Results coming in: Missouri voters tackle ObamaCare mandate in referendum; Update: 76% voting yes early

posted at 9:24 pm on August 3, 2010 by Allahpundit

If you want to know which news item will be making Gibbs look constipated at tomorrow’s briefing, look no further. It’s the first time voters from any state have addressed the mandate at the polls.

And things are looking good.

Opponents of Prop C — those who support the insurance mandate — have been frustrated by the lack of a vigorous campaign to defeat it. Apart from a mass mailing by the Missouri Hospital Association, no organized effort existed until a few weeks ago when three 19-year-olds started a Facebook campaign. “I’ve had to spend about $500 out of my own pocket making signs,” lamented Caleb-Michael Files, the Subway sandwich-shop manager and full-time college student who launched the Facebook effort. He wonders why Missouri is spending money on a referendum likely to stir up an expensive court case. “The law is the law,” he says. Missouri lieutenant governor Peter Kinder is one of several state officials across the country who have already filed suit challenging the federal law. (Another of those, Virginia attorney general Ken Cuccinelli, gained a small victory in his fight against the law on Monday, when a federal judge ruled that the state does indeed have standing to bring the suit.)

Prop C is a gimme for the GOP base. In polls, Republicans strongly oppose Obamacare — and Tuesday’s primaries are far more interesting on the GOP side, practically guaranteeing a turnout heavily skewed against health care reform. Republicans barely need to raise more money to get out the vote.

Democrats in the state legislature actually colluded to make sure it was on the ballot today so that they wouldn’t have to risk an even more embarrassing result in November. Here’s the actual text of the proposition together with real-time polling results. It’s symbolic, of course: Strictly speaking, it would deny the government of Missouri the power to penalize citizens for failing to buy health insurance, but that’ll be irrelevant if/when a federal court decides that the mandate in ObamaCare is constitutional. This is pure politics, aimed at reminding Democrats that even in a perennial swing state, opposition to compulsory insurance isn’t a close call. Too bad the vote didn’t happen a few weeks earlier, as a lopsided win might have scared a few centrist Dems away from other hot-button legislation like financial reform.

As I write this, with 282 precincts reporting, the anti-mandate vote leads … by 47 points. Scroll all the way down to the bottom here and follow along.

Update: With roughly a third of all precincts reporting, the anti-mandate vote is at … 75.8 percent. Good lord.

Badly outspent by both rivals, the guy from Gateway computer won as an outsider, according to The Hill. Put almost $6 million of his own money in.

OK! My night has been made. With 100 % in prop c is 72.3% yes and 27.3% no in My county of Jefferson! In the vote for the Senate with Carnahan and Blunt the voters were 13,800 dems and 13,900 repub. In the vote for rep in my district, 13, 700 voted in the dem primary and 13,500 in the repub.

It looks like the dems voted yes on Prop C! It also looks like the dems had a weaker turnout. At least where I live.

OOOPs, I spoke too soon. KC is in and they did as expected 43.5% yes on prop c and 56.5% no. Actually with St Louis at 42% yes and 58% no. Obamacare even lost some core Obama voters.

Regarding the Michigan Governor race:

The Lansing Mayor won the 2 person Democrat primary. According to a talking head, the last time a mayor ran for governor was in 1898, so this guy is not expected to win. If he wins in the fall, it will be from a get out the vote effort from the SEIU, acorn, the unions, and the dems. But according to the talking head, the voters were especially harshly anti incumbant this primary.

The republican primary was polling pretty much even between the current AG, Cox, the former gateway CEO, Rick Snyder who ran a “nerd for jobs in MI” during the superbowl to launch his campaign, and Hoekstra. Traditionally, it is very hard to get western michigan candidates elected in statewide races. Snyder’s website had a 10 point plan to bring MI back from financial disaster and to bring jobs back. His campaign was laser focused. However, he waffled on the illegal immigration issue, it is not part of his 10 points and the person who answered my email question about the campaign punted on the issue, therefore, I did not vote for him. If he had the “cajones” to be tough on illegal immigration, I would be in favor of his candidacy. The Cox guy seemed just like another politician, so I defaulted my vote to Hoekstra because he was a Western michigan resident and we already have been ruined by too many people from the detroit area running this state.

I expect the nerd will win this fall. His margin of victory tonite was higher than any polls I have sesen, so I think the pollsters are not finding the voter base that will show up this fall.

Just my 2 cents on the Michigan governor race.

Since ALL of the leftist pundits are likely to try to miss the OBVIOUS point of this I will start the ball rolling NOW!

Republican message #1 for this election is REPEAL OBAMACARE!

How silly would they need to be to NOT go with 70%+ of the VOTERS?

If the Republicans follow my simple advice, this next election is all but over!

Freddy on August 4, 2010 at 1:24 AM

Also to answer questions about the MI race:

Hoekstra decided not to run for the House seat he has been in for 18 years, 5 people ran in the R primary.

The adjacent district, Gerald Ford’s old district, Ehlers, a 17 year R incumbent also is retiring, his seat had 5 in the R primary. The person I voted for only got 5% of the vote, but she was the only NO AMNESTY platform person in the race. There were other andidates, but they waffled on the amnesty part. Illegal immigration is not a hot button issue up here yet, not enough of them here to mess up the local economy yet.

Way to go Missouri.

God bless my home state. We may be a swing state, but we also have common sense, most of the time.

Now if we can get rid of Carnahan and McCaskill I will be even more happy.

Mr. Obama,

Tear DOWN this ObamaCare!

Sincerely,

Missouri

Lol!

I think the Conservative slogan should by: “TEAR DOWN THIS MANDATE”. People will get that. It has a better ring than tear down Obamacare. Plus, people it will make people think because they may not understand what the mandate does.

What is the MSM narrative tomorrow morning?

This should be fun.

Inanemergencydial on August 3, 2010 at 11:51 PM

The MSM will probably just ignore it, since it doesn’t fit their template.

… he seemed to be a very serious sentator – especially on national security. Why do you think he was voted out?

Perhaps because he was a very serious senator on security – isn’t MI the home of GM unions and …Dearborn.

(1) Those stupid bitter clingers in Missouri just don’t understand how great Obamacare will be for them (because they’ve been duped by those evil right-wingers who run the media and control the narrative); and (2) Barry’s team has to start doing a better job of explaining to the rubes the many benefits of having federal government bureaucrats making all of their health care decisions for them. Once Barry and co. start explaining it better, everyone will love Obamacare!

Check out the Senate Primaries…

Almost twice as many people voted Republican as Democrat.

I can see November from my house!
