Video: Rubio vs Maddow, Round 2

posted at 9:30 am on July 22, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Marco Rubio cut a funny ad last week incorporating an attack on him by MSNBC host Rachel Maddow, asking viewers to decide whether they’d like less government spending, lower taxes, and less intrusion into their lives — or whether they’d rather tune in Maddow at 9 PM. Maddow, apparently overcome with gratitude towards Rubio, proceeded to respond by making Rubio’s argument for him. “In Florida, where the economy is really, really bad, unemployment stands at 11.4%, higher than the national average, foreclosures up nearly 10% in the first half of the year, higher than the national average …” Say, isn’t that what Rubio has been saying all along — that Barack Obama and Charlie Crist have done a lousy job? Who knew Rachel Maddow was a Tea Partier?

“These are troubled times.” Maddow gets that right, too.

They really believe (or pretend to at least) that the cure to government driven economic destruction is more government intervention. Hilarious!

I never even heard of this Maddow guy before.

tommyboy on July 22, 2010 at 9:40 AM

Who knew Rachel Maddow was a Tea Partier?

I think the whole exchange between Rubio and Maddow was a blast!

Rubio’s video.

Competing videos? Using the same music and backdrop?

I liked Maddow’s mention of what time her showed aired.

Nelsa on July 22, 2010 at 9:42 AM

Hey, maybe like Kramer on ‘Seinfeld’ Marco’s bringing Rachel back over to the other team…

jon1979 on July 22, 2010 at 9:42 AM

Hi. I’m Rachel Maddow.

I need all the ratings help I can get.

I’ll accept that help from anyone.

I recognize Rubio in the clip but who’s the other guy?

I swore, in an effort to improve my character, that I would never, ever use the “C” word to describe a female member of the species.

But, man, she makes it so hard…..

That was adorable. She thinks she is smart.

Marco better not be wetting that gunpowder he’s keeping dry on this nobody. MSNBC, Marco – you can’t waste one penny responding to things no one hears being said and that will always be against you.

Scary thought: A million points of light..on the tips of pitch forks.

Like an icecube melting, it is going to slowly dawn on the liberal elites that the economic screw up by this administration was one of the great blunders of all time.

Worse than that, it is in economics. You know, bread and butter or “pocketbook” issues. The same ones that spawned the Feench Revolution, the Russian Communist Revolution, Hitler, the Chinese Cultural Revolution…

They elected a gang of dolts from the same overrated mold as themselves and can’t live with the fact that the folks from flyover country knew some things they didn’t.

IlikedAUH2O on July 22, 2010 at 9:54 AM

Could we please dispense with the attacks on Maddow’s looks? Didn’t we blast people who talked about Sarah Palin’s body parts just a couple of months ago?

USMCDevilDog on July 22, 2010 at 10:06 AM

Like an icecube melting, it is going to slowly dawn on the liberal elites that the economic screw up by this administration was one of the great blunders of all time.

You think so? I don’t know, these are the same communists that have always believed that the great mass of unwashed Americans need to be herded, with them as the herdsmen of course.

99% would love nothing better than to have a complete governmental takeover of the entire nation, and they are all under the impression that their own amazing intellect will be noticed and rewarded with the job of overseer somewhere in the massive bureaucracy.

Bishop on July 22, 2010 at 10:07 AM

Ed Morrissey on July 22, 2010 at 9:56 AM

I agree. Maddow is just a person doing a job. (She has a job).

She has to get some credit for at least standing up for her views and opinions.

At least she is not a wind-sock.

The whole exchange of views was actually refreshing and enlightening to some.

Nelsa on July 22, 2010 at 10:12 AM

I don’t watch her show so I haven’t developed any particular dislike of Ms. Maddow but I don’t find her looks repulsive. She looks athletic. Maybe it a guy thing and I don’t understand.

Sorry Ed, didn’t read your request until after I posted…plus it’s almost an impossible request to abide by. Kind of like when you post a picture of Henry Waxman…it is just shockingly gross all over again…

Ltlgeneral64 on July 22, 2010 at 10:17 AM

It just amazes me that no one on that show could see that they were actually helping Rubio by running through all those statistics. On the other hand, someone at the Rubio campaign must be really sharp for setting up this trap for her. Keep up the good work.

Sorry, Madow, but I am an old fart that carries around the misguided presupposition that people actually think about what they are doing. My bad.

Texas Aggie on July 22, 2010 at 10:18 AM

I live in Rhode Island. I donated to Marco early on.

Over time, I have been having second thoughts about that man. I can’t put my finger on it, I feel I am being snookered by yet another ego-driven lawyer. I have problems with stories about his financial dealings both political and personal.

Nothing solid, I m just getting creeped out. Am I alone?

FOWG1 on July 22, 2010 at 10:18 AM

It is so typical of liberals to act so pompous and condescending as if they are the smartest people in the room,
…..when the reality is they don’t have a dam# clue.

Great job by Rubio of rubbing the failure of the “smartest President ever” right in the face of one of his biggest cheerleaders.

Maybe for an Encore….Mrs. genius here could highlight what a great job Obama has done closing Gitmo and not doing business with lobbyist.

Baxter Greene on July 22, 2010 at 10:18 AM

FOX News is the unstoppable leak. Now wait for a crack.

Can Maddow hear the burbling water? She saw Air America sink.

She can’t change. But if the media had any sense, they would change their act before someone changed it for them.

One would think that they would have fought the Comcast merger like Senator Al Franken did.

http://consumerist.com/2010/06/al-franken-hates-the-nbccomcast-merger-more-than-anyone-has-ever-hated-anything.html

It can only get worse for them.

You’re probably right, but I did appreciate seeing Maddow’s softer, gentler side.

I see her in a completely different light.

BuckeyeSam on July 22, 2010 at 10:22 AM

How can anyone talk through a smirk that big? Seriously, I don’t remember her lips all curled up like that before but I don’t go out of my way to watch her screed-casts.
.
Anyway, congratulations to RM on confirming Rubio’s criticism’s of the Øbamaconomy in Florida. Nice job, girlie!

ExpressoBold on July 22, 2010 at 10:24 AM

I haven’t heard this said, so I’ll chime in with Rubio played Maddow like a violin.

He baits, she bites, he uses her response BRILLIANTLY.

Texas Aggie on July 22, 2010 at 10:18 AM

That’s because to hear liberals tell it….they are the smartest people in the room.

Here is yet another shining example of the incredible intellect of the democratic party:

SEN. HARRY REID (D-NV):

“Isn’t it a good thing today in America that we have an automobile manufacturing sector? If it had been up to them [Republicans], General Motors would be gone. If it were up to them, Ford Motor Company would probably be gone. Chrysler definitely would be gone.”

Ford did not take any bailout money from the government.

….I am in awe of the superior skills displayed by the liberal serf.

Cindy Munford on July 22, 2010 at 10:32 AM

The bottom line is – well the bottom line!

No matter who says it, no matter how they are trying to spin it, this is now Obama-nomics and it does not work!

As for pulling Maddow’s comments into a Rubio ad, well, at least they found some use for them! No doubt other Republicans will be looking for similar approaches.

Just this morning, Meg Whittman replayed part of some of Jerry Brown ad’s. The part she replayed was the two seconds that explained who was running the ad. Of course, it all ties back to the corrupt public labor unions out here in California. In the ‘old days’ these hack groups would just run these ad’s uncontested. This time around it is good to see these people called out as what they are.

Freddy on July 22, 2010 at 10:39 AM

“Crist loves Obama” will be effective. He’s a flip-flopper and a liberal Obama guy.

How’s Obama’s popularity holding up in FL anyway?

Arrogance and sarcasm ooze from Rachal Maddow. She is the poster girl for liberalist condescension.

All brains and no smarts.

Jvette on July 22, 2010 at 10:45 AM

Very true. I was weak at the moment, couldn’t resist, and apologize. Henry Waxman, as said above, well I just can’t let that go by. It’s not just that he looks like a rat (will all due apologies to actual rats) it’s that when he’s in power he has that power loving smirk on his face that says “this is one rat that loves giving the business to the other side.” Absolutely no humility and a love of power.
