Report: John Kerry docking his yacht in Rhode Island to avoid Mass. taxes
posted at 5:41 pm on July 23, 2010 by Allahpundit
Via JWF, looks like it’s just speculation. But, as speculation goes, it’s awfully tasty.
Could the reason be that the Ocean State repealed its Boat Sales and Use Tax back in 1993, making the tiny state to the south a haven – like the Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Nassau – for tax-skirting luxury yacht owners?
Cash-strapped Massachusetts still collects a 6.25 percent sales tax and an annual excise tax on yachts. Sources say Isabel sold for something in the neighborhood of $7 million, meaning Kerry saved approximately $437,500 in sales tax and an annual excise tax of about $70,000.
The senior senator’s chief of staff David Wade denied the old salt was berthing his boat out of state to avoid ponying up to the commonwealth.
“The boat was designed by and purchased from a company in Rhode Island, and it’s based in Newport at the Newport Shipyard for long-term maintenance, upkeep and charter purposes, not tax reasons,” Wade told the Track.
Even if he’s innocent, just the idea that we’re talking about the tax strategies available to a prominent Democrat in berthing his yacht fills me with a warm glow. Say, you don’t suppose that the left’s outrage during the campaign over John McCain owning seven homes or whatever might have been manufactured, do you?
Semi-serious exit question: Why are stories like this so much more satisfying when Waffles is the lead character? Pick virtually any other filthy rich Democrat, including his old running mate, and substitute him/her here and the article becomes a curio. With Kerry, it’s revel-worthy. Why is that?

I can’t imagine there aren’t companies in Mass that provide “long-term maintenance, upkeep and charter” services. Seems like a follow-up question might be in order.

I think this means that Joe Biden called John Kerry unpatriotic.
Dorvillian on July 23, 2010 at 5:58 PM
Was shocked to see only two of the first 30 comments or so were about ‘Nam. It’s always been about Nam with this guy — he tried trading on his service and it backfired when he was found to be exaggerating. Honest question: did most Americans (or at least the GOP voters) know this guy before he ran for President? Probably not. Our first introduction was him “reporting for duty” and then getting Swiftboated. It’s always been about ‘Nam and our national discussion about that “war”.

Hey it’s unpatriotic to evade paying taxes. Oh….. yeah well I guess if you serve three months in Vietnam then turn on your fellow soldiers in a Congressional hearing that could be considered unpatriotic too. John F’n Kerry IS the lowest common denominator.

Phony though it is, Edwards’ southern good ol’ boy affectation insulates him just enough, as it does with Bill Clinton, from the complete taint of old money snobbery. But as Mark Steyn memorably put it after Kerry & company’s disastrous visit to Wendy’s during the summer of 2004, “Could Kerry slum it in the White House?”
Ed Driscoll on July 23, 2010 at 6:07 PM
Oh, and you should have added the awesome story about him playing softball this week in a shirt & tie! His office & Scotty Brown’s played, Brown’s won, but SB showed up in weekend warrior attire, while Kerry showed up in one of his pink Hermes ties, and batted in it. He’s such a moron.

It’s his lack of self-awareness. You just know Edwards and Kennedy enjoyed the freedom of being rich hypocritical sugar daddies to the people.

Tav on July 23, 2010 at 6:15 PM
I have no problem with Kerry docking his boat in another state to avoid paying taxes. Financially, it’s the 100% without-a-doubt correct thing to do. If I was in his shoes, I wouldn’t do anything differently. What I have a problem with is that Kerry would wag his finger and look down his nose at an adversary who did the exact same thing. He’d get all full of himself and give a ‘fat cat’ speech without once considering the hypocricy of his words. I don’t dislike him because he’s rich. I despise him because he’s a phoney.
joejm65 on July 23, 2010 at 6:15 PM
This is an impossibility. Tax policy doesn’t affect behavior, remember?
Selkirk on July 23, 2010 at 6:16 PM
It’s the lack of charisma that does it. Every other smug douchebag Dem can piddle on the carpet, and people go “isn’t he cute.” With Lurch, you want to smack him once for the piddle and once again for the ugly.
And when I say “ugly”, I’m reminded of the saying: “Beauty is only skin-deep, but ugly goes down to the bone.” Lurch has an anti-charisma field that makes you want to be contrary, rather than follow his lead.

TheBigOldDog on July 23, 2010 at 6:19 PM
Besides being the creepiest elitist of the ruling class, it makes one wonder that if he can justify spending a cool $7 million on the yacht, what’s a mere $430K in sales tax and the $70K in yearly taxes.
tru2tx on July 23, 2010 at 6:20 PM
It’s not his boat, it’s Teresa’s. Gigilo John doesn’t have the money for a yacht.

Have you noticed these wealthy Government guys never ever do that?
MayBee on July 23, 2010 at 6:23 PM
I’m going with:
1. Former Dem candidate.
2. We’ve had prolonged exposure to this turd and his arrogant, America-hating ways.
3. Massachusetts. Senator. What’s not to hate? The newly minted Sen Brown notwithstanding.
I’d say he’s on par with Gore for ability to induce loathing. There are some candidates for even scummier Democrats, but none as (formerly, at least) prominent.
TexasDan on July 23, 2010 at 6:23 PM
Does that mean it can be “rented”? So he’ll pay takes on the income it takes in?
Cindy Munford on July 23, 2010 at 6:24 PM
Cindy- I don’t know if the laws have changed, but it used to be people with yachts “chartered” them so they could deduct the expenses of the yacht.
Usually, shockingly, the “charter” would always be a net loss for tax purposes.
MayBee on July 23, 2010 at 6:26 PM
Hmmm, not sure if I can agree with that sentiment. In my ideal conservative/libertarian world, no one would have to justify a purchase like that, as long as they can afford it. Technically, it’s no one’s business. It’s Nobama who’s lecturing people about ‘how much is enough?’, I don’t think that’s an appropriate line of thinking for conservatives. JMO.

SWIFTBOAT TO AVOID TAXES!
Why do Democrats avoid paying the taxes they advocate for everyone else???
IntheNet on July 23, 2010 at 6:29 PM
The Douche Bag Factor (DBF) for both is quite high but for slightly different reasons. However, one can see Kerry doing what Edwards did to get his DBF in the stratosphere and one can see Edwards doing many of Kerry’s antics, especially parking his yacht in a “tax haven”. Basically what we have with these two is a leveling effect where their DBF’s are so high as to be indistinguishable.
But Kerry did serve in Vietnam . . .

Different rules for Kerry and the rest of America.
It was the same when he was in the military. Where are those records, btw? And why are Dems so reluctant to produce any personal documentation?
Kerry is a gigolo. We all know that. His first wife was rich. Divorce. He met Thereeeeeeeeeeeeeeeza! and fell in love with her over lunch at some banquet in Brazil. I guess he probably spent his last dime to bribe a waiter to switch place names in order to be seated next to the Portuguese sex pot. She likes Senators, and he likes rich women. Perfect, no?
John Kerry, well, the Heinz Trust pay far less in taxes than ordinary American taxpayers because, well, she’s rich and can afford the best tax attorneys in the country. When Kerry ran for POTUS (shudder and vomit) the effective tax rate for Theeeeeeeeeeeereza! was ~~ 14%.
You really have to hand it to the horse-faced, whining, cowardly, lying, jacka$$ loser. He’s like all the elite. They crawl out of the scum and manage to survive rather nicely knowing that their survival depends on oppressing the productive people in the country.
And Kerry, the predictable snob, never has a problem pi$$ing on regular, working Americans while he dons some spandex to go wind surfing or bike riding.
FOAD, Kerry. It can’t be too soon.

Man, Howie was on fire this afternoon-usually I don’t bother listening to his entire show but today I did.
He led off by playing the theme song from “Gilligan’s Island”.
He then thanked the Boston Herald for writing this afternoon’s entire show for him.
Of course, the Herald and WRKO Radio are the only Boston “news outlets” touching this story.
If this had been Scott Brown’s boat, they would be all over it like Kerri on a rich widow.
What’s just as hypocritical as the tax issue here is that Horse-Face totally ignored all of the fine New England makers of boats, and went overseas to get his float.

Just like when Splash had his mother declared a ‘resident of Florida’ upon her death. Never mind that she hadn’t been to Florida in over 20 years.
And forget the fact that the ‘family’ saved millions in estate taxes that otherwise would have gone to the unwashed masses that Splash always ‘championed’.
GarandFan on July 23, 2010 at 6:59 PM
Quite honestly, I’m amazed that he got out of the military alive. His biggest danger wasn’t the “enemy.” What a disgusting freak.
Cody1991 on July 23, 2010 at 7:02 PM

Bicyea on July 23, 2010 at 7:15 PM
Absolutely right -but my point is that if he can afford a $7 million boat, and is really concerned about the “little people” he is supposed to represent, why make a hypocritical dodge from paying taxes of which would help his state.
If a person has that kind of money and wants to dodge the taxes – totally understandable – then he shouldn’t be in the business of telling others what they should do with their own wealth.
tru2tx on July 23, 2010 at 7:16 PM
Yeah, well…. there are other reasons for which I doubt his ‘patriotism.’ He’s happy to live off of this country’s achievements while producing NOTHING, enjoy the safety it provides while denigrating the military, and he likes living off of rich women.
One of the reasons I love Dick Cheney (and there are many) was watching him put Kerry down in the 2004 VP debate. The disgust on Cheney’s face was priceless. Of course, Kerry had insulted Cheney’s daughter, but he made Kerry look like the worm he truly is.
