Israel demands written assurances from Turkey before releasing blockade-running ships
posted at 3:35 pm on July 20, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
If Turkey thought they had Israel on the defensive over the violent confrontation in May over the Gaza blockade, the Israelis sent a message of defiance today. Israel still holds three ships seized in that incident which resulted in the deaths of nine protesters (or agitators, depending on the point of view), and it doesn’t plan to give them back any time soon — not without some written commitment from Ankara on how the ships will be used in the future:
Israel is seeking written assurances from Turkey that the three IHH ships which it has in its possession, captured during the May 31 Gaza-bound flotilla incident, will not be used for another blockade-running attempt before it agrees to send them back to Turkey, reported Turkish daily Hurriyet Tuesday.
The IHH, which organized the ships of the flotilla, is demanding that Israel provide tug boats to tow the ships back to Turkey, according to Hurriyet. The Israeli Foreign Ministry has yet to respond to the complaint IHH lodged at the Embassy in Tel Aviv. …
Hurriyet reported that in past cases, Israel has required assurances only from the organizers which send ships to Gaza, but this time Israel is asking for assurances from Turkey[.]
IHH, readers will recall, organized the attempt to run the blockade on Gaza in the May flotilla. But IHH sponsors a lot more activities besides Mediterranean cruises. Israeli counterterrorism researchers note that IHH has connections to the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. It belongs to the Union of Good, the Islamic charity front group that covers its support of violence and terrorism with charitable work in the same manner as Hamas.
Under those circumstances, Israel has no reason to work with IHH for any reassurances of future conduct. IHH probably wouldn’t make a public commitment on that score, certainly not one they intended to keep, and accepting their word would be tantamount to turning the Israeli merchant marine into a de facto Hamas navy. The stand appears to go further than that, though, to force the government in Ankara to acknowledge their role in protecting IHH — or at least forcing them into a commitment to control IHH activities in the aftermath of this confrontation.

Why do I have visions of Charlie Brown getting a signed document from Lucy before kicking the football…
“Funny thing about this document Charlie Brown… it was never notarized.”

+10 for the Peanuts reference.
I’m sure those ships could be put to good use as an artificial reef somewhere. Why won’t Turkey think of the sea kittens?

Think target practice for the Israeli navy….

Does anyone here happen to know what, if anything, international law says about ownership of ships seized during illegal activity? I wonder if the Israelis are on solid legal ground if they say simply that the ships belong to them now.

I’m sure at some point ynet might float a story that somewhere in those ships is enough explosives to sink them.
Wether or not they are actually there, remains to be seen

“Israel still holds three ships seized in that incident which resulted in the deaths of nine protesters (or agitators, depending on the point of view)”
That’s exactly the kind of relativist thinking that leaves Israel twisting in the wind time and time again. I’m worse than disappointed to see it coming from you. It isn’t a matter of “point of view”, it is a matter of facts. And the facts clearly show that a segment on the Mavi Marmara were looking for pretty much what they got. And the media fall for it over and over again, in good part because of their “point of view” and not the facts.

Protesters? Agitators? Uh, Ed, the correct term is Activists. Get with the program.
The ships belong to Israel now. Maybe the next time someone decides to make a political statement that gets 9 people killed they’ll think twice if they lose something they value. And no, the 9 dead don’t count as anything of value. There will always be 9 more idiots willing to get back on board and they know that.

They should send them back to Turkey filled with food and aid for the Kurds and Armenians….

A naval blockade is an act of war.
Running a naval blockade is an act of war.
Sinking a ship running a naval blockade is perfectly acceptable act of war.
The Israelis’ should hire North Korea to help with their blockade.
Because it is always OK for North Korea to sink a ship.
barnone on July 20, 2010 at 5:25 PM
It’s simple. Israel should tell the Turks that the next time one of those IHH ships is involved in such a mission their response will be sink and rescue.

Why waste perfectly good ships? Repaint them with new names, and use them. Maybe even put guns on them and use them on blockade duty.
The Monster on July 20, 2010 at 5:49 PM
Nice one.
Remember, Turkey is a member of NATO. What you say is true, but the Israelis will avoid this at all costs.
