Audio: Boxer compares serving in Congress to serving in the military?

posted at 5:51 pm on July 26, 2010 by Allahpundit

That’s not quite what she’s saying, I think, but after years of her barfing up obnoxious soundbites, I can’t blame anyone for not wanting to give her the benefit of the doubt.

“Barbara Boxer’s disrespectful comments underscore just how out of touch she has become after her 28 years in Washington,“ Veterans for Carly Coalition Co-Chairman Lt. Commander Paul Chabot said in a press release, in response to Boxer’s comments. “Equating the experiences of members of Congress with those of brave soldiers who have fought to defend our country is just the latest example in a failed career marked by disrespect for our men and women in uniform.”…

When asked for comment, Boxer’s campaign manager, Rose Kapolczynski, responded, “Regardless of what she says now, Fiorina has to face the fact that when she was CEO of [Hewlett-Packard], HP equipment was sold to Iran, a state sponsor of terror, contrary to U.S. law.”…

This is not the first time, however, that Boxer has made comments or taken actions that were considered offensive to those serving in the military. Remember, for instance, Sen. Boxer’s over-the-top rebuke of an Army brigadier general last year when he referred to her as “ma’am” during a committee hearing?

Indeed we do. Who could have guessed that Barbara Boxer was an egomaniac? As for the clip, her comparison isn’t merely between serving in Congress and in the military; she mentions cops and firefighters too, which I think is her clumsy way of saying that public servants in high-pressure jobs of whatever stripe forge a certain camaraderie to cope with the stress. Fair enough, I guess, although it takes a singularly tone-deaf politician to lump her own profession in with those that risk death daily in the interest of saving lives, especially given the mood among voters at this particular moment. Just four days ago, Gallup put out a survey assessing public respect for various American institutions. Go compare the very top of the list to the very bottom. Great work, ma’am.

I am at a loss for words on this one. My husband is an OIF veteran and she does not even have a clue of what she speaks. Veterans and police/firemen often go through actual traumatic events. The most traumatic thing she’s ever gone through is belonging to the democratic party and that is entirely self inflicted.

So I guess that’s what she thinks also justifies her ugly remark to a high ranking officer like a Brigadier General. Those two positions cannot be compared to on any level field. If she see’s her seat in congress as something to be honored like that of our fighting men and women, then she has delusions of grandeur.

BobMbx on July 26, 2010 at 5:56 PM

GFY.

Corporal is a rank that has to be earned. Corporals are NCOs who are in charge of other troops, gear, fire teams, squads, are ground vehicle crew chiefs and commanders, and are air crew chiefs. I don’t know what your job is, but I’m guessing I ran more as a corporal than you do on a day to day basis.

Even the lowly rank of private has to be earned by completing boot camp and having some degree of proficiency at one’s MOS.

She rates neither, and neither does anyone else who rags on troops of any rank.

Jenfidel on July 26, 2010 at 6:16 PM

You’re quite welcome.

The NCO ranks aren’t very appreciated. Sergeant has a nice Hollywood ring to it (especially since the Army calls everybody sergeant even if they’re higher ranking), but Corporals, who do the same amount of heavy lifting (or more, depending on how an individual MOS promotes) don’t get crap for recognition.

Being the first rank of NCO in the US military, it’s the break where a soldier, sailor, or Marine is given a hefty amount of authority and responsibility. While it’s MOS dependant, in my MOS, I was in charge of up to 22 troops (sometimes that outranked me, but my billet outranked them) and about $3 million in vehicle & equipment. Motor T Corporal bubbas are put in charge of vehicles and cargo, plus convoys; APC/IFV/AAV Corporals are put in charge of not only vehicles but vehicle sections; infantry corporals are put in charge of not just fire teams but also squads; air crew corporals are in charge of making sure the bird flies, naval PO3s are what makes the ships run to begin with.

Jenfidel, I don’t know what your dad’s MOS was, but regardless of the job, there can be a heavy burden of responsibility for somebody who not only has the authorities of an NCO, but is expected to act as liason to the troops – as he just was one. It’s also the rank of a lot of guys who do one enlistment and get out – representing the one-term soldier/Marine (or PO3 for sailors).

CPL 310 on July 26, 2010 at 6:33 PM

I was only 10 when he died…and my mother wasn’t the best about details, but he was a clerk in the office of General Roderick Allen (I think) in Berlin, and had been in combat before that under Patton.

Or scrounge through the cushions of her couch to see if she could get up some gas money to go to work.

Or wear threadbare clothes because it’s more important to pay the rent?

Until she’s in that position, she wouldn’t understand. And that is what the vast majority of Americans are pissed off about. Because the vast majority of us have been through the experiences I just listed while members of Congress either haven’t, or haven’t in so long they forget what it’s like.

As long as you stand by your statement, I stand by mine. You’re free to correct yourself – I think I made that clear, and if not, I am here.

I doubt I’d be surprised, whether you’re a griping PFC, an ironic hipster Cpl who doesn’t think much of his peers (or who’s griping about low cutting scores), a haughty 30 year SgtMaj who doesn’t think his NCOs are worth crap, or any level of officer who thinks the same.

Given your first response is “I’ll be watching you” and “I’ve got bonafides” rather than “yeah, my bad, that’s a dumb thing to say”, I can’t say that your creds will matter any more than if you were calling Michelle Obama a “w–kie” and then said “well I have a black friend so it’s okay!”

Nails! Pleasure to read you posts. My Dad was a Cpl. in WWII and I was also before I made E5.

Cripes, If I had only known! I would have skipped all that working from Private to LTC… all that time overseas, getting shot at, etc… and all I had to do was enter the halls of Congress to be the same?!

Thanks Senator!

Dude, you completely lost me now. What in Gods name are you trying to prove to this guy? Look, I am certain he meant no specific offense. Why are we taking this to another level? What would you say if one of our commisioned officers who comments here took offense to you calling LTs.. butterbars. That’s disrespectful too. God, just stand down troop.

I’ve held off comment since this headline first appeared.

I just can’t serve up my hide to Allah that easily.

Butterbars only get disrespect because they have the extremely unenviable position of being put in charge of something they have no idea how to run. Most of them know to listen, learn, and then they begin to lead.

During my enlistment it was easy to identify the rank of the pilot based on his attitude. The most arrogant officer rank I found was the Major. Pilots start out humble, become arrogant, and then respectful in their career.

My squadron may have even ground aborted a Major three times, on the same flight, until he got the hint that his attitude was not appreciated among the enlisted ranks (including the E-9 who suggested the plan). We let him go up in the 4th jet he had to climb into.

That never really happened of course. ;)

I will be glad when the Mexicans take Califa back.

“Boxer compares serving in Congress to serving in the military.”

Does that mean she wants to be called “Sir” instead of “Ma’am”?

Whoopsie!

I do believe that’s a political faux pas.
