Video: “Same As It Ever Was”

posted at 2:12 pm on July 22, 2010 by Allahpundit

Three and a half minutes of brilliance to cleanse the palate via Ann Althouse. You don’t even have to watch to enjoy it; just close your eyes and savor the uncanny vocal impersonation.

I’m assuming that everyone — everyone — knows the reference point here, but in case there are any young HA readers out there, this will set you right. Once upon a time, little ones, there was a cable channel that aired music videos…

Blowback

You could be 30 and not realize that. The channel was nothing but reality TV by the early 90s.

MadisonConservative on July 22, 2010 at 2:17 PM

That was awesome!

milwife88 on July 22, 2010 at 2:19 PM

Same as it ever was….

Dr Evil on July 22, 2010 at 2:19 PM

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! THIS IS BRILLIANT!!!

I have to share this with my big brother, Ben. He was totally into MTV (before it sucked) and we both used to watch new music videos like the one this is based on. When it was new. Sigh.

And if you don’t recognize it…man that makes me feel super old. Please tell me others know this video too!

powerpro on July 22, 2010 at 2:20 PM

Dude! Totally brilliant….Superb.

I wish there would have been a beer summit cameo or something akin to that.

Awesome!

I remember back in the day when MTV reigned….When Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home” was video of the week for ??umpteen weeks??…

when it was all day, all night, in Stereo….

yep, when those days rolled by….

ted c on July 22, 2010 at 2:22 PM

pretty good but this will more than likely be yanked soon.

It would be nice if we could _assume_ that some Hot Air commenters, you know, KNOW ABOUT STUFF that happened before they were born, but having barely survived previous threads on non-NASCAR topics…

A question for those who get it:

Is that song the official anthem of Generation X, or would you pick the Violent Femme’s “Add It Up” instead.

fivefeetoffury on July 22, 2010 at 2:26 PM

More, please!

30 pcs of silver on July 22, 2010 at 2:26 PM

This is the comedy gold we need. This country is so far overdue for a laugh, a really really REALLY good laugh—-and the source of that laugh sits on some golf course somewhere.

ted c on July 22, 2010 at 2:28 PM

I can only imagine David Byrne’s reaction.

Bill Ramey on July 22, 2010 at 2:29 PM

The original video was choreographed by Toni Basil, who was then inspired to do “Hey, Mickey!”

Her career as a Hollywood choreographer extends from American Graffiti thru at least The House Bunny.

Karl on July 22, 2010 at 2:31 PM

Brilliant! Best video I’ve seen this week next to the bubble blowing dolphins!

ROTFLMFBO!!!
The downside is I will never hear the original song the same way again.

annoyinglittletwerp on July 22, 2010 at 2:32 PM

I don’t care how old ya are…you GOTTA know the Heads! Their best IMHO is THIS one, but yeah…Tina Weymouth and Chris Franz (formed Tom Tom Club) are the coolest people in music I’ve ever met. And they put on an awesome show.

JetBoy on July 22, 2010 at 2:33 PM

Yeah the original MTV I remember “Take Me To The River”

Take my money, my cigarettes

I was a teenager during MTV’s heyday.
I remember watching a ZZ Top video(‘TV Dinners’)and looking aghast at my mother because she thought the monster coming out of the TV dinner tray was ‘cute’.
I’m now around the same age that my mother was when she made that comment.
*pained look*

Once upon a time, little ones, there was a cable channel that aired music videos…

Oh yes, I remember as a wee young lass back in 1981, watching the count down like it was a space shuttle going off into space… to the last 5 seconds. Sitting there with my dad, who didn’t know what MTV was going to be… and watching the first video “Video killed the Radio Star” and him getting up and leaving.

I think it is now, Reality Show killed the Video Star.

MadisonConservative on July 22, 2010 at 2:17 PM

I’m 30, and I watched quite of bit of MTV in the early 90s. It was about 25% Real World/Road Rules, 25% Beavis and Butthead, and 50% music. A few other shows here and there (Brooklyn Grind, Singled Out). I’d say the music didn’t officially die until the late 90s.

Bill Scrunty on July 22, 2010 at 2:46 PM

Drowning cannot hurt a man!
Fire cannot hurt a man. Not the Government Man.

This video pretty much calls it…..this presidency is over. It’s as over as MTV is over as a music video channel. The White House is no more about governing the greatest country than MTV is about showcasing music bands and their products. They are one in the same, they’re both a primped freakin’ reality show—both poorly produced, poorly acted, talentless and unworthy of attention. Unfortunately, all of us are supporting cast in this crappy show.

This also feels like the Truman Show, with Jim Carrey. Obama is Truman and is completely oblivious to the real world. His reality is concocted, manufactured and scripted (or telepromptered) and the rest of us are merely the supporting cast in the show. He lives in a bubble and is completely unaware of the truth about himself, or the rest of us……

I think that whole album deserves every bit of praise that gets heaped upon it, but I happen like the early mid 80′s weird stuff they were doing along with Fripp and Belew and Gabriel. But it is odd and I can see why some people don’t like it. My Dad called it “that drug music”.
