Never let an oil spill go to waste – create a new government agency!

posted at 10:52 am on July 25, 2010 by Laura Curtis

Obama isn’t letting the oil spill go to waste. Dissatisfied with how his repeated attempts at job killing drilling moratoriums are being smacked down in court, he’s recycled his coal plant bankruptcy plan and broadcast his intent to drown drillers in regulation. He’s also using it to promote his shiny new National Ocean Council.

Clearly, a “coordinated Federal effort, proactively guided by a senior-level interagency body” will finally protect us from oil spills, overfishing, pollution, coastal development and the impacts of climate change. And reorganizing a lot of smaller agencies and departments under one big one is a great idea. It’s worked out so well at the Department of Homeland Security!

After all, what can’t government agencies do? (Besides basic functions like building adequate levees, securing the border, providing safe health care to veterans, and getting oil skimmers into the Gulf in a timely fashion.)

If you drill, fish, live on the coast or enjoy boating, the National Ocean Council is going to regulate you because this new government agency will essentially rezone our coasts to achieve these goals:

“Coastal and marine spatial planning identifies areas most suitable for various types or classes of activities in order to reduce conflicts among uses, reduce environmental impacts, facilitate compatible uses, and preserve critical ecosystem services to meet economic, environmental, security, and social objectives.”

In fact, even if you don’t drill, fish, live on the coast or enjoy boating, the National Ocean Council will regulate you: “Concerns about water quality would be addressed by promoting and implementing sustainable practices on land.”

Who’s going to lead and guide us in implementing those sustainable practices? The National Ocean Council will be co-chaired by Obama’s science advisor, John Holdren. If his name sounds familiar, perhaps you remember it from the 1970s, when he co-wrote a book called Ecoscience which suggested compulsory abortion, mass sterilization, and a transnational “Planetary Regime” as solutions for the catastrophic overpopulation problem that absolutely, positively needed to be resolved by the year 2000, (that never happened.) He and his co-authors have walked that back somewhat, though Holdren has never unambiguously disavowed the book.

The formation of this new Council is a signal that offshore drilling will likely be regulated into nonexistence. The Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission will also participate in the National Ocean Council. The Council is also specifically tasked to cede our maritime sovereignty to the United Nations via the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea; if this is ratified, the International Seabed Authority will be able to restrict or limit our access to undersea “solid, liquid or gaseous mineral resources” if it so chooses.

Obama sees skyrocketing energy costs as a feature, not a bug, of his energy policies. If you recall he even said so before the election. He does not have the support of all Democrats. Mary Landrieu is fighting against the unnecessary and costly moratorium which is fueling the perfect economic storm Obama is inflicting on Louisiana. As she pointed out, this will cost us tens of thousands of jobs, and actually expose us to more environmental risks.

Unfortunately, because he can use Executive Orders and other methods to bypass Congress, he doesn’t need the support of all Democrats. If this Council achieves the goals set for it, Democrats can avoid those pesky Congressional battles to eradicate drilling, an environmental goal near and dear to liberal hearts. They can just use national and international regulations to drive drillers to less restrictive nations like Venezuela, to which American taxpayers just lent billions of dollars for offshore drilling. Two deepwater rigs down and 31 to go!

Only the ignorant ignore the fact that oil & natural gas is used as the raw material to make just about everything invent in the 20th Century.

Next step is to outlaw hydraulic fraccing of wells. Thus hang it up on thinking that the HUGE reserves recently discovered in deepwater GoM are going to be easily replaced by shale production, or ANY production. Fraccing is used for 84% of the wells drilled and is also used in reworking old wells and allowing them to continue to flow.

Guess who has made an investment into LNG terminals along the Gulf Coast, Cheniere Energy which is partially owned by Arab investors.

Huh, it would seem that our Federal Government already has enough agencies to protect the oceans. All that needs to be done is get them to do their jobs…efficiently.
We hear from a Congressman during the hearings that he talked to 3 different oil companies and they didn’t like BP’s well design. Didn’t the MMS see these superior plans from the other companies? They are all out in the Gulf too.
Why would the MSS rubber stamp BP’s plans without raising concern?
Why even have the MMS or any other government agency that is to be the final say in what gets done if there is no true oversight?

Coast Guard officials grasped the potential threat of a catastrophic spill within hours of the explosion on board the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, estimating that 8,000 barrels a day of crude oil could possibly gush out of the well in the event of a complete blowout, according to Coast Guard logs.

Over the first three days of the crisis — long before the public heard of a leak — the minimum estimate for a total well blowout ballooned eight-fold and

(the president was warned by his top aides that a major spill larger than the 1989 Exxon Valdez might be coming, according to the documents and interviews.)

To the best of my knowledge, Nature and the Earth itself have done a rather nice job of maintaining these exact things for like maybe a billion years or more with no problem whatsoever.

Whose fault is that?
Yet the only solution they see is more government.

Never let an oil spill go to waste – create a new government agency!

We’re forgetting that this President is not acting or maintaining the responsibilities of his office. Instead, we have a community organizer who governs by committee, (commissions, Czars, and executive order appointments and agencies), designed to deflect power and responsiblity from his office and (at the same time), decimate the constitutional powers of the United States Congress.

The man is systematically destroying over two hundred years of our executive and legislative process while shredding the state’s rights. A couple of more liberal Supreme Court appointments and he will make Bush’s “mission accomplished” pale in comparison to the lost liberties and government intrusion into our daily lives.

Meanwhile, (with small exceptions like Laura Curtis here),a complicit media stands shoulder to shoulder defending this insanity.

Why Did the Obama Admin Exempt the Deepwater Horizon From Environmental Impact Study?

It somehow boggles the mind, doesn’t it? But you’re reading the title correctly. BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig was exempted from having an detailed environmental impact study done by the Department of Interior last year. The Washington Post looked at federal documents and found that the department’s Mineral Management Service have the project a “categorical exclusion” from review, something which BP had been lobbying for more broadly just prior to the explosion that kicked of this series of tragic events.

What does anyone expect from a “community organizer?”

No responsibility…just another commission/committee to expand the reach of government. Would someone please take the time to detail what Obama “accomplished” in Chicago as a “community organizer?”

Extrapolate Obama’s “accomplishments” in Chicago to the rest of the Nation.

America was warned, long before November 2008, but the darlings and dimwits of the MSM would hear none of it nor allow anyone else to even discuss it…too racist, you know.

Every problem that has appeared on Obama’s watch is either “solved” by blaming Bush or by forming a new bureaucratic agency or commission, or committee, or taking out a huge loan. Nothing gets solved, but there is a lot of expense of energy, dollars, and the lives and livelihoods of American people. In other words…it looks like frenetic activity, but none of it accomplishes a darn thing. This is how Obama was able to charm the folks in Chicago.

The hallmark of a good Totalitarian is the love for the bureaucracy, and these Democrats cannot get enough of it. A bureaucrat becomes a faithful ideologue who implements the dogma from above, like a priest. He or she can become detached from the decisions that are made because of the insulated nature of this or that agency. This is why the creation of “death panels”, how those us describe them who see through the bureaucracy, are going to be so dangerous. The more bureaucracies there are, the more control the State has over our lives. God help us.

Mary has no clout at all in DC, other than getting her little brother elected as Mayor of New Orleans. All of those morons who thought by re-electing her she was going to keep moderation in DC fell for nothing more than a normal campaign ruse. She’s not going to work with Vitter. They genuinely dislike each other – not just as a partisan thing, but real personal dislike. They often snipe at each other like schoolchildren, each trying to take credit for something the La delegation got done and basically accusing the other one of having pants on fire. Still, it’s in her best interest to get the drilling back up and running, and she knows it.
