Congressman: WH directive to NASA confirmed

posted at 8:48 am on July 14, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday, after a week of uproar over NASA administrator Charles Bolden’s interview on Al-Jazeera, the White House denied that Bolden had been given objectives for outreach to Muslim countries for self-esteem projects that ignored actual space objectives.  That came as news to Rep. Pete Olson, the ranking Republican on the committee that oversees NASA.  A month ago, Bolden informed Olson of his new mission, and Olson accused the Obama administration of lying about it to escape criticism:

The White House is disavowing a plan to have NASA conduct outreach to Muslim countries, but a congressman who talked to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden about that plan last month said the initiative was very real until somebody slammed the brakes on it.

Rep. Pete Olson, ranking Republican on the Space and Aeronautics House Subcommittee, told FoxNews.com that Bolden described the outreach program as part of the administration’s space plan during a conversation they had in June.

“He confirmed it to me,” Olson said. The Texas Republican said he thinks the program existed until the “uproar” compelled the administration to rethink it.

At the time, Olson wasn’t as concerned over the politics of those objectives as he was over the misdirection it represented.  It also could have created a security risk if majority-Muslim countries with animosity towards the West exploited NASA’s missile technology — but as Olson notes, there really isn’t anything all that secret any more to exploit.  Olson wants a closer focus on space exploration and rightly saw Barack Obama’s new NASA mission objectives as wasteful and distracting:

“The last thing we need to be doing now is spending precious space dollars … on outreach to any religion,” he said. “We need to spend money on human space exploration.”

We’re back to where we were before yesterday.  This administration doesn’t want to spend money in space, but they do want to spend it on efforts best left to the State Department.  Except now, of course, we can also factor into the equation a healthy dose of dishonesty.  Instead of admitting that Obama had made a mistake, they dumped the entire blame on Bolden, who wouldn’t be appearing on Al-Jazeera in the first place without getting approval up the chain of command first.   As Jules Crittenden says, Obama and his team threw Bolden under the Space Shuttle.

Rovin on July 14, 2010 at 9:36 AM

I believe Olson, but the spin here will be easy to see – if it’s not in writing, the WH’s position will still be that Bolden misunderstood Obama, and not only conveyed that misunderstanding to Al-Jazeera, but to this Republican Congressman as well, who by the way, is obviously a muslim/black-hating racist who is simply politicizing this event in the most unbecoming way, etc etc, yadda yadda…

Midas on July 14, 2010 at 9:36 AM

…Obama and his team threw Bolden under the Space Shuttle.

IntheNet on July 14, 2010 at 9:39 AM

While this ersatz President is most likely a puppet of Axelrod, Ayers, and Soros, he does have a few ‘original’ ideas, chief among which is the fervent desire to make Islam respectable, notwithstanding that it keeps a third of the world in tyranny, poverty, and backwardness.

It was often asked during the campaign, “Is Obama a Muslim?” Those who raised the question were always dismissed as ‘kooks’, but when you look at the nominally ‘Christian’ church that Obama attended, you see praise for the likes of Farrakhan, who is not a Christian.

The Great Pretender may or may not be a Muslim in his own mind, but he and his handlers are surely Anti-Americans, and where on this planet are the most fervent Anti-Americans to be found? In the mosques, schools, and streets of the Muslim world, of course—not-so-strange bedfellows.

So The Obambi wants to turn NASA into an ‘outreach’ program for Muslims. This is contrary to will of Congress, which established NASA. Even the Democrats must blanche at the prospect of a President so intent upon making sure the 21st century is not another ‘American century’, as the 20th was.

Do we have grounds for impeachment yet?

…a congressman who talked to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden about that plan last month said the initiative was very real until somebody slammed the brakes on it.

This made the press. OK, so now Obama tells the Department of Agriculture to do it, with tighter security this time.

And if that story gets out, it goes to the Center for Disease Control, or the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, etc….

If Obama would order NASA to do this, then he will tell ANY agency to do ANYTHING. And there are hundreds of them.

The story here is not that Barack Hussein Obama is a Muslim – he put that is his goddamned autobiography for crying out loud.

The real story here is that the very last vestige of government accountability has just been removed. We no longer have federal agencies with publically recognizable roles; we have a vassalage system, and their viziers have no mission statement beyond “obey the king.”

ontherocks on July 14, 2010 at 12:18 PM

This administration doesn’t want to spend money in space

Well, strictly speaking, no money has ever been spent in space. Every penny of the space program is spent here on Earth, paying high-skills people to build and develop rockets, spacecraft, avionics, to do research, etc.

In other words, it’s a high-tech jobs program, which can return real, tangible results if NASA is given a clear goal. Unfortunately it doesn’t fit with the “shovel-ready” low-skill, low-tech mindset of the current ruling regime.
