Palin aide: Romney squad “immature,” out of control; Update: Romney offers olive branch: “She’s proven her smarts”

posted at 8:48 am on July 16, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

It didn’t take long for Sarah Palin’s team to respond in kind to insults reported by Time’s Mark Halperin from an unnamed aide to Mitt Romney.  After the anonymous adviser sniffed that Palin is “not a serious person,” an anonymous “longtime” adviser to Palin told Politico’s Andy Barr that Romney and his team seem a lot more interested in self-promotion for 2012 than in getting Republicans elected in 2010.  Furthermore, the source said, Romney’s “finger in the wind” leadership seems to have led his own team out of control:

“It shocks me that anyone would try to do that,” the aide said. “You’d think we’d all be working together toward a common goal – that being 2010 – and that should be the focus right now. Those who try to claim the mantle of Reagan would be good to follow one of his most sacred tenets.”

“For Washington consultants to sit around and personally disparage the Governor anonymously to reporters is unfortunate and counterproductive and frankly immature,” the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, continued. …

Further, the Palin aide criticized Romney’s staff for launching into attacks focused on the 2012 Republican presidential primary rather than focusing on November’s midterm election.

“She’s not focused on promoting herself or disparaging other Republicans,” the aide said. The Republican Party is “not worried about 2012. We should be focused on 2010.”

Perhaps not, but this sounds like an argument for 2012:

“She’s not a finger-in-the-wind kind of leader. She supporting candidates who share her common sense values,” the aide said. “When you have a team of consultants and strategists that big it’s hard to control.”

Sounds as though Palin and her team are not afraid of playing a little hardball within the party, or at least not afraid of fighting fire with fire.  The shot from the Romney camp does seem to indicate some control issues. After all, while candidates will certainly jockey for position in 2010, it’s far too early to be taking public shots at each other.  The question of being a “team player” is rather important in the midterms.  Both Romney and Palin have done a good job in raising money and supporting candidates for Congress — and that’s exactly where the focus should remain.

If it doesn’t, Palin and her team just showed that they can respond in kind — and that pols with glass houses shouldn’t busy themselves with throwing stones.  As Tammy Bruce’s response demonstrates, getting into debates a year early may not help Romney out much:

So, let’s interpret this–the Decent Man-of-Faith Mitt Romney is so decent, so trustworthy, that his first plan of action, his first choice of attack is to call into question not Palin’s ideas, or strategy, or approach, but her very humanity; an attack which blatantly attempts to dismiss her as a silly girl, someone not with whom he disagrees, but beneath complete human status. Normally, your first plan of attack is your best, most thoughtful plan. This says volumes about Romney’s nature and character and it will not be forgotten. …

And the Republican operative? Attempts to reduce her to an animal, literally, and a cat, no less. Sleek (attractive) and fast (dangerous), but also, essentially, not serious. An interesting conjunction and indicative of established Romney and frightened Republican party line.

Here’s a word of warning to all the establishment politicians who think dismissing or denigrating Sarah Palin will pay off. The tact has been tried and has already failed. The same smear was tried by Nikki Haley’s opponents, and it helped propel her to victory. Why? Because the American people are sick and tired of gutter-tripe tossed at women who dare to pursue their American dream.

I don’t think Romney really wants the debate to go there at this moment.  Right now, he should get his team focused on the midterms and let 2012 wait until at least 2011.

Update: Right on time, Gallup polls Republicans and Americans in general on favorability among the perceived 2012 contenders.  Among Republicans, Palin gets a 76/20, while Romney gets a 54/19.  In general, Palin’s slightly underwater at 44/47 (and has the highest levels of both favorability and unfavorability), while Romney gets a 36/28.  At least as a candidate and an activist, Palin should be taken seriously by Romney.

Update II: Mitt Romney tried to call a truce in the sniping war with this message on Twitter at around 11:30 am ET: “TIME says unnamed advisors disparaged @SarahPalinUSA. Anonymous numbskulls. She’s proven her smarts; they’ve disproven theirs.”  Hopefully, that will settle things down.

There is no reason to not support even the weakest of Republican candidates over what another 4 years of Obama will do to this country. Even incremental progress towards the right is a better alternative.

That is not a solution. We have not made progress in the right direction. We’ve been creeping to fascism for a very long time. We need a third party not attached to the corrupt system or a very strong candidate (Christie).
The GOP thwarted a Tea Party infiltration in Ohio. Too corrupt.

I don’t agree.

Sometimes politics are circumstantial and and a loss in one election will lead to a greater success down the road. If Ford had won in 1976, we would never had a president Reagan. You can easily argue that in hindsight the Ford loss in 1976 was a good thing for rightwing progress.

We can’t afford that.

Obama must be stopped, ASAP, at all costs(politically, of course).

That is what primaries are for.

If my favorite loses fair and square, I’ll hold my nose and vote against Obama come hell or high water.

I would take President Lindsey Graham over this crapweasel we are stuck with now.

Primaries is where we fight it out. I intend on those being won by people willing to change the GOP status quo, but if we fail, then a cold re-evaluation must take place for the general. Like 2008 when I hoped somebody would beat McCain, but nobody did. I voted McCain. Sarah sure helped, but I would have anyway because I knew what this guy was all about early on.

We need to remember that Obama’s team has ALWAYS done whatever it can – in whatever race he has been in – to discredit all but the most beatable candidates (I’m not sure what they are THINKING in this case, however….).

Let’s let this play out and see just who the “unnamed” sources in the Romney camp are. Peel back a few layers, and there just might be an Obama “plant” at the center of all of this.

We need to understand that Obama has never fought fairly in his life – he is a liar and a manipulator, and the only person that he cares about is Obama. THAT is who we have to work to defeat. He’s starting awfully early, so he is REALLY scared at this point. He’s in a corner, and he knows it, so he’s gonna be very dangerous for the next few years. Be vigilant….

To take a page from Mark Steyn, I’d say you’re right up to a point. That point would be where the left has altered the government’s structure so much the debate between right and left is reduced to who can manage an oversized government better, not whether the government should have its tentacles in every aspect of our lives.

I’d agree with Krauthammer that Obama has made huge “progress” in this in his first 18 months in office. Another 6 years of him and he’ll have accomplished what he set out to – to fundamentally transform America. A significant majority of Americans will not pay taxes while a minority will be carrying the freight for the entire country. People who don’t pay the bills don’t care how much things cost. Look at Greece.

IMHO sitting out 2012 because the Republican isn’t of your liking is a really counterproductive move.

Me either. But there was a sense of tongue in cheek with the unnamed “longtime” adviser to Palin in his/her response. The Romney camp may be bleakly saying touché this morning. They made it too easy.

conservative pilgrim on July 16, 2010 at 9:05 AM

Spot on. Sarah has such a close knit little group, you can figure this was probably Rebeca Mansour (RAM) Not a whole lot of “close advisers” to pick from.

I, for one, am glad to have you on our side!

the key to rolling back the progressive agenda is to show the conservative adenga as success. Show that Ta cuts work, show that free markets work. The GOP has always allowed their success to go unsung. That more than any other reason is why we need someone like Palin or Reagan who by the charisma and character can blare the good works and success of conservatism.

Crossover voters are kind of like Californians who move to Montana. It seemed like a good idea at first, but after about a week of enjoying the clean, fresh air, scenery and lack of stultifying bureaucracy, they set about trying to “correct” those conditions.

It’s true that alliances can be based on compromise, but there comes a point where “we’ll vote for you if you’re more like us” doesn’t work – especially if it means “if you adopt our failed polices so we can have more failure.”

I think you still have a catastrophically blinkered view of who Obama is and what he’s doing, for example. The “It’s Palin or Obama” thing just doesn’t make sense except as a largely irrelevant threat to switch back.

TeresainFortWorth on July 16, 2010 at 12:45 PM, AnninCA has voted Democrat for 25 years and is prepared to vote for Obama again. Wherein is her love for freedom? Reagan stood tall for freedom and brought down the wall; AnninCA voted for Sweaters Carter. No Democrat president or Congress for the last 25 years has stood for freedom, AnninCA has voted for them. Lover of freedom? Not at all. Statist. That’s all she is: a statist who is seeing an inkling of the logical conclusion of what she’s been voting for for 25 years. She doesn’t like it; she’s afraid of it, but she prefers to continue voting for Obama’s enslavement of Americans. Freedom? Liberty loving? AnninCA doesn’t know the meaning of the words. Show me a constitutionalist Democrat who’s willing to stand up for what is right for America, and I’ll show you an eel riding a bicycle. When AnninCA is willing to stand up for freedom, I’ll welcome her with open arms to the rest of us freedom-loving, liberty-lovin’ Americans.

FYI: standing up for freedom means voting for those who respect the Constitution and actively pursue a freedom agenda. That’s not Obama or any Democrat.

Funniest thing I’ve ever read.

Just another day at Hot Air. All Palin, all the time. The usual cast of Palin nuts gushing how wonderful she is, delusionally predicting she’s going to be the next POTUS, apologizing for everything she and her embarrassment of a family does.

The more the Palin worshippers bulldoze over the thinking types here the more I realize what a sad group of fringe players they are. Another reason why Mitt’s people adopted this tactic against Palin.

Via Gallup Palin’s current favorables/unfavorables (F/UF):

Overall (all Americans): 44/47
Independents 44/44
GOP members 76/20

Any Republican would give their left arm to have these numbers if they were thinking about running for POTUS in 2012.

technopeasant on July 16, 2010 at 5:25 PM

10 reasons why Sarah Palin is NOT unelectable:

1)Her strength is in the Bush 2004 states (the South, Midwest, the Rust Belt) and Rocky Moutain West). It takes 270 electoral votes to be elected POTUS. Sarah could secure the necessary votes to win the presidency from Obama, and that is why Team Obama is scared of Palin and has tried to destroy her over the last 18 months.

2)Obama’s falling poll numbers give her a shot at toppling Obama.

3)The PPP poll that now shows her in a tie with Obama in a head to head matchup.

4)Gallup has her F/UF at 44/47, with independents 44/44 and with the GOP 76/20.

5)The continuing recession which is expected to linger until at least 2012.

6)Obama now being approved by WHITE voters to the tune of around 37%-38% allowing Sarah to get 60% of the WHITE vote in the 2012 election and according to Jay Cost at RCP horseblog allow her to win the election.

7)Sarah is willing to fight Obama in the middle of the ring and never back down giving blow for blow.

8)Sarah would be able to prevent a viable third party of the right from forming by uniting libertarians, Tea Party members, traditional base conservatives and evangelicals.

9)Palin would be able to match Obama in fundraising.

10) Unlike 2008 millions of conservatives who didn’t show up at the polls or voted third party would vote for Sarah.

We’ve had the word “Palinista” or “Palinbot” thrown around a lot to describe fanatical Palin supporters. I’ve long noticed that there seems to a lot more obsession and fanaticism among Palin attackers/detractors. Palinoia is a perfect word to describe that anti-Palin obsession. I suppose “Palinoiacs” would describe those suffering from “Palinoia?”

That article, if true, would explain why McCain staffers started sniping at their own VP candidate. At the time, I thought they were just trying to shift the blame. But if they were former Romney staffers, and they expected McCain to lose, then I could completely see why they might suddenly attack someone they were supposed to show some loyalty to.

Which still makes them pathetic, miserable human beings, if not serious human beings.
