Video: Sherrod says incident didn’t occur at USDA

posted at 1:36 pm on July 20, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

The USDA political appointee pushed into resigning over a tape from a 2009 NAACP awards dinner now claims that the incident she described in the speech didn’t occur at the USDA but almost a quarter-century earlier at a nonprofit. Shirley Sherrod tells CNN that she tried to explain the anecdote to the Obama administration, but that the White House was too frightened of “Fox and the Tea Party” to listen to her explanation:

Sherrod told CNN on Tuesday the incident she discusses in the clip took place more than two decades ago, and she recounted it to an audience to make the point that people should move beyond race.

“I was telling the story of how working with him helped me to see the issue is not about race,” she said. “It’s about those who have versus those who do not have.”

Sherrod said Tuesday that her remarks were taken out of context.

“I was speaking to that group, like I’ve done many groups, and I tell them about a time when I thought the issue was race and race only,” Sherrod said on CNN’s “American Morning” from her home in Albany, Georgia. The incident took place in 1986, while she worked for a nonprofit and before she joined the Agriculture Department, she said.

Be sure to note the word only in Sherrod’s explanation.  As I wrote yesterday, it did appear that Sherrod was starting to make a point in the clip about eschewing ethnic identity politics in order to focus on poverty. However, she then doubles back and says, “It is about white and black” as well as poverty. The point of her story wound up being that it was about both, a view that puts her outside of the mainstream — and apparently outside of the Obama administration’s comfort zone for honesty.

The larger point here, though, is not so much Sherrod’s speech but the embrace that her message had at the NAACP.  No one in this tape is heard objecting to her admission of giving short shrift to a client based on his skin color. Even the NAACP wound up pointing that out as “disturbing” in their initial response to the Sherrod tape:

Racism is about the abuse of power. Sherrod had it in her position at USDA. According to her remarks, she mistreated a white farmer in need of assistance because of his race.

We are appalled by her actions, just as we are with abuses of power against farmers of color and female farmers.

Her actions were shameful. While she went on to explain in the story that she ultimately realized her mistake, as well as the common predicament of working people of all races, she gave no indication she had attempted to right the wrong she had done to this man.

The reaction from many in the audience is disturbing. We will be looking into the behavior of NAACP representatives at this local event and take any appropriate action.

We thank those who brought this to our national office’s attention, as there are hundreds of local fundraising dinners each year.

I think the NAACP and the White House acted wisely in this case. It’s impossible to argue with that statement, and kudos to them for resisting the urge to circle the wagons.

Greg Hengler notes that this isn’t CNN’s only bite at the apple for this story. John Roberts and Kiran Chetry do a passable job in presenting the argument, but later, Tony Harris goes into full softball mode:

Sherrod and others can complain about Fox News and the editing of the tape, but two points should be remembered. First, Andrew Breitbart made it clear to me last night that this was the entirety of the speech he had in his possession. He also wants to find the whole speech and is trying to get it. Second, this has a lot more substantiation and evidence of racism than what the Journolist attempted to cook up against Fred Barnes and Karl Rove, among others — or for that matter, what the NAACP has to accuse the Tea Party movement as a whole of being racist.

It’s not going to be 7:49 PM for almost 4 hours here.

How can you say that when it’s already 8:04 PM? :)

petefrt on July 20, 2010 at 4:21 PM

So the white farmer should have “emotional damages” in his settlement? $150,000 for pain and suffering.
Sherrod is on a racial reparations agenda.
The argument that “it was 20 years ago” Not relevant. She brought it up in 2009. She is still racist at heart.

So is there anything damaging to Breitbart in the full clip?

Apparently the full video was sent to the NAACP.

No, that’s a link to the Atlanta Journal Constipation, i.e. a pro-Sherrod “news source”. The story you link to does not have the full video, just a link to the youtube of Breitbart’s original.

Another thing about this: Why does the NAACP seem to go out of it’s way to book speakers who apparently only care to talk about white/black disharmony. I thought they were about integration and softening of bigotry. Their audience seems to thrive on the opposite…more than thrive, actively promote.

If there was, the entire tape would be out by now.

Of course, if O’bama was as academically brilliant as everyone on the Left claims he is, someone would have released his college transcripts by now to prove it, wouldn’t they?

LurkerDood on July 20, 2010 at 4:23 PM

Can’t be any serious damage to him in it, so long as Breitbart’s crew didn’t do the editing.

I’d like to know who edited the clip and sent it to Breitbart.

First, Andrew Breitbart made it clear to me last night that this was the entirety of the speech he had in his possession. He also wants to find the whole speech and is trying to get it.

I’m getting the feeling that the NAALCP is being scripted by the WH (and probably Think Progress) nowadays. In fact, I wonder if the reason it was so quick to condemn Sherrod was it had gotten its orders from headquarters.

FIFY

petefrt on July 20, 2010 at 4:35 PM

I have not found a link to the full video where she proclaims she made a point about racial harmony.

Therefore – until the full clip is produced – what we DO HAVE is a very damning speech about how she claims to have withheld support from a white farmer when she admittedly had the means to do otherwise.

So until the full clip comes along to exhonerate her – my position isn’t changed. She can make excuses about how whites were in the audience and “why would I say things like that if whites were present” … but it doesn’t wash. Whites who attend NAACP dinners are probably the type that would allow that kind of rhetoric to pass without comment.

Breitbart brought evidence … and this woman defends herself with assertions only.

She needs more than that to get clean here.

Keep the focus here.

Nice try, Charles, but as I said earlier, just because a group of JournoList tards says something is so, doesn’t mean that it actually is so. Back to the comic books with you.

But thanks for the link. The little ditz admits the racism, now that I read it.

“For Fox to take a spin on this like they have done, and know it’s not the truth … it’s very upsetting,” said Sherrod, 62, who insisted her statements in the video were not racist. “I was struggling with the fact that so many black people had lost their farmland, and here I was faced with having to help a white person save their land. So I didn’t give him the full force of what I could do. I did enough.”

Keep digging.

AprilOrit on July 20, 2010 at 4:29 PM

How exactly is that?

What does it matter if she helped the guy? She’s on tape claiming to a mostly black audience that she witheld her full support for him due to his race.

It doesn’t matter if she made the whole story up for the NAACP dinner. She’s making a claim that she behaved in a racist manner and looks pretty proud of that – proud enough to relay it to a mostly black audience as an example of her “black solidarity” … or something.

HondaV65 on July 20, 2010 at 4:44 PM

Kudos to the NAACP for condemning her statements. It’ll be interesting to see if they really do look into the other folks at the event. I don’t think people should have to fear some PC-police whenever they listen to a public speaker. But for a room full of self-styled civil rights advocates to nod and murmur in agreement with this woman shows that the NAACP needs to spend some time educating its own members.

hawksruleva on July 20, 2010 at 4:45 PM

It’s Reagan’s fault!
Shy Guy on July 20, 2010 at 2:22 PM

Close!

Shirley Sherrod was appointed Georgia Director for Rural Development by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack on July 25 (2009). Only days earlier, she learned that New Communities, a group she founded with her husband and other families has won a thirteen million dollar settlement in the minority farmers law suit Pigford vs Vilsack.

The cash award acknowledges racial discrimination on the part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the years 1981-85. (President Reagan abolished the USDA Office of Civil Rights when he became President in 1981.) New Communities is due to receive approximately $13 million ($8,247,560 for loss of land and $4,241,602 for loss of income; plus $150,000 each to Shirley and Charles for pain and suffering).

There may also be an unspecified amount in forgiveness of debt. This is the largest award so far in the minority farmers law suit (Pigford vs Vilsack).

Question: the article says won a thirteen million dollar settlement.
Isn’t “settlement” usually used in the context of “out of court settlement” or “settled out of court”?

If that’s true then it seems Obama’s DOJ made a point of settling this case forking over $13 million of taxpayer money…..

Oh my this Pigford case stinks. Could someone with a lawyers mind look at this, the $13 million payout to Shirley Sherrod is only PART of a $1.15 BILLION payout.

Shirley Sherrod “S”canning may be due to the need to not let the light of day see this Pigford case.

Questions from the Washington Examiner “Shirley-Sherrods-Disappearing-Act-Not-So-Fast” article.

Here are a few bigger-picture questions:
· Did Shirley Sherrod resign so quickly because the circumstances of her hiring and the lawsuit settlement with her organization that preceded it might expose some unpleasant truths about her possible and possibly sanctioned conflicts of interest?
· Is USDA worried about the exposure of possible waste, fraud, and abuse in its handling of Pigford?
· Did USDA also dispatch Sherrod hastily because her continued presence, even for another day, might have gotten in the way of settling Pigford matters quickly?
· Was Ms. Sherrod’s USDA appointment an unspoken condition of her organization’s settlement?
· How much “debt forgiveness” is involved in USDA’s settlement with New Communities?
· Why were the Sherrods so deserving of a combined $300,000 in “pain and suffering” payments — amounts that far exceed the average payout thus far to everyone else? ($1.15 billion divided by 16,000 is about $72,000)?
· Given that New Communities wound down its operations so long ago (it appears that this occurred sometime during the late 1980s), what is really being done with that $13 million in settlement money?

In its “history”, CNN has been busted so many times for faulty journalism they are a joke to everyone except gullible Democrats like yourself.

CNN had to fire people after falsely accusing the US of nerve-gassing Laotian civilians, they covered up Saddam Hussein’s atrocities for a decade just to keep their Baghdad bureau open, and had their CEO resign in disgrace after he falsely accused US troops of murdering Iraqi journalists.

More recently, their idea of “journalism” was to Fact-Check a SNL skit critical of their Messiah.

If you can give us a reason, any reason, why you consider CNN a reputable news organization, please do so. And if you can find any examples of “Faux News” doing anything similar to the CNN incidents I cite above, please provide them.

HondaV65 on July 20, 2010 at 5:09 PM

Glenn clarified that the video was from 24 years ago – but released in march.

Sorry to Glenn, I misquoted him.

Glenn says they are trying to railroad him into the reason she was fired….

AprilOrit on July 20, 2010 at 5:11 PM

April, my dear, she probably shouldn’t have been fired because of the tape. If the NAACP has the “full” tape why won’t they release it? Either they set this woman up, or someone else possibly tried to set Breitbart up. Fishy, fishy, fishy. A an aside, I know this isn’t popular here, but I’m not a fan of Glen Beck.

sandee on July 20, 2010 at 5:12 PM

And why is Glenn beck lying on his show and saying the video is from march?

It’s from 24 years ago…what’s this about?

The video is from March 2010.

YYZ on July 20, 2010 at 5:12 PM

OMG – Glenn believes she should not have been fired – based on the tape.

AprilOrit on July 20, 2010 at 5:08 PM

LOL

Del Dolemonte on July 20, 2010 at 5:13 PM

Glenn clarified that the video was from 24 years ago – but released in march.

AprilOrit on July 20, 2010 at 5:11 PM

No he didn’t. He said the incident with the farmer was from 24 years ago. The video itself was made in March 2010.

Del Dolemonte on July 20, 2010 at 5:15 PM

OMG – how will Brietbart deal with Glenn Beck believing she should not have been fired.

As Glenn says – she was proven guilty before being proved innocent….

Go Glenn, put her on the show.

AprilOrit on July 20, 2010 at 5:15 PM

April who would have believed from your writings here that you would be such a big fan of Glen Beck. Why you even call him by his first name….

sandee on July 20, 2010 at 5:15 PM

A. When did Sherrod mention the farmer’s name, in her story?

Let me save myself the trouble. My answer for A, B, C, and D is that I haven’t seen the whole tape, and neither has Breitbart.

YYZ on July 20, 2010 at 5:15 PM

Are all Aprils on message boards, nuts?

MNHawk on July 20, 2010 at 5:09 PM

Remember April from Captain’s Quarters? Or was she on Power Line before they changed their forum?

Del Dolemonte on July 20, 2010 at 5:16 PM

Thank God for Glenn Beck, the reasoned voice of Conservatism.

Not a partisan hack like Breitbart….

AprilOrit on July 20, 2010 at 5:16 PM

OK, so Breitbart claims he does not have the full tape. Did he get “set up” or is he doing the “set up”? He knows this administration is a bunch of amatuers. Did he know, with a little baiting on his behalf, that they would jump in in a flash and throw this woman under the bus?

humdinger on July 20, 2010 at 5:17 PM

That’s it for me here. I can”t take anymore April…

sandee on July 20, 2010 at 5:17 PM

Not a partisan hack like Breitbart….

Why, did Breitbart demand her resignation?

humdinger on July 20, 2010 at 5:18 PM

Remember April from Captain’s Quarters? Or was she on Power Line before they changed their forum?

Del Dolemonte on July 20, 2010 at 5:16 PM

Not me, never commented on Ed’s blog or Powerline.

I have been here since Michelle owned it and Bryan Preston was here – before Ed.

That’s a different April….she/this has come up before.

AprilOrit on July 20, 2010 at 5:18 PM

I haven’t seen the whole tape, and neither has Breitbart.

YYZ on July 20, 2010 at 5:15 PM

Neither has the White House, but they asked for her resignation anyway.

If the “whole tape” vindicated her, it would be out by now. What is so hard about that fact for you to understand?

Keep a-spinning, you’ll be a CEO of Maytag in no time!

Beck is clearing Sharrod cause he’s seen the full video??

LurkerDood on July 20, 2010 at 5:20 PM

wow. Glenn Beck is demonstrating that he is the best friend Ms. Sherrod may have tonight. He is asking great questions on why she was denied due process in the resignation. Very interesting and pass the damn popcorn!

ted c on July 20, 2010 at 5:20 PM

Del Dolemonte on July 20, 2010 at 5:19 PM

Glenn is after the NAACP to release the tape…they will have to.

AprilOrit on July 20, 2010 at 5:21 PM

Beck is turning this on the White House in a big way. He is calling it a political assassination or something.

ted c on July 20, 2010 at 5:21 PM

That’s a different April….she/this has come up before.

AprilOrit on July 20, 2010 at 5:18 PM

Another thing that came up before (in this thread) was your claim that the farmer “gave an exclusive” to CNN. I challenged you to provide a link and you’re suddenly afraid to. Why is that?

Del Dolemonte on July 20, 2010 at 5:21 PM

Let me save myself the trouble. My answer for A, B, C, and D is that I haven’t seen the whole tape, and neither has Breitbart.

YYZ on July 20, 2010 at 5:15 PM

CNN fans don’t exactly think things through, do they?

So I didn’t give him the full force of what I could do.

She really should just shut up now, to give the JournoList tards and CNN groupies room to spin.

AprilOrit on July 20, 2010 at 5:19 PM

Thanks for the laugh. I came over from Captain’s Quarters the same time as Ed did. That was almost 2 years ago. I had been at CQ (and Power Line) dating back to 2006.

Now find me that link with the CNN “exclusive” with the farmer. I’ll be back after dinner.

Del Dolemonte on July 20, 2010 at 5:24 PM

Del Dolemonte on July 20, 2010 at 5:21 PM

I was flipping channels and Rick what’s-hi-name from CNN was interveiwing the farmer and his wife and it said CNN Exclusive on the screen and Rick said it was an exclsuive.

What’s your problem with me anyway?

Are you mad that Glenn agrees with me?

AprilOrit on July 20, 2010 at 5:24 PM

Glenn clarified that the video was from 24 years ago – but released in march.

AprilOrit on July 20, 2010 at 5:11 PM

AprilOrit on July 20, 2010 at 5:30 PM

i hope that ACLU is willing to help her get that job back….LOL

AprilOrit on July 20, 2010 at 5:31 PM

First Mrs. Sherrod was going to be on with Megyn Kelley, then not. Then we heard she would be on Beck’s show. Wrong again. Why? Because she has decided that Fox is the reason for her situation. She needs to wake up.

Cindy Munford on July 20, 2010 at 5:36 PM

First, Andrew Breitbart made it clear to me last night that this was the entirety of the speech he had in his possession. He also wants to find the whole speech and is trying to get it.

If Breitbart were interested in anything but partisan attacks he would have contacted this woman before running the story.

Ed, you even say that it’s obvious this tape is in context of something larger, yet Breitbart ran it with the sensationalize headline of RACISM AT THE NAACP!!! He has no concern for the truth, just clicks and smearing “the left.”

This guys is a joke and ended up costing this poor woman her job. What fucking idiot he is.

Tom_Shipley on July 20, 2010 at 5:40 PM

Morrissey said, “I think the NAACP and the White House acted wisely in this case. It’s impossible to argue with that statement, and kudos to them for resisting the urge to circle the wagons.”

After listening to Beck’s take on this, I think Mr. Morrissey may want to revisit his convictions here. I think the White House pulled a typical Chicago “throw her under the bus” before they got any real context. Some one’s acted stupidly—–again.

Rovin on July 20, 2010 at 5:40 PM

Because she has decided that Fox is the reason for her situation. She needs to wake up.

She got in a heated argument with Roland Martin on CNN about an hour ago. It was very entertaining television. That may be the best you’re going to get on this.

YYZ on July 20, 2010 at 5:43 PM

The story is the NAACP audience’s reaction, the admin and the trolls (and the NAACP) is desperately trying to make the story ONLY about Sherrod.

Don’t let ‘em do it, it’s what they always do, lie, spin, bias, lie some more.

Merovign on July 20, 2010 at 5:43 PM

I don’t think she was going on Beck – I think she was told if she didn’t resign she would be covered on his show.
