Obama hits low in Quinnipiac approval rating

posted at 10:12 am on July 21, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

The public relations push at the White House has really flopped.  Not only have the economic indicators made a mockery of Joe Biden’s “Recovery Summer,” even Barack Obama’s approval ratings refuse to respond.  The latest national survey from Quinnipiac of registered voters give Obama their lowest approval rating of his presidency, 44%, with 48% disapproving:

A year after President Barack Obama’s political honeymoon ended, his job approval rating has dropped to a negative 44 – 48 percent, his worst net score ever, and American voters say by a narrow 39 – 36 percent margin that they would vote for an unnamed Republican rather than President Obama in 2012, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

This compares to a 48 – 43 percent approval for Obama in a May 26 national poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University and a 57 – 33 percent approval last July, just before the political firestorm created by opposition to his health care plan galvanized political opponents and turned independent voters against him.

That’s a nine-point swing in two months, which indicates that Obama isn’t getting credit for his “successes,” as CNN’s Julian Zelizer argued this week.  Obama has managed to move his agenda through Congress, which political analysts like Zelizer are now arguing should be a positive metric for Obama.  However, it’s not really difficult to move an agenda when a President has a 75-seat majority in the House and an 18-seat majority in the Senate.  The fact that it took nine months to give birth to ObamaCare under those conditions should be an indicator of both incompetence and inflexibility, not success.

Quinnipiac’s poll has lots of bad news for Obama besides the overall approval rating.  Independents have an even worse opinion of Obama, 38/52, and a plurality of 37% will vote for a Republican in 2012.  That’s a mainstream point of view, too; only 40% think Obama deserves re-election, while 48% say he doesn’t.

He doesn’t get better news on the issues, either:

Voter approval of the President’s handling of some of the nation’s problems shows:

  • Disapprove 56 – 39 percent of his handling of the economy;
  • Disapprove 46 – 43 percent of his handling of foreign policy;
  • Disapprove 51 – 41 percent of his handling of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill;
  • Disapprove 58 – 30 percent of his handling of illegal immigration;
  • Approve 46 – 34 percent of his nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court.

The Q-poll also rebuts the strange flip in the Gallup survey on the generic Congressional balloting.  This poll shows Republicans beating Democrats on that question by five points, 43/38.    That is an 11-point flip since May, and a 13-point swing from last summer.  Among independents, the split is even more pronounced, 44/29.

It’s Recovery Summer, all right … for Republicans.

I think he’s still in the 40′s because he has a rabid base of around 28% and the rest are people who give approval because they don’t want to sound “racist” to the pollsters. That’s my take anyway.

That’s okay his Rasmussen ratings are even lower: Overall, 46% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president’s performance. Fifty-three percent (53%) disapprove.

But like others, I can’t for the life of me understand the 46% still in denial.

I think it’s a combination of three things: truth (there are some that truly still approve) + measurement error (=/- 3%) + MSM spin from Today/View/CBS/NBC/ABC/MSNBC (+8 to +13% ?)

I don’t know how to measure the spin, but it’s got to be at least twice to three times the measurement error, IMO.

That’s why EVERYONE, to use “DUMB-0′s” words, has to have some skin in the game.

The ONLY thing that is still saving this country is that more than 50% do pay income tax. Once we cross that threshold we are toast.

His rating will dive into the low thirties by this winter. It’s always easier to give the benefit of the doubt in the warm months. By winter, with many facing their second or third crummy holiday season, heating bills, and the prospect of major tax increases in ’11 hoving into view, you’ll see far less patience for this Administration. Cold weather, and another lost holiday will open many eyes presently half shut.

How can he be that high? First, in any poll there is a wacky factor, like 8-10% that are simply contrarian or stupid. If you polled on ‘is the moon made of cheese?’, around 10% will say yes. He also has 90% of the black respondents that will never turn on him, because he might be incompetent, but he’s ‘their’ incompetent. Racism in other words. Add in the hardcore progressives and there you are.

Sure. This is made easy by the fact most polls show a decline in ‘White’ support for the president across the board. Oh, he has a decline in support in other groups, but, don’t you know drop of White support will be the focus, the story of stories this time around. Forget about the enthusiastic support and trust they showed him in the 2008 election. Forget about job performance, the deficit, and dismal unemployment numbers. The ‘prevailing racism’ in this country is bent on denying our an historic president an obligatory second term.

taney71 on July 21, 2010 at 10:22 AM

It really depends on who is sampled: likely voters, registered voters, or “adults” who either may not vote or may not even be registered, but will gladly speak their mind to a pollster.

Generic Ballot polls in the last two weeks:

Likely Voters Polls:
Rasmussen 45R / 36D R+9
Bloomberg 48R / 40D R+8
ABC/WaPo 49R / 45D R+4
Average 47.3R/40.3D R+7

Registered Voters Polls:
Quinnipiac 43R / 38D R+5
Fox News 41R / 37D R+4
PPP(D) 43R / 43D Tie
Average 42.3R/39.3D R+3

“Adults” Polls:
Gallup 43R / 49D D+6
Time 42R / 43D D+1
Average 42.5R/46D D+3.5

Admittedly, this only represents 8 polls, and I didn’t weight the averages for sample size (Rasmussen and Quinnipiac have the largest samples), but there are some clear patterns here.

Republicans do much better in polls of “likely voters” than in polls of “registered voters”, and Democrats do better in polls of “adults”.

An “adult” is anyone who tells the pollster he/she is over 18, who may not be registered to vote. Why not? Maybe the person is an illegal alien, or a legal immigrant with a green card who is not yet a citizen. They represent about 6% of the population, and most of them would vote Democrat if they could. A poll of “adults” could also include citizens who never bothered to register to vote, even though it’s really not all that hard in most states, who just don’t care about politics. They could tell a pollster anything, but won’t be counted on Election Day.

If a pollster is honest about polling “registered voters”, he may only call names from lists of registered voters, which would eliminate verbal “votes” which would be illegal on Election Day from the sample.

In a sample of Likely Voters, the pollster can call only registered voters, then ask a question about whether the person plans to vote on Election Day, and if the person replies no, end the conversation. Although no sampling procedure is perfect, these samples are a better indication of who will really vote on Election Day. According to these polls, among people who plan to vote, Republicans lead by 7 points on average. If they show up in force in November, San Fran Nan will have to hand her huge hammer to John Boehner…then comes the hard part.

search4truth on July 21, 2010 at 10:15 AM

Because it’s not cool to bash Obama. Yet.

That’s what drove Bush’s numbers down. A large percentage of younger voters didn’t like Bush due to peer pressure. I live near the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and whenever I used to hear people bashing Bush, I always had one standard question I’d ask: “Can you tell me one specific policy that Bush put in place that you don’t like?”

About half of the college kids who I asked that question to could not name a specific policy. They really did not know why they disliked him, other than the fact that they were “supposed” to dislike him. The other half would usually mention the war in Iraq or the Patriot Act. But very seldom would I ever get any other specific policies mentioned.

Even now when it comes to the economic problems and I hear people blame Bush, I always ask them to name specific policies he put in place that caused the current economic problems. Again, seldom do people name a specific policy, but the one most often cited when they do is “he cut taxes for the rich”. When I ask how that caused the recession, they usually look at me like I had asked them how to build a rocket to get to Mars. They have no idea. But they know it’s what they’re “supposed” to say.

Obama hasn’t reached that point of peer pressure bashing. And the worst part is that when you ask people about specific policies that Obama has put in place, people generally know what those are. And they even agree they’re hurting the country. But they’re still not bashing him. Yet.

It’s coming, slowly but surely. The younger voters are testing the waters lately trying to determine if they’ll be eaten alive by their peers if they say anything negative. As they sense more and more that it’s okay, they’ll start doing it more and more.

ButterflyDragon on July 21, 2010 at 12:39 PM

I’m surprised by the overall approval of the nomination of Kagan.

I mean, I can agree, that compared to everything else, this probably is his most redeeming “success,” but that fact that people actually approve of the fact that he nominated a demonstrably unqualified person for a *lifetime* appointment to this esteemed posision for almost assuredly purely political reasons is quite shocking; and that approval enjoys a pretty good margin to boot.

Is this just a case of people being optimistic and looking for something (anything!) that they can give him props on? Or am I missing something; maybe Kagan’s a good choice after all?

BlueCollarAstronaut on July 21, 2010 at 12:55 PM

Some people have the vocabulary to sum up things in a way you can understand them. This quote came from the Czech Republic. Someone over there has it figured out. We have a lot of work to do.

“The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president.”

“The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince.

The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.”

Here imho is the main thrust of the poll and why Obama may be in deep trouble. Quinnpiac (Q)asked two questions pertaining to Obama’s re-election, whether folks would vote for him for re-election if the vote was held now and whether he SHOULD be re-elected. Well here are the results for the more important categories and the results of the 2008 election for Obama. The first category on who you would vote for is divided into Obama, generic GOP candidate and depends who GOP nominates and the second category is divided by yes and no:

BO GOP DEP YES NO 2008
OVERALL 36 39 13 40 48 53
GOP 4 82 8 7 85 10
DEMS 79 7 6 78 10 89
INDIES 27 37 21 34 52 52
MEN 31 43 14 35 54 49
WOMEN 40 35 13 44 42 56
WHITES 28 46 14 33 53 43
HISPANIC 49 26 13 50 36 66
$50K-$100K 36 44 11 39 52 ?
MODERATES 43 28 15 48 36 60

WHITES ONLY
BA/EVANGEL 15 66 13 18 73 25
PROTESTANTS 21 53 14 25 63 34
ROMAN CATH 25 47 15 29 57 47

CONCLUSION:

With these numbers there is no way Obama could be re-elected unless a 3rd party candidate emerged a la Ross Perot in 1992 and 1996 to split the vote and hand the election to Obama with the Messiah garnering less than 50% of the vote.

While his bad poll numbers may bode ill for other Democrats this fall, I don’t think it means very much, right now, for his reelection prospects in 2012. Too much time between now and then and none of us are able to see (though we can intelligently guess) what will befall Obama or the nation over the next 28 months.
What I think is more telling about the future is his inability to consider any other path than the one he’s been on from day one. He appears to be incapable of considering alternatives to his point of view. He’s content to let Congress write the laws and take the heat as long as his philosophy is dominant and his end goals are reached. Since his “leadership” has brought us to the brink of collapse, given his refusal to consider any other path, there is little to suggest that he would bend to any pressure to change course. Somehow I just don’t think it’s in him. He sees himself as a man of destiny fundamentally transforming America into his ideal of social justice. He is dangerous to the extreme, but in his intractability are the seeds of his own destruction.

Obama’s numbers may get worse now that his friends in the media have been exposed as Obama groupies and must now actually behave like real journalists for a change…”look, see how fair we are…now buy our newspapers”.

I wouldn’t hold my breath for this to happen.

13% of America is black. If we assume the same number in the electorate (a safe bet from the 2008 election) we can zero in on a number. Due to the historic nature of his election, and let’s face it, it WAS historic, the last group to give up on BHO will be black Americans.

If we say tha 40% of voters approve of BHO but then subtract just half of the black vote you get a number around the mid thirties.

I think that after two more years of this clown and he’ll be down in the 20′s regardless of demographic. Once you hit the 20′s it just simply can’t go any lower as that’s where the bottom feeders and socialists dwell.

Some one needs to explain to Barry O his poll numbers are not suppose to be like his golf score. Making the rounds are suppose to make the number higher, not lower!

I’m waiting impatiently for the GOP to nationalize these elections, and sweep both houses.
