Biden: Failed stimulus all GOP’s fault; Update: Obama, 2/5/09: “I think we’re in range” Update: 2/9/09, “the right size, the right scope”

posted at 10:57 am on July 18, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Jake Tapper interviewed Vice President Joe Biden and challenged him on the administration’s new Recovery Summer public-relations sloganeering, with economic indicators retreating and consumer confidence falling. Biden implicitly acknowledged the failure of the Porkulus bill, but had a ready villain to blame — the dastardly Republicans who wouldn’t let the administration spend as much as they wanted:

“There’s a lot of people at the time argued it was too small,” he said. “A lot of people in our administration…even some Republican economists and some Nobel laureates like Paul Krugman, who continues to argue it was too small.”

“But, you know,” Biden told Tapper, “there was a reality. In order to get what we got passed, we had to find Republican votes. And we found three. And we finally got it passed,” Biden said.

But if it wasn’t for the legislative reality, Biden explained, “I think it would have been bigger. I think it would have been bigger. In fact, what we offered was slightly bigger than that. But the truth of the matter is that the recovery package, everybody’s talking about it [like] it’s over. The truth is now, we’re spending more now this summer than we — I’m calling this…the summer of recovery,” the Vice President said.

Really? The Obama administration wanted to spend more than $862 billion, and it was the GOP that forced them into a supposed Pic-n-Save Porkulus instead? That is an easy allegation to fact-check. All we need to do is re-read the stimulus proposal that came from Christine Romer and the rest of Barack Obama’s economic advisers in January 2009, before Obama took office and delivered a stimulus proposal to Congress. This proposal formed the basis for the claim that Porkulus would keep unemployment below 8% and restart the economy. How much did Romer propose spending to have that effect? Let’s look at page 4, emphasis mine:

A. Aggregate Jobs Effects

Estimating the aggregate employment effects of the proposed American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan involves several steps. The first is to specify a prototypical package. We have assumed a package just slightly over the $775 billion currently under discussion. It includes a range of measures, all of which have been discussed publicly.

The only other figure mentioned for the total expenditure on a stimulus package in this proposal is $600 billion, in a quote from Mark Zandi on the potential breakout of efforts from government stimulus on page 9. Using the “slightly over the $775 billion” model (Democrats got $862 billion from Congress), these were the projections made by Romer and the incoming Obama administration for impact on the unemployment rate — and the actual results, from Innocent Bystanders:

Joe Biden offered a flat-out, horse-crap lie to Tapper in this interview.  The Obama White House got exactly the amount of stimulus they wanted, and more.  The stimulus didn’t fail because Congress didn’t spend enough money.  It failed because Barack Obama and Joe Biden have no idea what they’re doing, and they’re proving that much every day they’re in office.

Update: From the comments, here’s a quote from Barack Obama on February 5th, 2009, about the size of the stimulus package:

While efforts have been under way in the Senate to whittle the plan back to $800 billion or less, Mr. Hoyer said he believed it should be higher, at like $880 billion. Earlier on Air Force One, Mr. Obama was asked by pool reporters traveling with him about the size of the proposal …

Asked if the figure shoud be $800 billion and not more, Mr. Obama said: “Well, I gave you a range. I think we’re in range.”

It ended up being $862 billion.

Update II: Via HA reader John A, here’s what Obama said four days later:

“It is the right size, it is the right scope. Broadly speaking it has the right priorities to create jobs that will jump-start our economy and transform it for the 21st century,” Obama said of the more than $800 billion bill at a rally in Elkhart, Indiana.

Well, Tapper for one.

Extrafishy on July 18, 2010 at 1:45 PM

Not even all the Dems voted for it.

They haven’t spent or even committed billions of dollars already. The idea that it wasn’t big enough when they haven’t found ways to spend all of it is preposterous.

MayBee on July 18, 2010 at 1:48 PM

I like Tapper, but I think he relies too much on Politifact to correct any false things his guests say.

MayBee on July 18, 2010 at 1:50 PM

These interviews aren’t really about facts, they’re video photo shoots. A tough reporter would have asked Biden to substantiate his claim, or would have done his homework and known what he was saying wasn’t true and called him on it. Today’s “journalists” tend to give every one the benefit of a doubt even when it’s been proven they tend to stretch the truth to fit their agenda. In fact, if I were a reporter I would assume that’s exactly what a politician was going to do and hope to be proven wrong.

They can only get a way with this lie so long that the stimulus worked, even the uniformed folks that voted for Obama will soon have to admit the truth. So get ready for the next lie for why the stimulus didn’t work. And we know what it is “it was Bush’s fault.”

So you have Intentionally keep unemployment high till this summer, the summer just before the political midterm election!

According to VP Biden MILLIONS of Americans have suffered, by design, so Obama could pull a midterm trick?

How many Americans have lost their homes for Obama’s game?
How many Americans have gone bankrupt for Obama’s game?

How many Americans no longer have any faith in Obama cuz of Obama’s game?

I heard Lynn Tilton speaking last nite on Huckabee that she has offered advice on job creation to Team Obama, apparently numerous times during the past year but her ideas are refused. Except when Obama apparently used one of her ideas without giving her credit:

(from her blog dated 2.10.10)
Candidate Obama took one too many wrong turns down Selective Memory Lane when he announced his plan to use $30 billion of TARP funds to make loans available to small and mid-sized businesses with the purpose of job creation in America. His mandate is a great idea. I really like it. In fact, I liked it last July when I first proposed it to the White House and the Department of the Treasury. I liked it when I created a website to garner support, and again at the time I published my white paper on the idea. I liked it when President Obama announced a jobs summit and did not invite small business owners like me — make that — he did not invite me, to the meeting. So let me borrow a little bit from Candidate Obama — “let’s make this perfectly clear” — I did not authorize The Common Man to take my idea and claim it his own. More importantly, like the common cheat in school who looks over his shoulder for the answer, The Common Man missed a key point when he copied. The money will not create jobs if it is made available only to banks.

(excerpts from her latest blog on July 12, 2010):

This month, one year ago, I made my last of many visits to Treasury to present a plan designed to sustain and create jobs. I believed then, as I do now, that an economic recovery is not possible until we can curb the tide of unemployment. Job losses cannot be stemmed until the liquidation of small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs), which employ 80% of the American workforce, are halted.

My rescue loan plan (RLP), as presented, accessed unutilized TARP funds set aside for the PPIP (Public Private Investment Program) Legacy Securities Program. Treasury originally intended $100 billion of TARP funds be used for PPIP programs but, only $30 billion was allocated and less was actually tapped for a plan that was ill conceived and underdeveloped. The RLP would have used $30 billion for equity and debt investments. The program’s blueprint was carefully designed to access structures previously announced and required no additional funding from Congress.

Immediate and early action to stop the bleeding and address the daunting but surmountable obstacles to job creation were overshadowed by the more politicized issues of healthcare and financial reform.

Her blog and company is at:

I don’t know anything about Lynn Tilton, but was curious when I heard Huckabee say she is a Billionaire who worked her way up from smaller jobs on Wall Street. Her company buys/invests in failing businesses and employees 160,000 people.

Someone from the Obama white house finally came to tour the flood damaged area of Nashville, TN. VP Biden was in town for a Democrat fundraiser (along with Al Gore) this weekend. Which of course means that taxpayers get to foot the bill for the Democrat party since Biden made it a ‘working’ trip; almost THREE months after the flood occured.

It’s all these worthless scum have is lies and misdirection.
The country is being run by a snake oil hustler and his usefull idiot sidekick, Pinnochio Obama and his idiotic urkel clone!

OBiden lied his ass off and just made stuff up in that debate with Sarah, which at the time I thought was a plan to keep her off topic and responding to him thus not making her own points. To her credit she did not go for it.
Now I am convinced OBiden is nothing more than an IDIOT, a lecherous buffoon who found his way to power amongst a gaggle of like minded lechers and leeches in the Senate.
Iremember the debate well and that eveniong it was obvious to all even most commentatros that Sarah wiped the floor with the fool. The talkin heads were speechless at the drivel they heard come from Obiden.
In the next days polls had to be stacked and talking points sent out to get it even close for the idiot who would be Vice Liar!

The country is in peril because the media, even the Fox media will not report the real unemployment, the real picture in the gulf, the real destruction these liberals fantasies and failures will cause!

Any more questions……..TTBOAOT!!

Good article: “Easy Credit, Hard Landing”

The effort to “fix” downturns with bandaid, ill-thought-out fixes is a recipe for further disaster. It’s a politicians’ game, and neither party has been exempt from playing. ObaMao is “doubling down” on poor policy choices, however, which are apt to be ruinous.

Joe Biden is a pathological liar. Here’s a partial list of his lies, credit to Ace of Spades:

JOE BIDEN’S 14 LIES (during 2008 VP debate)

1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.

2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.

3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.” But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping” the Outer Continental Shelf.”

4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it’s passage.

5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.

6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.

7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people’s health insurance coverage — they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false

8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska — she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it’s not a windfall profits tax.

9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.

10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation — he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.

11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.

12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.

13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn’t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.”

14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won’t pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.

I mean, telling whoppers on camera just has to be a prima facie showing that the man is likely dangerous to himself or others since he has no active self-defense mechanisms.

If you look at the decline of the economy you will notice that each new decline in the economy corrosponds to Obama rising as the democratic candidate and steepens with each new event that increases that possibility and his wining the election and again after the election has occured and his taking office. With each milestone Obama made it clear that he intended to put polices into place that were anti-capitalistic and seizing of revenue from those that create the jobs to redistribute to lower classes.

Investors and entrepuneurs do not create a business or corporation, or invest, without consiteration of all the factors and expenses that will be invloved in creating the business, it viablity to remain profitable and future cost, taxes and competition.

As am example taken from a local communitve desire. The community wanted a bowling alley and even had the donated equipment if they could find someone to do it. Several investors considered it, but it was turned down because the demographics of the community did not include enough rental units. Studies had shown that without a certain number of rental units the business would fail. More rental units were built and they now have the bowling alley and several other key businesses.

As it stands with the Obama polices those that would create the jobs can not create them. They can not with any certainity determine the required factors and predictions needed to create the jobs. They are not unaware of the grasp of a socialist government when it begins looking for more money to support its needs nor its tendency to consolidate business to gain control to regulate them.

Until that changes there will not be new private sector jobs. The worse is yet to come after the first of the year when the taxes and requirements will force more business out. At some point Obama will succeed in creating his socialist America.

Franklyn on July 18, 2010 at 10:01 PM

I love it when the eyes of the public finally open to the lies of the left and the arrogance of the left to blame the whole ball of wax on the GOP. It’s actually quite a joke when you look at it to think the left really believes that the American public is as stupid and will see their side of the mess in Washington. This summer should really be great for showmanship of both parties. Sit back and enjoy the show.

Joe Biden offered a flat-out, horse-crap lie to Tapper in this interview. The Obama White House got exactly the amount of stimulus they wanted, and more.

Yep Jack Tapper needs to interview this guy named Jack Tapper who works at a station that goes by the letters ABC.

He reported Jan. 5

“Good Morning America” that “Obama’s team is pitching a plan that will cost between $675 billion and $775 billion, one that creates three million jobs, 80 percent of them in the private sector,” Tapper said. “But they will face skeptics.”

Now if Jack Tapper can find this guy at ABC named Jack Tapper he should be able to get to the bottom of what the Obama admin wanted.

Maybe he could have that guy Jack Tapper point out to America that the VP is lying?

Naw that would require a professional.

Well, you’re right about one thing Eddie: horse crap. Biden is full of absolute horse crap, and a lot of people knew this. When asked about this stupid binge spending bill by Congress, I do recall someone saying they honestly didn’t know if it would have any positive effect, whatsoever. As opposed to listening to that guy (who as a liberal democrat, like Biden and Obama), as opposed to listening to anyone outside his circle, they went full steam ahead, listening only to those that told them what they wanted to hear, and then told them how great they were for doing it. Like Mark Levin keeps saying: Obama is an economic illiterate. To make it worse, he’s an economic illiterate surrounded by other economic illiterates that don’t do anything but come up with the same stupid kinds of ideas. Obama doesn’t know the first thing about economics, micro or macro, because as a first year economics student, I learned about Keynesian Economics, and how absolutely and utterly stupid an idea it is, as well as the fact that it caused a recession to literally transform into the Great Depression. Obama, on the other hand, buys right into Keynesian Economics, as well as the idiocy of ‘socialist free market’ lies, and thinks he saved us from a depression. Absolutely sickening.
