Dick Cheney recovering from surgery related to congestive heart failure

posted at 5:29 pm on July 14, 2010 by Allahpundit

He had his fifth heart attack — a “mild” one — back in February and then spent three days in the hospital last month to treat fluid build-up associated with coronary artery disease. Now this.

As many of you know, I have dealt with coronary artery disease for decades, suffering my first heart attack in 1978 at age 37. Over the years, excellent care from my doctors and advances in medicine and technology have allowed me to live a full and active life, for which I am very grateful.

A few weeks ago, it became clear that I was entering a new phase of the disease when I began to experience increasing congestive heart failure. After a series of recent tests and discussions with my doctors, I decided to take advantage of one of the new technologies available and have a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implanted. The LVAD is a small implantable pump that improves heart function and will enable me to resume an active life.

Last week I underwent surgery at Inova Fairfax Heart and Vascular Institute and had an LVAD implanted. The operation went very well and I am now recuperating.

I am grateful for the wonderful care that I have received over the years at George Washington University Hospital, and that I am currently receiving at Inova Fairfax Heart and Vascular Institute.

I also want to thank all of you who have included my family and me in your thoughts and prayers.

He’s been keeping a conspicuously lower profile lately than he did last year, when it felt like he was giving interviews every other week laying out The One for his terrorism policies. Whether that’s due purely to his health or partly to political concerns — not wanting to overshadow Liz, not wanting his poor favorable rating (which has been improving but remains negative) to hurt the GOP — only he knows, but congestive heart failure is bound to slow down even Darth Vader. Best wishes to him.

Unfortunately, this is something he will never recover from. May his life be blessed with energy and happiness to the end…

My father had this and lived many years after being diagnosed with it, but the last 5 years were pretty rough.

My prayers are with him, god help him.

Having to have a LVAD put in is serious business, his years are numbered on a single hand. Normally he would be an immediate candidate for a heart transplant. At 69, I’m sure where he would sit on that list, perhaps being a former VP would help his chances but the outcry from the liberal blogs would be ugly.

Sorry to go off topic (although it does involve heart attacks), but this is interesting:

I am no fan of George Steinbrenner and the New York Yankees. The Yankees are a team that, while having some players over the years that I admire greatly, is basically evil incarnate.

Still, I am glad George dodged this bullet. George beat them by dying early.

Cindy Munford on July 14, 2010 at 10:32 PM

Cheney’s response to the attacks on him vs. the Kos Kiddies response to his illness.

The difference could not be more clear.

I don’t know if this is really end-stage CHF, but after 5 heart attacks this could be very bad news. I’m actually recovering from viral CHF (myocarditis) but have no other heart issues or damage, so the cardiologist says full recovery is almost certain – just no idea how long. Boredom is driving me out of my mind, hopefully Mr. Cheney knows how to relax. :)

My grandmother lived with congestive heart failure for more than 20 years. And she was bad about dealing with it. She wouldn’t take her meds, waited until it got so bad she couldn’t breathe, and then call one of us grandkids and we’d have to get her to the emergency room. She was in her 90’s when she died of a stroke.

As for the comments about Steinbrenner, I read an article the other day that said there is nothing to stop Congress from passing a law that retro-actively goes after the taxes of anyone who dies in 2010.

So think about that if you’re considering suicide or, eh, assisted suicide [wink].
