Mexico prison guards let inmates out for massacres

posted at 10:55 am on July 26, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Mexico likes to blame its gun violence on the US, and gun-control advocates love to repeat the canard that 90% the weapons in Mexico come from the US.  (It’s actually less than 20%; more of them come from Mexican Army deserters.)  They’ll have a little more trouble with that argument after this weekend.  Mexico discovered that the perpetrators of several massacres are now behind bars, and were behind bars before the massacres — before prison guards let them out and armed them for their murderous rampages:

Guards and officials at a prison in northern Mexico allegedly let inmates out, lent them guns and allowed them to use official vehicles to carry out drug-related killings, including the massacre of 17 people last week, prosecutors said Sunday.

After carrying out the killings the inmates would return to their cells, the Attorney General’s Office said in a revelation that was shocking even for a country wearied by years of drug violence and corruption.

“According to witnesses, the inmates were allowed to leave with authorization of the prison director … to carry out instructions for revenge attacks using official vehicles and using guards’ weapons for executions,” office spokesman Ricardo Najera said at a news conference.

The gang at Gomez Palacio were responsible for 33 murders in three incidents, including the massacre of 17 people at a rented hall filled mainly with young adults.  They fired more than 120 rounds into the crowd; it was the bullet casings that led investigators back to Gomez Palacio.  The prison director and three of his henchmen have been placed under house arrest, although considering this story, that may wind up being more secure than prison anyway.

This should impress the truth on people, which is that the problem in Mexico isn’t American guns, or any kind of guns at all.  The problem in Mexico is corruption.  They are on their way to becoming a failed state, which is why the violence there spreads across the border — and why it’s all the more important for us to secure our side of it.

Yeah, let’s face it guys. It’s time to annex Mexico. We have 2 choices now. Annex it, kill a bunch of criminals, spend a bunch of cash and turn it into a paradise or do nothing and let it devolve into Gaza. We aren’t going to close the border and all that will ever do is allow any half way decent person to run away and cause the problem to get worse.

Annex Mexico, clean it up and put it on a 50 year path toward statehood.

Mexico is already a failed state, and that the federal government has not secured and armed the border is a constitutional crisis so severe – that should have the border states thinking of leaving the union and doing it themselves.

Cindy Munford on July 26, 2010 at 11:12 AM

Sorry, Ed. The problem is corruption, fueled by cartel drug money which is created in turn by the U.S. appetite for illegal drugs. We seem unable to face the fact that we are responsible for creating wealth for the cartels. And, no, just making drugs legal won’t fix it now. Is there an answer? No, I don’t think so. We seem unwilling or unable to curb our appetites. Colombia fixed their problem, in large part, by using hit squads on crucial players to eliminate Escobar’s reign, so the problem shifted to Mexico. It is a supply and demand problem. Until demand is reduced, the problem will continue.

As long as demand for illegal drugs remains high in the U.S., a new mexican government will be easily and quickly corrupted. The root of the cartels’ power exists here. Mexico has always had a corruption problem, but not the wads of cash to completely exploit that tendency, till now. Any governmental institutions are completely rotted and will remain that way as long as large amounts of money are available to the cartels. The cartels will eventually run the government, with complete legal access to military ordnance and the judicial system. U.S. citizens don’t want to accept the fact they are responsible for funding it and change their ways. This will continue to be a festering sore.

I’ve been saying it for a few years, now: the next major deployment of US troops will be on our southern border.

If we cannot support our own sovereignty with the civil means of fences and walls, then what comes after that is less than thrilling, less than lovely and completely blamed upon those unwilling to enforce the laws of the land. We were lied to with the Amnesty under Reagan, and we still have some of those fossils sitting in the House and Senate. Enforcing laws work… I prefer civil means, but I am never without doubt that the civil sword must be bloodied to come to just defense of this Nation.

Over the past few years, I have had the, er, learning experience of traveling to a Central American country a number of times. The corruption is so endemic, I do not think the average citizen of that country even realizes how corrupt their culture is. Does a fish know it’s in water? Honestly, when I hear “corruption” bandied about in that country, I assume the problem is that he wasn’t offered a big enough bribe. That’s just the way business was, is, and always shall be.

The people are nice. I enjoy their company. I like the food. I hope for the best for them. But having seen a bit of that culture up close, I have a bit of concern that we have let vast numbers of people from that culture into our country.

borntoraisehogs on July 26, 2010 at 10:58 AM

But they’ll never have their civil war. They, unlike most failed countries, have a “pressure valve” called the United States. They are able to export their social problems (in the form of millions of poor & unempoloyed) here while at the same time blaming the U.S. for their continued problems at home.

This is why I never understand the “compassion” argument for illegal immigration. Sure, allowing it may help out the relatively small percentage of Mexicans who come here, but it also allows the corrupt and falied Mexican government to continue being corrupt and failed without any social reprecussions.

Also the GOP candidate is a open borders person. From LA Times

It doesn’t take much to get John and Ken into a swivet — the radio duo’s fan base was built on indignation — but this week Meg Whitman offered them more than enough with which to work.

Outraged over Whitman’s new, more liberal tone on immigration, they filled the airwaves — and they have plenty to fill, with five hours on KFI every workday — with broadsides at the Republican nominee for governor. They mocked her statements as “garbage,” read aloud their correspondence with a campaign aide they labeled a “weasel” and recounted old interviews to show her change in emphasis. They used the station’s website to scream “Stop the Pandering” and urge listeners to barrage Whitman’s campaign with phone calls and her Facebook page with criticisms.

By the end of the week, the voicemail attached to the number they had supplied was too full to accept any more calls, and Whitman’s Facebook page was awash in supportive sentiments like “Here’s a note for ya, Meg… Go away! Go run for Governor of Mexico!”

Hell, it turns out, hath no fury like radio hosts scorned.

Mexico likes to blame its gun violence on the US, and gun-control advocates love to repeat the canard that 90% the weapons in Mexico come from the US. (It’s actually less than 20%; more of them come from Mexican Army deserters.)

Perhaps that is the problem.

Historically the law abiding citizens of Mexico are the helpless victim of the lawless gangs and corrupt officials, subject to kidnapping and extortion, murder and fear of their life and family. They have no way of telling those who feed on their helplessness, no! They have no way of defending themselves if they do.

It has been shown time and again that when citizens are unarmed, criminals have nothing to fear and crime goes up. When citizens are allowed to carry, are trained to use their guns and do so, crime goes down.

Perhaps the problem is that Mexican citizens are not armed to protect themselves, or others. Crime is going up and nothing stands in the way of the criminals doing what ever they want with their helpless populations.

How would that change if citizens were allowed to arm and carry and have protection if they use their guns in defense? Sending more guns to Mexico might be the answer. As it is, only the criminals, the ones that don’t care who they shoot, have the guns.

Franklyn on July 26, 2010 at 1:17 PM

Look at the story behind Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter. Mexico has to have the USA Special Forces invade, because the CINC has been kidnapped, thanks due to their increasing lawlessness.

As for ‘annexing’ Mexico, that’s a really stupid idea. Yeah, just what we need: a country filled with violent offenders and uneducated migrant workers that will take advantage of being an appendage of the US to legally flood across the borders. What we have to do is seal that border with armed men, all empowered with the power to shoot to kill any invaders, and anyone that fires at them, no matter how far across into Mexico they have to return fire. This would, in fact, provide a boost to national employment figures across states like New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and California as securing the border will require vastly expanded state, county and city police forces (meaning more hiring), as well as the possible inclusion of private security/military forces, like Xe Services LLC (Blackwater). Mexico is not only exporting economy-draining criminals masquerading as workers, but they’re also flat-out expanding violent criminals that wear no mask, other than the ones designed to hide their identities from the people they victimize as they come across the border. Building a massive, Great Wall of China would be nice, but that’s going to take too long. A combination of law enforcement, sheriffs’ department posse forces and private military and security force contractors would be much faster. I’m not saying it would be cheap, but it would be much faster, and probably much more efficient. Also, anyone captured on this side of the border would face prosecution for at least a class-b felony and long term imprisonment at hard labor (maybe they could build the wall). States know they can’t rely on the federal government (i.e.: DHS) for help, so they would have to use their vastly expanded law enforcement organizations and private security contractors to form a large, cohesive, interstate network to provide criminal intelligence aiding in capturing illegal aliens, their families and those that harbor them.

Tantor on July 26, 2010 at 1:56 PM

The problem in Mexico is corruption. They are on their way to becoming a failed state, which is why the violence there spreads across the border — and why it’s all the more important for us to secure our side of it.

That statement is dead-nuts-right-on. But for the love of all that is good and decent, could we please stop abusing the word violence?

What’s happening across the border is lawlessness and anarchy; and should be identified as such. If all violence is bad, then we should abolish sports, action movies, video games, self defence, etc. This is one area in which we have allowed the dominant elitists culture (journalists and politicians) to corrupt our terminology. They are trying to condition us to the premise that all violence is bad. And it just so happens that self defence against a physical attack is itself, violent. And I refuse to allow them to define self defence as wrong.

oops…got off topic. Those last several lines had nothing to do with story-line.

You guys are all racists. This is all George Bush’s fault.

manwithblackhat on July 26, 2010 at 2:24 PM

The Republicans under Bush refused to seal the border. Out goes the Republicans, in comes demonrats. The demonrats under Obuma refuse to seal the border. Out goes the demonrats, in comes the Republicans. The beat goes on.

The problem in Mexico is corruption.

The problem is not the corruption but the culture. I’m afraid that is the ugly truth. Until Mexico changes its educational system so that the majority of its citizens finish highschool this will continue.

Theworldisnotenough on July 26, 2010 at 3:58 PM

Yeah, let’s face it guys. It’s time to annex Mexico. We have 2 choices now. Annex Occupy it, kill a bunch of criminals, spend a bunch of cash and turn it into a paradise or do nothing and let it devolve into Gaza. We aren’t going to close the border and all that will ever do is allow any half way decent person to run away and cause the problem to get worse.

We need to do the colonial thing right, but not allow them free access to are lands until they are indistinguishable from us.

Slowburn on July 26, 2010 at 3:58 PM

Bring back the French Foreign Legion, let them get a little revenge for Camerone.

In the meantime, open our own southern border wide and let the flood of people through, that will keep the world from calling us racist.

I really wish France had the balls to go on a Colonial/Imperialist march…

I agree with your comment that Mexico is on the verge of becoming a failed state. The problem is corruption at all levels in Mexico. A big part of the problem is the apathy of the people to accept it as “oh well, that’s the way it is”.

LurP on July 26, 2010 at 6:11 PM

And yet the Left is more concerned with helping bring Mexicans Here that helping Mexicans There

This is ALL Arizona’s fault, and that dang law they passed. *rolls eyes*

Now what say you, Eric Holder? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

capejasmine on July 26, 2010 at 7:36 PM

It is a supply and demand problem. Until demand is reduced, the problem will continue.

I hope you sleep well at night knowing that the drug cartels have diversified.

According to Borderland Beat:
Not even the Government is saved. Several Mayors are slapped by drug traffickers, senior state officials are stripped of their showy vehicles, federal employees unable to accomplish their tasks.

They charge for the electricity, the water and the farms. They became public service providers Pemex has oil stolen and sold back to them.

It’s not only about the drugs anymore. I’m trying to find the story of the losses from farmers and ranchers, too.

LurP on July 26, 2010 at 6:11 PM

1. Drug cartels would leave the people alone. They only killed other people involved in their same business.

2. Family.

Unfortunately they believe that making a deal with the devil (the three cartels that united to get rid of the Zetas) will take them back to peace.

meMC on July 26, 2010 at 8:56 PM

That is what corruption creates. Think about it when it comes time to choose between a strongly suspected corrupt politician and even a slightly kooky Tea Partier. The more we tolerate corruption the more the results will emulate Mexico or even Venezuela or Cuba.
