat with Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Now that they have taken Arizona to court to stop immigration enforcement, Dever and Babeu argue that it’s time for the federal government to “put up or shut up.”  Either start sending large amounts of resources to fight the problem, or get the lawyers out of the way so that Arizona can plug the damn hole for them.

The federal government will use force to stop or start something that it wants to either stop or start. It was politically damaging to have oil gushing, so stop the oil. It’s politically beneficial (in their own calculation) to have illegals invade AZ to dilute all those hick conservatives there, so why use force to stop them? I like these AZ sheriffs who are calling out the president to come to the border. I’d like him to trade in his heels and pantyhose from the View for a pair of walkin’ shoes and do a day or two of hiking along the border—see the trash, see the trails, the evidence, take a few sniper rounds around the feet and see what is really going on. Sit outside at 0300 and peer through NVGs and see a squad of armed bendejos with cajones waltzing through an American citizens ranch that you should be protecting.

Obama does not execute the written law, as obliged by the Constitution. Instead, his non-execution has become the unwritten law of the land.

Unwritten laws are one of the reasons this country was founded. We were fairly unique at the time for having a written constitution. By putting it in writing you limit the government. Otherwise the government can do what it says, and if they have all the guns, who is going to argue? A government that acts by arbitrary unwritten laws is a monarchy (good case) or a dictatorship (bad case).

The new law is “Immigrants are U.S. Citizens.” This law is not written anywhere. It was spoken by Obama.

I should have said: Obama thinks he’s finally figured out who’s ass to kick; a girl, Jan Brewer.

I’m gonna P O some folks here, but I’m gonna say it: I think about 70 percent of illegal immigrants can pay for themselves, and I’m not losing sleep about illegal aliens who actually come North to work…

But neither they nor we can pay for the 30 percent who come up with that 70 percent.

We’re not losing money on roofers, gardeners, and busboys. We’re losing it on anchor-baby-mamas and criminals. In fact, we are losing more on them than we gain from the working illegal aliens. The best way to stop the bleeding is to target policies at discouraging the criminals and mooches.

SB 1070 and laws like it target the criminals. In fact, mandatory deportation for criminal aliens should be the policy in all 50 states. How many criminals (especially petty criminals) end up with bus tickets to the border when the Mexican police are sick of dealing with them? If the Mexicans know they will get Jose the Cat Burglar right back if they send him North, they will stop sending him North.

I think laws aimed at ending birthright citizenship can be done without changing the 14th Amendment: Slaves by the estate of slavery are not citizens of any nation, and needed to be made citizens by the 14th Amendment of the nation in which they have resided for generations. Illegal aliens are citizens of another nation, who may be in the maternity ward in Brownsville hours after their arrival in the USA. An alien has citizenship, but has it somewhere else. If language like this is included in a law stopping birthright citizenship, I think it can pass legal muster. No anchor baby, no key to unlock the door of the American welfare system. Say goodbye to the mooches.

The One’s leaky boat

This immigration mess is even an issue to people in the Gulf! The One better check the poll numbers on His position.
If you drive up LA 1 around 134th Street in Lafourche Parish near the port, there is a sign in a front yard about some poor worker named Nicholas who was killed by an illegal.
Now there are lots of spill signs and you can underastand that, but immigration…then we have the leaking secrets…who is running this government, anyway?

Don’t think for a minute that his pathological hatred of women has not played into this.

But I think Dick Morris really nailed Obama several weeks ago when he said this about the BP spill: Obama is an agitator, a legislator and a litigator. That’s his go-to answer for everything – agitiate the public against a target (usually a strawman), legislate to bust it or sue to stop it. Actual leadership and proper executive management of the federal government’s responsibilities — not so much. That’s not his thing. Same deal with border enforcement; it would require actual leadership and management to enforce the border. So instead, Obama agitates Mexican-Americans and sues Arizona.

You are right up to a point, but the vast majpority of people who have illegally crossed the border in the last 10 years are not working as maids and gardeners, they are working in U.S. factories and construction, and have massively depressed wages in those industries. In addition, they all DO cost us money because they tend to live extremely frugally and do not spend their money in the U.S., they send it all back home. So employing them does not provide the multiplier through the economy that hiring a citizen would.

When Texas was a part of Mexico the Mexican Government had a problem with illegal aliens (North Americanos) flooding into the open and available lands. Rather than trying to defend their borders they gave amnesty to these interlopers and let them come on in if they would just agree to become Mexican citizens and obey Mexican Laws.
This lasted until the ‘tipping point’ whereby there were more there who considered themselves to be a part of the United States…Texans rather than Mexicans.
Now it looks like things are reversed with the flow coming in the other direction.

Uniblogger on August 4, 2010 at 12:19 PM

U.S. Constitution – Article 1 Section 10, Para 3:
No State shall, without the Consent of Congress, lay any duty of Tonnage, keep Troops, or Ships of War in time of Peace, enter into any Agreement or Compact with another State, or with a foreign Power, or engage in War, unless actually invaded, or in such imminent Danger as will not admit of delay.

Isn’t this an invasion of AZ by Mexico? If not by the Mexican government, then certainly by the people of Mexico?

Has the federal government not delayed it’s correct response to this action?

I don’t dispute that, but it also goes to my point about the 70 percent of working illegals not being able to pay enough taxes to cover the thirty percent of criminals and welfare mooches.

Their effect on tax receipts is like that of a burger-flipper, even if they are somehow paying taxes with a fake SSN. There aren’t enough burgers to flip for seven people to cover the tax monies paid out for one criminal and two welfare families. Especially if the bureaucracies that handle them add personnel in order to be able to conduct business in another language.

I truly don’t know how you can solve the immigration problem once and for all, but putting more troops on the border for states that are asking for them certainly doesn’t hurt, instead of suing them over their attempts to control a situation that Washington probably doesn’t even comprehend.

Mexico in general is on its way to becoming a failed state. 26,000 killed since 2006 is out of control, I’d say.

You’re obviously a product of the public school system, time for a history lesson. Mexico never owned Texas, the Comanche did. Mexico just wanted to own Texas. After Mexico lost a 20,000 man force trying to take TX from the Comanche, they INVITED Anglos in as a buffer against the Comanche (you never learned about Stephen F. Austin in public school, either, I guess). Anglos were able to take Texas, as Mexico couldn’t. And in those days, if you could take territory and hold it, you owned it. Actually, that’s still true now…

Re what they cost us, I’ve never seen decent data on what portion of the subprime mortgages that brought down the financial system were held by illegal aliens. With no-doc mortgages being given out left and right, I suspect many of them were illegal, and no one can default and disappear as effortlessly as an illegal. Many of the illegal alien mortgages may still be rotting in the basement of Fannie and Freddie.

Anyone know?

Every Republican running for office, should point to this and say “This is what my opponent supports, open borders, allowing illegals to overrun our country, allow illegals to commit crimes without punishment, allow our people to be attacked, intimidated, beaten, shot at, and killed”
