Obama approval on economy drops to new low in CNN poll

posted at 3:15 pm on July 23, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

So much for Recovery Summer.  The entire idea of this new PR campaign was to stimulate recovery in the trending on Barack Obama’s approval ratings, but it’s been as effective at that as Obamanomics has been at reviving the economy.  CNN is the latest to notice that the trend continues:

Americans approval of how President Barack Obama is handling the nation’s economy has dropped to its lowest level of his presidency, according to a new national poll.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey indicates that 42 percent of the public approves of how Obama’s dealing with the economy, down 2 points from March, with 57 percent disapproving of his performance on the economy, up 2 points from March. The survey’s Friday release comes as the president made comments at the White House on what he termed the progress made this week on the economy and job recovery.

This isn’t a big change from their last survey on the question.  It’s a four-point swing on a question that has been a problem for Obama since last September, the last time he had a majority approval on the issue.  Since then, he’s been significantly underwater.

In fact, the big takeaway is just how little opinion has changed on the economy.  While Biden keeps talking up the economy, he’s speaking to empty rooms, figuratively speaking.  The number of respondents in CNN polls saying that the economy is either somewhat or very poor has been 78% in every poll since March, and only descended from 83% in February.

Obviously, people aren’t at all convinced that anything has improved, and for good reason.  If the administration insists on pushing its Recovery Summer campaign, they risk painting themselves as hopelessly out of touch.

It’s unsurprising. Obama is a classical interventionist who, unlike Clinton, is convinced of his own omnipotence.

The only question is how much damage he can do before he can be voted out of office.

[Recovery] Summer Song – Chad & Jeremy

Homes foreclosin’ in the summer breeze
Showin’ off their overgrown weeds
As we walked by

Unemployed on a summer’s day
Spending all our savings away
Just you and I

Unions patrolling K street at night
Trying to start political fights
In the starry sky

They say that all Presidencies must end some day
Obama’s approval must fall
But don’t you know that it hurts me so
That he has two years go
Wish you he had to go
Go go go go

And when the insane
Vote for more liberal pain
I’ll think of recovery summer again
And come unglued

After 18 months of lying for, fluffing and massaging Obama, they have failed to keep his poll numbers from the 5th rung of the basement steps.
Either they just aren’t as good at building up as they are at tearing down or people really are paying attention to the monster under their beds and refusing to accept the assurances of their nannies that “everything is just fine”.

They are the ones that blame Bush for everything – Barry is doing his best, but gosh darn, that George W left everything in such an awful mess.

halfastro on July 23, 2010 at 3:42 PM

The reason that Bush’s numbers got so low is that in the end conservatives finally abandoned him as a hopeless too. Conservative is an actual thoughtful political philosophy, while liberalism is either a religion or psychosis–or both. Some basal number of liberals will never abandon their religion–just as blacks still support in huge numbers the first half-white president.

Obambi will never get a low as Bush’s polls because it’s harder for a liberal to switch religions than it is for a conservative to soberly reassess the performance of a president vis-a-vis his political philosophy.

PD Quig on July 23, 2010 at 3:43 PM

Obama is betting that in 12-16 months the economic cycle will begin to shift and move upward, despite his poor decisions.
We are powerful enough to overcome what he has done…however we will always be hamstrung by his poor leadership.
But as the cycle moves upward, from a dismal low, he will try and ride that small wave.
His ego is too large but for him to think that everything his does is right…and will be proven to be right.
So expect more of the same…he is just waiting for some glimmer, some type of “turn around”.

Yes, but it gives us a chance to gauge the level of commitment on the part of true believers. Knowing the numbers helps Republicans to formulate a campaign strategy to blunt, do an end-around or marginalize those hardcore progressives and OJ-jury voters. I still believe the white guilt-trippers are rapidly falling off the bandwagon and just won’t be there in measurable numbers in 2012. Conservatives will crawl through broken glass to get to the polls to vote against him (still need that conservative candidate to vote for – there’s the rub)and independents will be sick of the economic turmoil and devastation and ready to change…again.

eaglewingz08 on July 24, 2010 at 8:32 AM

President Obama’s handicap in golf is he plays left handed and hates the right so much he ruins his capabilities (you tube President golfing – or as I see it FLOGging).

As a 2 handicapper right handed golfer, I know the muscles of the left side of the body provide the power applied to the club head as it strikes the stationary ball causing it to propel itself forward.

However, all right-handed golfers realize this, and also understands that it is the right side of the body, hand and arm, which control the balls direction of flight.

Therefore, your best golfers (Mr. Michelson and handful of others excepted) realize standing on the left side of the golf ball as you look down the fairway, is the best position to take advantage of the power of the bodies left muscles for distance, but use the right arm and hand to properly guide the ball in right path to its destination with the least amount of effort (strokes).
