Video: Internet nerds have a fee-vah and the only prescription is the new “Tron” trailer

posted at 7:41 pm on July 22, 2010 by Allahpundit

It dropped this afternoon at Comic-Con and, hours later, the aftershocks continue. Twitter’s freaking out and Entertainment Weekly’s freaking out and yet … I’m unmoved. It’s fine, don’t get me wrong, but between the geeky provenance, the stellar F/X and purty, purty Olivia Wilde, this should be pure candy for any self-respecting beta male. What am I missing here? I know I’m dorky enough to enjoy this.

That was an awful trailer. My sound card is out, and you can really see how bad it was without the music and words.

All the action they chose for it was slow-mo (can slow-mo action accurately be described as action?), and even when the action picked up, it inexplicably froze again to go in micro-slow motion (which I know can’t be described as action!).

If they wanted to choose scenes with the goal of boring the c&^% out of anyone watching, congratulations! They did it!

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT

Actually, the Jeff Bridges as God & Satan metaphor is an apt one. Flynn created something (I think one treatment said it was a variant of the CLU program from the first movie) that was supposed to revolutionize computer networking, and he lost control. Now that something threatens the worldwide computer network (which was in its relative infancy in 1982 when the first movie came out) and Sam has to convince his father, who has been living as a digital program in the network, to fight to save it.

Could be wrong, but at the risk of spoiling somewhat, that’s what I’ve gathered so far from all available sources of information.

I had tingles running up and down my leg… Think we can get Chris Matthews and Keith Olberman to duke it out Tron style. It would be in slow mo.

Fellow old-ageing techies, confirm or deny:

“Tron” comes from the command in the computer language BASIC that turned on debug tracing. TRON is TRace ON.

When completed, you’d type TROFF.

How about making them battle upside down?

Would be different and the loser wouldn’t be much different than before anyway….headless.

Where’s the Scott Pilgrim love? This is doo doo.

Hmmm.

@ AP

What are you missing?

“Users are Gods”

Pretty pathetic for a **God**.

Frankly I was expecting more of a Matrix-Neo sort of thing where the kid, from his father’s stories, understands that as a User he has the power of destruction and creation. A walking avatar of Shiva in their world where the only constraint is the desire to not destroy it all before finding his father.

Plus the movie is too much constrained by the first one. The discs? Lightcycles?

You are correct, sir.

Deny..

the name comes from a demo that the creators of Tron made to showcase their computer animation. They show it on the making of documentary for the tron dvd.

The Demo was an elecTRONic warrior that throws a disc that glows and becomes the logo for the company.

Hated the original, but this looks pretty fun

Been there, done that…

Was waiting for Buzz Lightyear to make a cameo appearance.

Because “Robotech” is just a mangling of an anime called “Macros” (with “Army of the Southern Cross” and “Mos Pieta” as seasons 2 and 3).
Now, if you wanted to do Macros, that would be something else.

One thing that seems missing is a solid heavy. Not sure if I buy the Bridges-clone in that role if that is indeed his role. Perhaps that character hasn’t been revealed yet? David Warner was good in that spot as Sark. I’d suggest Michael Ironside, Robert Patrick, or Sean Bean for this one.

The orig was a bit of effort to watch as I remember it… But the fact that it was different made it good enough to be worth it. This will need to be an awesome story in the telling to over come the darkness and just plain weird feel that the trailer has…

Looks about as good as the recent Speedracer remake. In other words, not that good.
