Gulp: Axelrod iffy on whether Obama will campaign against Crist
posted at 6:19 pm on July 20, 2010 by Allahpundit
In theory The One’s all set to parachute into Florida at the opportune moment and hit the trail for likely Democratic nominee Kendrick Meek. And yet … I sense hesitation.
President Barack Obama’s top political adviser declined to say Tuesday whether the commander in chief would campaign for Florida Senate candidate Kendrick Meek — even amid reports that Vice President Joe Biden may hit the trail to assist the fourth-term Democratic House member.
“We’re going to campaign for Democrats all over the country,” White House senior adviser David Axelrod said when asked whether Obama will show up in Florida for Meek.
Pressed a second time on Meek’s race, specifically, Axelrod replied “We haven’t worked out the whole schedule.”
Two possibilities. One: Axelrod’s hedging only because it’s still unclear whether Meek will beat eccentric billionaire Jeff Greene in the Democratic primary. If Greene pulls the upset, the Dems may decide that he’s a lost cause in the general and cut a deal to back Sunshine Charlie. Two, more frighteningly: Axelrod’s hedging because he’s worried that Meek can’t get traction in the polls, even if he does beat Greene and emerge as the nominee. Rubio’s counting on Crist to fade as Dems start to rally around Meek and the lefty vote splits between the two of them, but maybe Axelrod’s thinking that Meek smells like a loser, in which case he’s not worth rallying around. And indeed, in today’s new PPP poll, Meek’s still spinning his wheels at 17 percent while Crist leads with 35 percent; in fact, Crist is up since March among Democrats, independents, and even Republicans(!), no doubt thanks to the free camera time that the oil spill has given him. Supposedly Biden will start campaigning for Meek “soon,” but I wonder if that’s some sort of experiment to see how Florida Dems react once a prominent Democrat is in town and stumping on his behalf. If his numbers are still flat after Biden departs, do they start pressuring him to get out in the interests of having Crist lead a united anti-Rubio front?
The only good news: Given that The One’s endorsement is now ballot-box poison, whomever he ends up campaigning for is bound to lose a few points to Rubio over it. Exit question: Crist says he’s spoken to Harry Reid about caucusing with the Democrats but Reid says he doesn’t know what Crist’s talking about. Laying aside the conundrum of deciding which of two shameless liars is telling the truth, assuming Crist’s right, isn’t that another key sign that the national Democratic leadership is worried about Meek?

I hope he campaigns aggressively for both candidates!

I can see the candidates’ strategy going forward: since running as blue dogs and voting with the liberals hasn’t worked out so well, go for broke and run as independents or even GOP, and still vote with the liberals. The question is how the administration supports the candidates without looking stupid.

It wasn’t long ago that the White House wouldn’t answer Crist’s phone calls…

iffy=yes…
cmsinaz on July 20, 2010 at 6:26 PM
Wouldn’t the Dems in general and the Black Caucus specifically be a bit annoyed if he didn’t campaign for Mr. Meek? Although the jinx is pretty compelling.
Cindy Munford on July 20, 2010 at 6:26 PM
That Crist is even a ‘viable’ candidate at all – regardless of party or affiliation – shows the sad state of the electorate.
WTF is Florida thinking!?

Just keep posting the goofy Crist pictures… please, I enjoy them so.

Whatever the DNC does in Florida they better hurry. The Primary is only a month away.
AS for Crist? He has until November to flip-flop his way to election day.
Rubio is now the the defacto Republican nominee and also has until Novemer.
Based on the poll numbers, the Democratic race for Florida senate is just a distraction. The Race is between Rubio and Crist.
As soon as the primaries are over next month, I predict that Marco Rubio will again overtake Crist. Crist is actually becoming the butt of jokes in regard to his ever changing positions on serious state and national issues.
Nelsa on July 20, 2010 at 6:32 PM
I hope Crist is able to get in as many photo ops as he can with Obama before the November Election…what is Florida’s unemployment rate? 11.4 % Orlando’s unemployment rate worsens as Florida’s improves…improves to 11.4% Oh happy day/Sarc.

Dr Evil on July 20, 2010 at 6:34 PM
Rubio should put up a picture of unemployed Floridians with the caption 11.4% then switch to a picture of Crist and Obama….Florida, Charlie Crist is all about jobs – his job”

Meek’s a Clintonista and campaigned for Hillary in what turned out to be a meaningless primary. Maybe this is payback time. The Obamans are known to have a long memory and hold grudges.
T.D.D. on July 20, 2010 at 6:43 PM
Considering Reid (please please please let it be so) won’t be back in DC after the midterms, does it really matter what those two have discussed?
cs89 on July 20, 2010 at 6:43 PM
So Obama is going to pol for the Independent C’mon man… that’s not a gulp… That should be a giant red flag to the Florida Democratic party… “Hey guys! You suck at picking candidates so I’m gonna go with this guy over here and throw the independent money rather than support the Democrat chosen guy who went through the process and stands with the party!
Leadership!
Skywise on July 20, 2010 at 6:44 PM
I really feel sorry for Meek…Good think I don’t live in FL: I’d be tempted to give him a pity vote.
Crist is the embodiment of evil and I’m delighted he left the GOP.
Jenfidel on July 20, 2010 at 6:45 PM
This all makes me wonder where Billy Jeff’s loyalties lie. Is he friends with Greene? Meek’s mother would have been a member of the CBC during impeachment, thus I wonder if he might be planning on campaigning for Meek at some point?
lizzie beth on July 20, 2010 at 6:45 PM
Lest we forget: Crist is the mofo that stuck us with McCain!
Thanks so much…
Jenfidel on July 20, 2010 at 6:47 PM
Okay, that answers my second question, so Bubba could very well campaign for him at some point. Actually he probably will, we just haven’t heard about it yet. This might get quite interesting.
lizzie beth on July 20, 2010 at 6:47 PM
If Obama tosses Meek under the big bus, he’ll have some explaining to do to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People since Meek is black. But it’s rumored that Axelrod has a plan. He’s going to explain that Crist is a Colored Person too, since he’s orange.
This will confuse and disorient the NAACP since its research committee is still tied up trying to figure out whether a reference to black holes is racial slur.
Cicero43 on July 20, 2010 at 6:53 PM
This is exactly what the tea party wanted. For the last year, the motto has been “We’d rather have a far left Democrat if we can’t get a far right Republican”. Crist is doing exactly that, and clearly Floridians approve of it. Listen, tea party folks, it’s clear by the primary election results for NUMEROUS races that Americans don’t always want crazy right Republicans. You’re naive to believe if every Republican isn’t a “constitutionalist foundationalist conservative Republican” or whatever name you guys pick today, they should be replaced. I do like Rubio and I can’t stand Crist, but it’ll be hilarious if the “new and improved” far left Crist wins over the true Conservative Rubio.
NoStoppingUs on July 20, 2010 at 7:08 PM
Is our goofy president considering not campaigning for Mr. Meek and firing Mrs. Sherrod because he is losing white votes in the polls? If so it would indicate that he is a soul mate to Mr. Crist.
Cindy Munford on July 20, 2010 at 7:08 PM
The dude’s desperately terrified of backing yet another loser.
flipflop on July 20, 2010 at 7:10 PM
I am confused, you like Mr. Rubio but you think it was wrong for the tea party to support him?
Cindy Munford on July 20, 2010 at 7:11 PM
You don’t need to “look for signs” to realize that the leadership is worried about Meek. Although “worried about” is probably not the right phrase – they have presumably already privately written Meek off. I don’t think there can be any serious debate on that (for what it’s worth, intrade agrees with me). The only question is, how much support can they give Crist without being too obvious about it – they can’t publicly reject their nominated candidate without endangering party unity.

Rubio’s alying back and raking in the dough while Crist exploited the free air time provide by the Gulfsaster and holding the Guv’s office was a smart play.
Till now.
Rubio’s got the money banked, the cap appears to be holding and Crist will not be able to milk it mush longer. Now is the moment to start unleashing the attack ads he can now pay for illustrating the plethora of Charlie’s Kodak moments, gaffes and flip-flops. We’re now basically 90 days out from the election, it is time to start letting loose with both barrels.

Dr Evil on July 20, 2010 at 6:34 PM
Patience, Grasshopper – let the DNC surreptitiously funnel money to Crist behind the scenes, let them throw Meeks under the bus, let them do whatever they have to do to completely discredit themselves. Then go in for the kill – reveal which PAC contributions to Crist were from Democrats and the DNC, reveal which Democrat contributors DIDN’T donate to Meeks’ campaign (and if they donated to both, so much the better, because that’s more money they had to waste on candidates), and THEN show all of the pictures showing the cozy relationship between Crist and BamBam over the past few months.
We’ve got to let the Dems spin their wheels for as long as possible, and spend as much of their money as possible before we use our precious resources to go for the win. Most people who are going to vote won’t make up their minds until the last couple of weeks, and those who already know who they are going to vote for don’t need convincing.
TeresainFortWorth on July 20, 2010 at 7:27 PM
That’s true I just don’t want to see Rubio giving up any ground…ground you give up you have to recover better to add to what you have already accumulated. It’s kind of like not fighting the same enemy twice concept -finish them off the first time.
Dr Evil on July 20, 2010 at 7:34 PM
On the off chance the Crist wins he will vote with who ever gives him more power. If it is R 48 D 52 he will be one of the D and vote more left than right, but if it is 52 R and 48 D he will still be more left than right. He will be on the same level as Graham, McCain, Scott Brown and the Maine twins. Crist will have much more blue votes than any red votes regardless of who wins. That is if the Republicans do not take the senate. If they do then Crist with be a king RINO. Lets hope he can not be the 51 R or 51 D and it is not that close.
But this is all academic Rubio will win on the wave of Red that nothing can stop.
tjexcite on July 20, 2010 at 7:48 PM
You know this will all change for Rubio when he get’s the coveted, Romney endorsement. Relax.

What I find incredible is that the people of Florida, whether they be Republican, Democrat, or Independent….can’t see thru all of this? C’mon now. The country was duped once, by Obama. Surely the people of Florida won’t be duped again, by someone as unsavvy, and stupid as Crist???
