Third House Dem calls for Rangel to resign

posted at 10:12 am on July 30, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

It’s not quite a chorus, but it’s become at least a three-part harmony.  Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA) joined Betty Sutton (D-OH) and Walt Minnick (D-ID) in demanding that Charlie Rangel resign from office in disgrace.  Murphy’s statement came after the House Ethics Committee produced 13 charges of unethical behavior by the New York Democrat and former Ways and Means chair:

Congressman Patrick Murphy called on Charles Rangel to resign this morning as the former Ways and Means chairman was set to face the airing of ethical charges by a House jury.

Murphy, the 8th District Democrat, said “as the facts came out, it was pretty clear what his conduct was. I believe that it’s a discredit for the institution.”

So who does Murphy represent?  PA-08 is a northern Pennsylvania district that borders New Jersey and contains plenty of rural voters — the kind of voters probably disinclined to view Rangel’s corruption lightly.  The Cook report puts this district at a D+2, meaning that Murphy is almost certainly going to face a tough challenge from Mike Fitzpatrick, who won in PA-08 in 2004 but lost in the 2006 Democratic sweep.

That’s not terribly different from staunch Blue Dog Minnick, whose district is the most Republican in the US being represented by a Democrat, at R+18.  He will face off against Raul Labrador in a year when the (D) label is already a millstone around the necks of incumbents in stronger districts.  Betty Sutton comes from one of those stronger districts, OH-13, which is a D+5.  Tom Ganley, a man who faced down the Mob in Cleveland and helped the FBI destroy them, will challenge Sutton for her seat in a state that Democrats see slipping away.  Sutton wants to be seen as an anti-corruption crusader with her demand for Rangel’s resignation, but Ganley literally put his life on the line to fight corruption and crime.

It’s good to see some Democrats stick to their principles, even if they are primarily motivated by the footsteps of Republicans gaining on them.  So far, though, it’s a pretty thin chorus singing a desperate tune.

They don’t want Rangel under oath… Once again, the Democrat Party is the largest and most powerful organized crime ring ever to have been established in the history of the world.

I think PA-8 is in Southeastern PA (not northern PA), mostly Bucks County between Bethlehem and Philly. It’s a pretty wealthy area that used to be strongly Republican, but the limo-libs are ruining it.

I heard a democrat ad on KMOX (St Louis) on Wednesday and the Democrat was running against this congress and it’s refusal to listen to the people. First time I ever heard a politician run against their own party. End of world coming??

I hope Rangel holds on and fights this thing, if only for the heat it brings to the dems. There are plenty of folks on the Hill who are just as guilty of the same garbage, and some worse.

The bottom line here is this, the American people in general are starting to see that their lives are not improving and their employers are frightened. The second being the most obvious to the idiots with blinders on.
The folks in Washington are clearly elites to which the rules do not apply, look at Timmy Geithner.
Rangel could beat this with his friends the Dems but the American people are not going to accept an incredible unaccountable elite class of crooks for too much longer.

THREE? AND ONLY THIS WEEK?

Why didn’t these 3 and 200 others say something back in 2008 when these charges were first being delayed by Pelosi? Remember she promised to have a conclusion by Jan 2009.

Sort of like waiting until this week to denounce Attilla the Hun. But then, there are stil hundreds of Dems that still haven’t denounced this current “Hun”.

The Congressional Black Caucus needs to stand up against the white racists in congress who are trying to drive a good democrat out of office just because of the color of his skin.

Stand up for Rangel. Do it for social justice.

Actually, Ed, PA-8 is a mostly-suburban district in Bucks County, north of Philadelphia. Definitely a swing district and one the GOP must capture to have a reasonable chance of control of the House. There is a growing number of residents there who commute to the New York metro area though.

The suburban part of the district has a lot of arousal-gappers who are easily swayed by spooky ads and Philadelphia Inquirer editorials (BIRM) warning that even centrist Republicans are eeevil Christian Conservatives in sheep’s clothing.

tarpon on July 30, 2010 at 11:11 AM

PA08 is my district and it may be wealthy but what changed the district was tacking on a section of NE Philly presumably because there was some belief there were Republican votes there. I hope Republicans making changes when redistricting correct some of their errors this time around.

Patrick Murphy is the biggest phony baloney ever to claim the Blue Dog mantle. This is par for the course with him. His first vote on the Appropriations Cmte was a big show vote against Obama’s lawsuit against Arizona. He issued a press release afterward because it was such a rare thing for him to vote against the Obama/Pelosi agenda. Guess what he said when denouncing Rangel:

Today, I broke with my party and called on Congressman Rangel to resign his seat in Congress,” Murphy said in a statement. “Now that we’ve seen the full list of allegations by the House Ethics subcommittee, I believe the time has come for him to step down.”

They are doing everything possible to save this guy including giving him the Appropriations seat. Murphy to my knowledge never returned the 14,000 campaign contributions he received from Rangel in 2008 when he also called on Rangel to step down from Ways and Means right. This happened right after Pelosi gave him permission I am sure. Murphy is trying to cram a few months as a maverick Blue Dog in right before the election. Meanwhile he voted for every blessed thing on the agenda.

Slightly OT: Ganley was initially going to run for the Voinovich seat (my district), but switched to run against Sutton. He’s fearless, a strong fiscal conservative, pro-life, and supports Arizona. His website:
Tom Ganley for U.S. Congress.

These few calls for resignation are just covers for the Dems. The strategy obviously is to assign a few members to carry the criticism and thereby deflect fallout from Rangel to the whole corrupt party.
