Britton ad tells kids, “Better bail faster, Billy!”

posted at 12:15 pm on July 29, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

This may well be the most effective campaign ad I’ve yet seen in this cycle. Len Britton, facing an uphill battle to unseat Senator Pat Leahy in Vermont, offers one of the most concise and visual explanations of debt and its impact on future generations you’ll ever see. CBS News highlighted the ad earlier this week:

Then a man who is sitting in the raft with the kids (and, for some reason, is holding an umbrella) tells another man next to the raft to “hit them with the stimulus,” at which point the second man dumps more water into the boat.

The water, as you might have guessed, is a metaphor for the national debt. After the “stimulus” water is added, one of the kids says to man in the raft, “hey mister, you’re going to sink this boat.”

He responds with a smirk: “Better bail faster, Billy!”

Cue Britton: “Out of control spending is sinking our economy and mortgaging our children’s future. Help me throw our kids a lifeline.”

Memo to GOP candidates: skip the demon sheep and sign up Billy for some bailing. Britton may not have much of a shot of giving Leahy the boot in liberal Vermont, which sent an avowed socialist to the US Senate a few years ago, but this kind of visualization is too good to just let slip under the radar. It may even help Britton close the 35-point gap he faces in Vermont, but it will certainly let other Republican challengers in House and Senate races make the midterm stakes clear.

Great ad! Its simplicity is its strength.

Sharon Angle needs to hire Britton’s ad guy. Quick.

notropis on July 29, 2010 at 12:28 PM

This is exactly the kind of advertising the GOP needs to do. Less Hollywood dramatics, less professional actors, less demonizing of the opposition, just the common-sense message and a little humor. Thats all it takes.

tflst5 on July 29, 2010 at 12:34 PM

Love the “invoice for share of debt” ad at the CBS link. The GOP should share these ads across the nation.

“Better bail faster, Billy!”

Why, will Obama take away his healthcare if he doesn’t.

The majority of the electorate in VT is too busy applying once-a-week organic deodorant or adding urine to their compost to watch this on their TV that broke in 1969.

Good ad, but with their voting patterns aren’t Vermonters too damned stupid to get it?

Is the guy in the boat a public employee?

Rocks on July 29, 2010 at 12:25 PM

Probably. And the umbrella probably represents his belief that he’s protected somehow. But he’s too stupid to realize that if the boat sinks, everyone gets wet.

The idiots in Vermont keep re-electing Leahy. And after sending a socialist to Washington, they deserve EVERYTHING they get.

marinetbryant on July 29, 2010 at 2:25 PM

According to the FEC.gov website, it looks like Len Britton is going to need some more donations to help him defeat Senator Patrick Leahy. http://www.fec.gov/DisclosureSearch/HSRefreshCandList.do?category=stateS_all&stateName=VT&election_yr=2010
As of 6/30 Len Britton has raised $91,1991 compared to Leahy’s $3,191,236. But with strong videos like this a little more money can have a big impact in a small state like Vermont.

Check out Len Britton’s campaign website if you want to learn more about him:

You may also enjoy one of Len Britton’s other videos which is called, “You Better Get a Paper Route, Billy.”

Funny, but sad in its reality…

I wish Len Britton… ANYTHING to unseat Leahy…

Khun Joe on July 29, 2010 at 3:42 PM

It’s sadly funny how many ex-hippies (and current communists) moved from NYC to Vermont. They hold a common hatred for America. As for the joke going around…

“Why did Vermont voters send a Socialist to the Senate?”
“Because there were no Terrorist on the ballot.”

…it’s funny because it’s true!

BTW, the joke hasn’t gotten around yet…I just made it up!

stonemeister on July 29, 2010 at 4:02 PM

As others have noted, it’s a parasol, NOT an umbrella. In Asian cultures a parasol was used exclusively by royalty. I believe that’s the intent, although I’ve been wrong before. (Just ask Mrs. Leprechaun.)

blatantblue on July 29, 2010 at 12:20 PM

It wasn’t just the Massholes. It was also the NYC crowd that moved up there and then wanted building moratoriums to keep those people from the city from ruining the country.

Proof of your second point is in “White Christmas” when Bing warns Danny Kaye that they [the citizens of Vermont] may run him out of the state if they find out he is a Dem.

Maybe, but that doesn’t mean the rest of us deserve him. Unfortunately, his decisions often affect us, too.
