Sheila Jackson Lee: “Today we have two Vietnams, side by side”

posted at 7:53 pm on July 15, 2010 by Allahpundit

Another modern history lesson from a woman who once wondered why the Pathfinder didn’t take a photo of the American flag that Neil Armstrong planted on Mars in 1969. The clip comes via Moe Lane, who notes that she does correctly identify the number of American troops killed in action — which, er, cuts against the possibility that she’s simply confusing ‘Nam with Korea in her two-state model.

If you think this clip’s depressing, brace yourself: It’s not even the dumbest thing she said today.

Update: Moe e-mails to point out that Lee did know the score on Vietnam as recently as 10 years ago. To borrow a favorite White House phrase, perhaps she simply spoke, er, “inartfully” here?

Sheila Jackson’s Prepared Remarks

Re: Those numbers adding up

Today, at this crossroads between the minus and the plus, the integer and the anti-integer, we pause to pay our respects. Who knows but for how long it was said, “2 plus 2 = 4?!” But that time is past now, and gone. Today we sit astride two Viet-Naams, East and West, together in heart, unalike numerically. As Lincoln once said, “The Dred Scott decision must not stand.” And to that, I say, amen.

We just need to make sure the colored students are actually learning. Heck, this moron somehow got into and graduated from Yale.

Fun trick- look at entry requirements (GPAs and SATs) and graduation rates at HBC&Us. Now look at the same for a popular non-HBCU state school within 100 miles.

Another fun trick- Try to find the actual average grades of each class, freshman to senior, before the curves they grade on distort them into passing grades. Students averaging in the 20s and 30s (as in 20+ points below an “F”) are graduating and truly believing they have an education. You REALLY have to flunk to fail out of a historically black college.

We encourage them to go to schools where they won’t be challenged to learn. OR these schools are a challenge to the colored students, and it’s much, much worse than we think. Take your pick.

But woohoo, the colored students got a degree. Unfortunately, diplomas don’t mean jack if you don’t have knowledge to compete with the kid graduating with a true “C” from ____ State. It’s feel good doting over learning/education/accomplishments. That’s what desperately needs to be addressed.

Some of us ’round these parts call her Sheila “Lookat Me” because of her affinity for the TV camera. I’ve been to several events in Houston where she was on the agenda. I learned that all I had to do was look for the television cameras. If they were there then she would show up, if they weren’t there then the speaker would state that “Ms. Lee regrets that she will not be in attendance this evening”. It’s a simple formula.

Know what’s even worse? Some of these people can’t even pass at HBCUs with no standards and have to pay off the registrar to fake their grades and/or entire degrees.

There was a major scandal about this at Southern University in Baton Rouge made worse by the fact that some people who never attended grad school used degrees “earned” there to be high-paying administrators in the public school system.

There was a separate scandal in that same time frame in which about 80+ “F” grades were changed to “A”s by a bribed temp worker in the registrar’s office there.

Maybe Jackson Lee just never mentally accepted the fait accompli of 1975. Even when they renamed Saigon Ho Chi Minh City, after that rather distressing thing with the helicopter lift from our embassy rooftop, and then all those boat people…

But then I could say the same about Obama, and he got the vote of 53% of the voting public.

I wonder. When the Romans were surrounded and the Visigoths laid siege to the most advanced civilization that Europe and the mediteranian countries ever had… What went through their minds?

Were they torn between telling their leaders “I told you so” and fleeing for their own lives?

This is the first time in my life that I am worried about MY OWN GOVERNMENT destroying the country.

How the hell did that happen?

If her district still has the same boundaries that it did when I moved out of it about 8 years ago, then no, he has absolutely no chance. No matter how bad the Donks take it in the rear this November (knock on wood, keep fingers crossed, etc…), you’ll still have Sheila and all the comedy gold she can bring with her to D.C. for at least another two years.

She could probably pull a dozen “Cold Cash” Jeffersons and it still wouldn’t matter. Barring a redistricting miracle, she’ll have that seat unitl she dies or she gets tired of it, whichever comes first…….

Oh, there are. Unfortunately they just don’t have the right letter after their name. In that district, it’s all about skin color and having a (D) after your name. As long as Sheila keeps the skids greased and the bacon flowing, she’ll be there as long as she wants. If by some miracle someone does manage to knock her off, they’ll be just as bad as she is.

It might be hard to believe, but the guy she replaced was probably worse than she is….

Think, my friend, think. Sheila Jackson is in her 60′s. Saigon fell to the communists in 1975. It’s not a matter of education at all. She didn’t need to learn about the Vietnam war in history class. She lived through that period!

And let me also assure the Congresswoman that the state of Arizona does, in fact, share a border with the country of Mexico.

John the Libertarian on July 16, 2010 at 5:09 AM

Hate to say this but she has a point on at least ONE Vietnam.

From another source

Four years into the war, senators were at loggerheads with Lyndon B. Johnson. At the time Foreign Relations Committee meetings were held behind closed doors.

It would take over thirty years for the truth to emerge that the Aug. 4, 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident, where US warships were apparently attacked by North Vietnamese PT Boats – an incident that kicked off US involvement in the Vietnam war – was a staged event that never actually took place.

However, the records now show that at the time senators knew this was the case.

In a March 1968 closed session of the Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Albert Gore Sr. of Tennessee, the father of former vice president Al Gore, noted:

“If this country has been misled, if this committee, this Congress, has been misled by pretext into a war in which thousands of young men have died, and many more thousands have been crippled for life, and out of which their country has lost prestige, moral position in the world, the consequences are very great,”

Senator Frank Church, Democrat of Idaho, said in an executive session in February 1968:

“In a democracy you cannot expect the people, whose sons are being killed and who will be killed, to exercise their judgment if the truth is concealed from them,”

Other senators were keen to withhold the truth about Tonkin in order not to inflame public opinion on the war:

Senator Mike Mansfield, Democrat of Montana, stated, “You will give people who are not interested in facts a chance to exploit them and to magnify them out of all proportion.”

Mansfield was referring to the proposed release of a committee staff investigation that raised doubts over whether the Tonkin incident ever took place.

The committee decided in the end to effectively conceal the truth, with Senator Church noting that if the committee came up with proof that an attack never occurred, “we have a case that will discredit the military in the United States, and discredit and quite possibly destroy the president.”

He also noted that if the senators were to follow up on their skepticism over Tonkin, “The big forces in this country that have most of the influence and run most of the newspapers and are oriented toward the presidency will lose no opportunity to thoroughly discredit this committee.”

AND FURTHERMORE…

The LBJ Presidential tapes, declassified and released in 2001, prove that LBJ knew the Tonkin incident never happened. After dressing down his Defence Secretary Robert McNamara for misleading him, Johnson then discussed how to politically spin the non-event and escalate it as justification for air strikes.

“You just came in a few weeks ago and said they’re launching an attack on us – they’re firing at us,” Johnson tells McNamara in one conversation, “and we got through with the firing and concluded maybe they hadn’t fired at all.”

The NSA also deliberately faked intelligence data to make it appear as if two US ships had been lost in the “attack”.

Johnson used the 1964 false flag event to expand dramatically the scale of the Vietnam War by ushering in the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, as well as to rope in much needed domestic support with the Congress and public.

Perhaps if the Foreign Relations Committee hadn’t been so afraid of “the big forces” controlling America, a large percentage of the almost 60,000 American soldiers and 2 million Vietnamese people wouldn’t have lost their lives.

Bravo!

LBJ’s initial presidential telephone conversations with his fellow senators whose advice he sought regarding whether to pull our troops out of Vietnam were recorded. EVERY senator’s counsel was to pull out because any further engagement would recreate a new Korean War experience. Despite unanimous counsel to disengage from Vietnam, with no backing from his friends, LBJ nonetheless created the Gulf of Tonkin incident to excuse his horrible personal decision to play God nation building in SE Asia.

American irony was that Goldwater would have allowed the Air Force to immediately nuke, deforest and destroy the enemy. Whereas, America elected the peace dove LBJ who chose the bloodier route of a long and torturous experience losing tens of thousands of American men before finally deforesting Vietnam via chemical warfare, TOO LATE.

Anyway, Sheila Jackson Lee’s stupid-ignorance about Vietnam illustrates just how far today’s black American politicians have distanced themselves from MLK Jr. She takes too many cell phone calls so as to not study and learn facts. All that multi-tasking during her TX Townhall Meetings during the public protests against ObamaCare while in Congressional debate.

Dave Rywall on July 16, 2010 at 9:25 AM

Somehow, I doubt that this will be your attitude the next time a Republican says something 0.0005% as dumb as this.

Come on, Dave. This isn’t the first time (or the second, or the third….) she’s said something at this level of stupid. Is this really the type of representative you want making laws in Washington?

Egad, the woman is an idiot. She says we have two Vietnams living side by side. I wonder if she knows that Arizona is a border state?

Face palm.

TX 18 District

36.9% White, 40.4% Black, 3.4% Asian, 35.6% Hispanic, 0.4% Native American, 0.5% other

Cook PVI rated D+24

If she leaves for any reason we are likely to see another just as bad as her from a district that loaded up

CommentGuy on July 16, 2010 at 10:27 AM

She’s the same dimwit who said it was racist that no hurricanes were given ‘black’ names.

wright on July 16, 2010 at 10:29 AM

Yeah.
“Not even wrong” sums it up pretty well.
(Physicists use that one a lot. The way I heard it, Pauli was the one that coined it.)

He’ll lose. He’s white. She’s black. No contest.
Those voters in her district would vote for Hitler if he was black.

Lothar on July 16, 2010 at 9:48 AM

Only if he were running as a Democrat.
I suspect that most of her voters don’t even read the names on the ballots, but just look for the ‘D’.

Better schools might keep stupid people from electing stupid members of congress

Although it is getting very little attention, the NAACP passed a resolution opposing the closing of failing schools. Teacher’s UNIONS win; The school children lose.

Another idiotic Democrat that failed first grade… on the same mental level as plywood.

IntheNet on July 15, 2010 at 8:09 PM

Cut them some slack. In a gerrymandered district, what choice do they have?

notropis on July 15, 2010 at 8:21 PM

Write-in? 3/4″ sounds persuasive.

UltimateBob on July 16, 2010 at 11:23 AM

You know, if this woman were white, it would be very progressive of us to observe how pathetically stupid she is.

But she isn’t, so we can’t.

DrDeano on July 16, 2010 at 11:42 AM

While Mr. Anthony’s points are well considered, they are beside the point of the post. We’re discussing flaming, abject ignorance here not the cause and effect of our involvement in Viet nam. I wass thinking about the person in the video before I read CommentGuy’s post and my suspicions are confirmed if his information is correct. What more can one expect?
