Reid: No illegals in the workforce in Nevada?

posted at 1:36 pm on July 13, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

How many different ways can the immigration debate backfire on Democrats? Harry Reid may have invented a new way to shoot himself in the foot. When confronted by the CBS affiliate in Las Vegas over Reid’s block of a vote to require e-Verify for construction workers, Reid offered the standard platitude that immigration enforcement can’t be done “piecemeal” but has to wait for an overhaul of laws to replace the laws that the federal government doesn’t feel like enforcing. When pressed on the topic by the reporter, Reid insists that there are no illegal workers in Nevada (via the Boss Emeritus):

The report doesn’t offer the big quote from the interview, however (emphasis mine):

REPORTER: Why didn’t you allow for a vote?

REID: That’s the reason we need to do comprehensive immigration reform. We cannot do it piecemeal.

REPORTER: You go to the unemployment office, though, and there’s many US citizens who are unemployed construction workers and they don’t have specific jobs because, right now, some of those construction companies find it easier to hire undocumented workers.

REID: I think that any information you have in that regard is absolutely without foundation

VOICEOVER: We told Senator Reid of a Pew Hispanic Center study showing 17% of all construction workers are here illegally.

REID: That may be someplace, but it’s not here in Nevada.

VOICEOVER: But their latest 2009 numbers show that Nevada is the state with the highest percentage of unauthorized immigrants in the labor force.

When Barack Obama made immigration a debating priority by targeting the law passed in Arizona, he hoped to split the GOP and pander to Hispanic voters. Instead, he started a national debate on the dereliction of duty by the federal government in enforcing the laws already on the books, and the obstinacy of Democrats to provide more tools to cull illegal immigrants from the workforce. In a year where the civilian participation in the workforce has dropped to a generational low, voters want to know why they should bother backing a reform when the Obama administration and the Democrats in Congress won’t support enforcing what we already have.

Having Harry Reid insist that Nevada doesn’t have illegal immigrants in its workforce is just icing on the cake of cluelessness that Obama baked and delivered. If Reid is this out of touch with the facts on the ground in Nevada, he’s been in Washington far too long — and he can expect that Sharron Angle is already producing a new TV ad to make that same point.

1099 abuse is rampant in the construction industry so it really doesn’t matter about e-Verify. It would have been skirted anyway.

But to slap Americans in the face and tell them they’re on the sidelines because they refuse to protect our borders is not a good stance to take.

ButterflyDragon on July 13, 2010 at 1:41 PM

Woah doubling down on the inaccurate headline. He responded to the 17% statistic by saying that is not accurate for Nevada.
Reid is probably only thinking about gambling industry construction. He only cares about the casinos.

Having Harry Reid insist that Nevada doesn’t have illegal immigrants in its workforce is just icing on the cake of cluelessness that Obama baked and delivered.

The Left ironically put the lie to the statement “you can’t make this stuff up”, because it’s what they do.

A little help in debunking virtually everything that they put out there from the MFM would be helpful, but The People of the Lie are outing themselves any way. Pathological liars can’t help themselves.

Until recently they’ve been able to cobble together coalitions that need to believe their lies to avoid blaming themselves for their collective plight.
Now in power their strategy to push their marxist agenda through so quickly without the support of the public, the transparency that they promised has come home to roost.

It’s a cynical and criminal transparency devoid of the clarity that resides with honesty.

peter_griffin on July 13, 2010 at 2:18 PM

DFCtomm on July 13, 2010 at 1:59 PM

The attempt to point to a show (!) is cute – but that’s all that is – it’s reality TV. If people are willing to do dirty agricultural jobs, then how come a site like takeourjobs gets thousands of emails, but only a dozen follow up when the job description is described to them?

I think we need to stop blaming politicians *only* for this mess. For sure, they have been willing participants in creating the current state of affairs, but the creation of an immigrant underclass happens in *every* developed society as the supply struggles to catch up with the demand for commodities (service / food / etc).

Just as an example: ask *any* vineyard owner in California how long the industry will last if all illegal immigrants leave (I have talked to quite a few, mostly conservatives, and they all agree it will be an unmitigated disaster).

peter_griffin on July 13, 2010 at 2:24 PM

uknowmorethanme on July 13, 2010 at 1:04 PM

You forget that we also produce certain goods internally, for either domestic or international consumption. Some are consumables (like food / wine / etc) while some are services (like maintaining roads). Most of these services cannot be outsourced for a variety of reasons, yet the average US consumer is hooked to cheap prices (the median income has stayed static forever, maybe that has something to do with it?) ==> illegal immigration comes to the rescue.

Studies have shown that the cost of produce is actually more expensive because of illegals. Yes you read that right.

Here’s why…

Right now farmers have 2 options. Hire illegals or buy machinery. Machinery costs a lot now but saves a lot in the future. However for most farmers, they’d rather not make the investment in machinery and keep with the illegals.

And that aside, it’s not double. The cost of lettuce would go up about 10 cents per head. I think most people would be fine with that if in exchange they didn’t have to wait 6 hours in an ER while 30 illegals were treated before their turn came up.

I believe this to be true. I was in Vegas a few weeks ago and I’m positive the illegal Hispanic workers are all on the strip, handing out free passes to the gentlemen’s clubs.

“…immigration enforcement can’t be done “piecemeal” but has to wait for an overhaul of laws to replace the laws that the federal government doesn’t feel like enforcing.”

Isn’t this the same dumb bass that said paying income tax was optional?

With Republicans, open/porous borders satisfy their traditional donors, the 3 million members of the US Chamber.
With democrats, however, wide open/porous borders are a way of re-distribution of US wealth.

Either way the US worker is getting screwed by loss of jobs and lower wages. Plus we also have to pay for the social services of the illegals!! Talking about adding insult to injury. DD
