Arizona’s tourism industry has a target on its back, but the widespread boycotts over the state’s immigration law might not be hitting the mark.
Recent data compiled by a market research group show hotel bookings across the state — as well as in tourism hot spots Phoenix and Scottsdale — have been on the rise the past two months…
“Fundamentally, the boycotts have been unsuccessful,” said Barry Broome, president of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council.

Twenty-four percent of Hispanics questioned in the poll favor the new law, with 71 percent opposed. Support for the measure jumps to 61 percent among white respondents, with opposition dropping to 34 percent among whites.
The survey also suggests divisions among older and younger Hispanics.
“The biggest difference in the Hispanic community on this issue is the generation gap,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Forty-five percent of Hispanics who are 50 or older support Arizona’s law. Among Hispanics who are younger than 50, support for the new measure drops to 17 percent. Three-quarters of younger Hispanics oppose the law.”

In a bid to remake the enforcement of federal immigration laws, the Obama administration is deporting record numbers of illegal immigrants and auditing hundreds of businesses that blithely hire undocumented workers.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency expects to deport about 400,000 people this fiscal year, nearly 10 percent above the Bush administration’s 2008 total and 25 percent more than were deported in 2007. The pace of company audits has roughly quadrupled since President George W. Bush’s final year in office…
Morton said the 400,000 people expected to be deported this year — either physically removed or allowed to leave on their own power — represent the maximum the overburdened processing, detention and immigration court system can handle.

One thing the AP gets right is that the Dems consider Hispanics a critical constituency, in both the shorter and longer term. But given the trend, and Obama’s even more anemic numbers on whether he is meeting the needs of Hispanic voters, Dems seeking to energize this constituency have their work cut out for them. The Obama administration’s demagogy over Arizona’s immigration law boosted their ratings on some issues, but the big picture is one of skidding support.

To say that Bush’s was a very low bar is actually putting it very mildly.
“The Bush administration, which is vowing to crack down on U.S. companies that hire illegal workers, virtually abandoned such employer sanctions before it began pushing to overhaul U.S. immigration laws last year, government statistics show.
Between 1999 and 2003, work-site enforcement operations were scaled back 95 percent by the Immigration and Naturalization Service, which subsequently was merged into the Homeland Security Department. The number of employers prosecuted for unlawfully employing immigrants dropped from 182 in 1999 (Clinton)to four in 2003 (Bush), and fines collected declined from $3.6 million (Clinton)to $212,000 (Bush), according to federal statistics.
In 1999, the United States initiated fines against 417 companies (Clinton). In 2004, it issued fine notices to three (Bush).”

As this immigration debate rages on, I have been looking at what the real motivating factor is…because the surface issues are never the real issue. It’s never really about what proponents and defenders say it’s about.
So here’s my take…
We have always had illegal immigrants amongst us, so why is it now a big deal? Why the uproar over illegal immigration? Why not allow those already here have amnesty, like Reagan did in the 80′s? Why are Hispanics (and neighbors to the south) getting all the attention related to illegal immigration…they aren’t the only illegal immigrants we have here. How many “students” have come here to attend school and overstayed their visa? Why aren’t we making an issue out of them..targeting them? Here’s why I think…the newest generation of illegals from the south have a different attitude of those that came before them. Their ancestors who came here illegally were looking for work and for a better life for themselves. The latest generation of illegals are looking for a free ride. They might be looking for work too, but they are looking for work to make money to send home while the rely on the government to support them here. Illegals come here to have a child so that child is now eligible for government assistance. It’s called Birth Tourism and it’s big business. The newest generation of illegals take to the streets to protest that our government give them more stuff, while waving their Mexican flags. This is also the generation who refuses to learn English and expects you to be able to communicate with them in their native language.
This newest generation coming into our country has a totally different attitude as those that came before them. And I believe this attitude is what is driving the anti-immigrant sentiment we currently see today.

We got SCREWED with the Reagan Amnesty of 2 million. We were PROMISED that the borders would be secured. Now 12-20 million want amnesty and there is NO discussion of securing the borders.
The public is NOT going to buy amnesty, much less even tolerate it’s discussion UNTIL THE BORDERS ARE SECURED.
Why does Washington find that so difficult to comprehend?
GarandFan on July 27, 2010 at 11:09 PM
Why the uproar? Because after realizing that Reagan’s 1986 signing of the first of several amnesties failed miserably, we don’t want a repeat on a much bigger scale.
No one advocating for amnesty can explain what disincentives will exist to discourage the NEXT 12 to 20 million foreigners from illegally crossing the border.
Granting earned residency to illegal aliens is the same as granting earned ownership to jewel thieves. If you reward thieves with their ill-gotten goods (residency or jewels), you inevitably get more criminals. Duh.
And HERE is what Americans want – attrition through enforcement. And it’s WORKING.

Brewer Seeks Dismissal of Obama Challenge to Immigration Law
PHOENIX — Attorneys for Gov. Jan Brewer have asked a judge to throw out the U.S. Justice Department’s challenge to the state of Arizona’s new immigration law.
The governor’s lawyers said Monday the federal government hasn’t shown it has suffered actual harm from the law and instead bases its claim on speculation.

Under the Radar?
Late last week the administration decided — apropos of nothing — to upgrade the diplomatic status of the PLO mission in Washington.
From now on, the PLO will be allowed to fly its flag like a regular embassy.
Its representatives will enjoy diplomatic immunity just like diplomats from states.
Indeed the PLO delegate in Washington Maen Areikat claimed that the administration’s move equates the PLO’s diplomatic status in the US to that of Canada and states in Western Europe.
To put this move in perspective, it is worth comparing the PLO’s new status to that of the US’s firm ally and fellow democracy — Taiwan, the Republic of China. Whereas the PLO now has a “delegation general” in Washington, Taiwan has the “Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office.”

Now the king told the boogie men
You have to let that raga drop
The oil down the desert way
Has been shakin’ to the top
The sheik he drove his Cadillac
He went a-cruisin’ down the ville
The muezzin was a’ standing
On the radiator grille
CHORUS:
The shareef don’t like it
Rockin’ the Casbah
Rock the Casbah
The shareef don’t like it
Rockin’ the Casbah
Rock the Casbah
By order of the prophet
We ban that boogie sound
Degenerate the faithful
With that crazy Casbah sound
But the Bedouin they brought out
The electric camel drum
The local guitar picker
Got his guitar picking thumb
As soon as the shareef
Had cleared the square
They began to wail
CHORUS
Now over at the temple
Oh! They really pack ‘em in
The in crowd say it’s cool
To dig this chanting thing
But as the wind changed direction
The temple band took five
The crowd caught a whiff
Of that crazy Casbah jive
CHORUS
The king called up his jet fighters
He said you better earn your pay
Drop your bombs between the minarets
Down the Casbah way
As soon as the shareef was
Chauffeured outta there
The jet pilots tuned to
The cockpit radio blare
As soon as the shareef was
Outta their hair
The jet pilots wailed
CHORUS
He thinks it’s not kosher
Fundamentally he can’t take it
You know he really hates it

Does the Hispanic community, that is legal, and/or naturalized, living in this country, support or not support the Arizona law. Irregardless of the over/under 50 demographic.
I ask because, we hear of a mass exodus of Hispanics from Arizona. I cannot believe legal Hispanic Americans would do that. And are they all Hispanics? I heard there could be blue eyed, blond, Swedish bikini Budweiser girls, might be moving to Nevada. To some town called Lost Wages, I heard.

How is this not racist? They only care, apparently, about hispanics avoiding the law and don’t care about the laws and integrity of the United States. Ethnic, tribal allegiance trumps everything.
71% of hispanics oppose hispanics having to obey the law, 94% of blacks vote for Obama, and all the time we hear this theatrical screeching about the limitless, racist evil of the Evil Racist White Man. This is not about civil rights or equal justice; it’s racist campaigning for non-white “tribes” and persecution of white people.

Deportation actions and workplace enforcement are important parts in a comprehensive policy but in terms of raw numbers, small parts. Without adequate border control, it’s like bailing out a leaking rowboat with a soup spoon.
`
`
These actions are relatively high profile and very popular with the public, so Obama hopes to build credibility on the issue without actually addressing the real problem.
`
`
We’ve have amnesty reforms twice already, both with the solemn promise of tough future border enforcement. Even an easy mark won’t fall for the same con three times. We won’t get fooled again – this time the border problem comes first, then we discuss the rest once we are at least showing strong progress on the border.

ted c on July 28, 2010 at 3:48 AM
It needs to be a layered plan. The front line is the border itself, it needs to be guarded and it is not. The second area is in the cities/areas where illegals go–businesses, contracting, etc.–laws need to be enforced. Third is in government—no handouts and ask questions (AZ).
So, AZ is doing number three, trying to do number 1 with some NG troops, and people are beginning to self deport. Common sense, prevailing once again.

However, isn’t “allowing” someone to leave the same as “allowing” someone to stay? I’m sure the French allowed the German’s to leave in WWII also. Funny thing, they didn’t leave until actual force was applied.

I think the Obama administration made a huge error in citing commerce relationships with “other countries” as a reason for Federal oversight. That really irritated people even more to think that Mexico is dicting our federal policy, particularly given their own border laws.
AnninCA on July 28, 2010 at 7:56 AM
Thinking people would realize that if you want to eliminate “profiling” you have to eliminate illegal immigration. As long as the present system exists, people will always wonder if individual Hispanics are here legally or not. Many people will be hesitant to hire, house and interact with them which perpetuates their not learning English and maintaining their own culture. The sheer numbers make this a reality. The people most hurt by illegal immigration are the legal immigrants. Those over age 50 appear to realize this to a greater extent.

That is exactly what stuck out to me in reading this post also.
Obama always leaves a back door when attempting to make any decision. His MO is to always “appear” like he is making a stand but if you read the fine print…..he is playing both sides.
Just like the Lockerbie bombing suspect release. The letter pretty much plays to both sides of the issue…..”we would prefer he not be released……If he is going to be released, the humanitarian thing to do is let him go in Scotland.”……
……..instead of just demanding that he not be let go and taking a stand…..it’s “lets play both sides so we can always claim victory”.
Releasing illegals and letting them go back to Mexico “on their own” is no more deportation than the Health Care Bill is deficit neutral.
Baxter Greene on July 28, 2010 at 10:04 AM
Deportations are a band-aid on a spurting, gaping wound. Until the gashes in the borders are sutured, the bleeding will continue.
Random Numbers (Brian Epps) on July 28, 2010 at 10:06 AM
They understand it. They just assume they can cram it down our throats like Obamacare, TARP, financial reform and the rest of their statist programs.
I suck at math, but it seems to me that, if we really secure the borders and continue with 400,000 deportations a year combined with the masses of illegals who will leave the country of their own accord, the problem will be essentially solved in ten years. Too optimistic?
