It's interesting, in a sad way, that the lefties shut up, mostly, now that it's their guy that's stripping us of our natural rights.

I thought the Patriot Act wasn't much of a problem as long as it was administered properly, with proper respect for the long term goals of the American people - with one caveat - a sunset provision once things died down (figuratively, of course).

Along those lines, where are the war protesters? We're still in Iraq and Afghanistan, right? Lefties still think we are wrong being there, right?

Lefties?

Two things: Criminals and terrorists (fine distinction, of course) will NOT use your typical e-mail account from Google or Yahoo or Hotmail. They will create a fake identity and set up an e-mail account (very easy to do). It will not be traceable to anything personal if they avoid using their own computer. It's much like gun control. It only controls the law-abiding, not the lawbreaking. Some stupid criminals might be caught, but frankly, it doesn't take much intelligence to figure out a way around this. So either the government is being stupid (nah) or has some other motive (to control the proletariat??). Either way, it's nonsense. Oh, and once they get access to the e-mail trace, getting into the e-mail content will be at their fingertips if they so choose. Someone in some dark basement office in some CIA or FBI or NSA building will choose just that eventually, regardless of what the law says. Of course, it will be for our own good.

Interesting times we live in. One of the laws just passed made a government agency free from FOIA requests and now the government will be able to look at your e-mails without a court order. Who is being protected here?

How are e-mail addresses and timestamps on messages any more revealing than phone numbers and listings of when calls were made?

Content. Telephone billing records contain the terminating phone number, whether it was answered, and the duration of the call. The calls themselves are not recorded, so even if a pattern is seen there is no way to tell who spoke to whom and what they said. Email records are just that. Emails.

There is such a thing as excessive targets.

This is, quite simply, tyranny. The government plants its boot on our throats, a term used by a member of this administration, and they treat illegals, tax cheats and crooks as celebrities.

Here is how to rattle a lib even more over this. They will argue that they aren't worried about Obama (PBUH) and this issue (after scolding you on being paranoid). Ask them then if they want this power given to President #45, whomever that may be.

Watch as the simple neural net in their brain stem finally fires and they see the danger.
