Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on July 20, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

People around the country have demanded action from the Obama administration on border security since Barack Obama took office.  Arizona got tired of the White House not taking the problem seriously and passed a law to have their own police enforce the federal law.  Earlier this year, Obama sent National Guard troops to the border — and them said that they couldn’t enforce border security, but had to stick with drug interdiction instead.  Now Obama has finally sent the 1200 troops, but as Andrew Malcolm notes, helpfully included a timetable:

The Obama administration announced Monday that illegal immigrants from Mexico have until Aug. 1 to make it across the U.S. border before it gets really serious about border security with the deployment of 1,200 additional National Guardsmen there.  …

The Aug. 1 troop deployment, announced weeks ago and being implemented next month to supplement previous border efforts, comes just three days after Arizona’s tough new illegal immigrant enforcement is scheduled to take effect. The ACLU, Obama administration and government of Mexico, among others, are challenging the law in federal courts, seeking an injunction to halt the July 29 implementation, called S.B. 1070.

Here’s a thought.  Maybe we should have sent them weeks ago without telling people who want to cross the border when they’d arrive.  We could have just had them show up and catch border crossers instead of giving them two weeks’ notice about when the troops would arrive.

But that would take, er, what?  Competence.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

I hate it when American troops are used as props for any administration. This one is even more disdainful of them than was Clenis. Pathetic.

Not that 1,200 will make any significant difference anyway. I thought they were going to be REMFs (not really on the border…rear echelon)?

Every American high-school kid who has played even one game of football knows you don’t tell the opposing team what you’re going to do, or when you’re going to do it–if you intend to win the game. The nitwits leading our Nation have no clue–or they just don’t want us to win. Either alternative puts us at risk until 2012 and we can vote this crop of idiots out. And it can’t come soon enough.

Come on now Ed, that simply won’t do when you are using the troops to make a political statement. You know sort of like Obama saying something like; See, I am doing all I can to protect the border except those evil Republicans are blocking every attempt at comprehensive immigration reform which will let me seal the borders, and stop the invasion, blah, blah, etc.

WaPo has a front page story on how immigration will be a long term plus for the Dems. That is to keep the lib readers at peace with all the news.

You guys all know that this troops feint is just a PR maneuver. The average Joe wants them deported. Good thing we have our corrupt elites.

This may eventually make my list of the top ten outrages perpetrated on a great democratic nation.

Tougher rules of engagement and letting criminals know how much time they have to commit the crime are just ways of making things even. We have all these weapons and all these brave people, and it’s just not fair. What’s a few American lives? Police and military lives are cheap. We need to make sure the criminals and terrorists don’t get their feelings hurt.

I’m reminded of a situation in Milwaukee years ago:
They were catching all kinds of welfare cheaters during surprise inspections, so somebody (BMCW? City council?) demanded – and got – a law requiring a 2 week advance notice before any ‘surprise inspections’.

Brilliant.

This consistent telegraphing of our intentions with our troops must be a treasonous, impeachable offense. When you consistently, compulsively, announce where, and when you are deploying our men, and women, you put them at grave risk. What’s to stop the narco-terrorists from preparing to ambush the National Guard? We need to legalize, and fully regulate and tax marijuana NOW. That is the lifeblood of these drug dealers.

teacherman on July 20, 2010 at 8:46 AM

The administration has obfuscated their response to the Southern Border Invasion so that I am now confused as to how many actual Federal troops we will have on the border by August 1 and what they will be doing. What are the rules of engagement here?
.
How can the Federal Government be fighting more against one of the 50 States than against the Invasion of the Illegals (Southern Strategy)? “Southern Strategy” might take on a whole new meaning if the Øbummer administration isn’t more adept at enforcing Constitutional requirements.
.
I like that comparison: Øbummer’s Southern Strategy is to weaken Golf states through economic hardship and lack of effective Federal EPA response and to weaken southern border states by denying effective Federal help to prevent the tide of illegal immigrants overwhelming local law enforcement.

ExpressoBold on July 20, 2010 at 8:54 AM

This may be PR maneovering, but I think it is legal skullduggery: the White House is sending the troups so they can say, “see Arizona didn’t need that law. WE do the enforcement.”

that is one of the most callous things I’ve ever seen.

TwilightAuthor on July 20, 2010 at 8:58 AM

I understand the Mexican President is talking about suing since the illegal union contract calls for at least 1 month notice so that the illegals can plan their penal plant surgeries.

katablog.com on July 20, 2010 at 9:02 AM

I’m really sick of this @sshat painting bulls-eyes on the backs of American troops while giving criminals and terrorists a timeline with which they can plan their criminal behavior. Remember when Reagan dropped a crapload of Marines on Grenada before the Cubans knew what hit them? I’d give anything to have that kind of leadership again.

Oh, that is competence. He announced it to show us ignorant, unwashed, peasants that he cares about the border situation and he made it two weeks to make sure to get some more democrat voters in the country before the elections.

Vince on July 20, 2010 at 9:35 AM

Are these troops to be stationed inside the 80 mile no go range we have already ceded to Meh-hee-ho or on the Arizona side where it is still safe to go during the day heavily armed and with a backup?

Yeah, it would take competence, if actually enhancing border enforcement was the purpose of this dog-and-pony show.

But this action isn’t a serious border enforcement tactic, it is a public relations stunt. In fact, enhancing border enforcement is the last thing Obama wants to do on the border. So touting the date of deployment actually serves Obama’s purposes, which are to make a big show of enforcement while undercutting the enforcement effectiveness of the deployment.

novaculus on July 20, 2010 at 10:40 AM

This is not incompetence; Obama knows exactly what he’s doing with this one. He’s competent, and has made a conscious decision to abrogate the first responsibility of the federal government – protection of our sovereign borders. If this one thing doesn’t clue people into where his loyalties lie (and it’s not within the aforementioned sovereign borders), then those folks are remaining willfully blind.

Tim_CA on July 20, 2010 at 1:06 PM

It’s difficult to see through Bammie because he has several problems:
1. He’s a very stupid man. No evidence of intelligence. No data, no records. If all those records were complimentary, they would have been made public during his many campaigns.
2. He has been programmed from childhood into a Marxist belief set. No diverse views, no exposure to other theories. By the time he hit college, he states that he selected fellow Marxists as his only friends. He has the lack of intellectual curiosity that so many identify as a problem with Republicans.
3. He is incompetent. He even failed at being a community organizer. (see: Altgeld Gardens) The only position that he seems to have succeeded at was as an ice-cream scooper. His incompetence has been masked all his life by affirmative action, until now.

To summarize: stupidity, ignorance, incompetence.

VelvetElvis on July 20, 2010 at 1:47 PM

Ed,

It is not 1200 troops to Az, it is 400+ and only for four months as Gov. Brewer indicated. The 1200 total is spread across the entire US-Mexico border, less than one every two miles and they are not tasked to stop illegals from entering the country, only as monitoring.
