Video: Gibbs apologizes to Sherrod

posted at 4:19 pm on July 21, 2010 by Allahpundit

Assuming she hasn’t yet formally been offered her job back, consider this an official guarantee that she will be. (Whether she wants it back is a another matter.) Question: When was the last time a story blew up this forcefully in the faces of people on both sides? Conservative media’s been embarrassed (even John Boehner’s criticizing Breitbart’s decision to run a partial clip), the NAACP’s been embarrassed, and of course Obama’s been embarrassed via an unforced error which the left is in no mood to forgive.

On Wednesday, liberals expressed fury that Sherrod hadn’t immediately been re-hired and lamented how the same president who broke so many conventional rules as a candidate was now bowing to the same forces on the right that have tormented Democrats for years.

“Now that the full video is out there and Sherrod’s version of events is vindicated, Obama looks foolish, impulsive and reactive,” said Jane Hamsher, a prominent liberal blogger and frequent Obama critics. “And he has only empowered Breitbart, who will continue to employ the same tactics until someone stands up to him. You would hope the President of the United States could manage that.”

“They desperately want to be liked by the right, and this pathological need to ingratiate themselves with people who want to destroy them lead them to make stupid move after stupid move,” complained Markos Moulitsas, who runs the influential Daily Kos blog

Said the Nation’s Ari Melber: “Obama’s team is right to condemn the sensationalism of 24-7 news, but they play right into the problem by rushing to judgment and ditching people stamped controversial by their opponents. We live in a world where anyone can be Breitbarted — the question isn’t whether you can be clipped out of context, or have your life’s work overshadowed by a day’s worth of links.”

Kos’s claim that Obama is trying to ingratiate himself with conservatives is insane, of course. After ObamaCare, there’s virtually nothing The One could do to redeem himself in the eyes of the right and everyone knows it. (That’s one of the reasons for all the “party of no” messaging, to convince voters that the GOP’s recalcitrance is irreparable and therefore the left’s entitled to abandon bipartisanship and ram stuff through.) As such, firing some unknown USDA employee in response to a Breitbart video wouldn’t make the barest blip in his favorables among conservatives. The real reason they moved so quickly against Sherrod is because of their understandable sensitivity to racial politics, especially after the “beer summit” fiasco and at a moment when the DOJ’s dealing with accusations of bias via the Black Panthers case. That’s why Gibbs’s deputy, Jim Messina, reportedly spent yesterday morning congratulating the WH press team for having moved so quickly against Sherrod. And of course the real reason liberals are angry with him isn’t because Obama’s cuddling up to conservatives or whatever but because he’s blown a golden opportunity to bludgeon the left’s enemies in conservative media. Had the White House held back until the full tape came out, they could have launched a full media offensive against the credibility of righty blogs. As it is, Gibbs is left apologizing for pretty much everyone. What a whiff.

Here’s the clip. CNN was interviewing Sherrod when the briefing again and used the opportunity to run a split screen of her watching Gibbs grovel. We’ve got that clip coming. In fact, Tapper, who enjoys making Gibbsy squirm, actually felt compelled to tell him that Sherrod was watching, which is just all kinds of awesome. Exit question via Ace: If, as the White House insisted yesterday, the order to fire Sherrod came from Vilsack and not from them, why did Messina insist on congratulating his team?

Somewhere, Hillary Clinton chuckles softly…and nods her head…”yes,” she says, “yes.” And then she smiles.

Did she give less help to the farmer because he was white? Yes.

Did she take great pride in the fact she used her power to screw a white person? Yes.

Did the audience lap it all up? Yes.

I fail to see why she deserves her job back.

Isn’t it amazing to see people so willing to walk away from human freedom and liberty the likes of which this planet has never seen before the creation of America. It just boggles the mind how people can follow progressive’s right off the cliff into socialism where we have centuries of human suppression on record and in the books.

Somehow it will work this time despite the fact that is has failed throughout history. Amazing, but it is what we are up against if we are to keep America and the dream alive and well for our youth. Jimbo, you should be ashamed.

Keemo on July 21, 2010 at 5:41 PM

Exactly. I don’t know where people are getting the idea that she turns away from her racist outlook. She’s basically saying “It’s not about black vs white, well it is, but it’s also about the haves vs. have nots.”

In fact she says almost those exact words at one point in the video. The full video might add a bit more nuance but it still shows she’s clearly racist.

Kronos on July 21, 2010 at 5:31 PM

The full video shows that she WAS a racist, but saw the light. The story comes up around the 18 minute mark. The change in her attitude comes at around the 20:48. It’s not the best redemptive story, but she does try to help people regardless of color. She also tells an interesting story about indentured servants, white and black.

hawksruleva on July 21, 2010 at 5:41 PM

The left will spin this as though he intentionally took the clip out of context.

UltimateBob on July 21, 2010 at 4:51 PM

…tempted to retort, “who cares”!

Most of us realize that’s what the Left will resort to — they have nothing else to resort to, so they’ll drum on tissue paper excuses and taunts, JUST LIKE THEY ALWAYS DO.

At this point, what the nation needs is a “Dampening Field Against Leftwing Angst” and just start tuning it out. The Left will find some “possible” loop and they will blow their nose all the way through it.

Meanwhile, the Left attempts to get the focus off the Left’s amorality or corruption or both and gin-up (“agitate”) emotional foaming among a population in which there are just enough people who don’t really know WHAT occured that they’ll rely instead of being agitated emotionally and then whatever point was originally made by others is lost among the general angst the Left foments.

Breitbart’s portion of clip shown revealed an audience eager to snicker, lend humming-hawing approval of, snittering away in support of gross racism by Shirley from the podium.

When Shirley began revising her racism to migrate into advocating for Marxism (“class warfare”), the audience (NAACP Members) fell silent: they were there to celebrate anti-White racism.

So Shirley gave them something to second-guess about, but at the essence was racism-come-Marxism-come-racism (*) and that’s what the portion Breitbart showed revealed.

(*) racism-come-Marxism-come-racism…

Meaning, what occured in the portion of the taped speech Breitbart showed — as later expanded upon by viewing more of that taped speech — was that ultimately, the “anti-Whiteman” prejudice or racism of the NAACP remained. One can allude to “class warfare” among Black Nationalists and they’ll all UNDERSTAND that the target remains “the Whiteman” who they associate with “having things” that they “stole” or whatever else is wretched negative stereotypical to Black Nationalism (and other racists among other ethnicities) about “White poeple”.

So though Shirley migrated her rationalizations for her aberrant — if not primitive — presumptions into one of class warfare, she ultimately simply provided a “new tag” to the NAACP, racist audience to whom she was speaking: “now maintain your aberrant, racist presumptions in economic terms.”

This is what happens when you react rather than looking within. NAACP isn’t racist, nor is the tea party. There are, however, racists in both organization. The tea partiers, thinking they were cute, tried to redirect the accusation back at them and ended up look like buffoons. Mark Williams (I think that’s his name) came out looking most foolish in this whole fiasco.

If you’re going to go at NAACP, don’t attack them with the same lies they attack you with. Third, learn what the heck racism is. They are racist simply because they’re black and liberal.

Did anyone else here listen to Vilsack’s speech from about a half-hour ago today? He leaked reference to the motivation he’s experiencing as to “racist suits by Blacks, Hispanics and other minorities” against his agency.

It seems to be a popular meal ticket for many, to claim that when or if you don’t get federal dolluhhrrs, you’re being “discriminated against” and boy-howdy, is Hugo Chavez proud of those who make those claims.

-Brietbart pretty clearly knew what O’Keefe was going to do.
And Breitbart could have waited and tried to get the full video before he posted his story. From what I read, he went to his original source to try to get the full tape, rather than going to the NAACP and telling them that he planned to run the story but wanted to see the full tape first.

Jimbo3 on July 21, 2010 at 5:48 PM

When I made that commitment, I wasn’t making that commitment to black people — and to black people only.

The first time I was faced with having to help a white farmer save his farm, he — he took a long time talking, but he was trying to show me he was superior to me. I know what he was doing. But he had come to me for help. What he didn’t know while he was taking all that time trying to show me he was superior to me, was I was trying to decide just how much help I was going to give him.

That’s when it was revealed to me that, ya’ll, it’s about poor versus those who have, and not so much about white — it is about white and black, but it’s not — you know, it opened my eyes, ’cause I took him to one of his own and I put him in his hand, and felt okay, I’ve done my job.

Like I told you, God helped me to see that it’s not just about black people — it’s about poor people.

This is not someone who has abandoned her racism, just someone who has added class warfare into the vile mix.

Basically you’re offended when certain people are called racist by other certain people. For as much as people mock the left’s “white guilt” conservatives sure do seem to be struggling for some kind of acceptance or softened perception about their racial-views and behavior. Racial-vindication is like the Holy Grail for conservatives. Even the non-believers are searching for it.

Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, calls the NAACP out on their racial hypocrisy:

“NAACP, you’re still supporting Planned Parenthood, which is one of the most racist organizations in America today, and they have proven that over and over,” she points out.

“Their founder [Margaret Sanger] certainly thought that black people were like human weeds that needed to be exterminated. So [the NAACP's] support of Planned Parenthood is just saying that they are ready to renounce racism when it’s inconvenient to them but to support racism when it’s beneficial to them,” King adds.

Standing aside from all the finger-pointing, wouldn’t it be nice if we could use this incident & others to say that maybe it’s time to just stop it? We do have a multi-racial President. He has a perfect platform to suggest a calm, rational discussion about race, if he would use it. We all have our biases, & we’re all going to filter things thru our experiences. There’s no way I can know how someone else filters things, any more than they can know how I filter things. That’s part of what makes the human race interesting. We all say things inadvertently that are foolish, clumsily phrased, &/or unintentionally hurtful. Again, this President is in a perfect position to point this out–& perhaps suggest that we all should be just a bit more tolerant. It’s not necessary to scream RACISM every time someone disagrees with you.

Unfortunately, this President long since blew that opportunity. His entire history of campaigning shows that he learned another lesson. Smear, smear, & smear again. There’s a reason someone as well-educated & media-savvy as the Obamas sat in the congregation of a vile race-baiter for 20 years. They realized, unfortunately, that the race-baiting tactics used by Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Jeremiah Wright, Marian Barry (for we long-time DCers), & others, works. That’s why we got his “Bible-thumping gun-toting bitter people” comment to a group of donors. Just remember where that first surfaced–on Huffpo. I don’t think the poster did it maliciously. I’m sure the person heard the comment, laughed along with the rest of the rich white limousine-liberal SFO crowd, & then posted it appreciatively to an audience he/she figured would also enjoy it. And I’ll be a lot of the Huffpo crowd loved it, until they realized it would backfire. (Hmm, not much difference than here–someone telling a story to a crowd who eats it up, until it comes to light later in a less-friendly light.)

It would be nice to think that we could have disagreements & discourse without constantly screaming RACISM. That’s why those Journolist postings should be taken seriously. We see a group of people who consider themselves the arbiters of “what people should think” (I also took journalism classes & saw what insufferable snots the students–& professors–are), casually discussing how to trash someone’s reputation by screaming RACIST. They knew they had the power & used it. Ironically, it is ultimately backfiring on them, as conservatives have read Alinsky–& sadly, the whole idea of racism is being diminished by constantly crying wolf. Not everyone who disagrees with Barack Obama is racist. If we truly are a post-racial society, we should be able to disagree with him because we don’t like his policies. It has nothing to do with his skin color.

So stop it. Just stop it with the RACISM bs. Let’s see if we can discuss issues based on the merits, not skin color. (That would pretty much shut down MSNBC, which probably can’t go an hour without a host screeching about racism–but that can only be a good thing.)

The Tea Party is an disparate grouping of AMERICANS without regard to, or reference about, race, ethnicity or gender or age (except to the Left, who ridicule Tea Partiers as “old white poeple”).

It’s about our political-economic times and problems. And that the federal government by majority today ignores the will of the American people on so many issues directly affecting our lives.

Taxed-Enough-Already. TEA Party. People, voters, taxpayers, are sick of being taxed without representation and of a dictatorial personality by the current majority in Congress. It has nothing to do with race, ethnicity, gender or age except to the Left, who use those tags for purposes of trying to ridicule Tea Partiers.

Lourdes on July 21, 2010 at 6:04 PM

So stop it. Just stop it with the RACISM bs. Let’s see if we can discuss issues based on the merits, not skin color. (That would pretty much shut down MSNBC, which probably can’t go an hour without a host screeching about racism–but that can only be a good thing.)

SUPERIORITYGATE
====================

I was struggling with the fact that so many black people have lost their farmland, and here I was faced with having to help a white person save their land. So, I didn’t give him the full force of what I could do. I did enough so that when he — I — I assumed the Department of Agriculture had sent him to me, either that or the — or the Georgia Department of Agriculture. And he needed to go back and report that I did try to help him.

Of course it’s my opinion. Dr. King’s a wonderful person, reasons beautifully, is well inspired by very great ideals. I’m proud to say I enjoy what she has to say and often agree with her as to her views. It IS “my opinion” — yes — but by opinion, it represents a good thing, not a target for your stomach contents tossed about all over it.

This Conservative groveling is making me sick. The woman is clearly obsessed with race. She is constantly referring to who is white and who is black throughout the entire speech even when there is no relevance to the point she is making. The individual incident that got her fired may have been taken out of context but the rest of the speech is ridiculous.

If any white person talked like that they would be hounded. She is also got a huge payout from the government related to the Pigford case and then right after, voila, she gets a government job. She is no hero.

Race Card–I’m not offended, period. I find the whole thing tiresome. What I find unfortunate is that the constant hurling or the “racist” canard, like the “he’s as bad as Stalin,” “he’s as bad as Hitler,” “this is a gulag,” nonsense, diminishes & demeans what are originally very bad things. I don’t care whether it comes from the right or the left. If you think about it, eventually we’re all racists. Everyone ultimately says something that offends someone else. So do we continue to scream RACISM, or do we decide to be grown-ups? The US is not Nazi Germany or Stalin’s USSR or a gulag. NO President (Bush, Obama, etc.) is Stalin or Hitler or any other genocidal lunatic who slaughtered millions. Someone is not racist just because I don’t agree with them, or you don’t agree with them, or because they disagree with Barack Obama. I’d just like to see more grown-up discussions. The ridiculousness of the NAACP’s resolution condemning the Tea Party (or “tea-baggers” as so many liberal like to say) & their “vial” (their spelling, not mine, on their website) beliefs doesn’t serve any purpose other than to inflame passions & pander to the lowest common denominator. I have yet to figure out what their agenda was other that to be another tool for Obama to trash his opponents. They could have called for discussion on health care or how to get companies hiring again or how to improve the business environment to encourage small business to start up again or so many other issues where their voice would have carried much weight. They chose to go with the race card, again. I fail to see any positive purpose for it.

About the racism accusations, those ongoing slurs by the Left against, well, against just about anyone who isn’t bowing to Obama and/or voting Democrat…

Remember Congressman Clyburn? His rant about how it was that “Americans are racists” as to those voters/taxpayers who did NOT support Obama’s (and Clyburn’s and the Democrats’) “Stimulus”?

Clyburn ranted about “Americans” as “racists” if and when there wasn’t support for the Stimulus…

So my reaction to that was, “gee, who knew that money had a race?”

And, “Wow, the Stimulus spending and increased national debt is due to racial-economics? Otherwise, what’s “racist” about not supporting the Stimulus and what is “not racist” when you do?”

Clyburn’s wretched racist screed was never discounted or apologized for the anyone. The Left seems to have nodded approval of his slur, in fact.

It was an inexplicable statement, from any angle, except from a racist who defines the Stimulus as taxpayer money being spent ON OR FOR his own race (“Black”) or others (“not White” because clearly Clyburn’s interests are in opposition to Caucasians he holds in low regard) at the expense of others.

Lourdes on July 21, 2010 at 6:21 PM

We’re not all racists. Speak for yourself. I don’t need to use somebody’s race against them. I offend people all the time, but I’m no bigot. Every person who feels offended is not to be taken seriously.

Your statement is a cop out and a way to mollify your own lethargic response to bigotry surrounding you on the right. I simply believe that you harbor more anger toward liberal double standards than conservative ones. I’m sure you’ll disagree.

Clyburn appeared before the Governors’ Association and gave a speech in which he directly, verbally assaulted ‘REPUBLICAN GOVERNORS’ as being “racists” for not supporting the Stimulus legislation (increased national debt, financial bailouts, wasted taxpayer dollars sent for many unnecessary construction tasks…).

“Now that the full video is out there and Sherrod’s version of events is vindicated, Obama looks foolish, impulsive and reactive,” said Jane Hamsher, a prominent liberal blogger

Cindy Munford on July 21, 2010 at 6:32 PM

Echosyst makes a comment that goes toward one of the points I was trying to make in an earlier post. Echo mentions how Sherrod constantly refers to the race of the people she’s dealing with. I mention again, how we all filter things differently. DC is a very multi-racial environment (much more so, I think, than any other city). I’ve got co-workers of many races, & we’re able to have these very same discussions in a calm manner. None of us are right or wrong, but it is fascinating to hear how differently we can interpret the exact same event. Because we know each other, we know noone is trying to be hurtful, so we’re able to be more honest than, sadly, most people can probably risk. I’ll listen to someone talk about the same news story or article or event, & it can seem as though we’re talking about two completely different situations. Again, neither one of us is wrong. It’s fascinating, & very helpful, to have these discussions. I will say that racial identification does often come up. It really is an unconscious thing in most cases. (One perfect example is how various editorialists filtered the Tiger Woods story when it first broke. None of them are right or wrong, but it is informative to read what was important to each of the writers.)

Two more articles still available as to that Clyburn-racist-screed I earlier made mention of (up ^^).

Clyburn: GOP Governors’ Stimulus Refusal Would Be ‘Slap in the Face’ to Blacks
Published February 19, 2009 | AP

Clyburn: Stimulus Refusal ‘A Slap in the Face’ to Blacks, Even if Unintentional
House Majority Whip alleges ‘a colored thread that ran through’ the governors refusing stimulus money.

Clyburn’s screed there and abundantly repeated throughout his stint in government is dedicated racism, from a racist, promoting racism…it just doesn’t get any more morally or ethically corrupt than Clyburn’s twisted mind.

Lourdes on July 21, 2010 at 6:45 PM

Race Card–You’re making my point. I DON’T think people are racists. I doubt the NAACP thinks so either. You do agree that you’ve made comments that offend people. All it takes is for someone to now claim you’re sexist or racist or a bigot. How do you then claim you’re not? If I think you’re a sexist jerk, how do you argue against a negative? That’s what I’ve been trying to say. All this screeching about RACISM is counterproductive. It has largely been used by one group of people against another group both during & after the election. I find the knee-jerking on EITHER side to be counter-productive. As a woman, I really find it offensive. When people screech about sexism or discrimination constantly, it diminishes the seriousness to where it’s not taken seriously when it DOES occur. (And honey, I’ve encountered blatant sexism. I worked in radio in the 80s, where I was constantly told “we’ve already got a woman on the air,” “you all sound alike so we can’t have 2 women on the same station,” “Hey, our slogan should be ‘we put the cunt in country’–yes, I worked for a country station that actually did have 2 women,” & “if you make a stink & complain to the EEC, we’ll hire you & put you on midnite to 6 but we don’t want women on the air.” I actually appreciated his honesty in that situation.) So I’m well aware of hyprocrisy on both sides. I’d like to think I criticize it on both sides. I’m just pointing out to the libs getting all sanctimonious that it works both ways. I’m sure we’ll hear the NAACP & the Obama administration & the various MSM outlets apologizing tomorrow for their slurs of conservatives & the Tea Party.

The Sherrod situation really could serve as one of Obama’s vaunted “teachable moments.” Sherrod’s own story shows progress on looking past race; the reaction on BOTH sides of the political spectrum show that it’s not wise to rush to judgement on something. What are the odds that there actually can be thoughtful discussion–by either side?

Kittymama on July 21, 2010 at 6:46 PM

Jimbo3 on July 21, 2010 at 5:48 PM

What “news sources” did you read this in?

And do you actually think the NAACP would give him the entire tape? LOL.

Del Dolemonte on July 21, 2010 at 6:54 PM

Ironically, this whole story really could serve as a “teachable moment.” Sherrod’s original story (& the point I think she was trying to make) about overcoming racial hatreds (probably too strong a word), & the overreaction of BOTH sides to something before they knew the whole context. What are the chances of us seeing that type of discussion, calmly & involving all political spectrums–on any network or in any newspaper? Sadly, I doubt it can or will happen. Would be nice to think about. Maybe a simulcast on Fox News & CNN (&/or PBS), with Breitbart, Jealous, Sherrod, Don Imus, & perhaps someone representing the NYT.

Oh, & one last thought before I go home for the night. For those of you outraged about the coverage of Sherrod: let’s see if you can work up similar outrage about the coverage given to Sarah Palin.

I doubt you can be honest here in the comments section; you probably can’t even be honest with yourselves. However, I fail to see any difference in the coverage given them. Well, except the media have been far nastier to Sarah, & for much longer. (It took less than 24 hours for people to start apologizing to Sherrod.) The whole bizarre obsession by supposedly respectable journalists with her uterus. Supposedly respectable news organizations gleefully encouraging a dumb 18-year-old to trash his child’s family (a family that was very kind to him, actually, taking him in when his parents went to prison). Soros-funded bloggers (& kids of Obama supporters) getting the cell phone # of her children & making it public. A 62-year-old host of a nationally broadcast show making, frankly, creepy borderline-pedophile comments about her 13-year-old daughter. (Just insert Rush Limbaugh making the exact same comments about the Obama girls before you dismiss what Letterman said.) Virtually every prime-time show on tv inserting “Palin is dumb” comments into an episode. Think about it, & try to be honest. Do you think maybe it’s time to re-think the standard liberal line on Sarah Palin, & perhaps some apologies given to her? If you want to go head-to-head about dumb comments, it’s pretty easy to go tit-for-tat between Obama (57 states, 6 year Presidency, etc.) & Palin. I don’t think it makes Obama dumb; nor does it make Palin dumb. So when do the apologies start to Sarah? And liberal outrage over the way she’s been treated?

It’s posted on Washington Post.

She said Fox showed no professionalism in continuing to bother her for an interview, but failing to correct their coverage.

Shirely Sherrod:
“I think they should but they won’t. They intended exactly what they did. “They were looking for the result they got yesterday,” she said of Fox. “I am just a pawn. I was just here. They are after a bigger thing, they would love to take us back to where we were many years ago. Back to where black people were looking down, not looking white folks in the face, not being able to compete for a job out there and not be a whole person.”

Yeah that’s a good woman right there calling Fox News Racist/Sarc.

this pathological need to ingratiate themselves with people who want to destroy them

Kos’s claim that Obama is trying to ingratiate himself with conservatives is insane

It’s not insane to a regime that’s made a pathological need to ingratiate themselves with people who want to destroy them the cornerstone of its foreign policy.

So, for Allah and The Race Tard and Jimbo and the other candy-ass RINOs cheering for this allegedly former racist, I have a question. She says that in the performance of her job as a government official, she discriminated against a man because of his race. She’s black and she says this to a room full of black people at an NAACP event, as I understand it.

And while she is saying this, every audible voice in the room is applauding her and agreeing with her racist sentiments.

Now the rest of the story is told and she claims that while engaging in criminal misconduct as a government official, she came to a new understanding and now sees that at least this type of racism is wrong (good for her!).

And you want to lead a cheer for her? Really?
