Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on July 23, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

This OOTD comes from Bobby Jindal, who related a conversation he had with Barack Obama when Jindal challenged the moratorium on drilling and the economic damage it would do.  At about 1:10 on this tape from his speech to fellow Louisiana protesters, Jindal explains Obama’s advice to the people whose livelihoods will end, thanks to Obama’s arbitrary and capricious ban on further oil work in the Gulf:

The President of the United States came down here, met with us in person, and this is what he told us. He said this to me. He said, “Governor, if people lose their jobs because of the moratorium, they can file a BP claim. I said, “Mr. President, with all due respect, what if BP doesn’t pay?” He said, “Don’t worry, Governor, they can file an unemployment claim.”

So the answer to the White House’s needless destruction of good-paying jobs is …. let them eat unemployment claims!

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Trivia: @Aslan’s Girl

“Let them eat cake” referred to the crusty residue that is “caked” onto the pans when you bake bread. She was actually saying “let them eat the crap left over in the bread pans.”

Regardless if the money comes from BP or unemployment checks, it’s still a fraction of what a person would normally earn. That’s the real message. Obama wants all of us to earn a fraction of what we are or were earning. Nothing sinks your self-esteem and sense of worth like your earning potential. Obama will feel better when he makes you feel worse. That’s the end game.

What about the porkulus dollars, Mr. President?

You have almost a half a trillion dollar slush fund in your hands, and here’s an amazing opportunity to help create jobs in LA.

And you won’t.

What the hell is Obama doing with porkulus, and why doesn’t anybody seem to care? This is a scandal of historic proportions, and nobody bothers to ask. WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING WITH A HALF A TRILLION DOLLARS OF OUR MONEY??? They CLEARLY are not using it to create jobs or help the unemployed.

In a nutshell.

BP wouldn’t, or shouldn’t, pay on this but they won’t have a choice; Obama is now controlling their money.

Convenient how that worked out.

LSU economist says drilling moratorium will cost local, national economy
==================

A Louisiana State University economist says that the moratorium on offshore drilling will be costly not only to the local economy, but to the national economy.

Banking professor Joseph Mason says in its first six months, the moratorium could cost the Gulf Coast 8,169 jobs, $2.1 billion in economic activity and $98 million in state and local tax revenue.

Nationwide, it could cost 12,046 jobs, $2.8 billion in economic activity and $219 million in tax revenue.

Gulf oil spill: Obama names investigation panel

President Obama named five panelists to a commission tasked with finding ways to avoid a repeat of the Deepwater Horizon disaster, which killed 11 men and started the nation’s worst oil spill. They will be led by a former Florida governor and U.S. senator, Bob Graham, and a former administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency, William K. Reilly.

Race Played Role in Obama Car Dealer Closures
By William Tate
——————–

The Obama administration, already under fire for unprecedented allegations of racial bias, faces a new bias claim from a most unlikely source: one of the administration’s own inspectors general.

Decisions on which car dealerships to close as part of the auto industry bailout — closures the Obama administration forced on General Motors and Chrysler — were based in part on race and gender, according to a report by Troubled Asset Relief Program Special Inspector General Neal M. Barofsky.

[D]ealerships were retained because they were recently appointed, were key wholesale parts dealers, or were minority- or woman-owned dealerships. [Emphasis added.]

———————————

As has been widely reported, the Inspector General’s study skewered the Obama Gang for strong-arming the companies into closing 2,000 dealerships, costing an estimated 100,000 people their jobs during a recession.

But the news media has ignored key elements of Barofsky’s report — elements that are far more damaging, if possible, to Obama. As we reported earlier in the week, a top Obama official, manufacturing czar and “Auto Team” leader Ron Bloom admitted that the dealerships could have been kept open, saving those jobs, “but that doing so would have been inconsistent with the President’s mandate for ‘shared sacrifice.’”
———————

Nevertheless, as Barofsky notes, “ultimately close to half of all of the GM dealerships identified for termination were in rural areas.”

That is where raw, hard, sewage-filled Chicago politics came into play.

Records indicate that in 2008, Obama lost the vote totals in the nation’s 1,300 rural counties by nearly 80%.

The Obama administration’s insistence on radical numbers of closures ended up shuttering dealerships in those rural areas disproportionately, while dealerships and jobs in metro areas — Obama’s geographical base — were left open.
experts said that while metro areas were oversaturated with GM and Chrysler dealerships and reductions were needed in these areas, this was not the case in rural areas where GM and Chrysler had an advantage over their import competitors. [...]

Haiku Guy on July 23, 2010 at 8:47 AM

He said, “Don’t worry, Governor, they can file an unemployment claim.”

I have to disagree that this is an amateurism. I see this as a statement of political belief by Øbummer, the Big Government leftist radical who embraces the nanny state. He cannot allow any opportunity for self-determination and self-reliance to exist throughout the chain of government entities. Thus, if one does not (is not allowed) to earn one’s living, one will have only the living that government can provide. His statement to Governor Jindal is not ignorance or amateur behavior, it is a political reality for someone who wishes to make government the most important aspect of your life.
.
It is actually “amateur” not to recognize that the quoted Øbummer statement is another formulation of “From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.”

ExpressoBold on July 23, 2010 at 8:49 AM

I’m sure a lot of people in that state voted for him. Could our dear leader care any less about the people who elected him to lead the country. I think we’ll continue to see just how care-less he really is.

Keep in mind that the GOP has pretty terrible character judgment.

No, this is related to the topic at hand. I remember when Gov. Jindal gave the GOP rejoinder to Obama’s state of the empire speech, and Jindal was declared DOA as a Presidential contender for his bad performance, not by the left, but by the hallowed GOP movers and shakers. The blessed Centrists, the men of Reason.

Nice.

But when Michael Steele was picked to head the RNC, he was hailed as a brilliant pick.

Look who’s showing us what they’re really made of?

Steele, the centrist savior, is a joke. Jindal, the human embarrassment, has the gonads centrists do not.

The GOP doesn’t need democrats to defeat them. They defeat themselves.

She obviously approves of Black Liberation Theology as does her husband. In fact, their tax returns showed that their largest (and I think, only) “charitable” contribution was a rather large one to TUCC. You aren’t missing a thing – and as someone else pointed out, if these workers are self-employed, no unemployment insurance either.

It’s a great way to destroy the oil industry though. Take the workers and give them about 1/2 (unemployment) of what they made until they move on to some other less lucrative job. Force a bigger burden on the US taxpayers. The $110 Billion paid out last year in fraudulent claims wasn’t enough.

WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING WITH A HALF A TRILLION DOLLARS OF OUR MONEY??? They CLEARLY are not using it to create jobs or help the unemployed.

jeff_from_mpls on July 23, 2010 at 8:27 AM

They’ll find it and spread the wealth in OCT. Have to figure out where they need to buy votes the most first!http://strata-sphere.com/blog/index.php/archives/13776

So the answer to the White House’s needless destruction of good-paying jobs is …. let them eat unemployment claims!

the answer is pretty similar when you fire a woman from the USDA….what do you do? Offer her another government job of course! Everything is a nail and a government intervention is always the hammer…

“Thank you sir, may I have another?!”

Akzed on July 23, 2010 at 10:17 AM

The most out of touch and divisive president in our history. He could care less about those who suffer from being unemployed. What he cares about is making it the fault of the previous administration and the GOP. That’s his mission. He says it every single time he speaks. Time for another vacation! This time he’s going to the Gulf so he can show the people how much he cares.

scalleywag on July 23, 2010 at 10:22 AM

Why worry about keeping a private sector job? Government largess is “freely” available and besides, eventually, you’ll all be working for the government, so why not get used to it now? I truly believe that is his mindset and the basis for his lack of understanding of the anger out here in America.

Extrafishy on July 23, 2010 at 10:23 AM

I sure wish Obama was on unemployment.

I said, “Mr. President, with all due respect, what if BP doesn’t pay?” He said, “Don’t worry, Governor, they can file an unemployment claim.”

You’re welcome.”

Rae on July 23, 2010 at 10:30 AM

Hey, remember kids, it’s not “unemployment.”

It’s FUNEMPLOYMENT!!!

CurtZHP on July 23, 2010 at 10:33 AM

As the earthquake swarms accelerated and smoke began issuing from the top of Mt. Venusius the citizens of Pompeii went about their daily lives blissfully ignorant of the extinction level event about to overtake them. Obama’s focus on destroying private sector jobs will bring about a tipping point that for all practical purposes will be an extinction level event for our private economy. The only question is do we recognize the warnings and do we have time to take effective actions?

Jindal lost me at “With all due respect”.

Grace_is_sufficient on July 23, 2010 at 9:12 AM

It was perfectly appropriate to say that. Jindal is showing respect for the office. That doesn’t necessarily include respect for the current occupant.

Extrafishy on July 23, 2010 at 10:23 AM

That is definitely his mindset. Since he isn’t as bright as he claims to be he hasn’t realized that these jobs need to be funded with tax money. As long as he continues to destroy the private sector he rather defeats his own efforts.

Where did this guy go to school again?

Cody1991 on July 23, 2010 at 10:40 AM

I’m curious. That doesn’t fit into either “created” or “saved”. What new catagory would it fall under? “turned into an entitlement”?

OxyCon on July 23, 2010 at 11:07 AM

Don’t you worry, didn’t you know that Obama was ‘once unemployed’?

Ergo, he is one of us.

No, no, no. Barry wants the Dems to lose some seats so he can blame everything on the Republicans. He’s saving it for himself in 2011.

Word to Michelle-ma-belle – he’d throw you under the bus if he had to, to save himself.

I feel sorry for Malia and Sasha. My father was a man of honor, who succeeded through his own hard work and never did an underhanded deal in his life. What are M&S going to learn from their daddy?

Jindal lost me at “With all due respect”.

Because Jindal is a better man than you are.
I wish many in the GOP would follow Reagan like they claim to. Reagan’s respect for all people is what helped him win two elections without Fox, talk radio, or conservative blogs.

itsnotaboutme on July 23, 2010 at 11:29 AM

BP is not responsible for unemployment claims if the gov’t places a moratorium on drilling…am I missing something here? am I out of touch?

I agree of course, but having buckled under to the Bamster’s $20B Fatwa, it may be too late to make that argument.

“Barack, will that cake make my ars look even bigger?”…what she says.

“If he answers that, he’s dead, and he knows it”…what she thinks.

Schadenfreude on July 23, 2010 at 12:24 PM

And when a majority of Americans are out of work, and there isn’t any money left, or tax revenue coming in to cover unemployment….then what?

Look! If the man doesn’t give a fig about a botched abortion, and letting a baby die alone in a laundry bin….he sure as hell doesn’t give a fig about people, and whether they’re working or not. He’s deliberately doing this. If this isn’t seen by some, than I feel sorry for ya, because when it does hit you, it’s going to hurt even worse!!!
