Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on July 27, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Once again, Barack Obama tries to make the case that he feels our pain:

He says he and first lady Michelle Obama took a hit like everybody else when the economy nearly collapsed, telling ABC that a college fund for daughters Malia and Sasha has gone “up and down” with the stock market.

Obama says the first couple is “not that far removed from what most Americans are going through.” He tells the network “it was just a few years ago that we had high credit card balances, we had two kids, thinking about college. We had our own retirement accounts, wondering if we were going to be able to get enough assets in there.”

Uh, when the economy nearly collapsed, the Obamas were earning millions of dollars in book royalties and Obama was a US Senator on his way to the White House.  His retirement account would have come from the American taxpayer with just one more term in the Senate, and is now secure with his presidential pension.  Meanwhile, his books still roll up tons of cash, which hardly puts Obama in the position of having to determine whether he can afford to spend money on food.

Meanwhile, the Obama family will be pretty far removed for their vacation:

The White House says first lady Michelle Obama will travel to Spain next week for a private trip with longtime family friends.

Mrs. Obama will be traveling with her youngest daughter, Sasha. President Barack Obama and daughter Malia will not be on the trip.

And while in Spain, they won’t be traveling on $20 a day:

Mother and daughter would come to the southern holiday resort of Marbella on a “private visit in the company of old friends,” the source told the German Press Agency…

Spanish media reports said Michelle Obama and her younger daughter Sasha, 9, would be on Spain’s Costa del Sol between August 4 and 8.  There had been speculation that Barack Obama might also come to Spain to celebrate his 49th birthday on August 4.

Michelle Obama has reserved about 30 rooms for herself and her daughter, their friends and bodyguards at a five-star hotel in Benahavis near Marbella, hotel sources said.

Not far removed, eh?  How many of those struggling Americans have ever been to Spain, at a five-star resort?

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

I’m shocked, Ed. Are you actually instigating anger against Obama on this thread?

Spain seems a bit dangerous for a little girl given the separatists there. But then, who’d want to mess with taking on the big mouth with biceps atop the first family. /mamagrizzly’s cross party lines

Michelle’s Spain trip (during Obama*s birthday) is preceded by their weekend vacation in Florida and when she comes back it is 10 days of vacation fun in Matha’s Vineyard…

Why so many vacations Michelle? Too much stress at the White House? Or???
Is there going to be a Marilyn Monroe-type, “Happy Birthday to you Mr. President” moment when the secret (acccording to Esquire magazine) Obama (girl)friend shows up at his birthday party while Michelle is away???

I don’t know about you, but my social network is the same as my socio-economic class. That means that my “long-time friends” are just as broke as I am. Neither they, or I, can afford to vacation for days on end at a five-star resort in Spain. Who are the “friends”?

I wonder if the Obamas participated in Bright Start? The 529 Alexi Giannoulias ran. Alexi was shocked, shocked I tell you, that the bond/fixed income portion of the fund had gone down by some 20 percent.

And, well, Spain’s Costa del Sol is prettier that the Gulf Coast this time of year. Oh, it looks good on you though…

We had our own retirement accounts, wondering if we were going to be able to get enough assets in there.”

Poor management of his assets are no excuse. Is it our fault that the then Senator overpaid Tony Rezko?

“It was simply not good enough that I paid above the appraised value for the strip of land that he sold me. It was a mistake to have been engaged with him at all in this or any other personal business dealing that would allow him, or anyone else, to believe that he had done me a favor,” the senator said.

The President of the United States came down here, met with us in person, and this is what he told us. He said this to me. He said, “Governor, if people lose their jobs because of the moratorium, they can file a BP claim. I said, “Mr. President, with all due respect, what if BP doesn’t pay?” He said, “Don’t worry, Governor, they can file an unemployment claim.”

“a private trip with longtime family friends.?”

Spain?

Has anyone informed the First Lady that Spain introduced African slaves to the Western hemisphere back in the early 1500′s, about the time the Segovia Alcazar Royal Court of Isabella “outlawed” the taking of Native Americans as slaves? [After all, apparently Obama gave the UK back that famous statue of Churchill because his umbrage at Winston's alleged involvement in suppressing Mau-Mau.]

As for the trip itself…

If the First Lady were looking for Hispanic/Iberian “flavor,” there are oodles and oodles of locales all across America that have local summer festivals and such celebrating everything from cooking to goat roping, Mariachi to Salsa, and beyond.

Might help stimulate the economy of many a stricken American town as well.

This trip is no Obamteurism…it is flaunt it whilst ya got it…and to the once-working full time American family guy [over 10% of the workforce) perhaps a bit tacky, too.

coldwarrior on July 27, 2010 at 8:42 AM

Come on people, you can’t begrudge our elites their little distractions. After all, do you know just how much work it is to be constantly expected to tell the rest of us how to live while ignoring those dictates in order to maintain appearances as light-workers?

Sheesh, you would think people believed they were actually enjoying living as American royalty or something. Noblesse Oblige is such a burden after all.

Cake for them and the unions.
Crumbs for us from the cake taken from us.

Folks, it takes thirty rooms of help to get M’chell from this: M’chell-Said Speech

….to the way we see her in the White House. Makeup person, hair straightener person, hairdresser, masseuse, back-waxer, dresser, shoe person, belt courier, etc, etc. This is one high-maintenance broad.

PS Note the finger.

Hmmmm.

“Michelle Obama has reserved about 30 rooms for herself and her daughter, their friends and bodyguards at a five-star hotel in Benahavis near Marbella, hotel sources said.”

So we the taxpayers are paying for “their friends” to go on a vacation in Spain and staying at a 5 star hotel??

memomachine on July 27, 2010 at 12:44 PM

It saddens me that the first family has fallen on such hard times that they could book only 30 rooms. And it doesn’t look like their Portugese Water Dog will be going either. (wipes a tear). Perhaps we should send them some money.

Oh, wait…

Not far removed, eh? How many of those struggling Americans have ever been to Spain, at a five-star resort?

Yup! How many Americans are struggling just to find a job? How many are struggling to rebuild, in vain, their 401k’s, and retirement accounts? How many have had to delve into college funds, just to make ends meet? How many as you’ve said, have had to decide between food, gas, a/c, heat or anything else of necessity?

Meanwhile, Michelle books 30 rooms for family, and friends, and security? And just how much of this is being booked onto the backs of tax payers?

If the Obama’s had any decency, only one vacation a year, and 2 weeks max, and they’d pay for it themselves. That’s far more than most are getting.

Can anyone remember back in February 2009, as Obama read the teleprompter giving his State of the Union address…being met with wild cheering and love-crazed applause?

Can anyone remember Obama’s promises?

President Barack Obama promised a nation shuddering in economic crisis…that he would lead it from a dire “day of reckoning” to a brighter future, summoning politicians and public alike to shoulder responsibility for hard choices and shared sacrifice.

Apparently, neither can Barrack. And certainly not Michelle.

“Discover true Spanish charm in the mountains of Marbella at The Hotel Villa Padierna where on a clear day you can see the coastline of Africa…”

Greyledge Gal on July 27, 2010 at 10:09 AM

Ruh-roh. If she’s going to Marbella just so she’ll be able to say afterward that for the first time in her life she’s really proud of her husband’s home country, she’s got the wrong coast.

I would like to believe that no one is stupid enough to buy this line of crap from BHO, but I live in CA now and know people do here. It’s simply maddening…

MannyT-vA on July 27, 2010 at 6:50 PM

Who’s paying for this 30-room vacation?
