Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on July 28, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Today I’ll let Michael Ramirez, the two-time Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist for Investors Business Daily, explain the fatuousness of Barack Obama’s scheduling:
Well, it’s not like he had anything better to do, or as though he disappointed a large group of community-minded American children, or anything:
President Barack Obama, the honorary chairman of the Boy Scouts of America, will not speak in-person before the group on Wednesday at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia, as part of the organization’s 100th anniversary celebration. However, the president is sending a videotaped message to the scouts for Wednesday, the same day he will be in Manhattan to tape an appearance for ABC TV’s talk show “The View.”
Bob Dries, chairman of national news and media at the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree – a gathering that happens every four years and attracts thousands of scouts from around the world – told CNSNews.com that the organization was told on Monday that the president had scheduling conflicts and would not be speaking in-person at the week-long event.
The BSA had scheduled its Wednesday arena program to include remarks by the president at 11 a.m. in front of the more than 45,000 scouts who will be in attendance.
The White House did not confirm to CNSNews.com that the president would not speak live at the Jamboree on Wednesday, but reporters were sent an e-mail at 1:45 p.m. on Monday announcing that the president will be in New Jersey on Wednesday afternoon to talk about the economy before he travels on to New York City to film his appearance for “The View’s” Thursday edition.
Priorities.
Ramirez has a terrific collection of his works: Everyone Has the Right to My Opinion, which covers the entire breadth of Ramirez’ career, and it gives fascinating look at political history. Read my review here, and watch my interviews with Ramirez here and here. And don’t forget to check out the entire Investors.com site, which has now incorporated all of the former IBD Editorials, while individual investors still exist.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

The irony. A guy who’s blind and oblivious to all that is going on goes on a cotton-candy, menstrual show titled “the View”….
Ramirez nails it as usual.

When is America going to recognize the hazard implicit in having a President who does not understand his job? Can we pass a resolution to make it 2012 today? Will we ever recover from this disastrous administration?
Sheesh!

I thought that it was all “for the children.” What’s the matter with you, Mr. President?
ss396 on July 28, 2010 at 8:13 AM
Actually, the decision to appear on The View instead of at the BSA Jamboree is very shrewd: If he goes to the former event, he’ll only probably look less manly; at the latter event, he’ll definitely look less manly.

He has a constituant group that loathes the BSA. Remember, Donk Convention, LA? Booed off the stage.
Ten bucks says it comes up on The View.
hawkdriver on July 28, 2010 at 8:18 AM
Obama needs to keep his base happy. His numbers are in free fall and he knows Boy Scouts (and their parents) don’t support his plans. His Presidential duties have no sway in this. It’s all about “The O”.

Talk to a bunch of snotty nosed kids who can’t vote or get Monica’ed on The View in front of an audience of lard butt, mouth breathers sitting on the couch drawing unemployment from Dear Leader’s stash. No brainer.

He isn’t a President, he is a celebrity. That is all he ever wanted to be. He loves the attention, the elaborate parties, and expensive trips. He should just have gotten his own reality show and left America alone.

apostic on July 28, 2010 at 8:33 AM
As hawkdriver pointed out, a large part of O’s base hates the Boy Scouts. They require that the scouts believe in a Supreme Being and they don’t allow gays.

What more do we need to see before we amit that the President has no respect for America and her institutions? He is the most narcissistic president we have had in our lifetimes. His fun and his family’s fun seem to be more important than the U.S. Make him gone…but first, make him irrelevant in November.

Priorities indeed.
Rovin on July 28, 2010 at 8:40 AM
His hubris could be his undoing. If the GOP makes significant gains this November I hope that they do the things that Obama promised but didn’t deliver on – bipartisan solutions that help the country.
If they don’t do things smartly Obama stands a good chance of being re-elected. Remember when Clinton shut the government down in ’95 and successfully laid the blame on the GOP?
Bradky on July 28, 2010 at 8:41 AM
Maybe because the scouts are taught to be good citizens and to respect our institutions. Make them pawns in a political crossfire is wrong.

OT: Obama is gonna miss a major Boy Scout event in DC, b/c he will fly to NY to be on The Spew. Obama will send his teleprompter to do the speech for him. O, this is inexcusable, KIDS FIRST, and as a Cub Scout mom, toast doesn’t even describe my sentiments!
This (from the FOX News comments section) was the one that really got to me, since the last three presidents attended.
Here it goes:

NOT goint to the Boy Scout Jamboree…..Say What ??? This guy has his priorities ALL WRONG !! …Lets see, speak to 40,000 future leaders, or appear on a GOSSIP fluff show…. ??? Hummmm …. which one will be most remembered..???? When I was a scout I went to the National Jamboree in 1969….. that year a famous eagle scout, took a little time out of his busy schedule to “phone in” his greeting…. that was Neal Armstrong.. and at the time HE WAS ON THE MOON !!! Somehow I gotta think that Mr. Obama could find time to put in a little time, building some good-will with the same guys that will be called to defend this country in the next few years !! If he spent 4 hours at the Jamboree, he would get more positive press than he has received in the last 6 months ! Like I said, his priorities are just a little messed up ! A former scout, a parent of a scout, a voter !

I do remember. I am not quite sure what the impact of a government shut down would be today. I don’t think as many people view the government as a necessary cog to their daily existence anymore. I think the days of people blindly letting the government go their unbridled lengths are over. At least for a while. I don’t know what it would take to be lulled back into complacency but I am positive we aren’t there.

Now let’s see….
A scout is trustworthy, loyal, and helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.
How many of these attributes can Obama claim?
Lew_Lew on July 28, 2010 at 8:56 AM
Do we have a bona fide hero who can step in for Obama in his absence and show him up?
I didn’t realize that, as president, he’s honorary chairman of the BSA.
This is an extraordinary slap in the face.
BuckeyeSam on July 28, 2010 at 8:57 AM
I was in uniform at the time and we didn’t get paid – yes we got the money when government was “turned back on” but my point is that there are vital functions that should not be shut down. Things such as the center for disease control, FAA, ag inspectors come to mind.
And of course impact on local economies dependent to a degree on the government to spend money on products and services.

Actually, maybe I’m glad he’s going on the View. Already he’s overexposed and people are wishing he would pay more attention to doing his job and less to campaigning. Appearing on the View, of all shows, may be giving his critics more ammunition than he bargained for.
petefrt on July 28, 2010 at 9:08 AM
I thought of Petraeus at first, but he’s out of the country, leading a war. Armstrong can go, (IMHO he must give the speech) because he’s not in the Moon. Could be the eldest active Scout so far in the country.
I’d send Sarah since there’s character, survival skills, hunting and love of nature, God, family and the military but what the heck, that’d be a big no-no!/sarc

Keemo on July 28, 2010 at 9:09 AM
I have an idea for a political cartoon for anyone that can draw (I can’t). Imagine President Obama standing over a pot of soup that represents the United States of America, and he is tasting the soup. He has a look on his face that the soup is not to his liking and his thoughts are, “You know what this needs to make it better . . . more government.”
BioTeachEd on July 28, 2010 at 9:11 AM
It didn’t last long but at that time we were living from paycheck to paycheck on E-6 pay plus a part time job to make ends meet.
Didn’t starve but was certainly inconvenient.
Bradky on July 28, 2010 at 9:11 AM
I read this article and it mentions that some presidents never addressed the jamboree. Understand the frustration with him opting for the View instead of attending but on the other hand is it a major story being taken out of context?
Bradky on July 28, 2010 at 9:13 AM
I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again today…oh how I wish we had a president who would decline an invitation to appear on The View. I wonder if any of his “advisers” told him this was a bad idea? Can you imagine what leaders like Putin or the Iranian tyrant will think? Mr. President really is a pantywaist.

Cindy Munford on July 28, 2010 at 9:22 AM
So I put in the word dense on thesaurus.com and this perfectly describes a “leader” who would choose to be on the view vs. speaking with the Boy Scouts of America
dense
Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: slow, stupid
Synonyms: blockheaded, boorish, doltish, dull, dumb, fatheaded, ignorant, imbecilic, impassive, lethargic, numskulled, oafish, obtuse, phlegmatic, simple, slow-witted, sluggish, stolid, thick, torpid
Yup, that’s our president!
scalleywag on July 28, 2010 at 9:26 AM
Don’t forget “articulate”. Is articulate on the list of scout qualities? I can’t remember…too many years ago.
Extrafishy on July 28, 2010 at 9:28 AM
Add to my list Mike Rowe (of Dirty Jobs)…he was a Scout too. And imagine that speech!
ProudPalinFan on July 28, 2010 at 9:29 AM
I understand what you are saying.
Looking ahead it is my opinion that in terms of strategy the GOP will need to marginalize him. How? I think by complimenting him for his likeability and convictions on a liberal agenda. Use that as the launching point to contrast how those approaches are out of touch with the mainstream wishes.
The negative tactics will make his supporters more entrenched and easier to set gotcha traps for the GOP. Remember Reagan and his “there you go again” retort. He criticized Carter but in general stayed on the high road.
The approach I suggest makes it easier for people on the fence about him to come to the conclusion “yeah he is a nice guy and all but he just isn’t the right guy for the job”.
Bradky on July 28, 2010 at 9:29 AM

ProudPalinFan on July 28, 2010 at 9:37 AM
My friends, the GOP tried this in 2008.
Inanemergencydial on July 28, 2010 at 9:37 AM
The part about his spot on the View to me is that it’s so obvious. He’s responding to Sherrod’s criticism that he’s out of touch with people. What the View does well, in its free-style way, is represent the opinions of a variety of people in real life. They really do just spout off, like most of us! (And Journolist, too, apparently! *haha)
So he’s “connecting.”
It reminds me of what I learned about life awhile back. My “solutions” were often worse than my “problems.” :)
AnninCA on July 28, 2010 at 9:38 AM
I am totally against this, because they are already doing it. They are always talking about how smart and persuasive he is. While I agree with not criticizing him as a person, they need to just push alternative ideas forward. Leave personalities totally out of the conversation. I don’t understand why you think compromise is the answer when the Left has not given an inch in their agenda. And, oh by the way, have blamed everything on the right when they had filibuster proof majorities in Congress and the presidency. I am not in the mood to compromise now.
Cindy Munford on July 28, 2010 at 9:39 AM

Inanemergencydial on July 28, 2010 at 9:47 AM
I should have picked a better phrase. I agree with you about leaving personalities out of it which is pretty much what I was trying to say. As for compromise I think people need to be realistic. If the GOP gets the house back they will not have numbers to ram through anything such as the dems have done.
Focus on good incremental changes and modifications that can get bipartisan buy in. It shows the GOP is competent about representing the electorate. If Obama draws a line in the sand and vetoes it makes him the bad guy and hurts his reelection chances.
But if the mantra of no compromise – take no prisoners becomes the battle cry Obama will have a very good case in 2012 that the GOP couldn’t deliver. Fair or not it will be the story line that the GOP let him write.
Bradky on July 28, 2010 at 9:48 AM
That’s an interesting spin. I think he’s acting like a buffoon and it makes him look even more out of touch with Americans. Look at the cartoon again. See anything up there that looks a little more important than a talk show?

While I am not quite sure why the Right always has to be the one to compromise, I am sure some will indeed need to be done. Mainly because I am not sure the GOP will retake all of Congress. But I don’t think promoting compromise is going to get Republicans elected. Promotion of better ideas and the failure of current strategies is the prescription needed now.
