Video: NAACP posts full Sherrod video

posted at 8:30 pm on July 20, 2010 by Allahpundit

We wanted it and now we’ve got it. Forty-three minutes and 15 seconds. I haven’t had time to watch all of it — the full clip will be crowdsourced in the comments, I’m sure — but skip ahead to 16:30 for the segment about the white farmer and stick with it until at least 24:00 or so. She actually introduces the story by saying how she started working in order to help black people but then, through divine providence, came to realize that she was meant to work for poor people generally. The key moment comes just after the 21:00 mark when she talks about how helping the Spooners “made me see that it’s really about those who have versus those who don’t. You know, and they can be black, they can be white, they can be Hispanic.” And the crowd murmurs its assent. From there she segues into a historical narrative about racism being an artificial construct manufactured by wealthy interests to keep lower-class blacks and whites divided when in fact they should be working together. Exit question: How long before Vilsack gives her her job back?

Update: From the comments: “So she’s a Marxist not a racist. She belongs in the cabinet!”

Update: I meant to mention this earlier but forgot about it after getting sidetracked with something: There is an edit in the tape right around 21:00, as plain as day. It doesn’t look like a major one since it comes in the course of her telling her story about the farmer, but why is it there at all?

Update: Tapper answers my last question: “NAACP says the tape was changed at the 21:00 mark. no edits, just a tape change.” It is indeed almost exactly at the midway point of the video.

OK, answer me this. I get Marxist bs and rich are evil blah blah blah but take this woman, or Obama for that matter.
The woman won a lawsuit and has a high paying job. Wouldn’t that make her rich? How about evil? Or are you only not evil if you got your money from someone else?
Marxism makes less sense than racism.

He also believes everyone here at HA is white as fresh snow and that racism only exists in the “south”. There’s a disconnect in the boy.

For the Trolls like race card and ort this does not matter.

CWforFreedom on July 20, 2010 at 9:36 PM

So, my conclusion to all of this is that the administration didn’t believe her because the head of said administration (aka Barack Obama) has said the kind of stuff that was only shown in the edited video. He felt it was too close to home, so he, doing what he does, protected himself.

This makes Barack Obama look weak.

Jeff2161 on July 20, 2010 at 9:37 PM

One of the things that Mrs. Sherrod mentioned that was interesting. She obviously has a problem with the wealthy and “it’s all about money” but then later she noted that blacks need to reach back into their own and help them out. “You never know if you are helping the next black president of the United States”. It’s a lovely sentiment but it sort of proves the point that people with money and power usually are careful about who they “help”. It’s my complaint about Washington and those guys are being paid to “help”.

Cindy Munford on July 20, 2010 at 9:38 PM

Allah……………I think Breitbart blew it and his excuse on Hannity was lame but this woman is so clearly racially fixated and she’s a government official who says “we” and she means “black” and that’s not kosher. Listen to the post spooner parts in which she gets into the “we must” and veiled references to whites getting thing blacks don’t get etc. Her shot at the Tea Party being racist during HC debate etc. This woman should be in charge of handing out money to black and white people?

Breitbart should call Eric Erickson. They can talk about lost credibility, etc.

I like Breitbart but he blew it here. That’s one reason I love HotAir. Ed and AP just report and analyze the stories, they don’t try to make the stories.

Now, I think Palin, Bachmann, Beck and other tea partiers should come out strong and demand that Sherrod get her job back. First, it’s the right thing to do. Second, it would undermine the media’s narrative as the tea party as racists. The MSM wouldn’t know how to respond to Palin and Bachmann going to bat for a liberal black woman.

Breitbart should keep doing what he does, but he should double and triple check before putting stuff out there.

canopfor on July 20, 2010 at 9:24 PM

Have you ever looked at the map t shirt photo of Jeremiah Wright with Barack Obama? The map was made by Kenyans and I read where the map was offered for sale by “The Jamestown Project”

Jeremiah Wright’s Shirt Map with Africa has the date 1590. The common Historical date for the first instance of slavery in America is Jamestown in 1619. But that’s not correct Slavery came to St Helena’s Island in present day South Carolina before Jamestown colony was established. But not by Anglos by the Spanish and Portuguese.

Historians characterize slavery as being introduced in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619. Jamestown was an English penal Colony, one of the Colonies that was to become the United States of the Americas. Since South Carolina was a part of the thirteen original English Colonies, it should be underscored that slavery in what is now recognized as the United States of America was introduced on Santa Helena Island in 1526. Technical slavery ended on St. Helena Island, and in the United States of America, when the Union troops were poised on Port Royal Island in 1862. With the positioning of Union troops on Port Royal Island, the slaveholders fled the area. Therefore, it would be accurate to describe St. Helena as the birthplace of slavery in the United States, and where it was abolished 336 years later in 1862

As far as not allowing Blacks and White marrying she got that wrong too.

Gideon Gibson’s family first appeared in the records when they applied for land in the Santee River area in South Carolina around 1730. Although some objected to their being “free colored men with their white wives,” in the end they were given permission by Governor Robert Johnson.

I am a family historian she was playing fast and loose with American History in her speech.

I’m curious to see if this is Breitbart at his best. Remember the Acorn tapes? Provide a tape, Acorn lies, provide more tape, they lie again, until so many tapes make their way out that the lies only stick with the lefties and the media.

And the real story is the inherent racism amongst the black community and the NAACP. She tells a story about the white farmer coming to her for help and acting superior. She takes him to one of “his kind” and he doesn’t get help so she finally helps him – to what extent we don’t know because the stories seem to be conflicting. And now their best buds? I thought he was acting all “superior” to her? Or was it she who was really the one acting superior? A black woman in power over a white man? Sounds to me like her racism was pretty ingrained at that time, not his. She confessed, in public, to performing her job with racism in her decision-making. And it only took her what…20+ years to get fired for it? A white person would have been fired immediately…And don’t tell me people working with her didn’t know…they always know.

This tape has been edited around the 21 minute mark. When it comes back, everybody is chucking…

TheBigOldDog on July 20, 2010 at 8:46 PM

That “jump” in the tape caught my eye, too, because it fell at a critical junction in her anecdote. Maybe it is coincidental, but it did raise my eyebrows.

Sherrod points out a lot of sweeteners that have allowed people with no credit history to purchase homes or to make home improvements with no payments down and no necessity to have PMIs. These were the exact problems that led to bank failures. If this is supposed to be a breakthrough in achieving “social justice”/reparations, it is wide of the mark in promoting a sense of personal responsibility.

To her credit though, Sherrod does take the young people to task for not working harder at academic excellence and of not delaying their gratification of fleeting trinkets. She does encourage them to become entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, etc. She also urges the community to police its own just as folks in former days kept an eye on their young to keep them on the straight and narrow.

Sherrod had a sad tale to tell of former days in race relations, but she may be bitterly clinging to that narrative by implying that the scarcity of black employees in agencies she cites are the result of institutional racism

Her story about the 500 acres of land still shows she doesn’t like it when white men get anything. What else is really important that ppl STILL don’t know about this story was that Sherrod was working for a nonprofit BLACK farm coop at the time called New Communities. She was not employed by the government in any way. It Was a nonprofit designed to help Black farmers. and you had a white farmer seeking help from a black coop. The bus is going to bite him.

Barry prejudger her. How very “un-liberal”.

CWforFreedom on July 20, 2010 at 10:12 PM

The notion that the Tea Party was Race Conscious but the NAACP was not was pretty silly in the first place. Breitbart’s video showing the approval of the NAACP group when they heard about a white getting shafted shows either excessive deference to the speaker or an unseemly racial partisanship.

The racial partisanship of the NAACP has some supporting evidence. The racism accusation against the Tea Party remains; as Scottish law would have put it, “Unproved”and it does not have to be disproved if the accusations come without evidence.

KW64 on July 20, 2010 at 10:12 PM

Folks, I think there’s much more to this story…

The NAACP has retracted their statement now that they’ve released the video they had in their possession the whole time? Either they’re dumb as hell or like most people that tape was the first thing they looked at. Why change their story now?

Whippet on July 20, 2010 at 10:13 PM

BTW, someone really needs to go back an re-investigate the circumstances of her fathers murder…

ninjapirate on July 20, 2010 at 10:14 PM

xRos,

Right from AB’s original post -

In the first video, Sherrod describes how she racially discriminates against a white farmer. She describes how she is torn over how much she will choose to help him. And, she admits that she doesn’t do everything she can for him, because he is white. Eventually, her basic humanity informs that this white man is poor and needs help. But she decides that he should get help from “one of his own kind”. She refers him to a white lawyer.
Sherrod’s racist tale is received by the NAACP audience with nodding approval and murmurs of recognition and agreement. Hardly the behavior of the group now holding itself up as the supreme judge of another groups’ racial tolerance.

Exactly what part of this is wrong?

No part of it is wrong. Some here just can’t resist the opportunity to self-righteously flay one of their own.

This is the 1590 Africa Map made in ” Kenya” That Rev Jeremiah Write wears as a Shirt.

Barack H Obama’s father was from Kenya perhaps that the significance? The Map was being offered for sale I thought by the Jamestown Project.

Slavery started before 1619 in Jamestown, but I have only heard Farrakhan refer to an earlier date at The Million Man March, you know how Wright feels about Calypso Louie, he did his Numbers and Masonic secrets left built at the Capital schtick. It’s interesting that Glenn Beck likes to analyze art and architecture and he is having the “Restore Honor” event at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28th, celebrating Dr Kings “I have a dream speech”. For some reason the New Black Panthers picked the same day to be at the same place.

Oh yeah Lincoln is Obama’s favorite President, and he attended the Million Man March…and his AG didn’t prosecute the New Black Panthers for Voter intimidation…Their spokesman Shabazz is associated with Farrakhan. Beck calls these Data points :)

What is Wright’s message with his Kenya 1590 Africa Map Shirt?

I bet Farrakhan knows LOL!

No, of course the NAACP isn’t racist. Why would anyone think such a thing?

Feel free to prove he exposed a racist. Or rather, tell me what she says at the end of the video.

Months after her act of pure racism, she was convicted on it, by God no less, and ended up doing more to help the man and his family than anyone else, white or black.

Esthier on July 20, 2010 at 9:43 PM

It’s been proven again and again that Briebart exposed several racists from Sherrod’s admission of discriminating against a man because of his race (and imbuing HIM with racist intentions!) and all those in the room that cheered and agreed and laughed with her admittance.

As far as her being repentant, the fact that she:
1) still goes after the farmer as racist
2) refers to a white lawyer as one of their “kind”
3) accepts awards from an organization that is just a bit less racist than the KKK (i.e. the NAACP)
4) immediately blamed Fox News and the Tea Party

seems to belie the notion that she’s actually redeemed.

As far as helping the man, I find the whole thing very suspicious that although she never mentions a name or a time frame (in the video), the MSM has already “found” the family referred to in the video.

Religious_Zealot on July 20, 2010 at 10:27 PM

Wow, lot of new names showing up all of the sudden…and they all agree that we were wrong. Funny stuff.

Hey AP, why don’t you check out the newbies’ IP address and see wat comes up? Chortle.

AH_C on July 20, 2010 at 10:30 PM

Snookered??? How could they be snookered, Shirley Sherrod spoke at an NAACP event. Mr. Jealous had access to the entire tape but he never bothered to look at it before he blasted Ms Sherrod.

Sorry Mr. Jealous, but you can’t be snookered when you hold all of the evidence. And you are still missing a major part of the video its not necessarily about Shirley Sherrod. Watch the video again, listen for the approval of the crowd as she talked disparagingly about the white farmer and how she sent him to one of his own for help. You see, Ms Sherrod’s story doesn’t change the fact that the NAACP audience seemed to have approved of her actions when she talked about not helping the white farmer.
Shirley Sherrod’s story doesn’t change the fact Ben Jealous had access to the entire video and blasted Sherrod without watching it. That is not the fault of Andrew Breitbart, nor is it the fault of Fox News, it is the fault of only one person, Ben Jealous President of the NAACP.

Yep, stupid is as stupid does, and a racist is a racist.

Whippet on July 20, 2010 at 10:19 PM

Actually, this is wrong. She begins the whole story at 16:41 by explaining that she originally went into everything to help only black people, but that God showed her that the real issue was poverty. It tips off the audience that this is a redemption/overcoming story.

AngusMc on July 20, 2010 at 10:35 PM

Hey, this is scandalous!
At 35:56 or so she actually talks about getting back to values, that the better they do, the “freer they become” the more divided they are! She actually says “we need to get back to that” in reference to the values black families used to have!

Now if a conservative said something like that they are accused of using code words for going back to a time when blacks were slaves or whatever!

But on a more serious note, yes, she sounds like a much nicer lady than in the first clip.
However:

“That’s when it was revealed to me that it’s about poor, verses those who have, and not so much about white,.. it is about white and black, but it’s not, ya know it opened my eyes because I took him to one of his own…” (about 18:40)

So is it or isn’t it about white and black?

We endured 8 years of the Bush’s and we didn’t do some of the things these Republicans are doing because we have a black President.” (around 24:20)

So when Obama gets criticized it’s just because he’s black.
So, on the one hand she’s telling a story on how her eyes were opened, and in the next breath she says that Pubs are only criticizing Obama cause he’s black.

I’m not jumping to conclusions she’s divine now either.

JellyToast on July 20, 2010 at 10:36 PM

How ’bout this? Obama slams her for “acting stupidly”, makes her pound a few brews with Biden and we call it even.

I don’t know about that.

If the story was prefaced with “this is how I was, which is wrong”…

…then why are they laughing and AGREEING with her?

Wouldn’t they be “tsk-tsk”-ing or even lightly booing her actions?

I’m not sure how ANY context alleviates and explains away their joy and agreement with her illegal and racist discrimination.

Religious_Zealot on July 20, 2010 at 10:39 PM

So you are saying they used a camcorder that not only uses tapes as opposed to digital media, but uses tapes with a 20 minute capacity, in 2010?

That makes sense to you???

I think this lady needs her job back.

If you disagree with her views on Healthcare, or her love of the Obama administration, that’s fine, but she was railroaded out of town on this trumped-up race thing.

We Hot Air viewers should be in the forefront of it… In the interests of fair play.

JellyToast on July 20, 2010 at 10:36 PM

Good catch.. It’s as if racism only exists if/when directed at blacks; whites are fare game at all times. Calling for white cracker babies to be murdered is not racist at all because after all, we’re only talking about a white baby here. Calling GW Bush a crack head, a cracker, Bush Hitler, or any of the other hundreds of names Bush endeared was not racist because Bush after all is white cracker guy.

Palin’s family was fare game while no black politician’s family is fare game, after all, Palin’s family is full of cracker babies.

Silly me, I just don’t understand racism as seen through the eyes of a black person.
