Sherrod: Breitbart wants to take us back to the days of slavery
posted at 5:17 pm on July 23, 2010 by Allahpundit
Via Dan Riehl, I can see that she’s going to do a bang-up job in that new racial-healing position that Vilsack’s lined up for her. Whether this is her lashing out in anger after having been treated unfairly or whether she really believes something this insane about Breitbart, only she knows, but it’s telling that Cooper doesn’t challenge it. One of the lessons of this week, supposedly, is that we should beware of caricatures in racial matters, not only because people are more complicated in practice but because the fallout from misjudgment is culturally poisonous. See, e.g., the initial clip of Sherrod versus her full NAACP speech. But here she is pushing a caricature of her own — with no evidence to support a charge this incendiary — and Cooper the journalist lets it slide, presumably because he’s squeamish about siding with Breitbart against someone who, to his audience, is a sympathetic victim. What a perfectly depressing note on which to end a depressing week.

he does ? by unearthing filth that settled in the department of agriculture and elsewhere in government ? how dare he ! doesn’t he realize that an army of sherrods will lose their perpetual jobs and will have to find real, performance based work ?! ? if that is not slavery I don’t know what is !

I still think it was right to fire her, and I still consider her a racist after watching the entire video.
A race-baiter at the very least.

Millions are out of a job, no housing, no food, the gulf, the country is going to hell…and what’s on the news, all over, 24 hours a day?
What a country and what a shame!

No, it was fake. The video itself didn’t show racism. She may be one, but that video was not proof of it anymore than Rather’s memogate was proof of Bush’s wrongdoing.
Esthier on July 23, 2010 at 5:53 PM
After making Breitbart’s case last night, I think Ms. Sherrod may well be “encouraged” by the WH, et.al., to STFU.
On the other hand, she may well refuse to be quieted. In which case, pass the Orville Redenbacher’s.

It didn’t make her out to be racist at all. It made her out to be a martyr for that ballyhooed post-racial era we’re supposed to be in. Obviously she’s not the same woman who argued on the video that our shared problems transcend race. That’s a shame, that’s all.
RightOFLeft on July 23, 2010 at 5:55 PM
Maybe I’m stating the obvious, but it feels like this was all done from within the NAACP. They baited, he bit.
Bring on the lawsuit. It might be very revealing.
CTSherman on July 23, 2010 at 5:57 PM
The whole thing was just swell.
First there was a report on the evils of the way Breitbart goes about his work, and CNN used Media Matters as the source. Yes, Media Matters assured the reporter, Brietbart is really unethical and awful.
Then it was on to Mrs. Sherrod’s wild accusations.

She was speaking in the present tense when she said the white farmer she didn’t help was acting all superior to her.
She smirked when the NAACP crowd cheered her saying how she screwed over the white farmer.
She stated on the full tape that it was STILL about black and white.
She tarred everyone who opposed Obama as racist for doing so.
If these things don’t show her to be a racist then what has she said recently to suggest she is a racist?

We ALL want to go back to the days of slavery. Go on, admit it! Being ideologically conservative as regards your philosophy of government is absolutely equivalent to wanting to go back to the days of slavery. Opposing ANY wealth redistribution by government makes you worse than HITLER! That’s right, there’s no use trying to hide or disguise ourselves any more. We gave it our best shot, but to no avail. They figured us out. People like Shirley Sherrod are more than a match for us, we may as well just give up and surrender.
Wow, I feel much better after venting all that sarcastic absurdity. Have a good weekend all!

BO and Vilsack are the ones who really screwed up here. Vilsack should have known better after the Pigford case, but he’s a tool
No one should be dismissed in the manner Sherrod was. There are procedures, and all of this could have been handled quietly by the administration.
The most disturbing result from this to my mind is the panicky, knee-jerk reaction by the WH that occurs all too often. I have no confidence in their ability to handle any situation.
Sherrod is a product of the Dem party, the NAACP, white liberal guilt and personal greed. She benefited in the past from being a professional victim, and she thinks it will work this time. The best part for Shirley is that if she’s right, she gets the whole pie this time as well as few minutes of fame.
She’s a race grifter. Will her antics pay off this time around? I don’t know. A couple of decades ago whites fell all over themselves to make amends, and conservatives were as pathetic and patronizing as white liberals. They treated African Americans like pets they abused in a fit of anger even though most never engaged in racist activities. They stripped black Americans of their dignity once again, but the Dems were the worst. They turned their pets into perpetual voters for a stinking welfare check.
I don’t know if Shirley’s ploy will be a winning one. She’s behaving in a rather Pavlovian manner. I’m not so sure the public will bite, but then again, it’s Zippy’s decision in the end. Sherrod is artless and obvious as is the Precident. It will be interesting to see how he responds to being beotch slapped. If he caves, as he surely will, I guess I’ll build a bunker because A’Jad and the rest of the world will have their opinion of President Panty Waist confirmed.

Bashing Breitbart: CNN’s Anderson Cooper Admonishes Conservative ‘Weasel’ and ‘Bully’By Alex Fitzsimmons (Bio | Archive)
Thu, 07/22/2010 – 15:16 ET
An indignant Anderson Cooper railed against Andrew Breitbart with an uncharacteristic angry commentary at the top of his eponymous CNN program yesterday, calling the conservative activist a “bully,” likening him to a “weasel,” and accusing him of posting a video which was “clearly edited to deceive and slander [Shirley] Sherrod.”

You mean like this?
You know, I haven’t seen such a mean-spirited people as I’ve seen lately over this issue of health care. Some of the racism we thought was buried. Didn’t it surface? Now, we endured eight years of the Bush’s and we didn’t do the stuff these Republicans are doing because you have a black President.
sharrukin on July 23, 2010 at 6:12 PM
This is racist? That a white farmer was acting superior to her, a farmer she later befriended and helped save his farm?
She didn’t screw over the white farmer. She did help him. But she could have done more. That’s her big crime. That she didn’t give 100%.
How many workers do? Considering many employers have not had to hire anyone back, instead getting more out of the workers they still have, it’s obvious plenty don’t.
Yes, she admitted that her reasons were because the man is white, but at that point, your argument against her is the same as the one in favor of hate crime laws.
At a NAACP event. I’m sure that one’s a real shocker. Of course it’s possible that what she meant was that racism still exists, or that racial inequality still exists. The entire context of her 45 minute speech certainly would suggest that.
And that proves racism how exactly? Plenty of white people have done the same.
I’m not arguing that she is one, so I don’t see why the onus is on me to explain that. She might be one, but she hasn’t actually said anything racist yet. She’s doing exactly what she’s mad at Breitbart for doing, and for that, she’s beyond a hypocrite, but I have no proof she’s a racist.
Esthier on July 23, 2010 at 6:13 PM

You know what would be fun ?
Hannity asking Juan Williams ” Juan , do you think Breitbart wants to take us back to the days of slavery ?”
His answer will shed light on what the latest dictat from the WH is for the weekend.
And if Hannity asks that same question to KP ,
her answer will be a supermega soundbite ….
macncheez on July 23, 2010 at 6:15 PM
Now that’s inaccurate. The crowd never cheered during the story. They laughed when she told them she was thinking about how much she was going to help the white farmer, but there wasn’t much noise at all when she said she didn’t do all she could have done.
Don’t exaggerate. This story doesn’t need exaggeration. It doesn’t help one bit.
Dusty on July 23, 2010 at 6:15 PM
The “proof” of racism was fake. The video itself wasn’t.
Esthier on July 23, 2010 at 6:16 PM
This woman has seething resentments against white people and is steeped in self-victimization. To think she transcended her racism is absurd.

franksalterego on July 23, 2010 at 6:17 PM
Simply put I suspect that if the person who said these things was white that you wouldn’t have any doubt as to their racism.
The soft bigotry of low expectations.
sharrukin on July 23, 2010 at 6:18 PM
Personally, I don’t think it makes her out to entirely be a racist, but all the same I’m not surprised she questions whether or not she belongs in a position for which the chief aim is to see all with equal treatment before the law. It doesn’t sound like building bridges was ever her strong suit.
I was disgusted by her body language in the video, regardless of context: The last thing I expected her to do was to smile, laugh and roll her eyes.

You suspect that because you don’t know me and probably because you didn’t watch the whole video. Feel free to search my name on this site when this story first broke. I was completely against her until I saw the full video.
Now, I still don’t feel sorry for her and think she’s making a mistake in speaking out like this, but I just don’t see proof of racism. And as a conservative, I’m sensitive to the card being pulled out so quickly. You should be too.
Esthier on July 23, 2010 at 6:22 PM
Regardless whether she thinks her speech was redemptive, the tone of her words when referring to caucasians as “their kind” and her concession toward having to help “whites” strikes me as highly racist. Not the type of person that should be representing all Americans at the USDA….
IntheNet on July 23, 2010 at 6:22 PM
What PROOF do you need? She stood and told her tail, though twenty four years ago, about discriminating against a white farmer. She stood silent as the audience cheered her discrimination. Her own words now tell you that the racism she held in her heart back then is still with her today.
Think of it in the reverse~what if she was a WHITE woman?

CWforFreedom on July 23, 2010 at 6:30 PM
And for the record, a good friend of mine had a similar experience as this woman. Like Sherrod, she was a victim. Though instead of her father being attacked and not punished, she was. She was raped by black men who were not punished.
For some time after, she was undeniably racist and unapologetically so. It took her time to heal, and she’s since renounced those ways.
If she had told her story to a group of white people, it could easily have been taken out of context the way this one was, and I would most certainly defend her.

Hornet, you know me, so please don’t act like the others here who don’t.
I’ve answered your questions in other posts. If it was a white woman, I doubt she’d be given the benefit of doubt from others, but she’d still get it from me if the context cleared her like it did Sherrod.
Esthier on July 23, 2010 at 6:33 PM
Um, I disagree, and I’m not sure I can articulate it appropriately, but I’ll try.
I think a lot of folks who piled onto Breitbart when the left started to hit back and say “He took her words out of context,” have massive amounts o’ egg on they collective faces…and they know it with every syllable that comes out of Our Girl Shirl’s mouth.
If just one of them starts thinking, “Um, gee, maybe there is something fishy here (mixing metaphors, sorry), then that is one more person that is seeing the inequity in the whole race-baiting laser tag thyngy.
I believe it will become increasingly clear–as the left whines, moans and rends their clothing over the fact that AB practiced “Gotcha journalism,”–that he was not targeting Ms. Sherrod personally. He was simply illustrating the inherent racism that exists against whites among some in the African American community…not all.
It simply behooves the NAACP to encourage the whole victomology (is that a word? Im refudiated on it.)meme. The message from the NAAPC and the left is: “No, we don’t want individuals to have power, do we? ”
Perhaps this is going to seem a non-sequitor, but does anyone find it odd that that old chant, “We shall overcome” seems to be replaced by a rant, “We want to be elevated?” Guess that makes me racist.
Individual responsibility for one’s destiny: that is the ideal that truly frees people.
Ole’ Shirls obviously expresses her feeling that po’ folk can’t provide their own leg up, but need to be dependant on the gub’ment.

1) Whatever else comes of this, Sherrod has used up all the sympathy I did, in fact, have for her at the end of the first day. If she had played the reconciliation card, she could be a national hero right now, despite her bigotry and really poor grasp of economics. But by being “just another cog in the conflict machine,” she’s no different from Sharpton or Rangel now.
2) Nice to see the Circular Firing Squad is still not out of ammo.
Merovign on July 23, 2010 at 6:49 PM
I’m so entirely sick of statements like this from people on the Left. It’s so incendiary and despicable and ridiculous.
These people (and I mean liberals, not black people) are poisoning our society.
CP on July 23, 2010 at 6:51 PM
Hornet, the full context has her admitting she was wrong when she was admittedly racist to the guy. They weren’t cheering for her racism. They did though agree with her when she admonished herself in her speech.
Out of context, everything she said is completely racist. In that situation, even in context, she was racist. But she corrected herself within months and told that lesson to a group who really needed to hear it.
You believe the NAACP is racist? I probably agree. And that’s why this story was so important for them to hear, to hear that racism isn’t acceptable from anyone for any reason and that even in an organization like the NAACP, it would be helpful to include people of all colors.
I’d stay and talk more, but I can’t. I hope you understand me better now, but if you don’t, please talk to me. You know where to find me.

The freedom hating democrats in Washington DC just passed a financial reform bill that will dramatically affect every single one of our lives in a negative way.

Inanemergencydial on July 23, 2010 at 6:56 PM
She’s sure living up to that image of a “redeemed” ex-racist isn’t she?
Breitbart was right and every limp-wristed mealy-mouthed righty who backed away him owes him an apology.
We have to stop running from truth as soon as the Liberal Hit Squad starts operating.
The tape DID show the woman as a racist because it showed her:
- twice accusing the white farmer of being a racist (thought he was superior to me)
- referring to the white lawyer as one of their “kind”
- never apologizing or admitting she’s wrong for those characterizations
- labeling the GOP, the Tea Party and Fox News as racists
She has shown no inclination to forgive and move on – instead she’s looking to better herself at the expense of people she disagrees with AND by throwing gasoline on this little firestorm of racial politics.
Breitbart was right.

Furthermore, as I commented elsewhere on day 1, this discussion isn’t happening unless a) the NAACP puts out a statement calling elements of the tea party racist or b) she doesn’t have a pointless job in a pointless department to use as a platform for espousing her political beliefs.
Apparently she handed out loans. I thought banks took care of this. So sick of the federal government. So very, very sick of it.
pc on July 23, 2010 at 7:21 PM
She also said Breitbart’s audience was “racist conservatives”. That’s a pretty broad statement, and I’m sick of it.
silvernana on July 23, 2010 at 7:22 PM
Oh and the best part of this and the part that proves the fix is in, is the fact she got a job, a great job in a department of the federal government she successfully sued. Yeah, sure, that happens every day in the private sector. I remember my granddad telling me how he was made manager at the Piggly Wiggly after suing the pants of the store for leaving too much wax on the floor causing him to slip and fall.
pc on July 23, 2010 at 7:24 PM
If there was any doubt that the woman was a racist, she has erased it with how she has responded to all of this.
Instead of providing real evidence of a “redeemed” ex-racist…
…she is show real evidence that she sees the world through racist glasses – everything is black and white.
Religious_Zealot on July 23, 2010 at 7:25 PM
And to further demonstrate how the only truly free Americans are the special class of American, Sherrod get’s to speak publicly counseling her audience on the virtues of employment with the federal government as a minority – freedom from thw worry of making a profit, threat of firing or being laid off, freedom to speak freely, freedom to live a life of security with the promise of fully insured health for life and an unrealistically rich lifetime pension.
The ruling class has a good thing going.

Some pretty damming words by the little lady. It’s the same if you bother to listen to the entire recording. That being said as usual it’s being ignored by the MSM. They are still running with poor little innocent Shirley evil Breitbart, “doctored” tape meme.

I’ve asked this here before and I’ll ask again: in whose eyes that matter did Breitbart lose credibility with?
You started a fun game I’d like to continue! Anyone who believes Breitbart has lost some credibility because of his participation in this story has lost some credibility. Fair enough, right? :)

This is growing tiresome. Racist, not racist, and now back to racist. She just lost all of the sympathy she was getting. She just couldn’t keep her true colors hidden.

It appears her speech was not taken out of context after all and that she still holds racist views and values.

Barry is the son of a natural born African man, a man who wouldn’t spare a minute of his time associating with American pickers. Obama is the descendant the African continent’s ruling class, the traders and expungers of the weak, the ones who rounded up the weak and sent them packing onto slave ships. Nobody is clean in the history of slavery. No people, no race.
