Video: Internet nerds have a fee-vah and the only prescription is the new “Tron” trailer
posted at 7:41 pm on July 22, 2010 by Allahpundit
It dropped this afternoon at Comic-Con and, hours later, the aftershocks continue. Twitter’s freaking out and Entertainment Weekly’s freaking out and yet … I’m unmoved. It’s fine, don’t get me wrong, but between the geeky provenance, the stellar F/X and purty, purty Olivia Wilde, this should be pure candy for any self-respecting beta male. What am I missing here? I know I’m dorky enough to enjoy this.

It’s creepy seeing Jeff Bridges look that young.

I didn’t like the original ‘Tron’.
I’m a nerd-but one that likes history rather than sci-fi.
annoyinglittletwerp on July 22, 2010 at 7:44 PM
Huh? The trailer I saw months ago was wayyyyyy better…

Hollywood still loves repeats. End of line.
William Amos on July 22, 2010 at 7:48 PM
Cheesiness Allah.. Pure unadulterated CHEESY!
upinak on July 22, 2010 at 7:48 PM
Looking at the color schemes, it looks like Mr Bridges will be playing both God and Satan in the movie…

Me too. I fear we’ve been duped.
Bee on July 22, 2010 at 7:49 PM
I need a new movie. I’ve worn out my last two favorites, but Tron isn’t it.
Skandia Recluse on July 22, 2010 at 7:49 PM
I remember old school TRON and the video game, IMO, sucked. I could never get beyond the first level or couldn’t understand the bikes but it was a turnoff. The movie was a loser too and I predict this one will follow suit.
Im disappointed with the CPT America predictions though I’m looking forward to it. I loved Captain America.

Looks Netflix-able.

LurkerDood on July 22, 2010 at 7:54 PM
The only parts I liked of the original were the ones that took place in cyberspace. The real world, not so much. The characters were kind of flat.
If this one avoids the usual liberal stereotypes about the world (big business bad, America bad, single parenthood preferable, illicit sex preferable to marriage and family, everyone uses language that would make a drunken sailor blush) then it might be good. If not…meh. I’ll stick with Pixar films.
theotherone on July 22, 2010 at 7:54 PM
Well, that’s two and a half minutes I won’t get back.
BKeyser on July 22, 2010 at 7:54 PM
Yawn! I guess all we can expect from Hollywood…until Bollywood takes them over, is remakes of 28 year old nerd films and lefty propaganda. Well, at least there is Pixar.
AUINSC on July 22, 2010 at 7:54 PM
Seriously, has there been an decent original movie out of Hollywood in the past decade?
I movie looks better than the first one, but thats not saying much.
Vigilante on July 22, 2010 at 7:55 PM
Plot? A reason to care about the characters? Etc? It could be great, but you can’t tell from the preview. The reason you are not sure of you dig it is because from all we have seen, all they did was Matrix-up Tron with the latest CGI-fu.
It’s Avatar with programs instead of aliens fighting over a computer system instead of Pandora.
Meh.
alexwest on July 22, 2010 at 7:55 PM
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
blatantblue on July 22, 2010 at 7:55 PM
rearrange letters in TRON and get ROT-N…or TORN rhymes with PRON or something…
ted c on July 22, 2010 at 7:57 PM
Dude, with all due respect for the hotness – that’s a reason to search google images, not drive to a movie theater.
alexwest on July 22, 2010 at 7:57 PM
Nice find Asher but how about the original, original trailer – since we’re going retro.

Been there done that
William Amos on July 22, 2010 at 8:03 PM
Okay, I misunderstood, I thought this was the first available trailer, obviously I saw a different one. Obviously neither are/were memorable enough.

Pac Man
William Amos on July 22, 2010 at 8:05 PM
Even a bad movie can provide a better trailer than that. I blame the trailer editors more than the actual movie, for now. All it inspires me to do is google image search Olivia Wilde.
exception on July 22, 2010 at 8:05 PM
I think I enjoyed the first trailer a lot more… That being said, I’m still going to celebrate my 28th birthday by going to see it in IMAX… :-D
Yes, I’m a fanboy.

Meh! pass
Vntnrse on July 22, 2010 at 8:08 PM
It’s probably gonna suck out loud….We got fanboys in here arguing over the best trailer……of the same movie….
BigWyo on July 22, 2010 at 8:11 PM
Were they not suppose to remake “red Dawn” ? The movie about a communist take over of America in 2008 ?
Nah never could happen via an invasion would have to be an inside job.
William Amos on July 22, 2010 at 8:12 PM
I was working at Intel when the original came out and saw it with a bunch of other bonafide geeks. We all agreed it sucked, dully, as did the arcade game.

I liked the original Tron movie. I suspect I’ll like the new one too.
jeanie on July 22, 2010 at 8:14 PM

JetBoy on July 22, 2010 at 8:14 PM
Might have to explain what “Tron” is to blatantblue and Lorien. They have been watching the X rated version “Pron”.
William Amos on July 22, 2010 at 8:17 PM
I`m a sucker for big flashy sci-fi movies. :)
ThePrez on July 22, 2010 at 8:17 PM
One of the requirements of a trailer is that I at least have to know somewhat what the movie is about. If I can’t figure out what it’s about, it doesn’t matter if it’s good or probably in this case sucky. From the above comments, sounds like a remake. All fine and good but for those who don’t know, it needs to be explained.
TimTebowSavesAmerica on July 22, 2010 at 8:19 PM
Olivia Wilde is so frickin slammin
blatantblue on July 22, 2010 at 8:20 PM
I had the unfortunate experience of seeing Tron as a child.
And pr0n, too.
blatantblue on July 22, 2010 at 8:21 PM
I agree, provided she says nothing political.
ThePrez on July 22, 2010 at 8:22 PM
Olivia Wilde has always come off as a major b!tch to me. I’ll still see the movie though. It does look pretty awesome.

I think an addendum to Godwin’s Law needs to be written.

True geeks
Hmmm! Is there an age and gender criteria for ‘geek’? I only ask because I really liked the original movie and would rather enjoy thinking of myself as a ‘geek’. My contemporaries would be impressed.
jeanie on July 22, 2010 at 8:25 PM
Geek is a state of mind.
blatantblue on July 22, 2010 at 8:26 PM
Damn it……. You`re right.
ThePrez on July 22, 2010 at 8:27 PM
Yeah…I agree with Allah that this trailer lacked something. The first was better. I’ll watch Tron either way. It was always a favorite of mine when I was younger.
RAB on July 22, 2010 at 8:28 PM
It’s not a remake…it’s a continuation. When the first one came out it kinda sucked..wasn’t bad…but the movie technology wasn’t up to the story.
Jesus…now I’m sounding like the fanboy….gah!!!
BigWyo on July 22, 2010 at 8:28 PM
The original was not in the same class as other 1982 sci-fi releases (Wrath of Khan, Blade Runner, and The Thing) but I liked it then and I’d bet I’ll like this one too.
roy_batty on July 22, 2010 at 8:29 PM
A must wait, for NetFlix.
Mojave Mark on July 22, 2010 at 8:29 PM
Interesting. Can you explain in more detail?
jeanie on July 22, 2010 at 8:30 PM
I kinda like this one because it shows who the ‘Not anymore’ guy is from the first one…
Or at least that’s it’s a Jeff Bridges clone dude or something…

roy_batty on July 22, 2010 at 8:37 PM
Yeah…that was kind of cool to see whats going on.
Maybe it was because they didn’t really show anything new in the way of the Tron world. Its stuff I’ve seen in the previous movie so it didn’t push my ‘whoa!’ button.
RAB on July 22, 2010 at 8:37 PM
The 80′s video game looked better than this remade movie.

I’m confused. Didn’t AP say this trailer just came out today at Comiccon? I saw this trailer last week as a preview before watching Inception. Go figure.

How did you like Inception?
I loved it. I thought it was incredible.

Unimpressed. Sci-Fi has been going downhill since Blade Runner.

I always wanted to buy the TRON dvd but was too ashamed to be typecast as an ubergeek.
That trailer rocked btw…

I miss Zork! And similar games: Trinity, Leather Goddesses of Phobos…
Speaking of Zork, whatever happened to the Grue who used to post here? He ended most every post with **eats**. It cracked me up. :-) I miss him, too!

As for why people would be freaking out… not sure, although I am a huge fan of the original.
strictnein on July 22, 2010 at 9:31 PM
Loved that one
blatantblue on July 22, 2010 at 9:32 PM
Agreed. It was pretty good. We’ll see if it stands the test of time. Like all the best Sci Fi it takes a different view of things and runs with it. It’s about the story not the special effects. I like a movie I’m still figuring out a couple days later.
tommyboy on July 22, 2010 at 9:35 PM
It is not a remake. Anyone who has seen TRON would know that. It is a sequel.
I had no trouble understanding the trailer. It appears that the world Flynn saved in the original TRON has advanced, but that there’s trouble in paradise and Flynn’s son is drawn into that world looking for his missing father. He’ll have to find his dad and save the world of TRON. A basic action-fantasy plot.
I may actually have to part with the bucks to visit the local IMAX come December. The advances in CGI should make this movie a fun ride as long as Disney avoids playing preacher.
AP: Tron is techno-fantasy, not sci-fi. (Yes, I am a bit AR. Why do you ask?)

ted c on July 22, 2010 at 9:49 PM
I loved the original. Had some of the best directed action sequences ever. Highly underrated.
Really looking forward to this. Most of it looks good, but I have to say, that CG Jeff Bridges looks really weird. If it’s supposed to look natural, it ain’t cuttin’ it. That’s a shame.
Dongemaharu on July 22, 2010 at 9:52 PM
Damn. At least I had my own 64.
Anyone remember these:
Raid Over Moscow
Death in the Caribbean
Impossible Mission (“Destroy him, my robots!”)
CurtZHP on July 22, 2010 at 9:54 PM
I’m with you. Pixar is the best, hands down. As for Tron, I’ll wait for the reviews before I make a decision. Me likes the trailers, but that means diddly squat.
Splashman on July 22, 2010 at 10:01 PM
Was that Buzz Lightyear as a discfighter in the intro?
MechEng5by5 on July 22, 2010 at 10:03 PM
I’m old enough to recognize the original Star Wars background familial storyline: Son pitted against father: in the Return of the Jedi, with Luke Skywalker fighting Darth Vader, who it turns out was his real father.
So the script writer/s for the Tron sequel obviously hijacked that storyline. It looks like the Jeff Bridges twisted verstion of the “father” dwells on the “dark side” as well. The only things missing are the light sabers and the death star.
KendraWilder on July 22, 2010 at 10:17 PM
Well, if you like Pixar, then you may be happy to know they were consulted on the movie to punch up the story/characters. That’s why it’s coming out late.
oddjob1138 on July 22, 2010 at 10:19 PM
Lotta cynicism here today – the funny thing is, I hate Hollywood, but I liked the original Tron, the most recent video game incarnation (which this movie seems to follow on from), and these trailers.
PS in the Tron 2.0 video game (why they can’t use that name for the movie), it’s Alan Bradley’s son Jethro that’s sucked into the machine and has to help rescue his father who’s been kidnapped in real life. He has a female (program) companion called Mercury, made by Bradley.
The game was a little buggy but had an awesome “look” and style, and a the story wasn’t too disappointing (most action games have annoying storylines, even the good ones).
It looks like the new movie has Flynn’s son trying to find Flynn with a female program as a companion. It’s nice to see Boxleitner again too, though he seems to have a small role.
As I say, I’m sure as heck gonna see it, hopefully there won’t be anything much to be disappointed about.
Merovign on July 22, 2010 at 10:43 PM
PS for complete trivia buffs, I don’t think Disney considers the Tron 2.0 game to be official story, but Jethro was the son of Alan and Laura from the original movie, and Laura was dead but part of her personality from a previous digitization was saved by Alan and helped Jethro during the game.
The actress is not in the movie, so it looks like that “character” is not either.
I became such a geek because of that movie. Mind you I was a kid when I saw it, but I’ve seen it since and still enjoyed it, even though Jeff Bridges was a complete slobbering puppy dog through most of it. That was kind of a Disney thing.
Remember when Kurt Russel was a Disney star? :)
