Bill Press: Americans are spoiled

posted at 10:12 am on July 14, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

We’re spoiled? If Bill Press’ argument holds water, then who spoiled us? If the answer is George W. Bush, then perhaps that means that liberals will shortly revise their estimations of his presidency as the last Golden Age … right? Brian Maloney catches Press reacting to the news that six in ten Americans somehow have lost confidence in a man who spent a trillion dollars only to see jobs bleed out of the American economy as an indictment of our ability to self-govern:

It comes as no shock to hear a liberal talk about the American public as “children” who need scolding. (It also doesn’t come as a shock to see that Bill Press doesn’t check the data on jobs before declaring that Obama has rescued them.) That’s the entire mindset of liberalism — that the masses can’t make their own decisions and need a cadre of elites to do it for them. That explains ObamaCare and every other social engineering project that we’ve seen since FDR, one of the people that Press claims couldn’t possibly govern the nation today if given the chance.

Expect to see more of the “ungovernable” argument as Obama continues to flop. We’ll hear it as an excuse for ever-increasing executive authority; we’ve already seen public paeans to authoritarian regimes by liberals like Thomas Friedman and Woody Allen, and we’ll likely see a lot more if the Republicans take control of the House in the fall.

Well, we are spoiled.

At least in this sense: there are too many people in this country – far, FAR too many – who willingly buy into the lies of people like Obama, who promise them that their every need and want will be taken care of…..so long as one just gives up to the government the tedious burden of free choice in, oh, a myriad of things.

So yes, most Americans are spoiled, because they want an easy ride, and will choose a slick con artist like Barry, who promises them things, even though there were folks out there who warned that those “promises” were not only unsustainable, but would ultimately cause more harm than good.

So Press is right, just not about why Americans are spoiled. Americans are spoiled because they’re too willing to ignore all sense of realism and pragmatism and support progressives and progressive policies.

We’ll hear it as an excuse for ever-increasing executive authority; we’ve already seen public paeans to authoritarian regimes by liberals like Thomas Friedman and Woody Allen,

Only when one of theirs is in the Whitehouse.

Seen on Twitter–In 1776 they fired bullets. The teaparty doesn’t plan on firing bullets, just politicians!

Air conditioning, which was mentioned yesterday as a culprit, really is a huge “spoiled” aspect.

It eats up huge energy.

Frankly, I can’t imagine going back to fanning ourselves on front porches.

AnninCA on July 14, 2010 at 10:31 AM

I’d say that the increase in productivity from being able to work in a cool environment more than makes up for the energy spent on air conditioning.

Besides which, how long do you think the internet would function if the servers weren’t in heavily climate-controlled rooms?

Yes, Americans spend more. We also produce more.

Now, if we lived in England, where 80 degrees is a heat wave, we might not need AC. But in the South, it’s a necessity.

If Bill Press’ argument holds water

The only water Bill holds is the water he retains each month.

This is the same Leftist mental giant who fell hook, line and sinker for the “Lovenstein Institute” hoax a few years back, in which a nonexistent group “published” a nonexistent “study” that proved that Dubyah was the stupidest of all American Presidents.

When it was pointed out to Bill that he’d been had, he blamed his own stupidity on…Bush.

You can’t make this stuff up, kids.

Poor, poor elites.

I find myself reading more de Tocgueville lately, and it’s scary how his observations from 150+ years ago are relevant today.

The surface of American society is covered with a layer of democratic paint, but from time to time one can see the old aristocratic colours breaking through.

They just don’t understand the whole concept of liberty, or they do and despise it. Too many of the left want desperately to be the new aristocrats.

I also found this quote especially relevant today, especially when you look at how much of a failure nearly every Dem “leader” at every level of government is,

Those that despise people will never get the best out of others and themselves.

So true.

reaganaut on July 14, 2010 at 12:27 PM

Tocgueville

Jeez, twist the tail on that “g” the other way…

reaganaut on July 14, 2010 at 12:28 PM

All Press did was say how much money Obama has spent and how many freedoms should be limited.

scotash on July 14, 2010 at 12:42 PM

They said America was ungovernable before Reagan was elected. They said New York City was ungovernable before Giuliani was elected.

Anyome else see a pattern here????

rockmom on July 14, 2010 at 12:43 PM

What can I say, except….

Hey Bill Press! How about a nice piping hot cup of SHUT THE HELL UP!!!!?

You don’t like America, you assclown? Then go give my regards to Fidel!

pilamaye on July 14, 2010 at 12:46 PM

Press is delusional. He thinks his freedom to speak like an idiot will survive Obama’s national-socialism.

Both have a lot of vowels in their name?
They both started out as democrats?
They both graduated from ordinary colleges (not ivy league)?

Bill Press is a far lefty fool and I will not grace his idiocies with a further response.

And when the Democrats lose, they claim voters had a “temper tantrum.”

It’s kind of difficult to imagine a less gracious group of people than the leftists/MFM.

If they lose, they scream insults at you, if they win, they try to take all your money and make you do things you don’t want to do.

Merovign on July 14, 2010 at 1:23 PM

Oh, and also, what is with the sudden crap about A/C? Do leftists WANT tens of thousands of death from heatstroke? Not to mention collateral deaths – stress is a major component in age- and disease-related death. What’s more stressful, trying to accomplish something at 75 degrees or 105 degrees?

It’s like they actually *want* the worse outcome, not just that they don’t understand how things work.

Merovign on July 14, 2010 at 1:25 PM

Do leftists WANT tens of thousands of death from heatstroke?

Indeed. Was Obowma living in Chicago in 1995, btw? You can bet the community organizers all had ACs pumping.

reaganaut on July 14, 2010 at 1:34 PM

It is difficult to argue that there are not a lot of spoiled people in the country that God and nature have blessed more than any other in history with material wealth and success. After that routine concession Press is still left with the impossible task of proving that much or any of what Obama believes and proposes is of any positive value.

snaggletoothie on July 14, 2010 at 1:37 PM

A shill like Bill Press probably would have everyone marching towards the gulags if he couldn’t abort them first. One day he pimps entitled classes; another day he pimps against those spoiled by the entitlements he pimped yesterday.

Fortunately, Bill Press is little more than a hack journalist to be remembered for helping finally drive the stake into the joke CNN’s Crossfire had become when not abusing his typewriter to peddle destructive socialist causes contemplating why Zero’s electorate are spoiled by the handouts used to buy their votes.

they did the same thing back in the late 70′s with the Carter administration.

Talking heads will be flapping their gums with the “tantrum” meme again when the election bloodbath occurs on November 2. All that edjimication and they can’t find new ways to express their displeasure over having to live in a country where they’re outnumbered by hoi polloi.

ya2daup on July 14, 2010 at 4:26 PM

Love hearing Press’s tap dance of Barry’s “accomplishments.”
Too spoiled? The cure is more welfare. That will make us less spoiled.

Ya gotta love it when a limousine liberal whines of the masses being spoiled

Bevan on July 14, 2010 at 6:15 PM

Yeah – all that freedom we used to have has spoiled us rotten. We don’t even have the decency to bow to our liberal overlords (who know so much better than we do).

RobCon on July 14, 2010 at 6:06 PM

It so pisses me off that liberals view everything through the prism of money and material goods. Aside from the notion of giving fish vs. promoting fishing on the part of the receiver of the gift fish, Obama’s poised to put millions of people out of work and give them money in place of jobs. Ask any poor person how good it feels to be on welfare.

This is what Democrats do – promote some sort of welfare slavery. They can’t create anything good.

A moron like Press gets more attention on Fox and Hot Air than he does on the outlets that pay him. His opinions are worthless and his rantings are senseless. It’s a waste of time to listen to anything coming out of his mouth.
Which, of course, pretty much sums up liberal commentators in general….

tom on July 14, 2010 at 12:18 PM

In 1995 during a heatwave, almost 1000 elderly people died in Chicago. That is when a young Barrack Obama got the idea that socialized medicine could work in this country. First you kill off all the old people….
