Great news: New electric car costs only slightly more than average annual per capita income
posted at 7:29 pm on July 28, 2010 by Allahpundit
Sticker price: $41,000. Per capita income: $39,138. No worries, though. You get a $7,500 tax credit for buying one, so in effect, this baby costs only slightly north of … $33,000. Which, really, is a small price to pay for showing How Much You Care.
As a noted RINO candy-ass, I of course will be exploring my purchase options immediately.
So now that we have a fixed price, let’s recap the subsidy math. The president has bludgeoned state-owned GM to put out a plug-in hybrid vehicle that is, according to the Post, more than twice as expensive as a comparable gasoline-driven car. To entice motorists to buy these untested contraptions, the government will give each one a $7,500 subsidy, and another grand if they install their own charger at home (apartment owners of course, are out of luck, and get to subsidize homeowners with this one). President Obama wants a million electric cars on the road by 2015, and since vast cost-saving advances are unlikely to occur so quickly, it’s safe to assume the subsidy would remain, sucking only $8.5 billion dollars out of taxpayers coffers to subsidize people willing to buy a more expensive car than they actually need. Of course, GM isn’t fully on board with Obama’s vision, only planning to sell 40,000 Volts by 2013. So that’s only $340 million being taken from low-end-car Peter to bribe high-end-shopper Paul.
Of course, that’s only the direct subsidies. IBM’s vice president for energy and utilities, Allan Schurr, estimates that 80 percent of vehicles aren’t parked in the garage of the person who owns them, which means there are going to have to be a lot of public charging stations built at taxpayer expense. And the gasoline that electric owners don’t consume also takes tax revenue out of the Highway Trust Fund, meaning that if there is massive penetration of cars that don’t use gasoline, some other way will have to be found to maintain transportation infrastructure.
Fully loaded it runs close to $45,000, and apparently, “The seats are a little flimsy and the interior has a small-car feel to it.” But you can run 40 miles on the electric charge alone — take note, school-shuttling parents — and then build it out to 340 miles with a full tank of gas. Exit question: Out: The health-insurance mandate. In: The Volt mandate?
Update: From Meric1837 in the comments, heart-ache:
Lets do some math:
Chevy Volt: $41,000 (True Cost)
Honda Civic: $20,000 (Average build)
Difference: $21,000Gas: $2.45/gal (in Oklahoma City)
The difference in price would buy 8,571.43 gallons of gas. The Civic gets an average of 29 miles to the gallon. That’s 248,581.47 miles on the price difference.Assuming the average driver drives 12,000 miles a year, AND you only drive the Volt on the 40 mile range of it’s battery, using no gas, you’d have to own the Volt for 20.7 years to justify the price difference in gas savings. How long’s that warranty again?

Heh. I like the idea, in theory: Charge my car up at home overnight, not have to get gas. But of course in reality it isn’t feasible yet at an acceptable cost. I say that we force the liberals to all get one without a subsidy. OR at least all the environmentalists. Let them pay for it. And how could they complain? Using government force to take money from them is what they are all about.
Meanwhile, I keep on going with my 97 Isuzu.

Yeah, that 400 miles on a tank of gas is stupid. Ford Fusion Hybrid gets 700 miles to a tank and you are suppose to be able to recoup the expense between a regular Fusion and the hybrid in 5.6 years. Still not worth it but it seems better then the Volt.

That’s if you’re using the “Optional” 240 volt charging station. If you don’t have that and are using the standard 115 volt setup it comes with it takes 8 hours.

MeatHeadinCA on July 28, 2010 at 7:43 PM
Not to worry. They’ll just raise electrical rates and siphon some of that money off for the highways.
I’m ROTFLMAO! for those who think they’re ‘reducing their carbon footprint’ because they aren’t burning gasoline. Guess all those electrical generating plants burning oil or coal to recharge their precious electric car don’t count.
There’s also the re-sale value down the road. Who wants to buy a used electric vehicle who’s battery will soon need to be replaced to the tune of several thousand dollars.
People have embraced new technology ONLY when it’s found to be cheaper or faster, safer or better than the technology it is replacing. This sounds like another “1st time home buyer/Cash for clunkers” failure. Which has become the norm of Democratic planning.

Excellent! I paid 9 grand for my 2004 Hyundai Accent and it gets about 38-40 miles to the gallon on my current 90 mile RT. I just paid it off a couple of months ago and it has just over 98,000 miles on it.
Or I could buy the Volt and walk the last 5 miles to work (unless I choose to use the gas charger). In the neighborhood where I work, I’m sure it will still be there when I walk back at the end of the day (rolls eyes).

On a similar subject the local university and the local community college have special parking spots for such vehicles in the prime parts of the lots. I suspect they usually go empty. It seems there is far too much emphasis on these vehicles. Their real environmental impact is understated and there are other ways to conserve. Why shouldn’t people who car pool and replace four vehicles on the road have the prime spots? What if someone chooses to drive only 5 miles to school in their Chevy Impala rather than 30 to the competing school not get to use these spots? I have to wonder why the push is so strong . It seems logic has gone out the window. I suspect money has something to do with it or just the ordinary whacked governmental thinking.

But this tinnie little four-wheel moped?
At $40k a pop?
Who in their right mind would overspend to get a lemon?
More sales for the other guys…still expensive…but a lot cheaper than GM’s entry.
Might start looking around for a regular old Yugo, maybe a Lada…they got super gas mileage and actually went a lot more than 40 miles before having to find a gas station…and they were cheap to make, cheap to buy, cheap to operate. And duct tape took care of any major problems.
In this economy…$40k for a car…for the average American family?
These guys really do not have a clue, do they?

Hey just ask the taxpayer to subsidize it more.
Just look at the joke known as solar panels. The payback takes upwards of 40 years but hey when the tax payer gets to pay for half of the panels for you you never know you might be able to afford it.
CWforFreedom on July 28, 2010 at 7:55 PM
It will fail in California. Two reasons: a.) The Volt doesn’t qualify for CA’ $5,000 tax credit for vehicles like this. b.) NO ACCESS TO THE CARPOOL LANE. CA still allows a waiver for single passengers who drive AT-PZEV vehicles to ride on the carpool lane.
If this fails in Cali, it succeeds nowhere else.

Well technically you could use the Volt as a completely carbon free vehicle. But you’d have to limit your driving to the 40 miles per battery charge plus purchase your electricity through a green energy company.
So in the end, you’ll pay a huge premium for an electric car that you can only drive short distances and you’ll have to pay extra to power your home. All so you can feel better about not contributing to manmade global warming which likely doesn’t even exist.
