White House: We didn’t pressure Sherrod to resign
posted at 5:39 pm on July 20, 2010 by Allahpundit
Via Tommy Christopher of Mediaite, here’s the denial from an unnamed “official.” Whom to believe — Sherrod, who told not only Fox News but CNN and the AP that she was informed her resignation had been demanded from on high, or the same people who assured us that they never offered Joe Sestak a job, that Barack Obama never contacted Blagojevich’s office about appointing Valerie Jarrett to his Senate seat, etc etc?
Here’s Vilsack’s statement:
“Yesterday, I asked for and accepted Ms. Sherrod’s resignation for two reasons. First, for the past 18 months, we have been working to turn the page on the sordid civil rights record at USDA and this controversy could make it more difficult to move forward on correcting injustices. Second, state rural development directors make many decisions and are often called to use their discretion. The controversy surrounding her comments would create situations where her decisions, rightly or wrongly, would be called into question making it difficult for her to bring jobs to Georgia.
“Our policy is clear. There is zero tolerance for discrimination at USDA and we strongly condemn any act of discrimination against any person. We have a duty to ensure that when we provide services to the American people we do so in an equitable manner. But equally important is our duty to instill confidence in the American people that we are fair service providers.”
Contrary to what some are reporting, the White House was not involved in Sherrod’s dismissal. A White house official told Mediaite “We did not pressure her to resign. It was the Secretary’s decision.”
Sherrod claims that it was Cheryl Cook, the USDA’s deputy undersecretary for Rural Development, who called her four times(!) yesterday insisting that the White House wanted her out. The charitable interpretation: Maybe what Cook meant by “the White House” was simply that Vilsack, a cabinet member, had given the order. The uncharitable interpretation: Maybe the order really did come down from on high among The One’s political team and now they’re wetting their pants at the backlash they’re getting from the left for pushing Sherrod out before anyone’s seen the full tape of what she’s said. Exit question: Can someone please help Tom Vilsack out from under Obama’s bus?
Update: Further to the point of what might be on the full tape, read the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s report on the relationship between Sherrod and Eloise Spooner, the widow wife of the white farmer she spoke about in the clip. Spooner says Sherrod is a “friend for life” who ended up working so diligently on her and her husband’s behalf that Sherrod’s husband allegedly once told her, “You’re spending more time with the Spooners than you are with me.”
Update: My mistake: I initially thought Eloise Spooner was a widow. Roger Spooner is alive and spoke to ABC this afternoon:
Was she at all racist? Did she discriminate on the basis of race?
The farmer in question says no.
“It never, never crossed my mind,” Roger Spooner told ABC News. “Never crossed my mind. Me and the wife, we never, we never, we never saw that at all. Absolutely. It’s unbelievable.”
Spooner told ABC News today that without Sherrod he would have lost the farm.

Sure they would. But I think they’d lose that one.

Fear not — I think Breitbart knows what he’s doing, and that he has more stuff that will make this tactic blow up in their faces.

We all know the Left would NEVER take video out of context when it could hurt Republicans. Just one example was the Macaca deal where a new slur was invented by noted Francophile George Allen.
Speedwagon82 on July 20, 2010 at 7:24 PM
heads are spinning at the WH, heads are exploding. . . Vilsack to resign in 3, 2, 1
Willie on July 20, 2010 at 7:24 PM
That’s what I’ve been thinking, and if they won’t release it that would be the most likely reason for not releasing it. I’d also like to see the full video ’cause I’m sure others spoke to the story — either other speakers or maybe during a Q/A after her speech.
Dusty on July 20, 2010 at 7:25 PM
I don’t buy that the farmer and wife interviewed are the ones she was talking about.
She says the incident happened 24 years ago. But she related the story at this NAACP banquet in March 2010. Between then she has become “fast friends” with this couple and she still uses, “sent him to his own kind”? and doesn’t change the beginning of the story about his “long talk showing his superiority over me” ?? I don’t buy it. There is another farmer out there.
How about this idea- after winning this court case Ms. Sherrod has found out how easy it is to claim you were discriminated against and has become greedy and she had someone at the banquet who KNEW the story make 2 tapes and cut off the first one at the appropriate part ie short of her “explanation” and possibly has a 2nd tape with the full “explanation”. This anonymous someone then waited til the race war dialogue took off and then sent this incomplete tape to Breitbart and then after he took the bait sent another, as yet unseen, tape to the NAACP.
If this was a phone tape or really any other type of tape- it was an incomplete, rambling speech. Would you keep it? Or delete it? Unless you knew you were going to use it.
journeyintothewhirlwind on July 20, 2010 at 7:25 PM
I agree with this. Look, he definitely delivered the goods on JournoList and he’s had success in the past. I even expect that he’ll deliver a major story before November that will influence the election. He just needs to tighten up the operation a bit.

I assume since you haven’t done an update on the Pigford case that you think it is inconsequential? Just wonder from a recovering lawyer’s perspective.
Cindy Munford on July 20, 2010 at 7:27 PM
I agree. He seems like a magnificent bastard able to use the state-run media against themselves. If the NAACP didn’t know for a fact that there are racists amongst their ranks, why would they so quickly throw her under the bus? Their reaction seems like an admission of guilt to me.
NTWR on July 20, 2010 at 7:27 PM
Andrew told John King that he now has the full video. His source just sent it to him. If his video has the booing in it and the NAACLP’s does not, there’ll be some ‘splainin’ to do.
kingsjester on July 20, 2010 at 7:27 PM
I’m thinking the WH wanted to keep its distance from her and maybe Vilsack took the fall for the WH.
petefrt on July 20, 2010 at 7:28 PM
That is an interview worth watching. Funny Breitbart puts the video out there and she is let go yet Breitbart never said they should fire her and in fact his point WAS about the crowd’s reaction.

Did Sherrod work with only one white farmer in her career? How do we know Spooner is the one in question? Did she use his name in the discussion?
obladioblada on July 20, 2010 at 7:31 PM
There are so many layers to this story that it’s hard to focus, even to know where to start. Dozens of questions screaming for answers. Answering one question raises two more. Delicious!
petefrt on July 20, 2010 at 7:32 PM
If I had been present at this event and heard this original speech of supposed redemption, the minute anyone heard that Sherrod was being mis-understood and fired, I would have spoken up–long and loud. They waited even though we can presume that they all heard the whole thing. Didn’t happen, or more accurately it didn’t happen until some time afterwards. In the meantime the NAACP denounces her!!!! Then mysteriously back tracks. Something is just wrong here–smells a little.

I wonder why the NAACP, in their retraction, stated that they had reviewed the full video and felt that they had been snookered? Did they always have access to the entire video and if so why did they not watch it before taking Mrs. Sherrod to task. And if the entire video vindicates Mrs. Sherrod why have they not released it?

We use so many anachronisms in language…
“Kid, you sound like a broken record…”

I know my parents loved me, they let me watch Batman and the Monkees on our only television. BTW, some video stores carry the original 2 hour pilot for Batman… Hilarious clean fun. Then, they had to add some adult humor since most folks had only one set. BTW, Flintstones was top rated in prime-time.

CWforFreedom on July 20, 2010 at 7:41 PM
The NAACP just realized Breitbart’s media-fu was better. Breitbart should just ignore Sherrod and put out more NAACP racism. She’s not the issue. NAACP’s racism is.

apparently naacp will release the full video tonight (me thinks it will be edited)
cmsinaz on July 20, 2010 at 7:43 PM
Breitbart NEVER reveals all of a story at once – he releases a little at a time, then draws in his prey. He waits for them to incriminate themselves – always in print and/or on tape – then he releases another bombshell that catches them in another bad position. This goes on and on, until finally, the other guys are totally and irreversibly discredited.
In this case, I think that Beck is the “good cop”, Breitbart is the “bad cop”, and Carlson is the “intrepid reporter”. Brilliantly started, and it will be a joy to see the execution of this play.
Somebody pass the popcorn…..
TeresainFortWorth on July 20, 2010 at 7:43 PM
Breitbart’s on FBC now. Says the gist of his story is NAACP hypocrisy, not Sherrod. MSM is trying to reframe it to deflect.
petefrt on July 20, 2010 at 7:44 PM
They don’t and we don’t. This seems more like a ‘I have white friends so I’m not a racist’ type move to me.

AB says NAACP audience reaction to her speech is key. Message: If you (NAACP) calls TEa Party racist, Tea Party is going to fight back. If you want to play this game just before election, bring it.
petefrt on July 20, 2010 at 7:47 PM
I did like that NAACP used the word “snookered”. I’m easily amused.

I don’t think they’ve been snookered so much as hit with a roundhouse left. They don’t know what Breitbart still has, so they’ve got the guard up waiting for the next blow. It’s hilarious.

Ditto that, methinks AB has the full tape and knows it exonerates her, this is just AB doing a guerilla jujitsu number on the White House knowing they’d go into all hands on deck damage control. After all, he did give them warning that this was coming prepping them to over react which they did.
Sensei Breitbart is most wise grasshopper.
Archimedes on July 20, 2010 at 7:51 PM
The settlement to Mr. and Mrs. Sherrod in Pigford would suggest that the department has been paying quite a large some of money on discrimination.

Well, David Asman seems to think the WH acted so fast and furious because they’re scared to death of FNC,Beck, Breitbart, et al. But I still think there’s more to it than that. I still think there’s a skeleton in this closet, and the WH is panicked that it may get out.

OH, I see Battle ACORN part 2. I also think they have alot to hide, and I think the lawsuit is the tip of the icberg.
Maybe even the iceberg.
Unless the iceberg really is race relations at the USDA. Whatever the iceberg is I’m pretty sure AB is aiming straight for it.
ORconservative on July 20, 2010 at 8:07 PM
As AB just said on FBC, MSM is trying to reframe the issue (so they could win it) to focus on Sherrod, when actually the NAACP audience reaction was his point in releasing the video.
petefrt on July 20, 2010 at 8:07 PM
That’s the paydirt – literally.
When people see how much money the USDA has been pissing away, and the circumstances of her settlement/employment since Pigford vs. Vilsack whoa nellie!
Breitbart is a frigging genius!
ontherocks on July 20, 2010 at 8:07 PM
1) The video was NOT edited. As was stated before, Breibart posted everything he had. The only think lacking is the ending. But that doesn’t excuse the two swipes at the farmer for being racist, her playing up to the crowd and the point about “one of their own.” Here’s a simple exercise – take everything in the video and change the colors – white to black and black to white. Do you think the NAACP would be defending this white person who admitted to racism and discrimination?
2) He did NOT misrepresent the video. He stated that it was proof of NAACP racism. Judging by the laughter, acceptance and agreement with her racist and discriminatory actions, the video does EXACTLY what Breitbart said it does.
Religious_Zealot on July 20, 2010 at 8:08 PM
From an earlier thread:
First, Andrew Breitbart made it clear to me last night that this was the entirety of the speech he had in his possession. He also wants to find the whole speech and is trying to get it.
This could just be semantic 3-dimensional chess on Breitbart’s part – technically, he may not have had the ENTIRE speech in his possession, just the part that was released.
It’s also possible that the ACORN team is pulling a fast one on AB to get back at him for the whole thing that put them out of business – if so, this may still backfire on them. However, everyone on the Dem side sure does appear to have been totally unaware of what AB had.
The fact that the WH and the NAACP acted so quickly tells you that we have them running scared. If they weren’t guilty of SOMETHING (perhaps totally unrelated to this, even), they would be saying the right things, patiently going through everything, and coming up with a pretty little speech. Barry is backed into a corner, and he knows it.
I guarantee you Breitbart and the others have thought this through very carefully – they may not have intended for Ms. Sherrod to lose her job, in which case, I think they are far more sorry about that happening than the Dems would be if they were the ones releasing these tapes.
This isn’t over – not by a long shot….
TeresainFortWorth on July 20, 2010 at 8:16 PM
1) The video was NOT edited. As was stated before, Breibart posted everything he had. The only think lacking is the ending.
[Religious_Zealot on July 20, 2010 at 8:08 PM]
The video was edited, but Breitbart published all portions he had received. Even the NAACP acknowledges the video was edited; they’d seen the whole tape, but they also acknowledge by their press release that Breitbart may not have been the one to edit it, which is why they use the generic “organization”.
Dusty on July 20, 2010 at 8:21 PM
I try to distinguish between a section of a tape and a tape that has been edited.
When you say “edited” in this day and age one tends to think that it has been tampered with – photoshopped, or stuff omitted or added.
This tape has not been tampered with – it is simply one section of a larger tape. Nothing has been inserted, omitted or rearranged in the part of the tape we have seen.
I understand that this still might fit in with the definition of the word “edited”, but as I pointed out above, that word has a connotation that doesn’t (and shouldn’t) reflect upon what has been shown.
Religious_Zealot on July 20, 2010 at 8:32 PM
Having read some comments, and the article, Thank You AP, and after being totally depressed by Mark Levin’s broadcast, I offer my humble opinion:
Don’t underestimate Breitbart
and KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE BALL.
This stuff has been right in front of our face for years and is meant to divide us.
“I Hope He Fails”
God Bless Americans.

A couple of points: 1) Keep the focus on NAACP, she was speaking at NAACP event, AND they were laughing and cheering her racist statements. THEY ARE THE RACISTS!!! 2) Do not forget in released video, she says “showing his supioriority over her”. Even Fox isn’t staying focused.
