Rasmussen: Days of blaming Bush are over
posted at 10:12 am on August 2, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
For the last two years, Democrats have blamed George W. Bush for all of the nation’s woes — and that meme has had a surprisingly long shelf life. Even a year after Barack Obama passed his Porkulus plan that supposedly would keep unemployment below 8% and instead lead to a generational nadir in employment, voters still bought the idea that Bush was more to blame for the current economy than the people in charge of Congress for the past four years and the man in the White House for the last eighteen months. Rasmussen says the days of Obama’s whine and moroses have come to an end:
For the first since President Obama took office, voters see his policies as equally to blame with those of President George W. Bush for the country’s current economic problems.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 48% of Likely U.S. Voters now think Obama’s policies are to blame for the continuing bad economy, up three points from last month. Forty-seven percent (47%) say the recession that began under Bush is at fault.
With voters across the country expressing stronger belief that the economy is getting worse rather than better, these new findings spell potential bad news for Democratic candidates this fall. The president is already planning to limit his campaign appearances with candidates because of potential voter backlash.
The problem for Obama and the Democrats is that the even split doesn’t occur through the demographics. Men blame Obama by 13, 55/42, while women blame Bush 52/42. The biggest problem for Democrats will be independents, where a majority blame Obama, 52/44. Seniors blame Obama by the widest margin, 58/39, and they’re likely to turn out this year.
After eighteen months and a trillion dollars in spending have left us with lower employment levels than at any time in the past generation, Obama finally owns the economy. He bought it with our grandchildren’s money.
John Kerry, meanwhile, says that the furshlugginger press just hasn’t been nice enough to Democrats. Instead of covering the greatness of financial-regulation reform, the media chased Shirley Sherrod and missed Obama’s brilliance. Of course, Obama helped that along by hysterically cutting Sherrod loose and then having to backtrack to offer her job back, but Kerry seems to forget that part of the story. My understanding is that the millions of job losses under Obama have hit men much worse than women. That would likely explain a lot of this discrepancy. Women are still living in a 2006 economy, but men don’t have that luxury anymore. (Please don’t take offense, ladies, I’m talking about broad trends here, not individuals.)

“I think what’s happened is Fareed, in the last six months I think there was an article even in the paper this week about people no longer blaming Bush. They’re beginning to target this White House. That’s a natural course of events as you go through any administration, but I don’t think it is fair to the President,” Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) said on CNN.
“The story hasn’t been sufficiently told,” Kerry added.

did he pass through his reptilian era somewhere? When did the reptilian brain come around? Is leperism a favorable quality that he would pass off to his spawn to help them survive the climb from the primordial soup while they await the expected development of their thinking and reasoning skills, hopefully before someone denotes that they are different and “naturally selects” them for extinction via the darwinian death panel?
these are things that reptilian thinkers need to know….

Interesting poll.
My interpretation is that Dem policies have failed to work miracles. It was, in fact, a global economic collapse.
It was as bad as we all feared. And we’ve obviously just staved off the worst. That’s why there’s no real recovery, and there won’t be.
The part that is politically interesting is that Obama so overpromised that his stimulus bill would be the solution. And he just can’t deny that now.
They are trying to call this the Bush recession. First of all, that’s silly. No president can control the economy to that degree. Second, it’s really silly to call it a recession.
This is a depression.
AnninCA on August 2, 2010 at 10:33 AM
I’m sorry were you talking about the economy being Kerry’s fault? You lost me when you said “Kerry”. My issues with him go way beyond this. I’m haven’t forgotten his traitorus activity in Vietnam. I’m also upset with those who keep electing this traitor every election.
(breathing slowly as to not hyperventilate)
shick on August 2, 2010 at 10:34 AM
The interesting part to me is that people are fairly irked at Obama for not performing miracles.
I guess I’d call this the natural push-back for his campaign. “We are the ones you’ve been waiting for.”
Greek columns, big vague speeches, etc.
People who actually voted probably on race lines, just out of a desire to right a wrong, now don’t feel too loyal to the message.
Makes sense to me, anyway.
AnninCA on August 2, 2010 at 10:36 AM
It’s more likely due to the fact 41% of women self identify as Democrats and only 25% as Republicans. I’m thinking that 16 point gap explains the majority of that 10 point gap on blaming Bush. It’s more political than gender.
ButterflyDragon on August 2, 2010 at 10:37 AM

Ok, I’m in an evolutionary quandary here….If he’s still a snake ( a reptile) yet he’s simultaneously a leper and considering the following…
Since, leprosy is a contagious “skin” disease, and reptiles do not have “skin” per se, they have scales…..how can he be in this state of being both a reptile and a leper? Does he demonstrate leperous thinking as well? This is a quandary which we must engage a different part of our brain to help discern the differences….I am not sure, maybe another brain can assist…./
ted c on August 2, 2010 at 10:39 AM
Bush is just a convenient proxy.
When there is a Republican in the White House it’s the Republicans fault.
When there is a Democrat in the White House Congress is to blame.
If Congress is controlled by Democrats, Republican obstructionism is the problem.
Republicans will always be the bad guys.

yoda on August 2, 2010 at 10:39 AM
All good things must come to an end, even for the Dems in using Bush as a scapegoat.
Or to put it another way if you have a son that does drugs, a parent usually blames the drug dealer for supplying him the drugs. Then when relapses he blames peer pressure; the when he lapses again he blames his son’s love life. But after more than 4 tries to kick the habit, the parent finally figures it out that it is the son’s fault he is a drug addict and that he has to want to help himself.
Most indies and moderates have given Obama enough slack by blaming Bush but it comes a point where you cannot blame Bush any longer, that you have to admit that Obama simply has not done his job, and that he is to blame for the state of the economy now.
technopeasant on August 2, 2010 at 10:40 AM

No stimulus program would have worked. Neither would have doing nothing.
The “stimulus” merely gave states time to regroup. You simply can’t have tax revenues fall off the cliff and still support state institutions. It’s not possible.

Kerry is nothing but lying scum, period. He is responsible for more American soldiers’ lives than the Iraq war. The North Vietnamese generals have said they would have surrenderd in ’68 if not for the support of the American left. His meetings with the North Vietnamese leaders in Paris was nothing short of treason.
volsense on August 2, 2010 at 11:04 AM
Kerry’s just bitter.
I don’t think there was ever a worse presidential candidate than him, including the present pResident.
On absolutely every issue, Kerry kept switching; you never knew for certain what he believed! How anyone could vote for him — as opposed to what people did: vote against Bush — is beyond me!
Get your taxes situation straightened out, John….and maybe we’ll listen to you
ToddonCapeCod on August 2, 2010 at 11:07 AM
Kerry’s campaign was still trying to tie George W. Bush to Herbert Hoover in the 2004 election, because the Democrats were still wistfully looking back to their all-time dream election of 1932, which began 20 straight years of Democrats occupying the White House.
Odds are that’s not going to happen again — FDR needed Hitler, General Tojo and Mussolini to pull the last one off — but until the Democrats lose a presidential election, they’re still going to be trying to pin all their problems on Bush, no matter how ineffective the polls may show that tactic is becoming for the party.

No he didn’t. he took the intelligence that your hero Bill Clinton had generated, and convinced Congress-including many Democrats-that it was the right thing to do.
Your heroine Hillary Clinton, then a Senator, said at the time she based her “Yes” vote not on what Bush told her, but what her husband’s intel people told her.
Your problem is selective memory. In 1998, all of the major Democrat players said Iraq and Saddam were dangerous and had WMDs and had to be taken out. The very same year, Clinton’s Justice Department directly linked al Qaeda to Iraq as well.

Folks what other alternative do they have to blaming Bush?
We suck?
We don’t know how to fix things?
Put this in the category of the race card as what happens when democrats fail. I am not saying don’t call them on it but don’t waste your time reasoning out why they are using excuses. It is because they need excuses.
The thing that troubles me is how suckered in women are by what the democrat party line is. 52/42 Bush for women versus 52/44 blame Obama? Who is President again with unmatched congressional power? The power of the One’s smile and Teleprompter rears its ugly head.
ALso I believe when a man comes along, in business, politics or otherwise and says he can fix things better than ever and makes them worse than in a long time men judge that man accordingly. Doesn’t fly in the man club. Maybe that was the “cojones” Palin said Brewer had that Obama didn’t. She views the world similiarly as non-liberal men and that is why those men like her in polls. It isn’t about her looks. Its how she acts.

It’s no wonder that women like the bumbler in chief because most of the stimulus money went to states so that they could keep teachers working. Guess what gender most teachers are? So we have lots of families with the wife teaching and all of the benifits that go with the job and her unemployed husband earning $300-$500 per week unemployment compensation. I could live on that. One last thing, do any of the blame Bush crowd remember who controlled Congress his last two years in office? Do any of those people know who makes the budget and then allocates the money for that budget? How on earth could GWB be responsible for this mess? Look at a chart of job creation under Bush. It starts slow and then builds quickly until 2007 and rapidly declines in 2008. Guess what happened in ’07 and ’08? hat’s right Congress was taken over by the Demorats!
