Politico wonders: Why is our very successful president doing so badly?

posted at 4:12 pm on July 15, 2010 by Allahpundit

A fun piece thanks partly to the self-pity evinced by a “top Obama advisor,” partly to the griping about how many arrogant jerks now populate the West Wing, and partly to the hostility exhibited by Politico towards its frequent nutroots antagonists. A quote to whet your appetite: “The liberal blogosphere grew in response to Bush. But it is still a movement marked by immaturity and impetuousness — unaccustomed to its own side holding power and the responsibilities and choices that come with that.” Thank goodness none of our more mature, less impetuous big media outlets take their cues from these not-so-merry lefty pranksters.

You can argue over whether Obama’s achievements are good or bad on the merits. But especially after Thursday’s vote you can’t argue that Obama is not getting things done. To the contrary, he has, as promised, covered the uninsured, tightened regulations, started to wind down the war in Iraq and shifted focus and resources to Afghanistan, injected more competition into the education system and edged closer to a big energy bill.

The problem is that he and his West Wing turn out to be not especially good at politics, or communications — in other words, largely ineffective at the very things on which their campaign reputation was built. And the promises he made in two years of campaigning turn out to be much less appealing as actual policies.

“I tell you, it’s very frustrating that it’s not breaking through, when you look at these things and their scale,” said a top Obama adviser, who spoke on background to offer a candid take on the state of play. “Can you imagine if Bill Clinton had achieved even one of these? Part of it is because we are divided, even on the left…And part of it is the culture of immediate gratification.”

Translation: “Scoreboard.” Except … most voters don’t care about the scoreboard, do they? Here’s what happened: The One decided from the start that passing something, anything, would be his top priority on major legislation. The details were less important than the fact of passage; that’s why he let Reid and Pelosi take the lead on the stimulus and eventually O-Care. Letting them write the bills increased his chance of drawing majorities in both houses and thereby avoiding Clinton’s haunting failure with HillaryCare. The problem with that approach, though, is that it guarantees a result that’s further to the right than lefties would like and, with a Democratic president and Congress, waaaaay further to the left than righties would like — and while that might be tolerable with routine legislation, on epochal items like the stimulus and health-care, it’s a recipe for disaster. We ended up with a $787 billion pork-packed stimulus instead of the $3 trillion or whatever leviathan that Paul Krugman keeps daydreaming about. And then we ended up with (almost) universal health care that not only falls short of single-payer but lacks a public option. As Politico puts it, “Conservatives think he stands for backdoor socialism. Liberals think he is a sell-out.” Which, again, would be manageable for the White House if they were dealing with smaller ticket items — but on big, marquee legislation where passions run hot, who’s supposed to be happy with the product? If, like Clinton, his drift was towards reducing the size of government instead of expanding it, then at least he could sell himself to low-information independents as the centrist hero who’s looking out for their pocketbooks. As it is, the sticker shock from all this crap has indies freaking out too. With all that bearing down on him, it really is a testament to Obama’s personal charm that he’s managed to keep his approval rating near 50 percent. If President Hillary was in this position, she’d be lucky to see 40.

What he probably should have done is split the difference on the stimulus and ObamaCare by taking a more centrist/righty approach on the former and then going harder left on the latter by including a public plan. That would have given both sides one thing to be genuinely pleased about. But no worries: I’m sure his hugely expensive cap-and-trade bill and the DOJ’s lawsuit against Arizona’s fantastically popular immigration law will get everything straightened out. And after all, how many seats realistically could the GOP win? Ahem.

Ace makes the very good point that Politico defines “success” at passing partisan legislation– and independents don’t care about that. Besides, there are overwhelming Dem majorities and a Dem president. What’s so hot about passing legislation?

Lower unemployment? Leadership in Afghanistan? Respond to the oil spill? Any success?

Maybe it’s because people have woken up to the fact than our National leaders are Socialists and that by success, they mean shoving legislation down our throats without due regard to what the people really want.

Obama is doing his job domestically exactly as he intended. Internationally, Obama got whooped on his Afghan withdrawal plan. Given that turn of events, no one abroad (especially those who promoted his campaign abroad) expects Obama to succeed in anything. Pulling the US military home was the only reason they vaunted his image. But now that he’s actually president and CHANGED his agenda to their chagrin, no love for Obama.

To the contrary, he has, as promised, covered the uninsured, tightened regulations, started to wind down the war in Iraq and shifted focus and resources to Afghanistan, injected more competition into the education system and edged closer to a big energy bill.

A. Covered the uninsured: All it took was secret deals with big pharma, paybacks for senate votes, 22 meetings with SEIU Andy Stern, and will cost $115Billion more than promised.

B. Tightened regulations: Fannie/Freddie which are largely to blame for the housing meltdown are STILL not regulated.

C. The war in Iraq was already winding down.

D. Shifted focus to Afghansitan? As I recall, it took Obama THREE months to even meet with his commanders; and then only after it was leaked to the press.

E. Injected more competition into the education system: I see your “Race to the Top”, and raise you the highly proven “School Voucher” program killed by Obama his first month in office.

F. Edged closer to a big energy bill: I’ll say its BIG, Obama has awarded $2BILLION to two solar companies that creates 5100 jobs. Big WASTE!

Oh, and the Stimulus FAILED to keep unemployment at 8%.

TN Mom on July 15, 2010 at 4:50 PM

If “success” just means passing stuff, then W. was at least as successful as Obama:

Bipartisan AUMF for both Afghanistan and Iraq
Bipartisan NCLB
Bipartisan Medicare Prescription Drug Program
Bipartisan McCain-Feingold
Bipartisan TARP
Massive Tax Cuts/Restructuring
Creation of Office of Homeland Security/Total restructuring of our security and intelligence operations

etc.

Whether it was “good” or “bad” legislation evidently isn’t supposed to matter.

Wonder if Politico would score it that way?

Yet the mystery remains: Having moved swiftly toward achieving the very policy objectives he promised voters as a candidate, Obama is still widely perceived as flirting with a failed presidency.

…..could it be that this was achieved due to filibuster proof majorities instead of bi-partisan compromise.

…..Obama had to use hundreds of millions of our tax dollars to bribe his own party to vote on many of these bills.

….Could it be that many of these so called accomplishments were and are very un-popular with the American public.

Back in April of 09 is was shown how unpopular Obama’s agenda was:

Obama sows seeds of demise

By Dick Morris
Posted: 04/28/09 05:45 PM [ET]
http://thehill.com/dick-morris/obama-sows-seeds-of-demise-2009-04-28.html

When the Obama administration crashes and burns, with approval ratings that fall through the floor, political scientists can trace its demise to its first hundred days. While Americans are careful not to consign a presidency they desperately need to succeed to the dustbin of history, the fact is that this president has moved — on issue after issue — in precisely the opposite direction of what the people want him to do.

…..over and over and over reports hit the streets that the American public was against the White House agenda:

Voter Views on State-of-the-Union Points

Rasmussen Reports

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/january_2010/voter_views_on_state_of_the_union_points

Sixty-one percent (61%) now want Congress to drop health care and focus on jobs.

Americans strongly believe that cutting taxes is the best way to create jobs. However, few expect the nation’s elected politicians to follow that route.

Voters still say deficit reduction is the most important priority laid out by the president last February. They also believe it is the presidential priority least likely to be achieved.

…..Just more evidence of how out of touch Obama is from the American people and how he put the liberal agenda ahead of what was best for the country.

If people like this “top Obama advisor” had actually listened to the American public, they would not be having to ask such obviously ignorant questions.

Not true. Unlike beauty success can be measured, it can be qualified/quantified and beauty cannot because as you said it is in the eyes of the beholder.

The fact of the matter is Obama has been a complete failure when it comes to leadership both foreign and domestically. His policies have failed and he is proving to be what most of us knew him to be and that’s an empty suit, all flash (beauty if you will) and no substance.
