WaPo poll a vote of no confidence in Captain Kickass leadership
posted at 9:30 am on July 13, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Confidence in Barack Obama as a leader continues to sink, as do the President’s approval ratings on the issues, according to the latest Washington Post/ABC poll. Despite getting a skewed sample once again, Obama drops to a -14 on confidence and hits a seven-month low on job approval rating:
Public confidence in President Obama has hit a new low, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll. Four months before midterm elections that will define the second half of his term, nearly six in 10 voters say they lack faith in the president to make the right decisions for the country, and a clear majority once again disapproves of how he is dealing with the economy.
Regard for Obama is still higher than it is for members of Congress, but the gap has narrowed. About seven in 10 registered voters say they lack confidence in Democratic lawmakers and a similar proportion say so of Republican lawmakers.
Overall, more than a third of voters polled — 36 percent — say they have no confidence or only some confidence in the president, congressional Democrats and congressional Republicans. Among independents, this disillusionment is higher still. About two-thirds of all voters say they are dissatisfied with or angry about the way the federal government is working.
Such broad negative sentiments have spurred a potent anti-incumbent mood. Just 26 percent of registered voters say they are inclined to support their representative in the House this fall; 62 percent are inclined to look for someone new.
Before we get started on the results, let’s take a look at yet another skewed sample from the WaPo/ABC pollster. Democrats have a seven-point advantage in this poll in its general population (31/24) and registered voter subgroup (33/26). Barack Obama won the popular vote by seven points in November 2008. Does the WaPo/ABC pollster really believe that today’s electorate is exactly the same as then? On the other hand, it’s an improvement over the last survey in June (+9 RV) and April (+9 RV, +11 GP). Maybe by the time we get to the midterms, the WaPo/ABC sample may actually begin to look like the electorate.
Even with the boost from sampling, Obama’s moving in the wrong direction on the issues. He took the biggest hit on the economy, losing 12 points in the gap in just a month:
- Economy – 43/54, down from 50/49 in June
- Health care – 45/50, down from 49/49 in April
- Budget deficit – 40/56, basically unchanged since April
- Regulation of financial industry – 44/50, down from 48/48 in April
The confidence numbers, though, should be more worrisome than any others except perhaps the economy. Obama has been underwater in the WaPo/ABC poll since August of last year, when he dropped to 49/50 in the middle of the ObamaCare summer. In January, with ObamaCare stalled, it took a sudden dip to 47/53, and has dropped again in this poll. Presidents can back unpopular legislation and still be seen as a leader; Reagan did it in both terms. Obama has been exposed as an empty suit in a crisis, and that may not be a conclusion that Obama can reverse.
The GOP takes the first lead for the generic Congressional ballot in this poll since February, edging Democrats 47/46 in the survey. Prior to February, the last lead shown for Republicans in this poll came in October 2002, helped in no small part by the pattern of oversampling Democrats in their polls. The Post reports more on the strong anti-incumbent fervor, with 60% planning to replace their Representative and only 25% planning to vote for the incumbent, but it’s more than just anti-incumbency. Support for the GOP has grown eight points since last October and ten points in a year. Support for Democrats has dropped six points in the same time.

What is amazing is that Democrats and their media allies can’t understand that after legislative “victories” for Obama his polls go down. Watch the hoopla this week over the FINREG and the collective swoon to follow. It will only strengthen the GOP going into the midterms as people realize its just another power grab from the left.

Do you think the GOP knows this will be their last chance to govern? If they screw it up, if they give us more of the same, they are done for generations. I’m starting to get really nervous that the GOP will jump on the big spending corruption train and hand 2012 to Obama. Then he gets to replace Kennedy on the high court, and this ball game is all over.

I don’t think so. The Tea Party has shown it has the power to get rid of entrenched incumbents and block these company men types the GOP nominated(Trey Grayson, Andre Bauer). The Republican leaders are starting to get the message that the jig is up. I’m all for a big tent, but there are certain conservative core principles that every elected Republican better adhere to or else they’re gonna get run.

And as stated by Rational Thought, think of how much worse if the MSM were actually covering some of the most obvious abuse of power…ACORN and campaign laws, ACORN and abuse of gov. funds, Planned Parenthood and abortion to raped kids, Black Panthers, DOJ whistleblowers, BP oil and lack of response, voter intimidation, the list is almost endless…and non existent in the MSM.
With the most partisan reporting ever for a president, the most support from news organizations, and he is still can’t even maintain his numbers…wait until he has to debate, and answer these problems personally, he is going to be destroyed by his own arrogance and disregard for American’s.

I’m sure they got White House confirmation.
Meanwhile the republicans in the house and senate have virtually nothing to say about the strangle hold Obama is putting on our economy. Why hasn’t anyone brought forth a suit challenging the constitutionality of Obamacare? Why aren’t they putting their faces in front of the camera 24/7, attacking Barney and Dodd’s insane financial reform bill?
Wimps.

This could be very telling about the direction of the country. Except for the Gulf, President Obama gets little or no bad press. If his poll numbers are so low and continuing to drop, it tells me that your average American really does not like the direction the country is going. That in itself is reassuring. (If it’s not already too late.)
Call me Captain Obvious, but up until recently this was not very apparent to me. It also lends credence to what Limbaugh was discussing yesterday. He said that elements of the media are actually trying to start the meme that administration policies and legislation failed or didn’t produce the desired results because the Republicans stalled it all for so long.
I suppose that might salvage a bit of his base, but for the diehard Conservatives, I think it just reinforces suspicions about the media itself.

When you consider that about 43% of Americans are now on the federal dole, a 43% approval rating is reasonable. Until you factor in the usual WashPost polling bias, then not so good.

Does anybody feel like that 45% is too high? Even given the sway toward Dems.
I’d be hard-pressed to find 45% who approve this clown. I credit voter remorse for these polls…when the pollster calls, the voter teeters on whether they’ll tell the pollster, “Yes, the Hope and Change I voted for it a bust,” or giving Obummer the benefit of the doubt. I think many of them know Obummer is a total failure, but hesitate to admit their crummy vote.
This is eroding fast, though, as more Obama voters recover. His true approval is probably in the 30s. I think that will start to reflect soon in polls.
Grace_is_sufficient on July 13, 2010 at 9:58 AM
Funny how the environment is so important to the MSM, except when as an issue it will reflect badly on their pet politicians. Not one question in that poll about how people think obama is dealing with the Gulf spill. That one question would have taken another ten points off his overall approval score – and they knew it.
paul1149 on July 13, 2010 at 9:59 AM
This dangerous menace is probably now at 35% approval, adjusting for media bias and people who are afraid of being labeled a racist.
He would have to eat kittens on national tv to fall below 30%, because the criminals in Oakland, the professors feeding at the government trough, and the bed wetters living with mommmy are all counting on him confiscating whatever wealth is left in the country.

The really frightening thing is that Hillary is being put out there as a possible substitute for the Putz-in-Chief in 2 years. We just keep putting in more corrupt and/or incompetent democrats – repeating the same thing over and over again. I hope the republicans get control in November, but not a repeat of the ’90s where their majority was razor thin and democrats can still sabotage them. And that when the 2012 presidential election rolls around we don’t get stuck with 4 more years of this or even worse, Hillary Clinton. God help us!

Imagine if the MSM was reporting what is really happening, then Obama would be down to the black vote. Racism is all they have and expect the hate in the months to to come to be exploited to a more serious degree as never before. When the MSM and the Justice Department refuse to be honest, the rules of the game are stacked against the American people. The only way these cowards can succeed is to control the internet and rob the people of honest journalism. Without the internet, we would be enslaved by the powers that be. It has come to this.

Palin cut Biden to ribbons…a moderator can only do so much, the debaters can still raise issues and challenges.
And I think with the strong Republican showing, the moderators will be easier to choose. Because the liberals will need the debates more then the conservatives, the conservatives can be (this time) a little more discerning in the moderators.

Pollsters keep trying to draw this narrative about an “anti-incumbent” mood. It’s not an “anti-incumbent” mood, it’s a “cut Big Government” mood.
People are tired of seeing every other day how the government is sticking it’s fingers into one more aspect of their lives that should be left alone.
ButterflyDragon on July 13, 2010 at 10:20 AM
I have always stated, about 14% will vote no matter what, that is his base of all bases. Then you add that 10% of the voters/people are nuts (on both sides) that brings it up to 24%, then you throw in the 4-6% of white guilt or “liberal” thought, academia or whatever, and you come up with the lowest of the low of 28-30%.
To get into the 30′s is remarkable…now many won’t say that publicly because of the inherent racist stigma that the left attaches, so 30′s become even more dramatic.

Because it won’t be reported as an attack on a bad bill – it will be reported by the MSM as evil greedy Republicans hate poor people and love greedy banks that made you lose your job, that’s why. Personally, I think they need to stop talking to the press all together, and just run their own ads. If you follow the GOP leaders on twitter and fb they are talking about it plenty. Now, as for the law suit – they don’t have standing, and there have been multiple law suits already filed by multiple states. VA’s will be the first out of the gate as it has already been heard by the district court in Richmond, known as the “rocket docket.” My friends in the AG’s office expect that there will be a decision by the district court by the end of the summer.

fogw on July 13, 2010 at 11:33 AM
Rasmussen has been polling party identification with much larger samples, and it’s running about 35 D/33 R this year. Put a net 5% more Republicans into the WaPo sample, and the Generic Congressional Vote would be about a 6% advantage for Republicans, which is what Rasmussen is showing now (44R/38D).
What is truly significant about this WaPo poll (despite the skewed sampling) is that Obama has MAJORITIES (50%+) against him on four major issues: Economy, Health Care, Budget Deficit, and Financial Regulation. Obama is not on the ballot this year, but MAJORITIES now oppose what he is doing, and the only way to stop him is to elect a Republican majority to Congress. Some voters might have bad memories of what Republicans did in Congress in 2005-06, but they need to know the urgency of giving Obama a BRAKE, and give Republicans a BREAK.

Bush and Obama have made the case for divided government. It’s clear that our Constitutional system of checks and balances isn’t enough when one party controls the Executive and Legislative branches.
