Video: Who’s up for another insanely slick ad from the Republican Governors Association? Update: Old?

posted at 6:55 pm on July 28, 2010 by Allahpundit

Via the Right Scoop. Even Mediaite, in full sneer at the content, can’t help gawking at how remarkably high the production values are. That’s par for the course with the RGA, though. The famous “Remember November” ad from a few months ago was one of the only spots in recent memory that went viral not because of any gimmick in the script but purely by virtue of the atmospherics. Take some recycled footage, add the right ominous music, trick things out with MTV-style editing to create a sense of cyclonic disorientation and voila — you’ve got the RGA special. A staffer told the Daily Caller last time that “Remember November” was cooked up by young staff members, but consider me skeptical. This is just too darned slick.

14 Weeks from Republican Governors Association on Vimeo.

Update: Very strange. I’m seeing lots of coverage online of the RGA ad over the last day or two (the ad is, after all, entitled “14 Weeks,” i.e. 14 weeks until election day), but it looks like the RGA actually released this spot back in March. Maybe it’s a reissue?

I want to be a Republican governor.

That wasn’t too bad. Would have left Romney and McCain out of it though.

Haley Barbour was the best head of the RNC ever and I bet he had his hand in this.

Cindy Munford on July 28, 2010 at 7:01 PM

Yeah. Saw this this morning.
Nice approach. But…
Too long, for my taste.

*If only* they could cut the first 1:45 to 30 seconds
and the last minute (1:45 to 2:45) to 30 seconds,
it would IMHO hold the explosive power of their first ad.

Lockstein13 on July 28, 2010 at 7:01 PM

I saw this yesterday. I love the John Boehner “Oh. My. God.” Not a huge Boehner fan, but those three little words so aptly sum up what 70% or so of the nation is saying every day.

Gotta love the Pelosiism about having to pass the bill to know what is in it. That clip alone is priceless and should be shown over and over.

Nicely done.

I suppose they felt they were playing it safe. Palin has put everything on the line for the US. I saw her not too long along and she had two security guys on stage with her eyeing everything that moved. No doubt she gets death threats constantly.

darwin on July 28, 2010 at 7:14 PM

And yet in the latest Gallup Poll Obama has a 47% approval rating…

Something is missing in this puzzle. Things are bad in the US, but yet a large group of people think Obama and the Democrats are doing a great job.

albill on July 28, 2010 at 7:14 PM

They included pretty much every prominent GOPer in that ad except Governor Palin, who has fought harder for the party than any of those boneheads. Romney? Gingrich? Grahamnesty?

Bachman & Palin have been leading the charge against Obama. These Republicans need an ad with dramatic effect to appear in the fight.

People aren’t stupid. There was one woman in that ad, all it did was make me wonder who she was.

portlandon on July 28, 2010 at 7:17 PM

It’s stuff like this that does get through to the people who don’t pay attention. We needs ads like this after labor day that are high quality and ruthless. The dems deserve no less.

I can’t wait until November and Tennessee, once again, has a GOP Governor!!!!

ladyingray on July 28, 2010 at 7:18 PM

I do wish the GOP would get a clue about ads. They still follow the same old format. Its a mixed message ad.

Its a good ad as far as it goes but it is saying too much in too short a time.

William Amos on July 28, 2010 at 7:18 PM

Remember, remember, come this November
The festering heat they have brought
‘Tis no reason why their assault on Americans
Should ever be forgiven, or forgot

All you tyrants who lord over us
You who give us the smack of your rod
Soon now we will rend you to bits
We will give you the Judgment of God!

Great stuff, but ya…Gingrich/Romney (pvt citizens) but no Palin (an actual Governor!)? strange…could use better balance, and a bit more, um, color in some of the actors.

/just sayin…

ornery_independent on July 28, 2010 at 7:22 PM

Will state one more thing. This is why one more reason why the GOP doesnt win close races. This ad is the best example.

Why ? Because it sends a mixed message. It trashes the opposition while trying to state GOP virtues in two minutes.

That is two seperate messages to try and get across to the veiwers in that limited amount of time.

And the GOP has NOT learned the true value of negative ads. And why this ad falls flat. The purpose of negative ads is not to create the “Chose the lesser of two evils” choice that is thrust on America. Voters want to feel good about voting FOR someone not just voting against someone. That is why this becomes a mixed message. There ia a real purpose to negative advertizing (Is a secret I dont share) and this format is NOT it.

The GOP has to turn elections from being a “Lesser of two evils” debate to one that shows it can win consistantly. The GOP still really lacks a great ad campaign in my opinion.

MTV-style editing

Nothing MTV-style about it. It’s just an accurate, straight-forward message that is well edited. Not hard to do, with all of the material Obama and the Dems have given the GOP since 2006.

What’s amazing is how rare stuff like this is. Shows how inept the RNC is at everthing.

AUINSC on July 28, 2010 at 7:25 PM

Akzed on July 28, 2010 at 7:25 PM

It’s a great ad.

I think it’s plausible to be made by some young staffer who is familiar with Windows Moviemaker or Apple iMovie could make this. Take a look around youtube at fan vids some time, there are some really well done things there that are by people just doing it for fun & love of something or other.

Gingrich should stick to giving US History lectures…from the back row.
The GOP badly needs a UNIFYING conservative voice to emerge.

There’s still time, but it’s an absolute necessity and I’m getting a little uncomfortable with the same old crapola.

ontherocks on July 28, 2010 at 7:33 PM

I can believe that younger staffers had a lot of input. What the GOP needs is participation from the younger group of citizens to help shake the dust off of the old timers. The GOP needs to show that they stand for youth, innovation, achievement. Show the youth WHY the GOP exists and what we believe. They will follow.

I don’t agree that this is too long. It grabbed me, reeled me in, gave me a “thrill up my leg.” Yes, it has the feel of a movie trailer — so what? If it were a documentary film, I’d be camped out overnight for tickets.

Besides, they can pare it down later for wider audiences and TV constraints, just as the movie makers do. This is the director’s cut for now.

The RGA is leaving the DGA in the dust – in fundraising, in advertising, and most importantly in the polls that are showing an unprecedented GOP sweep coming in the Governor’s races. But all it takes is one Web ad that doesn’t have Sarah Palin in it and everyone starts second-guessing.

Seven Percent Solution on July 28, 2010 at 8:24 PM

Look, it’s a good ad, but those making the case that it could use a little more diversity have a point. Yes, I know, we’re above all of that. Well the people it’s supposed to be persuading are not. So it could only help, not hurt, to have more women and other “protected classes” in the video. Surely it’s possible to view it as a good effort but still see room for improvement, yes?

I will grant that in terms of production values, it is head and shoulders above the crap the RNC puts out.
