Director of new “Captain America” movie: “He’s not a flag-waver”

posted at 5:56 pm on July 21, 2010 by Allahpundit

Of course he isn’t. Flag-waving is the province of reactionary simpletons, not a Hollywood hero … whose own costume incorporates the elements of the American flag.

They did something like this in “G.I. Joe” too. Oh well. Anything to help the overseas box office!

“We’re sort of putting a slightly different spin on Steve Rogers,” said Joe Johnston, whose past directing credits include “Jurassic Park III” and “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.” He’s a guy that wants to serve his country but he’s not a flag-waver. We’re re-interpretating, sort of, what the comic book version of Steve Rogers was.”…

“He wants to serve his country, but he’s not this sort of jingoistic American flag-waver,” Johnston said. “He’s just a good person. We make a point of that in the script: Don’t change who you are once you go from Steve Rogers to this super-soldier, you have to stay who you are inside, that’s really what’s important more than your strength and everything. It’ll be interesting and fun to put a different spin on the character and one that the fans are really going to appreciate.”

The movie’s set during World War II, so obviously we don’t want any jingoistic demonizing of the enemy happening. Question: If you want to make a superhero movie but you don’t want to be troubled with the hair-raising spectacle of out-and-proud patriotism, why the hell would you choose Captain America? Choose Aquaman instead and have him deliver the requisite lecture about fearing “The Other.” Granted, CA’s a symbolic character whom lefties would like to appropriate, but they’ve already been there and done that. Remember when Marvel was waging its anti-Bush crusade and had ol’ Cap martyred by a sniper’s bullet for championing civil liberties? Or how about earlier this year when they had him take on the greatest threat of our time, Al Qaeda Red China the tea-party movement? If Johnston’s hot to do some radical reinterpretation of Captain America, making him the flag-waving Nazi-smiter he started off as is about as radical at this point as you can get.

“We’re sort of putting a slightly different spin on Steve Rogers,” said Joe Johnston, whose past directing credits include “Jurassic Park III” and “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.”

Every time Hollywood strays from the core character that makes a particular character popular in other mediums, like books or more specifically, comics, the movies BOMB. It’s been shown over and over and over again. And when they stay true to the character they do well. This isn’t rocket surgery people.

Argh, I hope that was just his convoluted way to say the cap movie isn’t going to be overtly political and it doesn’t mean he’s actually fundamentally changing the character…

oddjob1138 on July 21, 2010 at 6:12 PM

My fondest memory of Captain America.

I was in the Kitzegin PX and there in the comic book section of the PX was a Soviet Colonel from the Soviet Military Liaison Mission reading a Captain America comic.

The Colonel looked like he was enjoying the comic.

Granted, CA’s a symbolic character whom lefties would like to appropriate, but they’ve already been there and done that. Remember when Marvel was waging its anti-Bush crusade and had ol’ Cap martyred by a sniper’s bullet for championing civil liberties?

Most of that character derailment can be laid at the feet of comic writers Mark Millar (a Scot who is aggressively anti-conservative and has described Sarah Palin as “terrifying”…..picture him as a straight Andy Sullivan) and Joe Michael Stracyznski (openly liberal, who’s work has become increasingly preachy as time has worn on). They turned Cap into a liberal pantywaist.

One of the many idiotic parts of that Civil War storyline had Cap oppose the Superhero Registration Act (which was designed to train superheroes and hold them accountable for their collateral damage) on civil liberty grounds, and one of his primary allies was Wolverine (from the X-Men), who in a previously written Millar comic murdered literally HUNDREDS if American federal agents and civilians.

•Including the cultural impact of hip hop music, ACLU lawyer Clarence Darrow, and the Hindu holiday of Diwali.
•Replacing the term “American” with (“Global Citizen”–) stating that students need to be shaped “for responsible citizenship in a global society” without any mention of citizenship in American society.
•Replacing expansionism and free enterprise with imperialism and capitalism.

If not, this is a director who doesn’t know jack about the subject matter. I’m guessing he may not start as a “flag waver” but comes to be one as he becomes a hero.

Cap has gone through many phases. Some where he stands with the government, others where he is in principled opposition to it. He’s ALWAYS been a flag waver though… except when he was Nomad and that’s a whole different story….

They did the same thing for the last Superman movie. The stupid writers made it a point to make it known to the public that Superman would not be just an american hero. He stood for “truth, justice, and all that stuff.” Real catchy. That lifeless movie bombed.

Hollywood seems to think it can take any idea and remake it in a global citizen image.

Probably true but not Captain America and I question why you would try unless youare trying to rebrand patriotism in a socialist cloak.
