Video: “Same As It Ever Was”

posted at 2:12 pm on July 22, 2010 by Allahpundit

Three and a half minutes of brilliance to cleanse the palate via Ann Althouse. You don’t even have to watch to enjoy it; just close your eyes and savor the uncanny vocal impersonation.

I’m assuming that everyone — everyone — knows the reference point here, but in case there are any young HA readers out there, this will set you right. Once upon a time, little ones, there was a cable channel that aired music videos…

Great! – Humor and satire is the most potent weapon against Obama and the Democrats.

(Even Saul Alinsky would agree on that! Rule #5: “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.”)

albill on July 22, 2010 at 3:50 PM

Anyone that didn’t get the reference within the first three seconds should be barred from all public discourse forever.

Also, get off my lawn.

And Martha Quinn was hot.

good video though…you can’t go wrong with bowie

cmsinaz on July 22, 2010 at 3:53 PM

I thought their other CGIs were lame but this one is pretty cool. I loved the Talking Heads. Burning Down the House!

shick on July 22, 2010 at 3:54 PM

That was the best ad I’ve ever seen. Didn’t see the donate button but it’s definitely worthy.

Talking Heads (David Burne)

shick on July 22, 2010 at 3:55 PM

My favorite music video of all time!

This one is a close second.

Well maybe this one :-)

Like a kid in a candy store….can’t make up my mind.

Oldnuke on July 22, 2010 at 3:59 PM

120 minutes was awesome in its day

A half-assed version of 120 Minutes now airs on VH1 Classic Sunday mornings at 2 am. No VJ of course, just two hours of videos with a lot of commercials smashed in. But at least they’re old alternative videos you probably haven’t seen in many years, the kind VH1 Classic rarely lets air at any other time of the week.

good to know…thanks!

miss them…

NO more Black Prez’s for a while until this rascism issue is gone. The behaviour in the recent video from the NAACP show blacks aren’t ready. Meanwhile B.O. heads off for another weekend of goofing off.

johnnyU on July 22, 2010 at 4:18 PM

Credit where its due. Good video work!!

johnnyU on July 22, 2010 at 4:23 PM

Perfect!

ClanDerson on July 22, 2010 at 4:26 PM

Wonder if Talking Heads will sue for copyright infringement. I doubt if David Burne is a conservative.

College Prof on July 22, 2010 at 4:27 PM

That is funny as hell.

I totally lost it when it got to the line …

“And you may ask yourself … MY GOD! WHAT HAVE I DONE!!”

Fantastic.

As for MTV, they dont play videos anymore, but at least new episodes of Beavis and Butthead are on the way!

jazzmo on July 22, 2010 at 4:33 PM

I loved the PZ take on Satisfaction… they are pure gold with their music video work.

ajacksonian on July 22, 2010 at 4:36 PM

Wow! Someone put a lot of hard work into that…awesome!!

ROFL…that made my day. Hilarious.

The Lone Platypus on July 22, 2010 at 3:51 PM

I always liked the blonde woman on USA’s “Night Flight” (which is where I think I first saw the Talking Heads video…or maybe it was on an episode of SCTV…)

ddrintn on July 22, 2010 at 6:12 PM

Awesome.

Inanemergencydial on July 22, 2010 at 6:18 PM

Ohmygawd this is GREAT!!! Unfortunately that opinion means I’ll probably get spit on by David Bryne should we ever cross paths.

kd6rxl on July 22, 2010 at 6:52 PM

8/1/81. Watched the first video by the Buggles, stayed glued to the set for the next 12 hrs until I passed out. AKA the good old days.

I waaant my MmmmmTVvvvvvv.

Their work shows up on Pajamas Media from time to time.

theotherone on July 22, 2010 at 7:45 PM

Speaking of 80′s videos, how about Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” with a very young Courtney Cox being pulled out of the audience to dance on the stage with him.

PatMac on July 22, 2010 at 8:46 PM

Wait. a parody by conservatives that has technical merit and doesn’t embarrass itself? I am so subscribed.

Thanks AP!

PolitiNOOB on July 22, 2010 at 9:13 PM

Outstanding parody!

bikermailman on July 22, 2010 at 5:20 PM

Funny thing is, that animated version of Michelle is WAY hotter than the real thing!

Great video. One little thing I would have added for an extra laugh would be to have Chris Matthews head explode as he finished his rant.

UltimateBob on July 22, 2010 at 10:32 PM

wow.

the Talking Heads really were ahead of their time.

Wonder if Talking Heads will sue for copyright infringement. I doubt if David Burne is a conservative.

College Prof on July 22, 2010 at 4:27 PM

I don’t think so. If I get the gist of this right, since it’s a parody the producer can claim fair use. Now, if they were to try other songs using Talking Heads material as their base, there might be a claim.

BillH on July 23, 2010 at 3:53 AM

Outstanding Vocal impersonation!

Would have loved to have seen some of Rahm or Axelrod trying to spin though and maybe Mourning Joe on the beach or was that him in the blue shorts?

Play another round of golf. lol

jpmn on July 23, 2010 at 9:43 AM

Jeff Goldstein nailed the issue with this.

and this. With added wisdom from Morgan Freeman on how to deal with race issues going forward.

Mr. Joe on July 23, 2010 at 3:00 PM

Does it bother anyone else that they emphasize the oil leak as the objection to this administration?

What about the economic policies (stimulus et al) that are freaking every company out so much that they wont hire?

What about border security?

What about foreign policy?

The oil fiasco, disaster though it is, is a distraction and we are falling for it.

Quetzal on July 23, 2010 at 5:17 PM

Wonder if Talking Heads will sue for copyright infringement. I doubt if David Burne is a conservative.

Nope, this is parody and as such is protected under the First Amendment.

I’ll bet Byrne would like to sue though; he just sued Charlie Crist for using “Road to Nowhere” (the actual track, not a parody) in a campaign ad.

I got a spam email from David Byrne right before the election that would make you burn your Talking Heads albums. Note that he’s not even an American citizen, so *sniff* he couldn’t vote for Obama himself. Not that it stopped Barry from running.

saint kansas on July 23, 2010 at 6:04 PM

I laughed so hard… then I cried. It was just too depressing explaining to the kids where the original song was from. *sniff*

Quetzal on July 23, 2010 at 5:17 PM

Come on. One issue at a time. They talk about the oil spill in this little video because it fits in with “letting the days go by”.

ddrintn on July 24, 2010 at 9:32 AM

ddrintn on July 24, 2010 at 9:32 AM

Exactly. As a matter of fact, the Donls are pros at giving lightning focus to the issues that resonate with the American People. Fair or not, lets keep taking the pages from their playbook that work for them.

Good Gulf rundown and funny to boot.

Mr. Joe on July 23, 2010 at 3:00 PM

Wow, I’ve always liked Morgan Freeman, and it’s nice to have an actor I like open up his mouth and say something smart for a change. Good for him, he said more in that 55 second clip (minus Mike Wallace stammering) than most people say in entire speeches.

DrAllecon on July 24, 2010 at 12:41 PM

johnnyU on July 22, 2010 at 4:18 PM

See, here’s a problem. By pointing out a stupid comment like this, it only draws attention to it, encouraging more bigotry. But if it’s ignored (like it probably should be) then intellectually dishonest people can claim that everyone NOT calling BS is implicitly agreeing with it.

DrAllecon on July 24, 2010 at 12:45 PM

Or his leg starts to tingle and then stops, then with a sad look and a tear falling he breaks into a chorus of “The Thrill is Gone…”

MTV from the moment it went live Aug. 1, 1983 (cripes, I was 2 1/2 years old).

You all are making me feel ancient. In 1983, I had been in the Air Force for two years (I was 21).

Talking Heads music is classic…but now even more so! :)
