Quotes of the day

posted at 10:55 pm on July 19, 2010 by Allahpundit

The first six months of 2010 brought a string of warmest-ever global temperatures, but connecting these dots to long-term climate change patterns remains frustratingly difficult, experts say.

Not only was last month the hottest June ever recorded, it was the fourth consecutive month in which the standing high mark was topped, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)…

But making a direct link between year-on-year variations in the weather and changes in climate — best measured in centuries — is simply not possible, scientists say…

For scientists, he said, it would be like trying to figure out which way the tide is moving by watching only a few waves lapping at the shoreline.

***
Asked by researchers conducting a 1990s survey on air conditioner usage why she left hers turned off, a California apartment resident responded, “Because it makes it too hot outside.” She had a point. With less exposure to heat, studies show, our physical and mental tolerance for heat declines — and our fondness for the air conditioner grows…

Air conditioning buildings and cars in the United States has the climate impact of half a billion metric tons of carbon dioxide a year. That exceeds the total annual carbon dioxide emissions of any one of these nations: Australia, France, Brazil or Indonesia. In an effort to reduce energy use and curb greenhouse emissions, industry and government are pursuing more efficient cooling technologies for cars and buildings. But greater efficiency can’t reverse the unsustainable living, working and transportation patterns that air conditioning has helped foster.

Greener building designs that favor natural ventilation will help, but in the millions of existing homes, workplaces and schools that we’ll be using for decades to come, the most important adjustment will be not in our thermostats but in our own comfort expectations…

In other words, we need to back out of the ecological dead-end alley we’ve been traveling down for half a century. It won’t be easy. With air conditioning so thoroughly integrated into American society, we’re going to have trouble finding reverse gear. But it’s there.

Ohhh. So UVA should cough up $500K back to the state of Virginia? Because Prof Michael Mann said that AGW does cause climate change and bases that on not only year-to-year variations in weather, but also the manipulation of that data to falsely indude an incline in global mean temp.

Trying again:
It makes no difference. Hot, cold the people who have no religion to speak of, except global warming or climate change, will always, always and ALWAYS claim that the current state of weather is due to human climate change. Losers, idiots and peabrains, all of them.

http://www.usatoday.com/weather/climate/2010-07-15-heat-record_N.htm

Marc Morano, a global-warming skeptic who edits the Climate Depot website, says the government “is playing the climate fear card by hyping predictions and cherry-picking data.”

Joe D’Aleo, a meteorologist who co-founded The Weather Channel, disagrees, too. He says oceans are entering a cooling cycle that will lower temperatures.

He says too many of the weather stations NOAA uses are in warmer urban areas.

“The only reliable data set right now is satellite,” D’Aleo says.

He says NASA satellite data shows the average temperature in June was 0.43 degrees higher than normal. NOAA says it was 1.22 degrees higher.

…hyped weather results….data manipulated to reach predetermined conclusions…..

Nine new national extreme heat records this year
As I commented in Friday’s post, six nations in Asia and Africa set new all-time hottest temperature marks in June. Two nations, Myanmar and Pakistan, set all-time hottest temperature marks in May, including Asia’s hottest temperature ever, the astonishing 53.5°C (128.3°F) mark set on May 26 in Pakistan. Last week’s record in Russia makes nine countries this year that have recorded their hottest temperature in history, making 2010 the year with the most national extreme heat records. My source for previous all-time records is the book Extreme Weather by Chris Burt. I thank Mr. Burt and weather records researchers Maximiliano Herrera and Howard Rainford for their assistance identifying this year’s new extreme temperature record

I like the first comment at the LA Time:

Excellent idea! I propose a tax on all authors that don’t like air-conditioning to completing redo all of our cities to make them more “pedestrian-friendly.” Housing commissars could assign where people live, and employment commissars will assign them to work to best fit the needs of the state. Of course, such a state will have no need for authors who express their opinion, so they can be sent to camps where it’s cold all year. I keep forgetting – this was already tried in the Soviet Union, and we found it wasn’t a very good idea.

…We know that Air Conditioners are not on the list of terrorist groups…guess who else does not make that list:

Mrs. Clinton confirmed that the United States was moving toward putting the Haqqani network on its list of terrorist groups. But she said that should not necessarily rule out Afghan efforts to reconcile with it. “There is no contradiction between trying to defeat those who are determined to fight and opening the door to those who are willing to reconcile,” she said.

….So one of the most destructive and lethal groups of the Taliban (and the ISI’s best friends) responsible for the death of thousands of people including American troops… are not on our list of terrorist groups???????????

Given that worthwhile data only goes back a hundred years or so, the fact that this was the hottest June ever recorded (and three other months) does not in itself indicate a trend. (Or to be more exact, the odds that it is a trend are very small)

A statistician could crank out the data on the odds of a record month (hot, cold, or whatever) given the number of months of observation and assuming normal disribution of records. The odds of record months should decrease with time of observation. Month one, everything was a record, in month infinity there will be no more records.

ramrants on July 20, 2010 at 12:01 AM

Hang on, guys. There might be something useful here.

One of the never-stated, but quite real, reasons the Capital of the US is along the Potomac is that the area was a hot, humid, dismal swamp of no real use because no one wanted to live there. If you read the contemporary accounts, there was a good deal of weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth over just that subject. The idea was that if the place is actively unpleasant, “lawmakers” wouldn’t spend time there and have the chance to get up to mischief.

Air conditioning has spoiled that plan, and I agree that that’s a travesty.

I therefore propose a law (it might require a Constitutional amendment) making air conditioning illegal anywhere within the District of Columbia, or in any Federally owned or leased facility other than prison cell blocks.

It’s the least we can do to make Gaia happy.

Ric

But greater efficiency can’t reverse the unsustainable living, working and transportation patterns that air conditioning has helped foster.

OK, let me get this straight: Trillion dollar+ deficits, expecting “the rich” to pay for everybody’s health car and also “their fair share” for wealth redistribution, and cap and trade to tax industry into oblivion and citizens into serfdom == sustainable

A culture that has produced breakthrough after breakthrough, become a manufacturing powerhouse, has not conquered other nations to subjugate them, has spread freedom and charity throughout the world, but uses air conditioning and drives cars == unsustainable.

Hypersonic Cruise Missile: America’s New Global Strike Weapon

The mission: Attack anywhere in the world in less than an hour. But is the Pentagon’s bold program a critical new weapon for hitting elusive targets, or a good way to set off a nuclear war?
====================

A tip sets the plan in motion–a whispered warning of a North Korean nuclear launch, or of a shipment of biotoxins bound for a Hezbollah stronghold in Lebanon. Word races through the American intelligence network until it reaches U.S. Strategic Command headquarters, the Pentagon and, eventually, the White House. In the Pacific, a nuclear-powered Ohio class submarine surfaces, ready for the president’s command to launch

When the order comes, the sub shoots a 65-ton Trident II ballistic missile into the sky. Within 2 minutes, the missile is traveling at more than 20,000 ft. per second. Up and over the oceans and out of the atmosphere it soars for thousands of miles. At the top of its parabola, hanging in space, the Trident’s four warheads separate and begin their screaming descent down toward the planet. Traveling as fast as 13,000 mph, the warheads are filled with scored tungsten rods with twice the strength of steel. Just above the target, the warheads detonate, showering the area with thousands of rods-each one up to 12 times as destructive as a .50-caliber bullet. Anything within 3000 sq. ft. of this whirling, metallic storm is obliterated

upinak on July 20, 2010 at 12:17 AM

Well, they tend not to mean it literally. If you have ever seen photos of the aftermath of their protest camps when they leave, it is absolutely filthy.

They want you to provide them with the good things in life while they spit and scream about how terrible you are for raping the Earth of her oil, and minerals and using up all the natural resources keeping the poor third worlders down.

A lot like badly behaved children come to think of it.

The problem I find is that winning an argument with them is kinda like punching an eight year old. Its easy to do, but what exactly is the point? I mean can someone that stupid ever grow out of it?

We folks in the South will consider living without our A/C in the Summer when the Yankees give up heat in the Winter.

slickwillie2001 on July 20, 2010 at 12:36 AM

I’m not a big fan of all these global warming nostrums, but I think it only right that we immediately cease using air conditioning in all government buildings.

Immediately. 100%. Especially DC and Sacramento.

Is it so bad that even Bo can’t take it?

slickwillie2001 on July 20, 2010 at 12:36 AM

I’ve already tried that for the 8 weeks after Katrina without power; it sucked. I also lived in Chicagoland for many years, where running the AC was rarely needed. It surely depends on where you live as to how badly AC is needed.

GnuBreed on July 20, 2010 at 12:47 AM

I remember Ft. Benning with 100º and 100% humidity in August. My response about no AC is…

um… no.

300 nuclear power plants would solve 90% of our energy problems here in the U.S.; and nuclear power is far safer than any other kind of energy production.

When did Ted Kaczynski start doing opinion pieces for the LA Times?

This guy is a Luddite sadomasochist.

If we could only get rid of people, Mother Gaia would be spared all of this heartache!

As Well, Manifesto”!!!(snark).

canopfor on July 20, 2010 at 1:11 AM

What a brilliant idea. Who needs death panels to save medical expenses and social security? All we need to do is ban the air-conditioners, and all the elderly (including me) will fry.

And I might even support that if I thought it would save our money by driving people out of Washington for four months. But as Congressmen do with everything else, they would exempt themselves.

Dr. Charles G. Waugh on July 20, 2010 at 1:16 AM

It seems more and more apparent that what these liberal do-gooders really want to say is:

“How dare you selfish Americans have a decent standard of living? You have no right to elevate yourselves with hard work and innovation; it’s not fair. We’re going to take a bulldozer and level the playing field. We’re going to bring you down so you’re as miserable as the rest of the world. Why should your entrepreneurial successes and efficient farming and distribution methods allow you to eat better than the poorest of the poor? It’s not fair. We’re going to bring you down to a level that WE decide is fair.”

Odd how these same do-gooders don’t hold themselves to the same standards; for some reason they’re exempt from their own prescriptions.

Great idea! Also…no AC in any taxpayer-funded airplanes or vehicles. However, we will be happy to turn up the heat in NOVEMBER!

People who write on the internet that air conditioning should be eliminated have no awareness of their surroundings.

Maybe no awareness whatsoever.

SlaveDog on July 19, 2010 at 11:29 PM

They’re fully aware. It’s your A/C they want to get rid of, not theirs. All we need to end this nonsense is a bounty on the Leftists, with a point/reward system based on how high up the chain they are. From the Societal/Celebrity/Political perspective. I think it is coming.

The first six months of 2010 brought a string of warmest-ever global temperatures, but connecting these dots to long-term climate change patterns remains frustratingly difficult, experts say.

Proving a lie is frustratingly difficult.

Slowburn on July 20, 2010 at 6:31 AM

Wait six months and they will be telling us to turn down our heaters…

right2bright on July 20, 2010 at 6:40 AM

Yeah, we eat too much meat. We have too many cars and the ones we have are too big. Our houses are too big. We import too much food, we have to buy our food locally, blah blah blah blah blah blah.
In other words, we need to become a third world country and Iran, China and Russia need to grow, expand and become world super powers.

JellyToast on July 20, 2010 at 6:44 AM

The hot, humid South is all red states. No a/c is just another method of purging of pesky conservatives by the radical left.

redslippers on July 20, 2010 at 6:52 AM

I personally do not beleive these temp recordings they say are the hottest ever recorded, blah, blah. Everyone on the planet with access to the internet knows they make this $hit up. Why should anyone beleive them now?

Johnnyreb on July 20, 2010 at 7:51 AM

I read somewhere that the surge in American productivity (part of our exceptionalism?) coincided with the spread of air conditioning among businesses, industry and the general public. It would make sense to the Obama regime to eliminate A/C so as to bring American productivity back down to desired third world norms. Also works as punishment for all of those “ice people” who have oppressed so many “sun people” for so long.

Extrafishy on July 20, 2010 at 8:08 AM

I’m looking at houses in Florida and Las Vegas so I can move next year. While I haven’t decided where yet, I know exactly what I want in a house: I want an open floor plan with a great view of the backyard pool. I don’t plan to ever go in the pool, I just want to sit in my air conditioned house and look at it. With a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

Jaynie59 on July 20, 2010 at 8:09 AM

Stan Cox tilting at windmills again? I knew it before I hit the link on that second quote.

You can take my AC after you pry the gun from my cold dead fingers.

Get a life, Stan. Mind your own business, and stay out of mine.
