Facebook yanks Palin post after lefties complain, then apologizes

posted at 7:05 pm on July 22, 2010 by Allahpundit

I’m surprised and not surprised. Not surprised because using “flagging” widgets on social media behemoths like YouTube to silence one’s ideological opponents has been happening for years. Surprised because the people responsible for this can’t seriously have believed that Facebook would pull the plug on a post written by the one person who, more than any other, has made FB politically relevant. It’d be like YouTube yanking an Obama video.

Sarah Palin’s attack on plans to build a mosque two blocks from the site of the World Trade Center vanished from Facebook amid an online campaign to brand it “hate speech.”

Neither Facebook nor Palin’s camp was immediately sure what happened, but automated systems for reporting abuse have been used effectively in the past to take aim at political speech. Palin’s note now contains a footnote saying the original was “somehow unintentionally deleted by mistake or technical glitch.”

They looked into it and a Facebook spokesman responded:

“The note in question did not violate our content standards but was removed by an automated system. We’re always working to improve our processes and we apologize for any inconvenience this caused.”

She’s influential enough to have survived the sabotage attempt. Not everyone is. Below, as a treat for HA newbies and veterans alike, two Vents on this very subject from fall 2006. Did you know, newbies, that videos used to run in the space now occupied by Headlines? True story.

I used to use it when setting up access points to test the range of the wireless signal. If you could watch Michelle with no jumps and starts it was good to go.

Does anyone have the link to the Conservative Youtubers Group on Youtube? They apparently have yanked the group, I tried to find it, but could not.

This is not about ‘lefties’!

It is about CAIR.

Has anyone else noticed how CAIR now tries to pretend Islam is a race? This attack is typical of the latest Islamic attempts to destroy western civilization. Which is exactly why they want a monument to the killers as close to the scene of the crime as possible.

Sure, the charge of racism unfortunately still has some shock value behind it though it is quickly losing effect. The lefties try to make muslim a race, as well as ‘illegal alien’.

Bring back the ‘Vents’.

MKH should be required to do a peeps video every year around Easter.

To any/all Politico people, new or otherwise — that Malkin op-ed video about YouTube inexplicable bannings of content is the same one deployed against commenters at Politico.

Comments by Conservatives (anyone not Liberal) on the site get attacked by Liberals who flag them (“report abuse” or “report comment”) and then the comments get deleted, with a brief email message announcing such that simply says the comment was removed due to “violation of terms” etc.

Yet there’s no identification of WHAT “terms” were “violated” nor of which comment, specifically, was removed. If you write to Politico, they don’t respond.

They just ban comments that are by anyone but the Left, which the Left sets upon for that purpose: to get them yanked because they don’t represent Leftwing views.

Users there I know have, themselves, had their entire accounts banned and they re-register later but announce they are “Democrats” and they then do not get banned. Their opinions remain the same in comments, but they’ve simply tagged themselves as Democrats (which they aren’t, in reality, but they label their accounts as such) and then experience user bliss ongoing at the site, regardless of what they write in comments.

So it’s not just YouTube or Facebook or other sites — another site I’d like to include in this complaint is Yahoo.

They have recently reinstated comment sections at the foot of news articles they publish, and, their comments sections are routinely edited to remove numerous, numerous Conservative (or, “not Leftwing”) comments. You can’t get an explanation from Yahoo just as you can’t from Politico, they simply direct readers to “terms of service” which no one can ever identify as to being violated, yet their comments get yanked.

At Yahoo, even, the editing takes place right before your eyes. Pages upon pages of comments that contain a discussion in which a Conservative or even a “not Liberal” perspective is aired, get removed as you try to read them.

The Muslim community is angry that four extremely popular Islamic pages were removed from the site and the letter warns that unless its demands are met Facebook’s Muslim users will move to an Islamic alternative.

There’s SO many jokes that can be made with that one.

teke184 on July 22, 2010 at 7:13 PM

I know, I laughed aloud at that, too…

So, hey, Muslims, ALRIGGHTY THEN, O.K., great plan there, so move to “a Islamic alternative.”

“The note in question did not violate our content standards but was removed by an automated system.”

Yes, “an automated system which was designed to remove content that we disapprove of”.

bloviator on July 23, 2010 at 8:07 AM

Yes, exactly. How that’s worded suggests Facebook is controlled by robots who no human ever programmed, err, sumthin’.

I used to look forward to those videos like I look forward to the sunrise. I for one would love to see new ones once in a while. They were great, and there should definitely be an archived section for those. especially the one where Michelle illustrates the link between the illegal immigrants and the 9/11 hijackers. That video had me pissed off for 3 months. On the other side of the coin the one with Michelle on the trampoline had me smiling for around three months :0)

Joey1974 on July 23, 2010 at 8:44 AM

Why must you all remind me of the traumatic event of Bethany’s abrupt and unexplained exit?!

Have you no consideration for the broken hearted?

geckomon on July 23, 2010 at 9:03 AM

Well…there is nothing to prevent large groups of “conservatives” from registering on the sites (even if you have to register as a “Demonrat”) and use the same guerrilla warfare tactics to get left-wing comments yanked. All it takes is a critical mass AND then — mass deletions by the autocoding.

This will prompt the site owners to change the policy if they want to have comments at all — and they apparently do — the result will be that conservative comments are no longer banned.

QUESTION!!

I am a senior and not really sharp on all rhe new ins and outs of new technology, I save a lot of articles I read ( one was on Obama’s transition team which contained the name of Nidal Hasan, the Ft.Hood Shooter, saved last year, went in last week to look at it again the format was the same but his name was gone??? how do they do that?

I have had my provider for several years and lately when I try to bring up conservative websites or articles I get a lot of website not available.
What am I doing wrong.
