Sherrod: I want to talk to Obama; Update: Obama phones Sherrod, asks her to take new USDA job

posted at 1:00 pm on July 22, 2010 by Allahpundit

She doesn’t want an apology, just a little telephonic beer-summit on race. I’m sure he’ll agree to it, too. The One does, famously, like to remain above the fray on racial clusterfarks — that is, when he isn’t instigating them — but he needs to make this go away and granting Sherrod her wish is the quickest way to do that. In fact, given that she sounds disinclined to accept Vilsack’s new job offer for the understandable reason that she doesn’t want the headache of being the “race czar” or whatever at Agriculture, a direct appeal from the throne might be the only way to get her to accept. The media wants a happy ending here, champ. Make it happen.

Speaking of happy endings, kudos to Howard Kurtz (for once) for gently reminding the media that it wasn’t, in fact, some sort of on-air pogrom at Fox News that pressured Vilsack into canning her. A source at Fox actually told me on Monday that they’d been instructed not to mention the Sherrod clip on air until the network had time to check into it. I didn’t mention that in any posts because I had no evidence that it was true, but now the LA Times confirms that it is:

Michael Clemente, senior vice president of news editorial, said the network’s news programs reported the story with caution. “When I heard about this Monday morning and saw it on Breitbart’s website, I said, ‘OK, could be a story, let’s check it out,’ ” Clemente said. “We did the normal fact-finding we would do on any story.”

At an afternoon editorial meeting Monday, Clemente urged the staff to first get the facts and obtain comment from Sherrod before going on air, according to internal notes from the meeting that were provided to The Times. “Let’s make sure we do this right,” he said.

Sherrod ended up resigning Monday afternoon, hours before O’Reilly broke the story on his show. The first reported piece on Fox News, by correspondent James Rosen, aired on Tuesday morning, and included a second video clip that added context to Sherrod’s comments.

Presumably they felt it was safe to run on O’Reilly once Sherrod was fired on the theory that the USDA must have seen the full tape before letting her go. Oops. Exit question: Is Sherrod week in the blogosphere finally over?

Update: Ask and ye shall receive.

Update: As expected, The One asked her to accept Vilsack’s job offer.

Is seven minutes long enough for a thoughtful conversation on race?

President Obama early this afternoon phoned Shirley Sherrod, expressing regret to the former Agriculture Department official whose forced resignation has caused the administration a great deal of embarrassment.

The president and Sherrod spoke from 12:35 pm ET until 12:42, and the president emphasized that Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack “was sincere in his apology” Wednesday, an official White House statement said, as well as in his larger mission to end discrimination at the department.

What SNAFUishness! This is an utter mess. So, why is Obama calling her? To schmooze? To tell her to STFU and stop saying that he’s not down with the struggle like she said on the Today show or GMA?

ted c on July 22, 2010 at 1:41 PM

I learned a few things from this charade:

1. None of this would have happened if the NAACP wouldn’t have painted the tea party as rascist with a broad brush.

2. Sherrod may have wrongly been fired for this incident.

3. From listening to her comments in the full video, I came to the conclusion she is a rascist and/or leans toward being a socialist.

4. Why does she need a job? She bilked the USDA playing the race card to win 13 million dollars in an EEO complaint.

5. The non-news agency Fox must have some credibility with the Obama administration since they reacted so quickly for fear they were going to air the story.

6. The results would have been far different had a white person said similar words to a white audience.

7. Race is only brought up by the liberals and the Obama administration has used race more than any other administration since the civil rights act was passed. Thanks Obama.

iamsaved on July 22, 2010 at 1:42 PM

She will be a Czar of some sort by next week.

Obama would never make the call if the person was white.

Obama must spend lots of time watching TV. (Of all the problems going on in the world, hard to believe any President would get involved with this.)

Obama only made this call (and what ever is to follow) because he was afraid if he did not it would hurt his standing with his base voters (all 99% of blacks).

BOR promised more on Sherrod tonight, saying there was a lot of interesting stuff in this case. He’s walking an intersting tightrope, or maybe figuring this will boost his ratings in the last week of the Nielsen period.

As expected, The One asked her to accept Vilsack’s job offer.

Man, the Administration is so focused on saving her job. I just wish they cared half as much for the other 30m unemployed or underemployed Americans.

Man, I hope Obama and Congress now don’t decide they need to spend another $863 billion to save Shirley Sherrod’s job.

YYZ on July 22, 2010 at 1:34 PM

OK, answer me this. Shirley and her husband and their group won a settlement for black farmers that then grew to include far more black farmers than even exist in the state of GA. The same woman’s father was killed, allegedly by a white guy who Mrs. Sherrod knows the identity of and the murderer was never charged. Seems to me that if I knew who killed my father I would want that person punished. It sure seems easier than suing the government for farmers but maybe not.
If suing the government for more farmers than exist in GA is easier than getting justice for her dad, there is a story there too.

ORconservative on July 22, 2010 at 1:45 PM

The only reason they’re offering her the job is to keep her inside pi$$ing out than from the outside pi$$ing in. It’s a Hillary strategy redux IMO.

That is true.

I explain it to black people like this:
“Do you know a white person that you say ‘Aww so and so is black, you know the way they did with Bill Clinton?”

“Yeah”

“Well why do you say that?

“You know Mike is like ‘this,’ he listens to this music he goes to our school, we live in the same neighborhood”

“So if Mike, like Obama went to the best private school in the state, didn’t live in your neighborhood, went to Columbia and then Harvard. Would he still ‘be black’?”

Then they get where I’m coming from. It is interesting all my black female friends say “Well he married a black woman!” Heh

Eren on July 22, 2010 at 1:56 PM

This is ridiculous. Honestly the POTUS has been reduced to a TV drama.

Bush to a fault would not respond to criticism and allowed himself to be completely lambasted in the media. Obama is the polar opposite. This administration is always reacting. Never commanding. Always covering something, some angle, its a public relations adventure on a daily basis. Ridiculous. I disliked Bush’s non-response but I’m beginning to appreciate it. The Obama administration would be wise to remember thaT familiarity breeds contempt.

Theworldisnotenough on July 22, 2010 at 1:35 PM

EXCELLENT comment. I’ve been thinking along those lines myself. When is Mr. Drama Queen in Chief going to start seriously dealing with the issues our country faces instead of wasting time running around the country giving speeches (and spending millions of our tax dollars) and sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong?

scalleywag on July 22, 2010 at 1:56 PM

The Department of Agriculture acted…stupidly?

What is missed is that Sherrod was fired/compelled to resign long before anyone in the Administration knew all the facts. Not like this sort of jumping to conclusions before the facts were made clear has ever happened in this Administration, right?

Sherrod wants to sue Breitbart. Breitbart didn’t fire her. Vilsack did…as a Cabinet member of this Administration. Her ire should be directed and focused on the actual culprits…but that’d be the Obama Administration.

Odds of that happening?

Fox News source = TV’s Andy Levy??

Surely we won’t hear about Shirley again until her lawsuit is settled.

chief on July 22, 2010 at 1:58 PM

So many questions. So Shirley appears to have an awakening of sorts. Set aside questions of the honesty of that awakening, and let’s ask, -how long was she on the job and damaging white people through her racism before the awakening?

Second, what about this dead father business? Was her father shot by a white policeman in the commission of a crime or was he lynched by a white man? There’s a lot of space between those two extremes. Anyone have the history on this?

And to promise her that he would be abridging Fox’s and Breitbart’s freedom of speech, if in no other way, at least with his diversity czars.

And oh, BTW, wasn’t it her own words that convicted her in the first place, didn’t she admit she didn’t do all she could have to help an uppity White farmer (was she showing off for an NAACP audience) and how many times has an out of context video clip put a Conservative out of business?
A lot, Trent Lott, Rush Limbaugh come to mind.

On NBC with Meredith this morning she complained about the discrimination at USDA against every ethnicity but strangely left out White people, reformed racist? Not in that clip.

And not to mention, has the administration’s actions in firing Ms Sherrod now confirmed that Blacks can be racist after all, not just the one unprotected class?

memomachine on July 22, 2010 at 3:03 PM

Jeff G is spot on with this.

Mr. Joe on July 22, 2010 at 3:06 PM

At the very least, organizations such as the NAACP are going to think long and hard before accusing the Tea Party of being racist. They now know that we bite back – for most bullies, that is enough to keep them at bay.

What I saw mentioned early on in this whole debacle was the speed with which the NAACP condemned Ms. Sherrod’s actions, combined with the speed of her dismissal from her job. That tells me that people on that side of the issue KNOW that black racism exists, and they were TERRIFIED that more might come out. They HAD to distance themselves from that ASAP.

We’ve got them looking over their shoulders now, running away as fast as they can go. Let’s keep it that way – people with a clear conscience don’t have anything to hide.

And isn’t it interesting that Mr. Obama had 7 minutes available to talk with Ms. Sherrod – a private citizen – just days after this all went down, yet he only had 20 minutes to spare for General McChrystal – the leader of the Afghanistan campaign at the time – 8 MONTHS after he took office?

But please, make the attempt at Suing Breibart, put a spotlight on the fact that you did say those things and NAACP not only cheered at your racist talk but they had a huge hand in your getting canned byt not even reviewing the tape. Same goes for WH.

No one really needs to see more to know of the incompetance of the WH and NAACP, your own racism from years ago as well as NAACP and Obama’s racism. I’m sure if she actually tried to sue, they’d find her and rule it an accidental overdose of asparin.
