Reid: GOP rooting for failure! Update: “We are going to win Senate seats as a result of this war”
posted at 12:15 pm on July 15, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
You knew this was coming, and perhaps it’s a sign of uncommon common sense that the media didn’t give it very much play. With their economic policies collapsing, Democrats are desperate to fend off electoral catastrophe in the midterm elections. Harry Reid offered the first salvo in their strategy to blame the economy not on the havoc caused by their radical and high-spending agenda of the past two years, but on Republicans who point out that it hasn’t worked:
Republicans hope unemployment rates jump higher to give them a better shot at retaking Congress, Majority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday.
At a press conference announcing a package of proposals to help small business, the Nevada Democrat said Republicans were obstructing legislation to help the economy for political reasons.
“They think the worse the economy is come November, the better they’re going to do election-wise,” Reid said.
We have heard this before, and to be fair, Republicans complained about this in reverse when John Kerry kept talking about the “jobless recovery” in 2004. There was a major difference between 2004 and now, however. In 2004, the American economy was actually adding jobs, the civilian participation percentage in the workforce never got below 62%, and the unemployment rate didn’t get over the mid-sixes. By the time of the general election, the US economy was adding hundreds of thousands of jobs per month — real, private-sector jobs, and not Census Bureau temps.
We actually had an economy to “talk down” in 2004. In 2010, it’s almost ludicrous to talk it up. Civilian participation has plummeted to generational lows. The Democrats spent over $860 billion to save jobs, and the only jobs actually saved were government jobs that will have to get rescued again with more state bailouts. Retail sales have begun falling again as the false optimism of the first quarter gives way to the clearer picture after the short-term stimuli have dissipated. Capital remains on the sidelines, not because Republicans point out the economic indicators, but because investors don’t want to sink money into excessive uncertainty about future taxes, regulations, and top-down mandates.
No one wants this to continue. Republicans are just pointing out that these are the predictable outcomes of government running amuck, just as we predicted would happen all along. If Obama suddenly became a free-market Friedman acolyte and demanded an end to Democratic Keynesianism, we’d cheer him on.
There is a difference between rooting for failure and observing that the natural consequences of class-warfare, populist, anti-capital policies have unfolded just as predicted. The fact that Reid can’t actually tell the difference is Exhibit A in the argument that he needs to be retired by his constituents.
Update: The irony of the man who announced on Capitol Hill in 2007 that “the war is lost” complaining about cheerleading for failure was lost on me this morning, but not on our commenters. Nice work!
Update II: The irony doesn’t end there, either. This is Harry Reid in April 2007:
“We’re going to pick up Senate seats as a result of this war,” Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (Nev.) told reporters yesterday. “Senator Schumer has shown me numbers that are compelling and astounding.”
Reid was referring to Charles E. Schumer of New York, the Senate Democrats’ campaign chief. “You look at the polling numbers of Republican senators, and the war in Iraq is a lead weight attached to their ankles. They know that,” Schumer said.
Senator Reid, who cheerleads failure and defeat for political gain?

These are the same people who could hardly contain their glee every time there was a setback in Iraq.
Remember how giddy they were about Abu Ghraib, or how eager they were to use the term “Civil War” in Iraq? Or how they loved it when Ted Koppel spent an entire show just reading the names of the troops killed in combat? And, remember how a prominent Senator just had to come out and declare the war lost when we still had troops fighting over there?
Oh, we haven’t forgotten Harry, so go F yourself.

Ironic, given that I remember Democrats being pretty happy the economy tanked “thanks to George Bush” right before the 2008 election, as evidenced by their linking of Bush-McCain on the economic side and how Obama would give hope and change to us all.

This is probably a reaction to Sharron Angle’s ad saying that unemployment in Nevada increased from 4.4% to 14% since Reid was Senate Majority Leader. He probably wants Nevada voters to think that Angle is rooting for high unemployment by November.

Obama sat in Jeremiah Wright’s church for 20 years, his closest adviser is a government-supported slumlord (Valerie Jarrett), and he’s married to Michelle Obama.
Fat chance that Obama is going to have some kind of economic conversion. His stupidity about daily commonsense encounters is unbelievable: auto insurers don’t pay for collision damage when you pay for only liability coverage, and internists don’t perform surgery, so they damn well don’t make treatment decisions based on whether they can earn more from performing a tonsilectomy than they can from prescribing more antibiotics.
Whoever thinks Obama is smart is full of sh*t.

They’ll need a haz-mat team to come in and fumigate once Prince Harry is out of office.

Reid was correct back then–he demonized the Iraq war effort (despite the SUCCESSFUL “surge” strategy proposed by McCain to Bush, and implemented by General Petraeus), and the Democrats won a net 8 Senate seats in 2008. He spent 2007-08 bashing the Iraq war effort when he and the Senate Democrats could have reformed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and prevented the banking crisis in 2008. But it was much easier to just blame Bush.
So what have you done about jobs lately, Mr. Majority Leader? Spend a year buying off Senators to shove ObamaCare down our throats, which poll after poll shows the American people never wanted?
The high unemployment is your baby, Dingy Harry. Own it or do something about it, or let Sharron Angle do the job.

Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi constructed an entire 3-year campaign to convince America that the war in Iraq was “lost” and that “Bush lied” to get us into that war. I lived through it in Bob Casey’s campaign against Rick Santorum in 2006. None of it was true. But they didn’t care. And it worked.
This time is IS true. Democratic policy has failed. Our economy is still in a ditch, housing has not recovered, capital has gone on strike, and the natonal debt has exploded. Those numbers don’t lie.

Yip! And just how many felons, and dead people voted for Dems, so they could win? Hmmmmmmmm.
capejasmine on July 15, 2010 at 1:27 PM
This strategy was pointed out on MSNBC. The strategy is to blame the Republicans for all our ills -too rally the Democrats. To get the Dems to the voting booths in November. They also want to raise Joe Barton and John Boehner’s profile, so Democrats know who to blame “Personally” for what’s gone wrong. Example, the BP oil spill, you know Republicans are in Bed with Big Oil -then they use Barton and Boehnor as poster boys….never mind that BP contributed $$$ to Obama’s Presidential campaign.
They want to make these two Republicans “The Face” of the enemy.
The only problem is I don’t think their Democrat constituents can learn and retain the strawman enemy in the amount of time they have left. First they need to inundate the air waves with the message, who is watching MSNBC or CNN anymore?
They are trying to reach the same people who voted for Obama in 2008. Those people didn’t know who had control of the house and senate or who Nancy Pelosi is or Joe Biden for that matter. It’s a hard slog for the Dems to get everyone whipped up over Barton and Boehnor.
They have decided to go with a FEAR campaign, and that was Paul Begala’s recommendation. Make Democrats fear a Republican resurgence. I guess the philosophy is if you can’t attract votes to yourself try and repel votes for your opponent?
Dr Evil on July 15, 2010 at 1:28 PM
Let’s see. Who created the mess and who has passed legislation that only makes it worse? Who has done nothing to stimulate actual job growth in the private sector? Who is against lowering taxes? Who wants to pass Cap and Trade? Who is about to pass a financial reform bill that will only further cripple the economy and kill jobs?
Methinks your side is hoping. Jerkwad. The evidence is overwhelming.

Harry, you’re an idiot.
“Republicans hope unemployment rates jump higher to give them a better shot at retaking Congress, Majority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday.”
Harry, if the Republicans want to show “higher unemployment rates”, they would have signed on with your extension of unemployment benefits.
As it is Harry, your allowing unemployment benefits to run out on over 3 million people will reduce the number “OFFICIALLY” unemployed by 3 million people.
3 million fewer people on unemployment would look good or bad for the Dems come Nov?
