Arianna Huffington: It’s time to start taking Palin seriously

posted at 10:38 pm on August 2, 2010 by Allahpundit

Two possibilities. One: She’s trying to puff Palin up because, like the rest of the left, she’s eager to face her in 2012. Two: She’s nervous. Hmmmmm.

We are awash in crises right now — crises that require smart and creative policy fixes. So why is somebody who so rarely deals in policy fixes so popular? It’s because Palin’s message operates on a level deeper than policy statements about the economy or financial reform or health care or the war in Afghanistan…

It’s not Palin’s positions people respond to — it’s her use of symbols. Mama grizzlies rearing up to protect their young? That’s straight out of Jung’s “collective unconscious” — the term Jung used to describe the part of the unconscious mind that, unlike the personal unconscious, is shared by all human beings, made up of archetypes, or, in Jung’s words, “universal images that have existed since the remotest times.” Unlike personal experiences, these archetypes are inherited, not acquired. They are “inborn forms… of perception and apprehension,” the “deposits of the constantly repeated experiences of humanity.”

This is the realm Palin is working in — I’m sure unintentionally — and it’s why she has connected so deeply with a large segment of the public. In fact, her evocation of mama grizzlies has a particularly resonant history in the collective unconscious. According to the Jungian Archive for Research in Archetypal Symbolism, “The bear has long fascinated mankind, partly because of its habit of hibernation, which may have served as a model of death and rebirth in human societies.”

Read her post for the rest. Translation: Sure, Palin’s a doofus, but her ads are smart (which is true) and our media’s pretty doofus-y too, and with an electorate that’s too terrified to do the obviously right thing by voting liberal, anything’s possible. This is standard argumentation among hyperpartisans of all stripes — remember George Lakoff reassuring liberals that they lost elections because crafty conservatives were better at branding? — but you’ll see it in spades if/when Palin gains traction. The point, as always, is to reassure fellow hyperpartisans that it’s not the opposition’s policies that voters find appealing but something (anything!) else, and since their contempt for Palin runs deeper than it does for the rest of the GOP field, the explanations for her success will have to be that much more creative. Hence the hyperventilating over Jungian magic or whatever that’s supposedly being practiced via what’s actually a painfully simple, even heavy-handed animal metaphor. You’re going to see a lot of this if she’s the nominee, and it’ll all run along the same lines: Palin’s practicing some sort of witchcraft or hypnosis or unleashing America’s “id,” etc etc, all geared towards insisting that her appeal is, and can only be, operating on a sub-cerebral level. That’s the goal here — to suggest that, because no thinking person could vote for her, this is all playing out somehow in America’s subconscious. Credit to Arianna for framing it in terms of Jung, at least. Most of the lazier pieces you’ll see in this vein, and there’ll be many more, will stick with Freud.

I’ve been thinking about this paradox: the most important political ad of 2010 so far did not play on television, and came from someone not currently running for any office. It was Sarah Palin’s latest web video, “Mama Grizzlies.”

Leftoids are so funny!
Sarah, to them, is like the Tea Party Movement: they know they ought to “get it,” they can see that Americans are being attracted to it by the thousands, if not millions, but they will never “get it” because they’re in their ruling class bubble of Liberalism über Alles, so they make things up.

The momentum behind Sarah Palin is per that wonderful article by Codevilla that everyone’s talking about;
AH and the Huff Po are the ruling class, while Sarah Palin and her followers are the country class.

davo on August 2, 2010 at 11:03 PM

How is Arianna sure it’s unintentional? After all, if Arainna can look up bear in the index of Jung’s collected works, why couldn’t Palin.

And what makes anyone think that only Jung and all those others, i.e, every college freshman, who’ve read him, can come to that conclusion? Wow, Arianna, collective unconscious, please tell me more?

Besides, does it really matter whether it’s intentional? When writers, poets, filmakers, entertainers, etc. connect with people, is it because they looked through Jung’s categories of archetypes and intentionally chose the one that corresponds to the emotion they wish to evoke?

There is one archetype on which Arianna is modeled; it is the bragging soldiers — a know-nothing blowhard, a fraud.

The thing is, the election in 2012 will be decided by economic issues.

There is no George Bush left to save Obama’s butt.

If the economy is on the mend, Obama will win reelection. It doesn’t matter who we nominate. It just so happens we’ll get more of our base to the polls if Palin is the nominee; but we’ll still lose. If we’re just muddling through or we’re still in hard times, Palin will win. Bank on that. I don’t care what Proud Rino thinks. People vote on what’s happening in the economy, not what the libtards on TV scream at them about Palin.

Mittens will get crushed in a good environment, and could only do barely well in a bad economic environment. He is more likely to win in hard times, like Palin, but by a smaller margin, because the Base Republicans know he is a cheap phony and too many of them will stay home. You don’t have that problem with Palin, who reeks authenticity to conservatives.

This bitter phony is the antithesis of Palin in every respect; the embodiment of un-American elitist progressivism in all its splendid vanity, fatuity and viciousness.

It’s amazing how the Left is falling into the same pattern with Palin they did with Reagan.

rrpjr on August 2, 2010 at 11:28 PM

Whether Sarah is using Jungian archetypes or not, A-Huff is an arrogant elitist sitting atop her very own ivory tower. This argument serves only one purpose: to make A-Huff feel better about the fact that she and her ilk are losing the battle for the hearts and minds of REAL Americans.

The reality here is that Sarah Palin understands what is meaningful to people. And she frames the truth in a language that resonates with them.

To give Huffington credit for intellectual prowess brings your smarts into question. Or you have been drinking. Whatever.

Aryana is mad that the sales price has been set for washed up liberal rags – $1.

Hot Air knew this,a looooooooooooooog time ago!!

Some of us did.

Allah and the rest of the RINO Mittenbots have been a little slow to learn this.

Mr Purple on August 2, 2010 at 11:34 PM

Carl Jung? Is this who

… let me get my accent on: “Ahririiannah Ahuhuffinguht” is referring to? Carl Jung? LMFAO.

/Oh, sorry I just hahahahaa-d on my monitor. For real?

Key West Reader on August 2, 2010 at 11:36 PM

This was truly a funny column today. I’m amazed at how manhy goofy Palin threads she runs daily. She’ll post anything by any malcontent from Alaska, regardless of the absurdity.

Seems to be working so far. Also note her pastor is a black man. Quite a difference from O’s bitter marxist moron.

AnninCA on August 2, 2010 at 11:36 PM

So, in comparison…. where do you stand as an pathetic, malcontent lesbian who is deprived of life and lonely for affection yet cannot find it at a women’s softball field somewhere in utter devastation that is the State of California? Do tell, Ann. We .. nah, nevermind.

Neh, Don’t answer. We really don’t want to know.

Key West Reader on August 2, 2010 at 11:43 PM

Jung was a weird kid with multiple personalities.

faraway on August 2, 2010 at 11:44 PM

Jungian? Nah. American. That’s what Ariana will never get.

Tennman on August 2, 2010 at 11:45 PM

These silly marxists, they’ll try to make a collective out of anything. Even the unconscious. Which is pretty much what they are most of the time.

shmendrick on August 2, 2010 at 11:47 PM

I used to be a hard core, New Agey, social democrat, psychobabble-literate liberal and the Jungian references are supposed to make you think these are deep, deep people and that Sarah Palin just accidentally slipped into the profound insight of Carl f’n Jung! These are people who are over-involved in their own dream world and cannot understand that grounded, normal people actually have common sense. You don’t need Jung to understand the protective nature of mama grizzlies. You don’t need Jung to understand the vacuity and self absorption of the do-gooding Liberal saints and their evangelical desire to save us all from ourselves. They think by referencing Jung they are just so cool, so Oprah, so Joseph Campbell, so Deepak Chopra. They are so yesterday’s narcissism gone wild. They are probably journaling as I write.

mbabbitt on August 2, 2010 at 11:49 PM

Wait a minute!
AH & her pack of flying monkeys think Sarah Palin’s an idiot, but applaud her for being brilliant enough to use Jungian archetypes to hook people into her movement?
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?! LOL

BTW, check out the comments at HuffPo–virtually everything they say about Sarah has been proven to be true about Oilbama!
Love it x 3!

Jenfidel on August 2, 2010 at 11:55 PM

This is the ad. She’s running! You betcha!

Right on! I’m a retired PhD licensed shrink and I can tell you that Jung has become the cool guy to spout if you want to sound intellectually superior at cocktail parties, etc. Most don’t have a clue what he or they are talking about.

shmendrick on August 2, 2010 at 11:56 PM

I’m not so sure this is really from Ariana since I can find no accusation of racism.

snaggletoothie on August 3, 2010 at 12:01 AM

During the 08 campaign there were some on the right side of the message boards who swore that the haloed one was practicing neuro linguistic programming with his speeches. No one as high up the idealogical food chain as Ariana is on the Left, though.

xkaydet65 on August 3, 2010 at 12:14 AM

ROFLMAO!

Arianna…sweetheart…

…you’re dumber than a box of rocks.

That ain’t gonna cut it, toots.

Saltysam on August 3, 2010 at 12:17 AM
